Quote:Not if people know that the most common names most likely would be taken. Most intelligent people who play MMO's will probably assume that the spelling of Fhenix is a take on Phoenix. Of course I would have used Phoenix if it was available. I think you missed my point on what I was trying to say in my post. I would go back and re-read again what I said and soak it in better.Using your own example, Fhenix, to you, could be imaginative. To others, it could just as easily be seen as poor spelling.

Quote:I'm going to start this off with a piece I wrote awhile back in City Life - CoH & CoV Discussions Titled "Good Character Names Are Running Out Huh?" by Samuel_TowA little while back, at HeroCon IIRC, the devs asked the people assembled if they would like a change to the naming system that would free up all names.
That crowd, for the most part, said "no".
This surprised me. I see a lot of complaints about name availability, especially on the larger servers. I don't think anyone likes using periods and increasingly odd punctuation to have a name, and I doubt people like seeing it.
I personally would love such a change. So, I was wondering why exactly people would object to it.
Is it because they don't want someone having the same name as one of their characters? That seems a little shallow to me. If that bothers them, is seeing someone with the same name but with a period at the end OK then? That seems even more shallow.
Being realistic, I don't see how someone who played a character to 37 and then stopped playing three years ago has any more or any less exclusive right to a name as someone who's actively playing and paying and thinks it would be great for their new character.
Ok, yes I understand some people like that they scored a choice name. But for everyone of those, I bet they've been grok-blocked on many more, maybe by someone who's never even going to play the game again.
The grown up thing is to understand that we'd be losing exclusivity on some names, but we would also be opening up a whole new universe of possibilities of names for us to use ourselves.
If that's not the issue people had with the dev's proposal, what is? What could the devs do then to open up names for everyone and still please the doubters.
I think one of the funnest parts of the game is in naming your Toons. As you can see, based on my signature below, I have a few toons with very different names. For example, my level 50 Controller Dark Braven, I originally wanted to call her Dark Raven,..and we all know that name is pretty much taken. So, I had to pull up Dictionary.com, spell certain words by removing the "R" in Raven and see what I could come up with. After further thought, I then said to myself, my toon will be Brave and have a Dark side to her. So, I just combined Brave with Raven and got Dark Braven. For my other toon Zambrosia, I orginally wanted to name her Ambrosia, which is greek for food of the gods. Nope, already taken. So, using my Braven technique, I just dropped the "A" and added a "Z" and got Zambrosia. Ta-Da!
I also use a lot of greek goddess names for reference in naming my toons. The easy part is all my toons are women and I always take careful consideration in wanting to give them the best name and to make it easy for anyone who has to type my name in to send me a tell. Fusion 7 was my first toon and I used a number with the name as the name Fusion was already taken. In my toons description, I said it would take all 7 nuclei to combine to form a powerful explosion for her wondrous Nova. So, I was able to tie the name to the toons personality and attributes.
For another one of my toons, I wanted a "cat" theme with her so I ended up calling her "Cattalina". Originally wanted to spell it as Catalina like the island off of California but it was taken so I just added another "t" to make it Cattalina. You know it sounds like Catalina, it has a "cat" reference to it and is still pronounced the same way. See how that works? My last toon I rolled, Fhenix, I wanted to call Phoenix, the bird that rises from the ashes,..you can see the fun in this I hope. Picking a name to fit your toons personality. Anyways, after several, and I mean about a good hours worth of time, after several attempts I finally came up with Fhenix for my Fire/Kin Controller. Easy to spell, and when you look at it, you know it will sound like "Phoenix". Problem solved. Recently when I was building a new toon for Praetoria, I built a Domintor. I wanted to call her Dominitra but that name was taken. So, I changed the i to an e and got Domentra. Still sounds the same but I just had to compromise since the original name was already taken.
I think it should be the players right to claim the name for as long as they want it since they were creative enough to come up with it. I also think you can get by without having to add periods or Xx by the name to change it up. Just follow how I did it above and you should have no problem finding good names for your toons.
Good character names are not running out, just peoples imaginations. As you can see from my post, with a little thought you too can make a name for yourself. -
Quote:"Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap". It is nice to know that someone finally noticed the hard work we Stalkers do.You got to understand, no one usually ever says anything like wow, nice stalking. Typically you hear, awesome healing dude, or great heals or nice tanking, but never once in 72 months (of course some of these do not count) has anyone ever said nice stalking or the like.
It does seem that the majority of the accolades go to the Tanker and of course, somewhat rightly so since they are the ones that draw the majority of the aggro so all the squishies can pound away with their ranged attacks. I would say out of my 13 toons I have so far, My level 50 Enrgy/SR Stalker is probably in my top three of my fav's to play.
The past week, I just ended up moving her Hero side to try her out. The biggest thing that I love with Stalkers is the advantage to almost be 100% hidden and still have the ability to attack, which is unique to Stalkers. When soloing and going for the quick kill of the boss, it is also nice to "stalk" your way through the mobs without getting killed.
I would be curious to know how much "damage" a Stalker can do while in hidden mode as they lay an Assassin's Strike versus a Tanker, Brute or a Scrappers most lethal blow? I'm not talking AoE damage but pure undaunted lay to rest one hit knock out punch damage. If someone has those numbers I would be interested in seeing those. When I normally use my AS, I also turn on my Build Up prior to using this attack. -
Since GR had gone live, I have ran into this several times while in transition in my alignment stage from going hero to villain or vice versa. I am not sure about you guys but I am so used at using my Ouroboros TP to "shortcut" from point A to B. When in the alignment stage (meaning, you are NOT fully a villain or hero yet but are rogue). If you "accidentally" use Ouroboros, it will give you your old zones. If you were using Ouroboros to shortcut your way to a Tip mission like me, you will need to go about the roundabout way to Pocket D and access the correct zone there OR you will hopefully remember NOT to use the Ouroboros while in this transition alignment stage.
The funny thing is, we are given a warning when entering through Pocket D, why not have some kind of disclaimer saying if you use Ouroboros TP that you will be given your old zones and will need to access Pocket D in order to get to the right zone for your Tip missions? My suggestions is to have the disclaimer show for those who are in the alignment state and will not pop up a disclaimer once you have completed the full alignment being that now you can access your full aligned zones via Ouroboros.
I know, I know, I should be more aware of what alignment my toon is at or I should just take the train (blue side) or ferry (red side) to get to my tip missions while in the alignment stage. The way I look at it, we do and use things in this game so many times it becomes habit forming and some habits are hard to un-break like using the Ouroboros TP to shortcut travel to missions. A simple disclaimer (dosen't have to be wordy like the current warnings), something to keep you from using the Ouroboros TP so you don't have to re-route yourself back to Pocket D in order to get to the right zones. Thanks. -
Probably when I am at the end of a story arc and going mano a mano with an AV or EB. I got all my toggles on, popped all the necessary inspirations, and just before I lay the fatal blow, he turns on his Force of Nature which normally runs for about 2 minutes. In the meantime, I already activated my Force of Nature when I started the fight...heheh. So, about that time mine runs out as it sounds like a 1972 Pontiac Bonneville trying to start-up. In the meantime, he's chasing me around the warehouse as I am trying to pop the last of my blues for a quick recharge counting down the seconds to when his Force of Nature runs out.
BAM!! He catches me and kills me. I end up going to the Hosp. and when I come back, his life bar is half full. Needless to say the *0&%$#@$#% Hospital was waaaay across town...lol! So, I said some things at my computer screen that would make you want to cover small children 's ears up. Honestly, it's like getting punched in the gut!...heh...heh. -
Quote:You know, after about 500 posts, you'd think I would have figured that out...lol! I was killing myself trying to look-up these codes when now I have a tool bar on TOP of my text box. Thanks much.Go to User CP, then look in the bar on the left for Settings & Options, then click on Edit Options.
On that page, scroll ALL the way down and look in Message Editor Interface. Click the dropdown menu and change it to "Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing." (WYSIWYG = What you see is what you get). Then click the [Save Changes] button.
Doing that will give you a whole host of text editing options right about your text area every time you post. It should cover the things you are asking about. -
Awhile ago, I was running mish'es red side with my Dem/TrckArrw MM. I ended up getting a respec drop from a mish. I told myself NOT to accidentally sell this recipe as I know how valuable they are. What did I do when I was in a hurry at the market, I accidentally SOLD it....lol.
Well, as fate would have, the next night I ended up getting another one and needless to say I immediately ran to the market and sold it!. Keep in mind this was before GR or i18 installment. Not sure if they maybe have "turned down" these drop rate on these? I did not read anywhere that they would have and something like that I would think they would have to announce it that they were changing a drop rate on something?

Thanks guys!

Question: Does anyone have a guide or list when entering or changing the color of their fonts, style of their fonts and such within these forums? I know how to do simple stuff like bold a word but would like a guide or list for changing font style, size, color etc within these posts. Maybe a list of emotes also. Thanks guys.

Call me biased but, ahem.....see my signature names below...heh..heh.
. I would say one of the funner things in this game is naming your toons. Each one of my toons has a bio, each one of my toons has a purpose and meaning behind their name. I also try and build my toons to somewhat fit their name. For example, I have a Fire/Kin Controller called Fhenix. She has wings and Egyptian Head Dress. I based her build on the Phoenix, "a unique bird that lived for five or six centuries in the Arabian desert, after this time burning itself on a funeral pyre and rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle." Now you ask, why wouldn't I have just named her Phoenix instead? Well, ahem,..that name was already taken so I had to compromise..heh..heh. You have to do that sometimes in this game.
I normally like to stick with one liner toon names as opposed to having two names to pronounce but sometimes it works. Such in my toons Chimera Mist, Zena Athena and Dark Braven which I wanted to call Dark Raven but you know "that" definitely was not available. As for Domenitra, she was my first Dominator who I built to enter Praetoria. Wanted to call her Dominitra with an "i" after the "m" but it was taken so I went with Domenitra with an "e" instead of an "i". And yes, all my toons are women.
On a side note, I can tell you I've seen some "bad" player names before. I saw one guy who's name was just numbers and letters like this: 100KLSDD321 Huh? what am I supposed to call him for short, hundy as in hundred?...lol. -

Just curious. It appears that the Reputations status have been removed from everyone. Did I fall asleep in a cave somewhere and miss something or did they just decide to remove that function/feature from these forums?

I've been thinking about this for awhile now. I've seen some screen shots in some of these forums with people having different set-ups for stuff on their main viewing screen. The way I have had mine for the past year plus is my Nav tray in the upper left corner, my life & XP tray in the upper right corner, my chat tray in the lower left corner and my power tray in the lower right corner. I was wanting to move some of these things around and try some different looks but not sure what will work best on my 24" monitor screen? I know you guys out there must have some nice set-ups you can show to give me some ideas? I think I seen one person who had "all" their stuff at the bottom of the screen. I thought that hid too much of the action below, on the bottom of the screen.
So, any screen shots you guys have that show how you have your main screen set-up would be helpful and I believe interesting because I know there has to be better ways to configure this stuff to make it more "friendly" on the user.My thinking is having the more practical stuff that you would need to see and that is somewhat necessary to view. Below, I had an old screen shot I took with other clutter on the screen that I Photoshoped out so you could see how I normally have my stuff positioned and set-up.

Quote:Guinness World Records for Gamer's just called, they wanted to congratulate you for having the most characters in a MMO game.I have 462 toons over six accounts. I used to have one of every hero archetype primary/secondary combo, but it has become impossible to keep up.
My current goal is to get them all over lvl 11 so they can hold 10 recipes (maybe 30 or so are not lvl 11 yet). I log in every 40 days (sometimes more often) on each of them that are on active accounts (I sometimes let a few accounts drop) and trade with them, move them to new day job badges etc
I think I have quite severe altitis :-)
About 20 of them are lvl 50. Have been playing since June 2008.
-
I got to thinking about this today regarding toons that we build, get them to 50 and then park them because we needed a break from them for awhile or maybe we wanted to work on a new build. When I first started up CoX back in Jan. 09' I would always try and make a concerted effort in getting one to 50 before I would start up with another toon. When the Demon Summoning came out, I had to build another MM with that set and try that out. When the Electric Control came out, I had to build a Dominator and try that out. I got curious about being a Scrapper so I started one of those out about a month ago. Needless to say, I had a few toons scattered about below level 50 that I didn't play long enough to get to level 50. Besides, its the journey in this game not the race that counts right?...heh..heh..
.
Anyways, this got me thinking now that GR is out and we now have the advantage to "wake-up" those sleepy toons we seldom play. Out of my 13 toons I built so far, I would say about half are villains and the other half heros. So far, I have moved two toons over. One to red side and the other to blue side. I eventually plan to switch them all over from their opposing sides. Normally, when I don't play them, I would park them to earn some day badges, moving them every-so-often to get new day badges.
With that being said, this also got me thinking about those out there in CoX land who have tons, and I don't mean 13, 20 or 30 toons, I'm talking 50 plus toons. I think I recall one person who said in one of these forums they had maxed out all the server slots with their toons. At that time it was 12 slots per server times, what 12 servers = 144 toons? I have a hard time managing 13 toons let alone 144 toons..lol. Didn't know if they were pulling someones leg or what? My thinking in this game is to build, develop and experience new toons. Should I like a particular Archetype, I may build more. I think everyone has their own pace they might like to go at.
I have yet to build a Arachnos Soldier and a Brute. I did build a few Tankers only to delete them as I didn't care for that Archetype based on my playing style. I also built a Defender only to delete them as that was not my playing style to be the "healer". I can appreciate those who do this build to keep us alive though..hehe...heh. Built a Peacebringer and deleted them as I was working only on the human form then got bored with them. So back to my question on those of you who "do" have a plethora of toons at hand. How do you manage them? Are you parking some for day badges or trying to experience every Archetype so you can decide what works best for you? I'd be really curious to know how you keep those "sleepy" toons active. -

Quote:This I know. What I meant when I said RWZ portholes was when going through those portholes, if you immediately turn around once your enter the Vanguard base, the porthole will show the opposite zones. I guess what I need to do is run to the other side and exit back through the right porthole rather than just turn around.Remember Fusion_7, there are TWO portal exits in RWZ. One goes to Paragon City. The other goes to Rogue Isles. Make sure you are in front of the correct one.
And as for the Ouroboros Porthole, then is it my understanding that until we can complete the "full" alignment and when I say full, I mean that your Villain bar is full and your full title is now a villain and conversely your hero bar full and your title bar now is hero, that we will always get the reverse zone from Ouroboros? And thus, if we intend to use Ouroboros, not to have any tip mission we intend to do? I guess I need to read more up on this. -
Thought about posting this in the Technical Issues and Bugs, but I thought that this problem is so blatant, that I could not imagine this being a bug. When you switch sides, lets say from blue side to red side or vice versa, from hero to rouge or vigilante/villain. When you use the Ouroboros Portal to shorten the trip, it will give you the opposite zones. For example, if you're red side and in Grandville and have a tip mission in Port Oaks, I would normally open up the portal to go to Cap au Diable, then catch the ferry from there to Port Oaks. Well, when I get to Ouroboros and then open up the portal there, I will get blues side zones not red side. Conversely when you are switched over to blue side, you will get red side zones via Ouroboros Portal. And you will lose any accumulated tips should you try and go to the opposite zones. The same holds true for the Vanguard portal going into the RWZ. Should you try and come back out, it will give you opposite zones.
If you try and use Pocket D to shorten the trip and exit to your new alignment side, red or blue, you will get that message that says you will lose any current tip missions accrued. So, am I missing something here? Both my toons I have tried this on, my hero to villain and my villain to hero are having the same problems here. Keep in mind that both have not fully integrated over "full all out hero status" or "full all out villain status" yet. Does this have something to do with that, being that both my toons are not 100% aligned just yet and because of this, when traveling via Ouroboros or Pocket D, you will lose your current accumulated tips and Ouroboros will not give you the proper zones? -
Quote:Aha!!!, I knew there was something amiss here...heh.heh. Yes, this being my "first" melee type toon that I built and I am "more close" to the action, the fact that I only slotted SO's and not IO's that are knockback friendly and the fact that I built this toon as a fire/fire Scrapper that does not offer the best in knockback protection, would definitely explain a lot here. I have no complaints with my build as a fire/fire and love the damage output, thus I will most likely add the necessary IO's to help with the knockbacks. I mean when you got Yellows and Whites knocking you down, then it's time to re-evaluate...lol.As I recall, this is your first "armored" toon, IE, scrap/tank/brute.
Welcome to the wonderful world of brutal melee combat!
In melee, there are not just more status effects flying around, there are WAY more. And /fire, as has been mentioned, has a big hole against those effects. So yes, you're getting planted on your bottom a lot more, because melee is not for the delicate.
To fix this, you can take and run acrobatics, or slot -kb IO's, or take IO sets than grant knockback resistance as part of their effects.
Of those three, I recommend either the IO's or the sets, depending on how slot-rich your build is.
Now, I would have pointed you at a /willpower instead of a /fire, you'd do a lot less damage but you'd feel...a lot tougher.
A LOT tougher.
But as long as you're having fun, play what you like! -
Built my first Scrapper about a month ago, now a level 41 Fire/Fire. The thing that I noticed with her during team play and solo play is the amount of knockback she gets. When I say knockback, I mean how much she gets knocked back on her butt..heh...heh. With all my other toons, Blaster, Controller, Widow, Corruptor, Dominator, MM, Stalker and Warshade, I cannot remember the amount of knockback being greater than with my Scrapper. I currently have her slotted with SO's but I am pretty sure I can get her slotted with better Invention Sets that might take some of the "land on her butt" away? It really is no big deal, all this knockback. I just thought through observation that it felt like the amount of knockback was "more" on this toon than my others. Is there something I'm missing here? Thanks.

Quote:Awhile back, I wrote a piece in the Tankers forum called "I'm a Gazelle, Not a Gorilla". What that meant was I never felt comfortable playing Tankers or Brutes. In that piece, I mentioned that I was more of an "offensive" type of player versus someone who likes to draw the aggro and take a pounding but will most likely sacrifice offense over defense. My philosophy was get in and kill as fast as you can without taking too much damage. I didn't want to stand there for five minutes "key mashing" my way to a kill, even though I'm not taking much damage as a Tank or Brute. Because of this, I was also skeptical of ever trying a Scrapper build being that I always felt that Scrappers and Tankers went hand and hand. I even built a few Tankers only to delete them after about 20 levels because I just didn't like they way they played.Scrapper vs brute?? I want a fire/fire toon. Not sure which build. Ive never had a brute and not sure of the damage output. It will be moved to hero side asap. Just dont know which would be better to play. Any tips or advice would be nice. TYVM
Well, about a month ago, I decided to pull the trigger on building my first Scrapper. I went with a Fire/Fire build. She is now level 41 and I have to say and to my surprise in team play and in solo play she is very fun to work with. With her primary Fiery Melee attacks in combo with her Fiery Aura powers, she is able to hold her own in battle very well. I would say the two biggest "keep me alive" type powers that I really could not do without are Consume and Healing Flames. Consume will suck the end from foes and Healing Flames does just that, heals you in that time of need. For Fiery Melee attacks, one of her more used powers is her Fire Sword Circle which gives a nice PBAoE for moderate damage.
I'm not bashing Tanks or Brutes here. I think it all comes down to your playing style. As I mentioned above, some people like to be the toon that draws all the aggro and is not necessarily concerned about doing a lot of offensive damage "quickly" as survivability and durability is more on their minds OR maybe you are more of that type of player who likes to go in for the kill, maybe have more quick offensive attacks at your hand and are not too concerned about taking some hits sacrificing defense, then maybe you should go Scrapper and try it out. I have also been the Tank substitute on some teams when we didn't have a Tank. That was fun, diving in the middle of a large group and whaling my Fiery Sword Circle around. It kind of gives you a little rush..heh...heh. -
Quote:Out of all my toons, Arachnos Widow, Blaster, Controller, Corruptor, Dominator, Mastermind, Scrapper and Warshade, I would say for a Very High Damage, precise single target attack, this one on my Stalker does it best. My Blasters Nova is my best AoE weapon but for sheer single target attack, I can say that AS is very powerful. Before I normally use it, I would activate my Build Up (if it's fully charged) maybe pop a couple of reds (depending how tough the foe is) and then of course be in "hidden" mode which is what makes this power work so effective.Bit of a noob question, but it's become a point of contention ...
In what ways can Assassin Strike be interrupted?
A SG mate of mine gets annoyed when I enter a spawn with my brute BEFORE their AS, claiming it wrecks it.
(chance for crit only, not full AS)
I contend that once the AS is started, only movement by the stalker itself or AoE damage would interrupt it, not any initial movement of the target. I also don't want them to get creamed by a partial alpha from the aggro.
Can anyone give me a good analysis of AS mechanics? What's the best way to coordinate an attack?
As paragonwiki describes it: "A signature Stalker attack. This attack does moderate damage on its own as a frontal attack. However, if it is executed while you are Hidden, this attack will do tremendous Smashing and Energy damage as you waylay your unsuspecting foe. This attack may be interrupted if you move or are attacked while executing this power."
I have been in mish'es where I was the one to sneak up behind the AV and use AS to take the initial blow. Of course, one blow on an AV won't take them out but it will sure help knock down his life bar a bit. The tricky part is after you strike, to get the heck out of the way for the tank to draw aggro back, otherwise you will have an AV chasing you around until you can hide from site and go back into "hidden" mode. You would also hope your teammates will draw some aggro if the tank doesn't do it right away.
I have also noticed a weird kind of phenomenon that sometimes happens with this power. I would describe it as a "wiff" where you hit nothing but air...lol. You, of course, can reload again once AS recharges and go at it again. The good thing is you will still be in hidden mode so you won't be exposed on that miss. The big key thing here is to aways try to be in hidden mode to get the most from AS. It is intended to be used best while hidden and to do the most damage. Lol, you know after re-reading your question again, I though the OP was the Stalker, then I realized the OP was the Brute and the OPs friend as the Stalker...heh..heh. The OP should start up a Stalker and try them out.And if anything, at least you know a bit more about AS right? Hope this helps

Yeah, after I got back on with my red side toon, I ran a couple more radio mish'es and sure enough, the tips started coming and the tip info guy showed up on the bottom of the tip tab section.
So, this morning I was able to fully run the final Morality Mission with Ghost Widow with one of my heros. When I exited the mish, it put me right back in PI where I started blue side. I then went to Pocket D and got to the vator, a prompt came up saying I am about to venture to the Rogue Isles and I would lose any Hero Merrits that I have accumulated while on blue side. I went through and bam! there I was red side! Felt kinda weird. Heh, heh.
Now the next question I have is it now showed three bars in my Tip Window.
Hero
Rogue
Villain
I am currently considered a Rogue which was my middle bar. So, to be come a "full" villain, I assume you need to run more tip mish'es red side and you will get not two choice now but three, would that sound correct? Being that now I have three moral choice to make on my path. The thing that I am still a bit confused about is when I think of "Rogue" I think of "Villain".
The dictionary description of Rogue is: "A dishonest or unprincipled person - A person whose behavior one disapproves of but who is nonetheless likable or attractive.
As for Villain: "A person guilty or capable of a crime or wickedness - The person or thing responsible for specified trouble, harm, or damage."
So, with that being said, would I be right in saying that a Rogue Toon is less evil than a pure villain? basically 50/50 half good and half bad versus a villain being 100% bad? -
I know this question has probably been beaten to death here in these forums so because of that, I invite anyone with a quick link on this subject or maybe an easy answer. From what I read, in order to receive a tip, you need to fight foes level 20 or higher. You can only get so many tips missions a day, I think 5 is the max within a 24 hour period, does that sound right?
Yesterday, I took my Hero Blaster out and did some Vigilante missions to bring her to the dark side. I filled her 5 tip missions up. Not sure if that 24 hour time frame for more tips is an exact 24 hours since my last log in with that toon? This morning, I thought I would run a toon red side on some hero missions. I ran at least four radio missions in Grandville and one mission in Cimeroa and I received no tips which I thought was unusual because when I logged on my hero toon red side yesterday, I was immediately given two new contacts to obtain tips missions but I did not get any new contacts with my red side toon this morning to obtain tips missions. I double checked to make sure everything that needs to be enabled was.
Is there something I am missing here regarding tips? Thanks. -
Just got my elec/elec Dom to level 22. Didn't know if you can buy SO enhancements in Praetoria? My guess is no since Praetoria is a level 1-20 zone. Thus, I guess I will need to make my final journey across the great divide we call the rift...heheh. Well, it was nice while it lasted.
