So I'm trying to make a DM/Shield build that can run the MG -> Smite -> SL -> Smite chain with endurance efficiency, and I decided to take my first stab at the calculations necessary for it. Here are the numbers I've come up with:
Endurance cost of the attack chain: 3.25 end/sec
Base endurance recovery: 3.82 end/sec (with the approximate +.2 end/sec from the PS proc included)
Toggles/AD end use: .94 end/sec (assuming I hit AD every time it's up)
When I calculate my net endurance recovery, I end up with -.3 end/sec. If this is the case, I come to you for help in finding some extra endurance for my build. I'd like to keep melee defense at the soft-cap with ranged defense at 40% (or close to it). I refuse to slot the Glad Armor unique, that's just a wee bit too pricey for my tastes.
Here's the build I'm working with for the calculations. If any of you math gurus wouldn't mind taking a minute or two to check my math and possibly give me a hand with the build, it would be greatly appreciated!

I messed around with the build you posted and made some changes to it. I mainly tried to focus more on melee defense, as you'll get more bang for your buck there. This build has no purples and should be well under 2 bil. With 1 application of Divine Avalanche, your defense to melee damage is at the soft-cap. I didn't spend a ton of time with it, and I'm sure there's a lot more that you could do with it, but this is what I'd change at a first glance.
Anyways, here's the build. I tried to keep the slotting of your powers the same with the exception of health, which I just stripped off in the name of more melee defense. I put two Dark Watcher's Despair in Moonbeam so you'd get at least a little use out of it.

Hello everyone! I decided to finally make a Broadsword toon and try out Headsplitter for myself. On this particular build, I was trying to cap melee defense as easily as possible, and then beef up ranged as much as I could without spending too much cash. This build isn't going to be soloing any AV's, I just want it to be a fun toon to play.
For the attack chain, I wanted to use the Parry-> Hack-> HS-> Parry-> Hack-> Disembowel attack chain. I'm not sure on the recharge numbers, so please let me know if I need some extra recharge. If you guys wouldn't mind taking a few minutes to look over the build, I'd be very grateful.

This is a build I put together real quick just to see if I could, and it wasn't so hard. I did use Maneuvers, but everyone keeps talking about how good ElA is at end management, so I figured I'd do it anyways :P
Keep in mind, I've never actually run an ElA, but this is how I'd do an ElA build as a starting off point. I'm sure you could tweak it to make it more playable. It has 45.1% S/L defense with 37% Melee defense, so it's pretty survivable.

If you'd like the most bang for your buck scrapper build, I feel /SR is the way to you go. It costs very little to hit the soft-cap to all positional damage. After that, you can just try to pack in as much recharge/regen as you want (or get Aid Self and just go for recharge :P ).
My personal favorite is Claws/SR. Great single target DPS and I use Follow Up -> Focus -> Spin to great effect for AoE damage.
EDIT: I just re-read your post and noticed "massive AoE damage", and I'd probably then suggest Fire/SD. You don't get much more AoE-oriented than that, and it's only slightly more difficult to soft-cap than a /SR. -
Anyone who definitively states that there is a "worst set" for anything is probably not worth listening to.
Ice definitely has its role, and that role is handling large mobs and keeping ALL of the aggro. It has the most effective taunt aura in the game (Chilling Embrace) and Icicles to go with it. One of your questions concerned how difficult it was to get to the soft-cap? You can hit the soft-cap without any IO investment at all, thanks to Energy Absorption. I believe it's the only set in the game that can claim that, though I could be wrong.
To me, Ice is one of the most fun sets to play. I rolled an Ice/Fire, and despite the complete lack of mitigation of Fire, I very rarely faceplanted in regular team-play, and I didn't pick up Hibernate until 49 for a slot filler.
Ice is not weak by any means, but you will need some solid support for a few things in the game, namely the 54 AV's in the STF, and (I would assume) the Incarnate task forces as well. 54's are a little tough for a defense based set without some decent team support. I have tanked Recluse on my Ice before, but I had to rely on Hibernate and orange inspirations quite heavily. I've never run the Incarnate task forces on him.
If you plan on IO'ing the tank, achieving the S/L/E/N soft-cap with one target in range is very little challenge at all. I have yet to IO mine, but I am most certainly focusing on regeneration and recharge, to get Hoarfrost up as much as possible and to be able to heal off any damage that gets through my defenses when HF is down.
Ice is a blast, and one of my absolute favorite sets. And I never once looked at my toon and though "Damn, wish I'd rolled a [insert any other tanker primary here]." -

Thanks, you guys. I'm really liking that build, Iggy. Using some of Signpost's tips, I managed to get the soft-cap to S/L/E/N and perma-Rage, but your slotting brings the end cost down to 1.49 end/s whereas mine is sitting at 1.81 end/s. I'll be stealing some of those slotting ideas!

I decided to see what I could do with your build as far as defense. Although I agree with the others in that straight recharge would benefit you and your team in the long run, if you want to go with a set that will keep you alive all of the time, then slotting for ranged defense will do exactly that. I'm not really sure if I'd want to play this particular build, but if you wanted to work this build into your playstyle, then you will have soft-capped ranged defense and a ~9s PA downtime, which isn't bad; especially if you team a lot. However, to keep the soft-cap, you will have to constantly be re-casting Group Invis (every 120s) and use Hover.
But if you think all this is fine, and you still want a defense-based set, then give this a try
Edit: I didn't realize this until now, but this will not soft-cap you in combat, as I think the Grant invis defense bonus only applies when you're no attacking. However, it's still a pretty solid defense for something that usually has very little.

What's up everyone. My next goal is to make a really badass tank. My original intent was to make a Invul/SS, but as I was playing online today, the topic of DA tanks came up. From what I had heard, DA becomes amazing once you've slotted some IO's in it. So tonight I tried to properly IO out a tank using some tips I gathered by lurking the forums for the bit. What I've posted is the build I've concocted. I've IO'd one tank before, but not too seriously. It was an Ice/Fire that I used for herding, and this tank is entirely a different thing. What's up everyone. My next goal is to make a really badass tank. My original intent was to make a Invul/SS, but as I was playing online today, the topic of DA tanks came up. From what I had heard, DA becomes amazing once you've slotted some IO's in it. So tonight I tried to properly IO out a tank using some tips I gathered by lurking the forums for the bit. What I've posted is the build I've concocted. I've IO'd one tank before, but not too seriously. It was an Ice/Fire that I used for herding, and this tank is entirely a different thing. If you guys have any tips you could give me, or build advice on anything I've overlooked, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hey guys. A while ago, I asked for help in designing a high-end ill/storm build, and I'm sitting at 45 with him. However, as I get closer and closer to 50, I'm seeing some potential problems. I wanted to use him as an AV soloer that wasn't an ill/rad or ill/cold, so that meant perma-PA and some high DPS.
My first problem deals with PA. With the original build, I had PA down to perma, but I wanted to see if I could save a ton of influence and make some recharge sacrifices. It went from ~59s to ~63s. In my mind, this isn't a huge problem, as I read somewhere that since PA dismisses in 1s time intervals, you really have closer to 62-63s of PA, and Phantasm summons a Decoy to take the heat in that time that you need to re-cast PA.
So in summary, my first question: Will not having PA closer to 60s hurt my goal of soloing AV's?
My second problem arises with the storm pets. I had planned to use PA, Phantasm, Tornado, and LS to make up for the lack of a -regen power that cold and rad both have. However, as I play more and more with my controller with LS and Tornado in my arsenal, the more I realize that /Storm is a MASSIVE end hog. Just using all of my debuffs and summoning all of my pets leaves me at or less than 50% on my blue bar.
My second question: If I'm soloing AV's, is it a good decision to plan to use LS and Tornado, since they use such a massive amount of endurance and I'm also going to be using the Blind -> SW -> Blast -> SW chain.
Here's the build I'm working with at the moment. I don't want to make any major build sacrifices in the name of soloing AV's. I still want it to be functional on a normal team, as that's where I play most often. If you guys notice anything in my build that could be re-arranged to give me a little more recharge without adding more purples into the mix, that would be wonderful. And just for reference, at the moment, I plan on taking the endurance (cardio?) Alpha once I ding 50.

I was more just curious to see if the optimal attack chain for claws would outdo any damage buffs by the Musculature alpha slot. Does anyone know offhand (or have it saved anywhere) what the estimated DPS is of FU -> Slash -> Focus? I was actually going to calculate my DPS later tonight, so I could just compare the two. My question was more out of curiosity than for build advice. I really don't have much of an intention to take the recharge slot as, someone pointed out, I don't have any other powers that would benefit from the recharge other than hasten.
I hope I'm not sounding too noobish. I don't even know if there's a estimated DPS for that attack chain, as I don't delve too deeply into calculations; I'm just assuming. I can post the build I'm using if you guys would like me to and are feeling generous.
Edit: Also, the recharge I have on my Scrapper is 172.5%. I know that whenever I hit Geas and get the recharge boost, it puts me at 202.5% and I have the optimal chain. So I don't think 11% from the tier 1 slot would do it, but maybe the second tier would? -
So the first thing I did when I came back from my CoH break was dive into the incarnate stuff. I decided that since my endurance recovery was good, and I didn't have any accuracy issues, I'd just go for as much damage as I could, and chose the Musculature slot. But I was wondering whether the recharge slot might be better.
I run a Claws/SR, and my attack chain is FU -> Slash -> Focus -> Strike (I think that's what it's called, can't really remember). I know that FU -> Slash -> Focus is a better DPS, but it was always unattainable to me because of the +rech bonuses needed.
So to all of you number-crunching oriented fellows out there on the interwebs, would going for the recharge slot help me for single-target DPS in the long run, or is it a better idea to go for the more obvious slot, Musculature? -

Thanks for the tips. I rearranged my power choices based on your advice and moved some slots around to squeeze out some more recharge. I'm not planning on keeping my toggles on a whole lot, with the exception of Superior Invisibility. I played an Ill controller waaayyy back in the days before IO's, and I didn't remember the massive endurance consumption. I'll probably just be running Steamy Mist in teams and then Superior Invis whenever else.
The tip about dropping fighting for Thunderclap was great. I took boxing/tough/weave on my scrapper for that same reason but forgot all about TC. I also picked up/slotted Ice Blast for my attack chain and slotted Ice Breath with the Ragnarok set for some nice recharge bonuses.

Hey, what's up guys. I know there are already a million and one of these threads floating around, but I'd appreciate it if you guys could give my build a look-over and point out anything you see that I could do to would help out my build. I figure it's better to hear from some people who know what they're doing instead of just diving straight in, as I have no experience with IO'ing a controller.
I kinda had AV soloing in mind when I was considering the build. I know Ill/Rad would be more suitable for that kind of thing, but I didn't want to make one of those, so Ill/Storm struck my fancy. My plan with this build is to pack as much recharge as humanly possible into it; I figured that if I had PA up at all times, I wouldn't be taking much heat myself, so I didn't need to focus much on regen/defenses. I have no qualms over spending large sums of influence, though I refuse to slot any of the PvP recipes, as those prices are absolutely nuts.

I like to use my Scrapper mainly for AV's/Pylons/etc. It's fun taking down the bigger targets, so I'll keep the BU procs in. Besides, with double-stacked FU all of the time, most of what I attack is dead in a few hits.

So this is the build I've got planned out for the Incinerate > Scorch > Cremate > Scorch chain. I tried to keep the endurance cost as low as possible, because I had trouble reaching the softcap without Maneuvers, and don't want to drop enough influence to afford the PvP defense IO. Any critiques that would free up some slots or make it just a bit better are highly appreciated!

So I'm planning on running a Fire/SD scrapper as my next project. Does anyone know offhand what the optimal FM chain is with the recharge numbers needed for it?
