This has always been a head scratcher for me, and I have heard it before. I've roleplayed as many men as women without a second thought, and it just doesn't feel any more difficult. I mean, what is the difference, anyway, when I'm already making a point of the character I play not being me? I mean, sure, "write what you know" is still the same strategy I use for my characters, but I don't feel it's inapplicable to the male ones. Just because The Hour Thief is a man doesn't mean I can't write what I know in terms of his being a reader, or a tea drinker, or an idealist, or terribly lonely. Hell, it's a superhero game - I'm writing what I don't know half the time anyway even when I'm playing a female character. I may not be a man, but I'm not a suffragette who got booted 100 years into the future (read: the present day) either, and I'm pretty sure none of us can fly or shoot fire or build a robot army. Next to everything else I'd have to portray without ever having experienced it, being male just feels like a drop in the ocean to me... maybe I'm weird.

Quote:I wouldn't go so far as to say "offended," so much as "annoyed."I personally adopted the term, '' Girl Gamer '' and made it a part of my routine. When I go on Xbox Live to frag some people the first thing I do is declare; '' Hi, I'm a girl gamer. I'm not here to flirt, no I don't want your package, and yes I'm married. Now that we've got that out of the way, sup? '' Over zealous, childish, and verging on lulzworthy? Yeah, I know. However, it drives the point home and after about a few rounds of silence or being ignored after the ''married'' part I start getting people yelling at me for constant head shots. Or they scream out of anger for my sneaky skills, or give me props on knowing how to do this or that.
Same in WoW, when I first started people were like '' ZOMG GIRL ON MIC R U HAWT? '' and even when I did webcam with a group it was, '' ZOMG U R SINGLE. SH0W UR BODY '' which was funny, got a little offended but over time I gained respect in the circle after pwning in PVP. Seeing how the attitudes have changed over time; it has gotten better but people would rather note a female player as a '' Girl Gamer'' than a woman, and again, I don't see us losing the eye of males due to ''us'' being a rarity for at least another 3-4 years.
It's just how it works, so that's my take on the term ''Girl Gamer.'' Turned into a mini-rant. Meh. In short, sorry if I offended you for using that term it's just something I personally have accepted as part of my lifestyle until the term '' Woman Gamer '' becomes popular. Hell, I'd even take '' Milf Gamer'' over it. But, it's the world we game in for now. But soon, it won't be a males digital paradise, it'll be ours.
Maybe it's because I'm not a console user, and never have been even when I was in the clunky-black-and-white-game-boy stage (I didn't have one; I played PC games even then) and that WoW only kept my interest for about ten minutes before I got bored and came back to CoH, but somehow I've never had these conversations with my male fellows that you describe - they just skip straight to the part where I'm being yelled at for using cheap moves with Zasalamel if it's in person, and if it's mentioned online it's somehow never a big deal (for instance, while on a male character, "also I have a huge crush on Richard Hammond" "wait youre gay?" "no, female" "oh, ok then" and that was that).
I dunno, it's probably just the huge dissonance in your experience and mine. To me it's never been a big deal unless the woman in the equation makes a big deal of it, so I've basically come to the conclusion that it'd stop being a big deal, ever, if people would just quit starting things. It also probably doesn't help that a friend of mine tries to paint herself as a gamer when she really doesn't care about anything but the cosplay and the attention it gets her. -
Here's something that's good for use with tights: Back emblems. Exactly like chest emblems, but on the back. They could attach in the Back Detail slot, right? I mean, it's not like you need both a back emblem AND any of the back details we already have, since a cape, backpack, or wings would just obscure it anyway.
Also, more emblems. I can't believe we don't have a simple teardrop shape to use. Or SHINY emblems! That would be so cool, to have your spandex or leather tights and then a metallic emblem that's still flush with the surface of your tights... or to have a version that glows in the dark, that'd be sick... okay I'm getting sidetracked here, I'll stop now
But seriously, emblems are such an important part of tights outfits that I feel this isn't really misplaced. -
This could be as simple as adding new primary/secondary color mask patterns for the Long and Short capes we already have. Unfortunately it would probably not be doable to add an emblem on top of an existing cape pattern (example, no using the Points cape pattern and then adding a Medieval 1 emblem to it - would only be able to add a Medieval 1 cape pattern) due to the way cape physics work, but it would still be cool.
Would be trickier for trenchcoats... but seeing as we aren't allowed to use back details with trenchcoats anyway, that's an attachment point that could be used. It'd take some new modeling but they could work just like chest emblems. -
Personally, I hate the notion of the "girl gamer." I am a woman who plays video games. That's all. I'm not special or different for it, I'm not trying to be cool, I'm not trying to be one of the guys, and I'm frankly a little embarrassed that I do fall into almost all the stereotypes.
To answer your questions:
I play blue. I used to play red exclusively, then slowly started drifting over, then noticed that people actually PLAY on blueside so I stuck around.
I enjoy playing every AT except blaster and stalker. I most prefer what might be called "aggressive support," meaning "controllers and defenders that can hold their own in scrapperlock." The four toons I play most often are an Ill/Rad controller, a Grav/Kin controller, a Time/Sonic defender, and a melee fortunata. For a long time I also had a BS/Shield scrapper and a Grav/Rad troller that I enjoyed a lot but I play them less these days.
My favorite zone is probably Croatoa.
Of the three characters (as distinct from toons - keep reading) I play, the Ill/Rad is a woman, the Grav/Kin and Time/Sonic who are two versions of the same person are a man, and the Fortunata is a vaguely female Cthulhubeast.
I am a roleplayer. Every one of my characters has a concept behind it, and the reason I only really play three of them out of the many, many alts I've come up with is so I can keep track of personalities and story interaction with the other people in my RPSG (and so the rest of my SGmates can too). The Ill/Rad is a time-displaced scientist from the age of steampunk who is delighted that she can now vote and have a doctorate in a field that means something - not to mention is fascinated by all the advancements in technology over the past hundred years, the Grav/Kin//Time/Sonic is a Midnighter who began dabbling in the dark secrets of immortality sometime in the 1930s and is haunted by his conscience, and the Fortunata is an escaped product of mad Arachnos science cloned from Rularuu stock who has decided that Primal Earth belongs to her and it's therefore her job to maintain it. Two of the three characters (the midnighter and the cthulhubeast) are romantically attached, but I don't ERP and did not plan said attachments.
I'm on Virtue. -
Quote:This is not a completely true statement. Yes, NPC models are different geometries with different nodal hooks, but they are close enough that it does NOT necessitate re-creating costume parts from scratch, just modifying them to fit player geometries. Yes, it takes work, sometimes a lot of work: I speak from experience as a Morrowind modder, specifically one who makes clothing, armor, and accessories. Morrowind NPCs and players - and, because Morrowind modding is a tangled mess, sometimes even new player models by two different modders - suffer the same issue of different geometries, skeletons, etc. and I, along with many other modders, have converted one person's work to be compatible with another's without having to remake it from the ground up (for those to whom this statement makes sense, I've even gotten stuff for Smoother Bodies to work with Better Bodies without clipping, and boy was THAT not fun). It did not take months. It might, in particularly bad cases, take weeks, but not months. And I'm just one amateur, not a team of professionals.4. So why can't the male CoL be ported over to PCs? Because they physically can't. These are pieces originally made for NPCs and there is no way to 'port' them over. NPC pieces have different geometries and different nodal hooks. So, they would have to be re-created from scratch, which takes several months time.
-
And also the Wristbands, Tied, Bracers, Cloud Bracers, and Dragon Bracers, especially the female models because they don't go all the way back to the elbow, and all of the various skin-showing feet options like male Kung Fu and female Bridal Heels, Strappy, Sandals, and Slip-Ons?
Also: Can we get a version of the Blast pattern for male lower bodies' tights that shows skin in the ripped-out parts instead of having a secondary color? -
My "main" has switched a few times... first it was a grav/energy dominator on Triumph, then I moved to Virtue and made a sword/shield scrapper who became my main, then I joined a new supergroup and my widow became my main, then an alt who was in that supergroup got promoted and my widow had a plot-related disappearance and the alt, a grav/kin controller, became (and remains) the closest thing I have to a main character. He'll probably stay that way for a long time, due to IC officership and also I freely admit that I've become somewhat infatuated with him.

Quote:Sadders can you PLEASE hold off on the recruitment drive until we get our base rebuilt :PHere I was about to do a shameless plug, but I see Tyger beat me to it! *give Tyger cookies*
Anyway, everything people have stated so far is spot on. Virtue is generally considered to be one of the more RP-accessible servers, however some might argue that RP in general has dwindled over the last year or two.
There's still plenty to be had, though! I've always had the best luck joining a group. My group, the Codex, does a lot of forums stories and in-game events. There's plenty of active supergroups still out there and I'm sure many would love to have you. If you can afford to make the transition from Free to Premium (no monthly fee, still), I'd highly recommend it! -
I see this all the time. At least half of the supergroup I'm in does it, myself included ever since Time Manipulation came out and I didn't want to reroll my level 50 Grav/Kin who had a temporal theme. There's actually three of him now, all on Virtue: the original Grav/Kin controller Hour Thief, the Time/Sonic defender version Horoclept, and the Praetorian Grav/Energy dominator Tempo Rubato that I made when I jumped on the bandwagon of people in my SG making Praetorian counterparts to their main characters.
But yeah, let's see... one of our leaders has a katana/regen scrapper and a MA/regen scrapper who are the same person and also a ninja MM Praetorian version of her; the other leader has at least two of his... actually I don't know what Phaize is, but there are two of him; another officer has at least three of his mace/shield tank, one of which is a titan weapons brute and the other an archery/time corruptor; a couple non-officers made Titan Weapons versions of their characters when it came out too, without deleting the originals; two members made Kheldian-fused versions of their characters for story purposes... yeah, it's definitely a thing people do. -
-
I'm terrible with brutes. Seriously. I am the worst brute player. Hand me a brute and I will faceplant faster than if you hand me a blaster. I'm actually that bad.
I do have a wicked melee fortunata, though. -
I dunno, I think that in a superhero game there's a certain charm to having characters that look plastic and doll-like.
-
No, the Coming Storm is going to be Rularuu. Stormwatcher badge confirms it.
-
Okay, then the store's not working and it's lying, because I have zero tokens in my character items inbox.
-
I keep trying to buy them on the test server and it says I get one applied to my account, but I can't figure out how to actually use them... I have a hero that I was thinking about taking red temporarily for Soul Mastery, and an alignment change token would be majorly useful for trying that out, but where do I go to actually change my alignment?
Or si the store just not working, and it's lying to me when it says I have an alignment change token? -
-
Either one, really.
-
Currently it's "cross my fingers and hope." Naturally, this is insufficient. I've been fiddling around in Mids trying to come up with something that will survive alpha, but I've yet been unable to softcap even one kind of defense, so that's clearly not the route I ought to take.
I'm probably thinking about this totally wrong and there's some way of going about this by way of power usage and being good at playing controllers that I'm missing, too.
Basically, given these power sets and Teleportation as my travel power, how do I not die? -
I've been playing this game since shortly after the CoV launch.
About five minutes ago, I discovered the "Sell stack now" option while getting rid of a lot of common salvage, in stacks of 20-30.
My finger had been getting tired from all the click spamming... -
Quote:* Shouldn't anyone with the Time Manipulation power set get Entrusted with the Secret automatically?
No, not necessarily - my time manipulator only goes so far as to have plenty of the stuff, but doesn't have any ability to travel through it at any rate other than one second per second. It does, however, mean that countdown timers on missions ought to be much more ignorable than they are. -
Concept ALWAYS comes first for me... my Time/Sonic defender doesn't have Shout for the sole reason of its lacking a hands-emission-point customization option.
Also, the entire Gravity powerset. I have three characters with it. -
Both.
I have a Virtue server with three full pages of characters. Most of them are not above level 20.
