Quote:Well, on my katana/regen, I went for S/L defense and some small +hp. Trying to get any decent resistance values out of set bonuses is akin to hauling water uphill with a sieve. I didn't bother with much for recovery because I have it out the wazoo. The way I look at it is that I have tons of regen; adding some defense from IO bonuses is going to help Divine Avalanche keep me alive. If it was possible to add a decent amount of resistance to my regen scrapper with sets, I would probably do that instead to smooth out the incoming damage curve.I was wondering about people's approach to set bonuses. In your experiences, is it your goal to use set bonuses to enhance strenghts you already have or to make up for abilities lacking in your AT/Powerset? For example, I've started a */Regeneration Scrapper and I'm looking ahead to set inventions. Is it overkill to slot all the +Regen, +Heal, +Recovery I can fit or maybe consider defense/resistance?
Thanks.
In general it depends on the powersets. With defense sets I get defense to boost strengths, because the closer you get to the softcap the more valuable defense becomes. On mixed sets like WP or Inv I go for defense to cover holes and boost strengths, because layering defensive abilities (defense, resistance, regen) is where it's at. I don't have much experience with resistance sets like Fire/Electrical/Dark Armor but I suspect I would try for some defense there too.
I guess I just try to build for defense, on my melee characters at leastOn my blasters I have tried ranged defense but usually just fall back to +rech and whatever else happens to come along. Honestly I find that I concern myself with set bonuses mainly on my melee characters, because they can get so much benefit.

Can't speak for freedom but Virtue is well populated and I never have a problem forming teams for any content at all. If you come to Virtue PM me for a list of resources that will help you out!
edit: PK is right as usual but the OP asked for the most populated servers so it's sort of disingenuous to try to direct them to the lower population servers in an effort to make them higher population servers. -
What powers require a hit roll to buff someone's to-hit?
edit Ah ha! Follow Up and Blinding Feint! Apparently my memory isn't great in the morning.
If there are powers other than those two, I can't think of them. However, for Accurate Healing there are lots, such as Siphon Life, Life Drain, Transfusion, Twilight Grasp, Dark Regeneration, et cetera. For accurate tohit debuffs, there are the entire dark melee and dark blast sets, among others. So, there's really a lot more possibilities for those IO sets. -
Quote:Care to elaborate? I've seen DA do things that made my head spin.I'd say DA is the most under used secondary for brutes, mainly because it "cant" do what the other secondaries are able to do.
edit: forgot to answer the OP! I would also say that DA is the least played set I see because it has an undeserved bad rep, not because it underperforms. -
Quote:This right here is exactly correct. Vigilance is garbage and this is why. Just about anything would be better; a sliding scale where when nobody is hurt the defender gets a damage bonus and when the team is hurting the defender gets a +special bonus (+def, +resist, +heal, whatever your primary happens to do, you do it better) would be neat. The OP's idea would be cool too. Anything is better than what we do have.A defender on the other hand needs to be on a huge team and fail miserably at their intended team role for maximum benefit?!?!?!?! That's totally messed up.
Having said that I love my defenders and as far as Vigilance goes, I just assume it doesn't exist and plan accordingly. I just wish that my favourite AT had a decent inherent.
edit:
Oh, how I wish. -
Yeah I was looking at adding some defense but it seems like a hard road to go down to get decent numbers. I'm wondering if I should go for S/L defense via reactive armors and kinetic combats, stack tough and weave in there, see what else I can find? Positional defense doesn't look to be that easy to come by with these sets. Also Kinetic Combats are pricey, ugh.
The other option is to build for recharge bonuses but like Tweeks says claws doesn't need that much +rech to be awesome and I am wondering if it's really worth it to aim for recharge when only two powers are really gonna get mileage from it.
Are sapping builds decent even if your primary isn't electrical melee? Does Lightning Field take up the slack that Power Sink leaves? -
What do I do with this set? I have never played a resistance set; I have always gone for defense. I checked the guides on the sticky but one is for i7 and doesn't address Energize, and the other one is some zany perma-Power Surge build. Do I try to build for recharge to leverage Energize and Power Sink (for sapping)? Do I try to eke out some meager defense? My primary is Claws so there's not a lot of mitigation there. Well, I could pick up Shockwave for some knockback. What's the consensus? I don't have a build designed at all, I am only in the mid twenties at the moment. Sure feels squishy. Does it improve? How do I make it better? I'm not willing to make some five billion inf build, but I am willing to spend a few hundred million and/or some merits on it. I really want to love this set.

Plant/storm has ruined me for any other controller powersets. It's just too good. I always have that one more trick up my sleeve to pull my butt out of the fire.

What if you could obtain a recipe and craft it at any level below the level of the recipe, within the recipe's range? Note: I haven't thought this through in the least, just what popped into my head reading the OP.

Hey and welcome! Just thought I would mention some of Virtue's wonderful channels dedicated to teaming, badging and taskforces (and one that is pretty much pure shenanigans most of the time).
Virtue LFG Alpha: This channel is your go-to, LFT or LFM channel. Advertise anything you want in here. Mission teams, task or strike forces, if it's teamed it's welcome here.
Virtue TFs: Surprisingly enough, a channel dedicated to task and strike forces
Virtuebadges09: If it awards a badge, this is the place. Mainly used for task/strike forces, but also general badging, with some chatter tossed in.
VU2010: Virtue Unlimited's latest incarnation. General tomfoolery, chitchat, and the odd heated argument, but good people all round. Also good for finding decent teammates.
Once again glad to have you here and I hope you enjoy your time! -

Don't happen to have an ATI graphics card in there, either onboard (is there such a thing?) or as a second card? NVIDIA disables PhysX now if you have an ATI card in your system.

Quote:Not great. Consider spending a little more cash and getting ahold of something more current if you can. Radeon 5770 are good, I hear, and so are the Geforce 260 cards. Should be able to rustle something up for under $200. Looking at your other thread the video card is definitely the weakest link.Does anyone have any info on this card?
As it's in my Pc im getting tomorrow and dont know its full capabilities, I have seen several mixed reviews online
Thanks -
Quote:It's a little fob thing, you don't need to plug it into your PC but when you log in you must press the button on the fob and it generates a number. You enter the number and you are in. You can't access your account settings or log into the game without it. Works a treat. If you lose it you have to phone in and get things sorted but that's not a big deal I think. Supposedly it will last for a decade without batteries dying or whatever.Wow has some sort of account security service where they mail you something for your computer. I believe it plugs into the usb and generates a number or something to use whenever you login.
I really wish ncsoft offered this service because you'd never have to worry about being hacked ever again. Once you setup your account it is REQUIRED to have that device just to login.
Maybe I understood it incorrectly but I was told wow had that. Any wow players want to shed some light? -
The solution is to put each channel in its own tab and then when Virtue TFs starts looking like VU2010, you click another tab. As long as the mods are OK with the level of chatter and conversation, that's pretty much the only solution.
As far as my opinion, the chatter never bothers me. Sometimes I groan at terrible jokes or frown when someone is especially stupid but that's about it. I honestly have not seen that much conversation in channels other than VU. Brief outbursts sure but it's not like the channel is constantly inundated with talk of how drunk @Whoever got last weekend.
I actually find it far more annoying when the channel is silent except for one putz who sends the same "looking for ITF/LGTF" message once a minute for ten minutes. Or the worst thing of all: "anything goin on?" Yes, doubtlessly numerous things are going on, but it's not likely that someone's MoLRSF was waiting on one last lazy sod to log in and ask after it.
Oh, that turned into a bit of a rant. Sorry OP. So yes, rough luck that the way the channels are used is a bother to you, but it's easy to fix by changing tabs. Monitoring the channel constantly isn't necessary. If you want to do something in the game, form the team and forge ahead! Much faster than waiting for someone to form up or asking for someone else to form it for you. Not that the OP has this issue, just a pet peeve of mine -
Quote:Nope! I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit edition and the only problem I have had with it is that it is too good, making my work PC seem lame
Am I the only Windows 7 users who has not had any sort of compatibility issues with any software that I ran just fine with Vista, including CoH? -
Quote:Thank you! This is a very clear way of saying it
Now I get my defense to 40%. I can adjust my difficulty so that there are 100 incoming attacks, with 10 hitting. Pretty impressive: the rooms are now full of spawns 5 times bigger than I could handle with no defense! I am uber!
But now I manage to move to 45% defense. Does that give me a small incremental edge? No, I can literally double the incoming aggro compared to what I could handle at 40%, because at 45% the damage I took fell by half compared to damage taken at 40%. Since only 5 attacks will hit out of 100 but I know I can survive 10, I can adjust my settings such that there are 200 incoming attacks and get back to 10 landing for damage. That last 5% defense cuts your incoming damage in half, which is what I meant by doubling your survivability when I made my (apparently badly worded) post.

Quote:64 bits has nothing to do with your problem, apparently the game has some flickering/graphics issues with ATI cards for some reason. I have run CoX on 64 bit OS for the last two+ years with nary a problem that could be blamed on the OS.I just updated my XFX Radeon 4350 HD card to the Windows 7 64 bit driver because the sun wasn't shining in the game world. I could see the sun was now shining, but it would keep flashing the 'Loading' page from after the CoH Updater.
I wonder if CoH is 64 bit ready. -
Quote:Oh that sucks, so my big radeon idea might not be that great until these fixes you mentioned are in the game for realah.
No. the graphical glitches with water and the Depth of Field are part of the underlying problem, but there are additional glitches that occur if you turn on Depth of Field and Water regardless of whether or not you try to run AA. -
Quote:Yeah that post doesn't say what the issue is or whether turning off AA fixes it but thanks!... see post #15 in this thread : http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...8&postcount=15

So this is quite the thread and I am not a technical kind of dude. I too am interested in upgrading my video card. I am looking at a Radeon 5770, but a friend tells me that ATI has problems in CoX because of openGL or something. I don't know what any of that means, so I am just gonna ask: are the Radeon cards a safe bet for CoX? I assume they will be OK with GR too, if they are OK with the current game.
edit: ok so there is an antialiasing problem? If I don't use AA is everything cool? -
Quote:Sure it is. Let me show you using your numbers. It's not exponential, and no, the last 5% is not really as good as the first 25%.
Quote:10 critters attacking doing 100 pts per attack, with no defense, 500 dmg avg per "round."
The same with 25% defense, 250 dmg avg per "round," saving you 250 dmg/round over 0 defense.
Quote:With 40% defense, 100 dmg avg per "round."
With 45% defense, 50 dmg avg per "round," saving you 50 dmg/round over 40% defense.
