Sadly (and no offense intended), I found your expectations to be much more realistic here.
  2. I hate to keep sounding like "Gloomy Gus" here but...

If you assume that the devs have an interest in putting in the time and effort to integrate bases into the latest of CoH gameplay, then there are lots of things they "could" do to make this happen. Pages and pages have been written on this subject (even before we knew incarnates were coming into being).

But again, I find no evidence that assumption is true. In fact, I find the evidence to be quite the contrary. Decisions were made (I'm guessing for valid reasons, in the devs' mind at least) to exclude bases (SGs) from Praetoria, from side switching, and from the pursuit of incarnate activities while at the same time promoting in game alternatives to bases in the areas of travel, rezzing, teaming and crafting.

What conclusion can be drawn from this? That bases are considered an integral part of CoH and will evolve as the rest of the game evolves? If this is the case can you tell me who is on the job? Or is it closer to the truth that bases are considered poorly designed, not worth fixing and on their way to becoming obsolete?

Really? Do you have any evidence or results that supports this? To me it's more likely that there will always be some "next big thing" with mass appeal that has a higher priority.

You do know how many years it's been that people have begged for something as simple as a "blank" SG emblem? Right? That to me is about as easy as it gets and yet...

I mean nothing against you personally but at what point do you just say "I am going to stop calling out cause nobody is answering". [edit add: I'm at the point where "the shoe is on the other foot". Show me some results (any results) and I'll believe you even care].
  4. Not only are bases (and SGs for that matter) not a necessity; their utility is pretty much at an all time low. Here's my point: I believe this is by design... especially given what was done lately in game to promote base/sg travel, rez, teaming and crafting alternatives. At this point, the easiest "fix" would be to move the CoP outside of bases (a la what happened to the Silver Mantis SF redside...still another example of trend away from bases) place empowerment stations in Universities and just concede the point once and for all that bases are past their prime and not doing anything that cannot be done elsewhere (in most cases better).

However, I disagree with those who imply that things somehow "have" to be this way. I believe there are a number of "simple" things which could be done that would have wide in game appeal. I also feel that many of the base related complaints over multiple years are indeed justified (and you do not need to be an experienced programmer to see or understand that). However, these voices and complaints have been (purposely) overruled.

What we need (and do not have) is some greater influence "on the inside" to promote the "vision" of base/sg value. There is no single person responsible for the health and welfare of this aspect of the game. So we should not be surprised that there is likewise no responsibility to accomplish anything. My theory is the failure of the whole "All you bases are belong to us" (for those of you that remember that a few years back) largely shut the door on both base development and open dev/player communications on the subject. I wish I had been told that earlier... it would have saved me a couple of years of pleading and aggravation.

Will this door reopen with secret committees? More lists? Protests? I have my doubts. Despite some very well meaning efforts and intentions, the easier development path (the same path we've been on for quite some time) is one of benign neglect. I'd love to see some tangible results that prove me wrong on this score but I remain pessimistic.

The only ways I could see base building significantly upgraded:
    1. Personal hideouts/headquarters: everyone can build a base!
    2. Expanded gameplay functionality for VG/SG members' bases: reason for all members of a group to focus on their base, not just the builder
The first solves the limiting factor, bringing base building to every single player, irregardless of VG/SG status. This gets tricky, as it can't have too good of functionality, or else the reason for VG/SG bases dwindles. Also, It would have to have severely limited storage capacity, as more storage+more player hoarding, which reduces market supply/

The second is tricky, as it assumes VG/SG membership- something that devs won't do, so it can't be SO good that those without a VG/SG will feel cheated or left out. Also, what kind of VG/SG functionality? While some groups have the membership to fill many teams, others couldn't even fill one. This could be solved via the original silver mantis SF approach, allowing non-members to join in, but hits the faction hiccup where rogues/vigilantes are limited in access.

If the devs did BOTH, they don't devalue VG/SG bases, and they expand the game-time play options of all players, letting them tinker in the builder. The increased VG/SG base functionality helps those groups, and makes bases more important, while the personal bases satiates those without big groups they can access. Heck, personal bases could easily be an inf sink, something the game needs, and as an influence sink the reduced inf flow could counter the increase in supply should personal bases allow storage.

The problem here is that doing both would take more time, a lot of resources, and would be another 'big' release that they would not be assured would/could succeed in being a game-wide improvement embraced by their costumers as a whole.
FWIW I'm with you completely; been there a couple of years now. But the dag gum decorators union (errr correction... unions...looks like we have more than one now) has been the dominant voice in this section of the forum for awhile now . I'd add the possibity of a microtransaction to defray the costs of appeasing this minority; or maybe even underwriting the whole personal hideout/headquarters deal. That may be unpleasant for some but it could help define what is doable and when.
  6. I'd add: Elimination of base salvage (salvage conversion). Storage permissions. Revised base rent, plot and room pricing. Red star sg leadership designation. Return of CoP (w/o IoPs). And most of all, breakers for the beaker rack decorative item and a few other related cosmetic changes
  7. There is a huge difference between dev, GM, community rep, and forum Mod in terms of their roles. And there is a huge difference between contests and development in terms of results. I get the point that being noticed in one area (say community rep sponsored contests) might lead to getting noticed in another (say development) but the connection is not automatic.

My experience has been that the devs have been in "shock and awe" over base decoration for years... but that has not resulted in any base love for years either. Yellow titles may be nice for some and probably can't hurt; except that it could give the illusion that there must be behind the scences development on the way when there isn't.
  8. They say one definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result.

I can post a dozen or so earlier snippets where myself and others warned Turbo and the BBC about "lists" but that would have done nothing of a positive nature.

So here's where I am at this point. Do whatever you want BBC in public or in private; to me that doesn't matter. Priortize it as "the players input" however you want; again to me that no longer matters.

I have zero expectations for results. If, per chance , there are results (even if it is something I could care less about) I will be the first in line to congratulate you for a job well done.

I think I'm "that Stalker"... least I was. If you are really interested (if not skip this post), my complaint was probably based on many factors; many of which I freely admit were/are under my control (though I like to think unpleasant jerk isn't a factor). After my vg dwindled down to less than a loyal handful a year or so back (the rest left the game) I was content playing mostly alone helping out others mainly when asked. Then incarnates and the WST arose making teaming more necessary to do SFs/TFs to advance my alpha slot.

I play villains (my choice) on a low population server (my choice) at off peak times (my choice). During the week, 8 level 50 (one team) players not hidden can easily represent well over a third of the eligible people I can see to team with on the server to do the WST. I can tell you from direct observation that at first being a Stalker did not help matters. Being a painful introvert with a fear of rejection didn't help either (I like to stay hidden as a Stalker for a reason). I was discouraged and did say so on the forum.

I'm happy to say after a couple of weeks my situation has improved. I get a lot of repeat business. After doing this Stalker thing nigh on six years people realize I mostly know what I'm doing. Not being an unpleasant jerk does help too. Still not much of an "assemble the team" type though I admit. [edit add: also want to thank those who posted they would be willing to take me on their team].

Anyway, I do not know how many people are/were in the same boat as me. I also don't know how many people are still going to pick any other AT (including Scrapper) over Stalker to team with no matter what. But you are right, a Stalker can overcome it.

Ummm, I was wondering.. when you say the "quality is low" are you referring to drama and perhaps langauage sometimes that will make a sailor blush? I've avoided these channels in the past for those reasons. These days with the emphasis on incarnates, WST, etc. I feel at at a disadvantange not belonging to one of these channels. 12. It's clear to me you have put a lot of thought into this and that you have excellent organizational skills. I agree with over 90% of your ideas and I would be thrilled if even 50% were ever implemented.

One thing I keep hearing about is a possible AE-Base building connection. I must admit that I don't really see AE mission maps and bases as a symbiotic fit. It always seemed to me these are "stovepipe" game features have little in common. But I'll concede that could be shortsightedness on my part.

I'm glad to see somebody telling it like it is. I'm a 69+ month vet on day two of a search on a lower population server to get someone to take a Stalker for a LRSF. Despite having shivans, nukes, and even vengeance (which you figure would help if it wasn't a Mo run) the closest I've gotten to even making an attempt is multiple "Sorry we are full." The ignored yellow flagged team search comments and broadcast requests are starting to become demeaning. Even if/when I get on, it's fingers crossed hoping everyone will stay on the team and that it isn't a bust.

I'll be so glad when I can finally put this artificial forced play requirement behind me.

  15. Whenever this comes up I've always been pro personal living quarters. Lots of potential here to get everyone who plays the game involved in the creative process of building if they so choose.

Lately, I've had some pretty strange ideas... brought on by how we would mix a new base building system with what we already have. I've been pretty reluctant to share these ideas because they are still largely half-baked and probably have more holes than Swiss cheese. But what the heck. We are all friends here on the Internet right (heh)? What if...

The existing base building system became the secret lair/personal base system for everyone. I'm picturing a tech or arcane 'vator in a base or designated apartment building in the game (for those not in an SG) that will whisk you to your own personal space. Everybody earns prestige (in an SG or no). Based on that prestige level, you build under the current system. The ground rules are: (1) This personal system has "limited" in game relevance (where "limited" is to be determined... storage yes/no... TPs yes/no... etc.) (2) The personal base (existing) system has limited capabilities (no xyz for example... basically what we have now with possibly more housing related decorating items).

All the bases out there today become the Secret Lair/ Personal Base of the SG leader accessible by who he/she designates (SG/coalition) through the base 'vator. Stuff not allowed in a personal area (say the CoP trial for example) would be movable into a new base system.

Bases become these new (SG based) super duper complexes designed from the ground up to be able to grow to be large, impressive and useful. The mission computer hums, optional SG activities are available, all in game conveniences (auction house, tailor, trainer, etc.) reside, porters go everywhere (even for Rogues and Vigilantes) and there would be lots of other stuff that I haven't even considered.

:Sigh:... that would be nice. But I do concede the need to maintain two "base" systems (one built from the ground up ) might be more development and maintenance than our dev team might be willing to undertake... especially given our track record so far in this regard. Can you tell I spend entirely too much time thinking about this stuff?
  16. Would there be some issues to resolve to go to a new base building system? Sure. Will we all agree on the "best" method to resolve these issues? Since we don't all agree that even going to a new system is a good idea I feel on pretty safe ground saying the answer to that one is no.

Still, I too am rather (pleasantly) surprised and encouraged by the willingness of many to buy off on a near worst case scenario to go to something better. When somebody like a Stacker sez "bring in the wrecking ball" I sit up and take notice. Maybe the paradigm that we must tack on to what we have architecturally at all costs isn't as strong overall as some people are making it out to be. [Stuff in storage is quite another matter, to the point where I agree it could be a showstopper in going to a new system without a transfer mechanism].

Maybe there's at least some recognition (on both the dev and the player side) that we've rode this tried horse of a base building system as long and as hard as we could (not to mention used it in ways that were neither envisioned nor intended). Now it's time for something better. If that is the case, I'm confident that we could, should, and would move to something that isn't worst case in its implementation. You are never going to please everyone and Impish Kat's questions plus more are valid. But I find the prospect of a new base system exciting to think about and my respect for some of our hardest core base designers who are willing to take this plunge even if it meant a complete teardown/rebuild has never been higher.

    This isn't.

More specifically, I'd prefer a new system with current bases going the way of base salvage (you can still keep what you have..."frozen" perhaps... for "museum" purposes but no new creations). Edit add: But if tear down/start over is the only option, so be it.

Of course if you know me you know I keep hoping we go more in the other direction (make more things that do something rather than make the things that do something now do nothing).

Still, I have to admit IoPs are a great looking shiny. It would be wonderful to have a reasonable way to obtain them, even if it was for looks alone. Glad you brought it up again OP.

I find this ironic, the little patience part that is. I'll accept the word-game label if it was directed at my questions and helps make you feel better. But, at the risk of raising your anger even more please consider:

You take some of nicest, most helpful, and friendliest people in the game (yours truly excluded). They try for years to take what they think is a good thing and attempt to get someone to make it better. On a rare occasion you win; but only if what you ask for takes minimal effort (go into a program and lower pricing numbers or remove pathing restrictions).

Most times you lose. When I say lose I mean "worse than ignored". Capabilties you once had (base storage, raids, multi SG leadership, unique SG activities, unique SG rewards ) are gone. You watch as the rest of the game passes you by (the latest being Praetoria and side switching... which is why I keep bringing it up). You study trends and find that the things that make what you once treasured as "special" are not so "special" any more (great post Celica). You watch it morph away from the needs of "the group" and toward the tastes of "the individual"

Then you look to the future. That's where you get a good dose of development "priorities","bang for development buck" and how hard a fix is to achieve. Then, at least in my case, the time comes when you are faced with: "Is it all even worth asking for?"

ZM I have mounds of respect for you and what you have done for this community. Forgive the word-games. But words are all I have. And I've used just about every one I can think of to make the above points time and again and request fixes without success.

I wish I had your confidence that "Of course bases aren't obsolete." I wish I could say that bases (and especially supergroups) overall were flourishing and expectations are high for a bright future. I hope they won't turn into just individual storage units or a means of artistic expression. But behind a decorative facade things overall aren't going so well and haven't been for years. Maybe we should just accept that "what we have is all there is" as Redlynne suggests. At this point, stopping all the "erosion" we have suffered (if that is even possible) may be the best we can hope for for bases.

    And with that, I'm out.

Your sg mates don't have to use bases to do any of this. When you consider that in some cases they flat out can't (while they are Praetorians or switch sides) and in other cases bases are not even the "best" way to do these things anymore you get an idea of why people begin to rethink the utility of bases.

That doesn't make bases "useless" (and I at least did not say they were... yet). But, I'm afraid the decline of the need for bases is far from rubbish and boils down to empowerment stations and the CoP trial (which cannot be found elsewhere... yet) and limited situational convenience. Is that enough justification to rebuild a kludge of a design from the ground up? How about making development of lots new stuff for bases a high priority? Or even sustain the viability of bases in the long run?
  23. If empowerment buffs and "hopping distance" crafting is the "glue" holding bases together, in the future bases are in trouble. Certainly the devs did not view such features as showstoppers when they created Praetoria or allowed side switching (with a loss of SG affiliation). There are no signs that bases will hold any more importance with incarnates or anything else made public planned for the game.
  24. Bases are not completely obsolete yet. However, they are on the verge of becoming decorative relics of the past. While the game itself evolves to provide more fun and functional options for the average player independent of bases (better travel, side switching, merged markets, glee mail, new zones, etc.)...bases stagnate.

As evidenced by the sheer number and types of posts in this very forum, today bases are primarily opulent monuments developed by a minority of the player base under a class system (those with resources/base editing privileges and those without).

Like it or not, there is a strong link between the plight of bases and the plight of SGs/VGs. Lower ranking SG/VG members continue to get less real value from their hard earned prestige under the SG/VG umbrella. This in turn makes striking out on one's own independent of any SG/VG affiliation a more viable alternative. Thus the fabric of SG/VG membership slowly erodes away... and so does the value of bases.

While the devs could take action to reverse the above trends they have so far elected not to do so. If anything, the devs have chosen to follow an "SG unfriendly" agenda (reduce SG specific activities, eliminate SGs from the latest zones, prevent cross factional SGs, etc.). New fun and functional features for bases themselves have not fared any better over the past couple of years.

While the devs may, from time to time, express feelings like "it's a shame they haven't been able to do more" the truth is no one has yet stepped forward publicly for years with any concrete plan or timetable to make this situation any better. So, lacking any other evidence to the contrary, I expect all of the above trends to continue... making bases in the end...obsolete (edit add: but often quite gaudy should you have an appreciation for the value of the "artistic" aspect of things).
  25. There are many inf based "solutions" to this that will work in principle. They range from the perfectly legit (play the market) through the "shady" (pad your sg to the max for at least some of it) to the down right illegal (I won't go there). Out of all of them my guess is Seebs' is the "best" from a time/efficency standpoint... go to somebody who is "loaded" and beg for it.

Is that really the point as suggested by OP and others?

Put me firmly in the camp for the "perfect and easy" system improvement of allowing more attachments and save the market advice for another place.
