Quote:My apologies. I thought you were addressing the problem with the physics. Focusing on appearances alone, you are absolutely correct things will not look good. It's not about what's realistic. It's about what looks good. Fire underwater does not look good. It looks silly. Hurling boulders underwater does not look good. It looks silly. And, again, HOW do you envision something like Steamy Mist, Hurricane or Freezing Rain happening underwater? What about Storm Cloud? How do you foresee Mud Pots or Brimstone Armour working? How about Electrical Armour? Do you realise that if you do NOTHING and just plop those sets underwater with the exact same effects, the result would be ugly as sin?
Let me restate: This isn't about realism. This is about appeal. And certain things just DO NOT LOOK GOOD when done underwater. If I'm going to have a zone where I have to continually remind myself is actually underwater even though it doesn't feel like that in the slightest, then why even have a water zone? Champions' underwater locations that I saw didn't look underwater at all. They looked like a caves I could float inside. It takes more than just calling it underwater and enabling everyone to swim to make an underwater zone.
Also, remember how much we DON'T have. We have ONE swimming animation that only goes forward. We have no swim up, no swim down, no strafing. It's just horizontal movement. All of our powers are designed to work in air and on dry land, so you see wind, you see powers that kick up dust, you slow-burning fire, you see fast, energetic swings that display no drag, we hurl a lot of things with no feel of resistance. Put these things underwater, and you get something which is UGLY.
One of the reasons I like City of Heroes is because it is visually refined. Animations feel natural, to a large extent, motions are mostly fluid and force and impact are almost tangible. Effects look appropriate, and that matters a great deal. The only way for those effects to look appropriate underwater is for them to have custom swimming variants, which I plain don't see happening. But again, if you're talking about just making a free-flight zone with a blue tint and a short draw distance, then I can tell you here and now - such a thing would NOT look good.
Dungeon and Dragons Online has some believable underwater effects and swimming animations (it ignores the type of armor being worn tho) however powers/spells can't be cast underwater. Living creatures have a counter to measure holding their breathe and a character drowns if it reaches zero. It also distinguishes between character races that breathe and those that don't. If a race doesn't breathe it can stay underwater indefinitely. -
Merits and AE tickets denote character achievement not player achievement. If you want more merits or tickets on a character then play that character more.

Quote:I see your point of view. I was just trying to show that while one person can use the AE (or any other feature) to explain how their alts all know each other, that same feature can be used to justify the other sides point of view.Oh, I agree with you there. I was just pointing out that we shouldn't assign limits based on whether AE is technically considered "real" or not. Let's put out our ideas and assessments and let the devs consider whether they are worthwhile. We shouldn't let AE automatically put a kibosh on ideas simply because it's not considered "real."
See my response to Maniac_Raid concerning whether "realistically" two of our own characters could meet each other or not. That's the main point I was trying to make with regard to sharing between our own characters, whether we factor AE into the equation or not.
There's no wrong way to view our characters. We can see them as individuals or as extensions of ourselves. By that I mean the player earned the influence/loot as opposed to the inf/loot belongs to the character that earned it. It's almost a futile discussion because both sides can argue the validity of their respective point of view and neither side is wrong.
So I don't think the devs should put this feature into the game based on how people want to play. I think it should be put in because the game mechanics have evolved in a direction where it makes a lot of sense to implement it.
Side switching is just around the corner and hopefully we'll be able to take our inf with us as we go from hero to villain and vice versa, and I think this feature is the next logical step.
I hope that makes sense. -
Quote:You, I and everyone else can sit at our computers and imagine whatever we want, but at the end of the day the only people that can turn what they imagine into an ingame reality are the devs. The only power we have is what the devs allow us to have, and they will not hesitate to remove it whenever they want. Just ask the guys who were making Rikti and Mito farms. If they don't want us to do something they won't let us do it.Only if you choose to play it that way. None of my characters go play a video arcade; the missions they run in the AE are just as "real" as the missions they run outside of the AE. That's the essense of an RPG and the AE is one of the greatest RP tools ever added to an MMORPG.
Just because Paragon Studios had to come up with a means of separating "canon" from player-created content does not mean that the players have to view it the same way.
Now I do hope they change their minds, and I hope it gets done either before or when "Going Rogue" comes out.

Sam please forgive me if I find your position humerous. I will agree with you 100 percent about the sci-fi perspective because there we want to believe it could actually happen, but when you apply it to the super hero genre it's funny. The natural laws of physics don't apply in this genre, and I'm not talking about the powers themselves but how they get used. We've seen comics/cartoons/etc. where a hero rescues/lifts/carries/flies an ocean liner, super tanker, toppling building and they don't collapse/tear apart at the stress points like they would in the real world. Or a giant crevasse appears during an earthquake and the hero grabs the ground and pushes the earth back together then welds the ground shut with his heat vision.
Just look at that recent Superman movie. Lex caused massive portions of the ocean floor to suddenly rise to the surface, and we saw giant crevasses open up underwater using supermans vision, and we saw Superman lift millions of tons of rock and fly it into space yet those siesmic events caused no massive tidal waves. What happened in the movie was at least as massive a siesmic event as the earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean in 2004 and killed 240,000 people in 11 countries. -
Quote:Vet rewards are lame, huh? So... you'll never/have never made use of them? You're join date says October of this year, but that doesn't mean you haven't been playing for years so you'll see me asking in the past tense and future tense.
You have never/will never have a toon wear a trenchcoat?
You have never/will never use a vet respec?
You have never/will never use a free costume token?
You have never/will never use the Sands of Mu/Ghost Slaying Axe?
Are you saying that if/when you do get to 66 months that you will not use those extra slots given to you?
When I first read the OP's post I got the impression this is a case of sour grapes. I.E. The rewards are lame because he can't get instant gratification and get the rewards now. -
Quote:Reg date and post counts don't mean a thing. I have two accounts and I have never registered the second account on the forums. There are lots of people that have been playing constantly for years and have never registered their main accounts. Just as there are many 3-4-5 year vets with low post counts that rarely have anything to say.lol.
I was refering to forum replies, not broadcasts in game. I was hoping it would be clear, since i refered to a post in my last paragraph.
Then there are some people that bought accounts from other players and have early reg dates and decent number of post counts made by the previous owners.
None of us have any way of knowing who is on the other side of the internet unless we know the person in real life. -
Quote:Would it be positively stupid for the devs to assume that all player characters in the game are lifeforms that have lungs which require respiration to live?Would it be positively stupid to give everyone the ability to breath under water? Absolutely.
ABSOLUTELY!
I've encountered hundreds if not thousands of player characters that don't breathe.
Ghosts, Zombies, Vampires, Energy based life forms (No I don't mean Kheldians), Golems, Robots, Aliens, mineral based lifeforms, and Demons, just to name a few.
Given a choice do you think the devs are going to force players to sacrifice at least one power selection and up to 6 enhancement slots to breathe underwater, or do you think they'll choose to let the players come up with an explanation that explains why their character can function underwater indefinitely.
I'm betting they'll do the latter. -
Quote:Just to clarify because you don't seem to be aware of what the AE actually is.and *especially* not now that AE is available, and I can (if I wish) make a mission where any of my characters can team up with half of my own solo SG.
Architect Entertainment is a company created by Dr. Thaddeus Aeon AQSA, with Crey Industries funding. The prime motive of the company is to bring opportunity to all citizens of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles to create their very own pockets of theoretical existence for others to experience first hand as a new form of entertainment. The Mission Architect is the means by which these virtual realities are created and experienced.
In other words the characters in the missions you make for your alts to play are not real. Your alts are not actually meeting each other. The AE is basically the place your characters go to play videogames. The MA is a giant holographic video arcade. -
We can already swim underwater. They devs just haven't used it much yet. Maybe we'll see more of it in "Going Rogue". For now there's a Cimoran mission where you can swim underwater and a small pool in Grandville.
No need for a waterbreathing/swimming powerset. -
I doubt you'll find anyone that likes waiting for a vet reward they really like. I just hope it's some consolation that the people that are getting the higher vet rewards had to wait just as long as you will have to, to get them.
-
While I never liked the idea of costume items being linked to Vet Rewards, I understand that when they introduced the Vet Reward system they didn't have as many fluff choices to choose from as they do now. In the future I hope they refrain from adding more costume peices to the Vet Reward system.

Quote:Who cares if you don't like the rewards. You prolly won't even be here 66 months. I think the 66 month rewards are flippin awesome. Every single one of my characters can use 'em, and I only have to wait 4 months. YIPPEE!lame! why are the veteran rewards so lame? like, who cares about extra salvage slots? someone has been playing and paying for 60 odd months and they get this...
-
Why watse time on all that when it would probably be simpler to give us the ability to use the NPC's we unlock by earning our gladiator badges.

They are not going to give us interest on Inf for not playing the game. Don't stop dreamin tho.

Quote:One more thing about beacons. Actually about the RWZ beacon, unless there's been a change you can't get the last exploration badge unless you are participating in a mothership raid. The last badge in that zone is under the forcefield and can only be gotten when the FF is down.Just a quick addendum to Forbin's guide.
- When you craft the telepad, it goes into your "personal items" pocket. This means you will need to go out of regular editing mode and go into "add personal item" edit mode in order to place them. This is true for all crafted base items, as well as veteran reward items
- Beacons can be found in the regular edit mode, purchasable through the items tab for teleport rooms. Remember, to get the beacons you must hit the exploration badges in a zone while in SG mode. If you by chance get a badge while not in SG mode, fear not, you can go back and hit it again with SG mode on and it will credit toward the beacon.

Quote:I just made my own SG and now want to make my base. How do I do this? All I want are teleporters, nothing else really
thanks
Teleportation Base on a budget
First off you will want to get filler's into your SG roster so you can take advantage of the free prestige you get for the first 15 members. You can do this by getting friends to fill in the slots or you can get one person to invite your alts into the SG. the full 15 will net you 300,000 prestige.
The first thing you want to get is:
Oversight Center - 50,000
Combo Power Control Unit - 25,000
That will provide you with the power and control you will need to operate the teleporter.
Then you'll want to temporarily buy the smallest Workshop room and the Basic Worktable in order to craft the Telepad. You will also need the right combination of invention salvage to craft the Telepad recipe. There are several to choose from.
Tech Telepad
1 Computer Virus, 1 Polycarbon, and 1 Luck Charm
Or
1 Circuit Board, 1 Steel, and 1 Rune
Or
1 Temporal Analyzer, 1 Titanium Shard, and 1 Fortune
Arcane Telepad
1 Clockwork Winder, 1 Temporal Sands, and 1 Simple Chemical
Or
1 Alchemical Silver, 1 Symbol, and 1 Inert Gas
Or
1 Ruby, 1 Destiny, and 1 Silver
Once you have crafted your Telepad you can delete the Workshop room and Worktable. Then you will buy the Teleport Room and place the Telepad.
Teleport Bay 1x2 room - 50,000
Basic Telepad - 15,000
At this point you will have spent a total of 140,000 prestige. The balance you can spend on beacons. Teleport Beacons cost 10,000 prestige each, that means you will be able to buy 16 beacons.
As others have explained you can easily swap out the beacons to get where you need to go until you save up enough prestige to expand your base into larger teleport rooms with more pads.
Also if you are running villainside you only need 9 beacons so that will have extra prestige left over to play with. -
Is there some new feature I missed that lets me know that name I see in a chat channel asking a question belongs to a new player? Cuz unless I'm standing close enough to the questioner to check its vet badges I have no idea how long its been playing the game.
Also I've been playing for 60+ months and theres a lot of stuff I still don't know about the game. If I'm clueless about a lot of stuff why would I assume that someone asking a question is a new player. -
Quote:This. This is actually a pretty sane way to price your items. Just recall how the system works:
Ex. 1 - Place an item for sale at 100 inf. Highest outstanding bid to purchase said item is 100,000. Item sells for 100,000 inf.
Ex. 2 - Place an item for sale for 50,000 inf. Highest outstanding bid to purchase is 100,000. Item sells for 100,000 inf.
Ex. 3 - Place an item for sale for 1,000,000 inf. Highest outstanding bid to purchase is 100,000 even though the last 5 sold for considerably more than that, "tricking" the seller to list at a higher price. Item sits on the market unsold.
Your listing fee in Ex. 1 is only 5 inf, and you still get the 100,000 (less the commissions). Why would you not list at that price?
The only thing to remember is to make sure you list the item for the minimum amount you are willing to accept for it. Listing it at 100 might mean that you will only get 95 (100 - 5). For lots of characters that's an acceptable price (especially compared to the vendor price of common salvage of 250).
The listing fee is WAI, so sorry, /unsigned.
P.S. Zolgar - this is also my strategy at the market, for the most part, so you are not so single-handed. -
Quote:No prob Crim. The imression I've gotten from the OP's responses is that he's kind of guy that will stare at a person making a reasonable, well thought out response, with a blank look of total incomprehension. So I tried his native language.Sorry Forbin_Project but the next part of my post wont be near as mature as the last one.
