Quote:Yep. A forum member posted that he got silenced when people used our version of the feature to petition him a couple of months ago and he was at that time upset because the GM that reviewed the petitions that were made against him agreed he was indeed spamming and suspended his ability to use all the chat channels for 24 hours.Unless i'm mistaken, in CoH it's not automated process and a GM has to do it. Whereas in CO it's automated with no oversight by a human.
Having a human being in the loop allows the intent of a series of messages to be considered instead of arbitrarily silencing someone just because a certain number of petitions are filed.
Our GM looked at the content of messages the forum member was filling the chat channels with and determined that even tho he was changing the sentence structure of his message and the frequency he was posting his message, what he was doing was still spamming. -
Quote:Yeah, only a genius could retain her human conciousness and sanity after being converted into a Dalek.I disagree, she was a genius! She did some crazy hacking skills, and I believe she probably could have done what you are saying, but she lost all hope, and there wasn't enough time for that, plus she probably would have needed some of her UN-altered DNA, and I don't think there was any source of that any more. That poor woman.
-
Because a portion of their community jumped ship from CoH to CO and didn't have the nerve to admit how much Champions sucks and return so now feel guilty that their stupid pride contributed to the downfall of this game and their now stuck with CO or worse DCUO.

Quote:When someone first told me about this "feature" I assumed they simply misunderstood. Because no one could possibly be dumb enough to put this sort of feature into the game.
I was wrong.
For those unaware, in CO there's an auto chat banning system where if you are petitioned more than X number of times by other players, the game will auto silence you from chat. I think from *all* chat. For a long time. It was meant to allow players to self-police RMT sellers.
Which in and of itself is prone to abuse, but that abuse can lead to your own account being banned if you do it too much.
And then they went F2P.
Remember all the debates we had here about how important it was to be careful about what free players could do, what premium players (who didn't sub but bought something at least once) could do, and what VIP subs could do? In CO, F2P players can petition towards auto-banning.
The rest is left as an exercise for the reader. PS: I have eight F2P City of Heroes accounts.
They first introduced that stupid feature in STO, and it was immediately abused by a "fleet" of EVE players. Thru trial and error they quickly deteermind eactly how many petitions needed to be filed to get people chat banned and then enmass started griefing the chat channels. Ultimately Cryptic had to start banning the accounts of people abusing auto-silence feature.
And of course true to form Cryptic didn't learn from their mistakes and added the feature to CO. -
Quote:So far in GW2 I haven't been forced to interact with anyone. I have soloed every mission given to me. The other players in the game are no more irritating than any other background NPC, and unlike this game NPC's can't push you out of the way like you're a bag of feathers. If by "no different from City of Heroes" you mean "completely different from City of Heroes," then yes.
I want instanced missions that tell a story. I don't want overworld tasks that exist for the sake of having something to do. I would sooner play an MMO that's all instances than an MMO that has few if any instances at all. I don't need (or want) to see other people in the game world, and Angry Joe's touted "social" side of overworld questing doesn't make me feel more social. It makes me feel more irritated that other people are stepping in on my game time.
I'm by far at my most sociable in City of Heroes, when I'm by myself in an instance and I'm not forced to interact with other people. That's, really, the only time I ever feel like I WANT to interact with them - when they're not in my face.
The only time I've socialized with anyone was on my terms when I feel the need to chat, or be helpful and answer questions.
I don't have to worry about someone stealing my loot cuz just like here everyone gets their own drops.
All that being said, if I hadn't bought the GW2 before NCSoft pulled this bull____ method of shutting down CoH I wouldn't be playing the game today. But since I spent the money already and I can't get a refund I'm not making a gift of what I spent to purchase GW2. I'm getting my monies worth and they aren't getting a dime more out of me. Just like PWE hasn't seen a dime out of my since they took over Cryptics games. -
Quote:Wrong. I said the genre/story does matter. It's what helps you forget the repetitive nature of all the content. The more you like the genre/story the longer the game will keep you interested. People that can't enjoy the genre/story get bored quickly and leave frequently or move on to other games permanently.YOU may think it does not mater, but it makes a whole world of difference.
Quote:If this was like any other MMO, after I take take care of Dr Vahzilok for good... he still spawning in Steel Cannon and I keep bumping into him.
With the current model, you defeat Dr Vahzilok and you dont get to see him again (unless you time travel.)
There are some world spawns that keep popping up, but those are not tied up to the story.
You also wouldn't have seen people whining for years about how sick and tired they were of running the same content over and over again.
Every MMO thrives or dies on it's replayability. We at CoH bragged about how well our devs succeeded at this by focusing on the journey rather than the endgame.
We succeeded at retaining a solid core of customers for over 8 years and could have continued succeeding a lot longer if NCSoft hadn't made the decision that the Western market wasn't profitable enough to keep maintaining the game. -
Quote:All missions/quests in every MMO are the same variation of kill things, click glowies, or solve the puzzle. It doesn't matter if they are instanced or open world, It's all the same. The only difference is the genre/story. If the genre/story is interesting to you, you won't notice the repetitive grind.None of the missions in City of Heroes follow that style of overworld questing except for the very few low level missions in newbie zones introduced when we went to free to play.
EDIT: Except for hunt missions, which I forgot about, since they are so easily avoided, and nearly absent from later content. -
Quote:I bought GW2 before the CoH news. I'm not particularly impressed with it so far. I mean, yes, it's an MMO. And the character creation tool is very nice.
But so far I don't see much about it that makes it significantly better than Rift, WoW, or that Star Wars game. The quests are somewhat better than those games, but only marginally. It's still basically "Help Farmer Jill Save Her Chickens" type of stuff where you and the 20 other people nearby are each tasked with killing 15 velicoraptors.
The "events" do work better than Rift's rift events, IMO, but I also think they will suffer the same low participation problem Rift did once everyone levels up and moves out of the newbie areas.Quote:That's what killed me about the quests, too. I played as a Norn, and almost all of my quests constituted "Go to this idol and do menial tasks to worship the animal of the idol." Tasks went from relatively interesting like raiding a monster mine to save kidnapped lion cubs to the mundane of killing invading critters, to the downright bizzarre like catching fish and feeding it to bear cubs. The story behind them? Erm... I'm honouring the animal spirits. That's about it.
Once upon a time, I chided City of Villains - and chided it severely - for having what passes for stories that's actually nothing but time-wasting busy-work. You need look no farther than Angelo Vendetti or Lorenz Ansaldo or the ******* Shadowy Figure. Their stories come out of nowhere, go nowhere and accomplish nothing. They "reward" me with "money" by telling me I've been rewarded by money, but they reward ME - the player - with jack ****. Money, loot, experience... Yeah, being rewarded with numbers is nice, I guess, but consider what classic City of Heroes story arcs reward me with: Story!
A mission reveals that the Skulls are working for the Family, selling drugs to the Trolls. Another mission reveals that the Clockwork King's minions aren't robots at all, but psychically-controlled puppets. Another mission still shows me that Requiem is a hypocrite who pretends to rule the 5th Column with ideology, but is just after power in the end. These are rewards which flesh out the world and give me reason to care. They stem from the game's bountiful lore, they add to that lore and they bring me more of the story such that I have something to care about. I CARE that 50 years ago, America drafted its super heroes, and the shadowy conspiracy that stood behind this "Might For Right" act. I care that Nemesis punked the Freedom Phalanx back in 2002 when he never actually left and spent years building up his armies.
I don't care that the bear spirit's cubs are fed and its shamen are lying in a bloody puddle. I don't care that random rampaging minotaurs are no longer rampaging, despite seeing them off in the distance rampaging away. It's busywork. And it's busywork that never ends. I can clear out an instance and feel satisfied. I can't clear out the overworld because it has to account for other people, so I can never SEE myself accomplishing anything. Sure, the major "personal storyline" quests are top notch, but that's not the bulk of what I spend my time doing.
So the missions/quests are no different than any other MMO including this one. You just prefer the CoH genre. -
Aw man I've actually been craving food from there. Especially their fries.
And personally if I'd have gotten that message I'd be hoping the the global Rangle M. Down was her way of saying what she wanted to do to me, and not her boyfriend/hubbie's global.
Shame I couldn't watch that scene unfold at the restaurant. -
If it were a choice between buying and playing a stand alone CoH game and never playing any version of CoH ever again, I'd by the stand alone game in a heart beat.

Guild Wars is a known commodity that has a record of outperforming CoH, and therefore it is perfectly reasonable to expect that the sequel Guild Wars 2 will be just as successful and maybe even more popular.

Quote:I won't speak for anyone else, but I think it's okay for a person to choose not to support NCSoft IP's if want.Well, I wouldn't have gone with a murdered pet analogy myself. I just said died in my earlier post to represent antagonizing someone who is grieving, but I'll run with it. Yes, Person A did kill my pet. And while I wouldn't advocate killing anyone else's pet, I damn sure don't see how anyone could expect me to feed one of Person A's dogs.
Look, I can only speak for myself. I'm not angry at posters on the forum saying they want to play GW2 in spite of what happened. What I'm angry about is the rampant, "You don't want to give money to a company that just screwed you over? That's crazy talk!" that is all over the board. I've already put one person on ignore for being a complete... word I don't use in public about the issue. I do not trust NCSoft. Therefore, I cannot trust any of their products. The people at ArenaNet might be hiding angel wings under their jackets, but they still produce an NCSoft product.
However put the blame on the right people. The ones that actually made the decision to shut us down. Arenanet is a subsidiary in the same boat Paragon Studios is/was in. What happened to us could just as suddenly happen to them.
This is an ugly situation where little guys always get stomped on while the fat cats always walk away with millions unless they get caught doing something illegal.
Edit: Oh and just for the record about the killed/murdered pet analogy, I was thinking of a scenario where someone was being reckless and driving too fast down a street and a pet was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I saw this happen more than a few times growing up because I used to live on an alley barely wide enough for two cars side by side and a posted 10 mile an hour speed limit, but we always had a couple ********* that would barrel down the street at 35-40 miles an hour. Several pets were hit over the years, thank god no kids tho. -

Quote:So does that mean you'll just be giving it to us?Unfortunately this is appearing due to a bug with the store publishing process.
So everyone is aware: There will no be no new releases to the Paragon Market prior to the planned date of November 30th announced by NCsoft. -
Quote:How about giving gold member a monthly prestige stipend so that several of them could get together and build a decent sized base on an alternate server in a decent amount of time, even if that isn't the sever that they spend the majority of their play sessions. That was one of the reasons the core group that I played with stayed on one server, we had a maxed out base and didn't want to start from scratch. If we were able to plop down a chunk of prestige that was saved up in order to have a small to medium base in a short amount of time we might of ventured out and met new people.
I already did that by myself selling the ATO's from Super Packs on the market for billions of inf and converting it to prestige.
A group of players doing as I did could easily acquire tens of millions of prestige in an evening. -

REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SERVERS
You can't have my names.
You can't have my character slots. Merging any servers would put me over the limit of 48 per server.
You can't delete my characters. Where are my characters going to go when the number of available slots on an account is less than the number of characters I had before the merge.
You can't break up my server communities.
You can't disband my SG's.
You can't delete my bases. -
Only god knows how many years independent retailers/people will be trying to sell their copies of CoH on Amazon to suckers.
You can still get copies of Auto Assault, Dungeon Runners, and Tabula Rasa from Amazon.

Quote:By that he means you can only apply (1) one code for the Going Rogue Edition per account. Codes for the same edition don't stack.Gave out my two Going Rogue codes.
Remember, you can only apply codes that have NOT previously been applied to the account.
So if you buy two copies of the same edition you will have to use the codes on seperate accounts.
This applies to all editions/expansions.
So an account can have codes for:
1 City of Heroes
1 CoH Collectors DvD edition
1 City of Villains
1 City of Villains Collectors Edition
1 Good vs Evil
1 MAC edition
1 Architect edition
1 Going Rogue edition -
Quote:Although I don't disagree with you on that part... or for those who have read the announcement and not actually tried it, the announcement *does* state:
So, it all depends on how you read into it. To me, it *does* heavily imply that the Paragon Market is offlined, and that you *cannot* buy anything from it.
Yeah, it's poorly worded. It should have specified purchasing Paragon Points was disabled. -
And some people are coming off like their pet was killed by Person "A" and not only wants his pets killed as payback (an eye for an eye justice) but they also want to kill the pets of everyone remotely associated with Person "A" even tho they had nothing to do it.
-
Quote:In the case of Dungeon Runners all that stuff was decided before they made the announcement they were shutting down, and no one was surprised when the announcement was made. Employees were being let go steadily for over a year, and no new projects were being worked on. They knew well in advance how poorly the game was doing.Though in fairness we haven't yet had any more announcements than the game is going down. I think Zwillinger(?) has said that there will be announcements regarding VIP and Premium players. Plus I suspect deals for refunds and other IP giveaways/deals (GW2 &/ Aion I'd guess). Because the shutdown is following (so far) the overall outlines of their other shutdowns and while their business sense may or may not be lacking they will try and make as good a situation from this as they can. (Other than taking their heads out of the sand and cancelling this shutdown ofc.)
That isn't what happened to us. PS had other projects being developed, and new issues and content ready to be released. Everyone was blindsided and no preparations were made in advance other than surprising the people at Paragon and us with the termination orders.
So I'm sorry this shut down is nothing like what happened to Dungeon Runners.
I didn't play Auto Assault, Tabula Rossa, or Exsteel so I have no idea how their shutdowns went. -
