    games within games.

chess and backgammon are great ideas. play vs another player, or the AI.

of course risk vs reward would be a factor. but that would be a discussion for another thread.

    Uh, no.
I want dev time put into building CoH, not inventing diversions from the game.

If you like backgammon or chess or poker or whatever, hit Yahoo Games. Heck, you could play CoH in a window and play Yahoo Checkers in a browser.

    [/ QUOTE ]

these things would build CoX. maybe chess and backgammon are bad ideas.

what about the monkey fight club? place a wager, if your monkey wins. you get an appropriate reward. or a shooting range. you pay for the target(s) and depending on your performance you could get a common IO recipe, or a SO, or a piece of common salvage.

    play Grim Fandango?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    no.

    [ QUOTE ]
because that kind of thing just doesn't work in the MMO environment. This isn't the genre to indulge your love of puzzles or mysteries or clever solutions.

    [/ QUOTE ]

because you think the players wont go for it? why?

everything negative that's currently been stated in this thread should be used as examples of what not to do.

do you have a suggestion nether, of something that could potentially work? given your experience you might have some helpful insight.

You're talking mini games within the game. Like you find within Pokemon or Final Fantasy. UO even has them. The chessboards and backgammon boards aren't just decoration, they work like everything else in the game.

I don't have any inherent problems with it. I don't even have any problems with "puzzle" games. Fulmens had a point, but it's not quite the same. The "puzzles" were always something in the way of the mission objective. That's different from the objective being the puzzle itself. Though I do agree that anything static will be posted on the internet within hours.

No. CoV is the name of the first paid expansion. The game has always been City of Heroes.

this thread wasn't meant to be an indictment, or a troll post. it was a thread intended to make a suggestion or two as to alternatives to the limited system we have now. options, immersion and a parity to real life are parameters that i was trying to adhear to.

i could speculate as to what a lot of "problems" are too. especially the seemingly sole intent of a lot of CoX forum posters to perpetually dwell on the negative. but that serves no decernable purpose in moving the game forward.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I didn't say you were trolling, I merely explained that the reason some players are experiencing shortages is because of their preferred playstyle.

The "limitations" are not real. Even casual players have no problems aquiring whatever they want with just the slightest bit of effort.

Influence can be made hand over fist by selling drops that are aquired from regular missions.

Merits can be traded in for recipes that net millions.

AE tickets can also be traded in for salvage and recipes that net millions.

For those that prefer a farming playstyle the rewards can be earned even faster.

The only thing your idea would accomplish is to make it even easier for RMT sites to aquire things for them to sell to players.

So again I respectully say to you, HELL NO!

    [/ QUOTE ]

you have not added one constructive thing to this thread so far. just several more reasons that reinforce what i'm saying in my OP.

answer these questions: why do these things have to be the only option to obtain reward?

what would you suggest as an alternative to what we currently have? (see any of my other posts in this thread for reference)

this is not about rmt sites. this is not about the percieved failings of the player base.

to reiterate, this is about options and immersion.

...why would I want to not kill things in this game?

    [/ QUOTE ]

the real question is: why does that have to be the only way to play?

take the ski chalet. fun, popular and different . of course if that were the only option, it to would get old real fast.

what else could be introduced to break the grind? a ferris wheel? a shooting gallery? a dunking booth?
  6. [ QUOTE ]
    I misunderstood, then.

I'd divide into three categories: Things that give XP, things that give non-XP rewards, and things that don't necessarily give XP, or rewards, but are fun anyway.

The pinball machines in Pocket D could be fun ,and if you set them up so other people can watch but not play until the game is over... keep track of high scores... may not be worth the dev-hours, but it could be fun.

Like how Hamidon Enhancements intended to buff self movement can also be used to enhance foe -movement powers, grinding for XP falls into the category of "by design." There are only two real options here: 1) Remove any substance from the game and let people get all the XP they want without grinding; 2) Leave it as it is, trying to make grinding more interesting.

To avoid the grind altogether, a name needs to be built from the ground up without being based on the idea of experience points. City of Heroes is not such a game.

    [/ QUOTE ]

maybe i should have been clearer. no critters or experience need be involved. only infamy/influence, all origin enhancements, recipies, salvage, badges and costume pieces. in other words: rewards. i'm not talking about points A and points B. i'm talking about the stuff in between. i'm talking about rewards.

this could also aleviate some of the supply vs demand issues that a lot of people are experiencing currently too.

the Architect Entertainment system does seem to give a lot of people what they want: travel six feet and have your critters served to you on a plate.

this is exactly what i was trying to "discuss alternatives" to. take critters out of the equation all together.

    [ QUOTE ]

I hope someone has a good idea... but I don't.

    [/ QUOTE ]

not one other thing i mentioned in the OP was a good idea?
  10. [ QUOTE ]
Wow. First reply and I'm going negative already...

There are a [very few] things that count as "puzzles" in this game. You can tell because players have been consistently and extensively complaining about them, and avoiding them, for five years straight. Ever get lost in the Perez maze? Ever look for a mission door that was "under the map?" Ever try to find your way to the center of the Abandoned Sewers?

... oh yeah. The playerbase treated those problems like bugs and developed workarounds.

Same with buying "power 10" enhancements. Same with unlockable stores. Same with missions where you had to travel to the end of a hazard zone, then travel through ANOTHER hazard zone (the old Rikti Crash Site). Same with talk-tos, patrol missions, tricky hunts. In fact, while this may sound bitter, the Architect Entertainment system does seem to give a lot of people what they want: travel six feet and have your critters served to you on a plate.

Matt Miller said something once to the effect of "Ten minutes after a puzzle is introduced into an MMO, there's a walkthrough on the web." It's very true.

I hope someone has a good idea... but I don't.

    [/ QUOTE ]

great, no puzzles. what about the other ideas?

besides. everything you mentioned are examples of things that were either A: poorly implemented or B: just lame. also, those things are examples of things not ot repeat in the future. no?
  11. so far, we have limited options as to obtain rewards. most of them involve killing. mission types are severly limited as well. i know it has prolly been mentioned before, but why not have a thread to "seed" the devs for future issues.

i would like to suggest games of chance. i know it's been mentioned before (and not only by me i'm sure). but what a welcomed relief it would be from the get mission, kill, get mission, kill, return to contact, get mission, kill, grind of daily CoX life.

how awesome would st. martial and pocket d be with slots, card games, roulette, the monkey fight club, races, puzzles, brain teasers, and riddles? it could also be another type of pvp, with card games like poker or blackjack (maybe this will be to exploitable?) with a relativly random element such as the dealer being AI and cards being generated randomly. really, you could walk into pocket d with a hero or a villain. buy chips to play with, then cash out before zoning back to your respective side.

side note: maybe this will be a good time to also implement a global/game account bank/storage and an infamy to influence, and vice/versa, exchange.

things like the ski chalet open all year around would also be a welcome break. you could have a course for every travel power. a type of get the flag thing. there could be tri-athalons and coresponding badges and such to match.

these are just a couple ideas that come to my immediate attention. i'm sure there's more. anyone else have something constructive they'd like to add?
  12. [ QUOTE ]
When i16 goes live, what character are you going to immediately go to, or create, to change the colors of all their powers?

The clown blaster that will now have a full rainbow of different colored blasts?

The ice armor that is now a white crystal armor?

Dark blast to become an evil red hellflame blast?

As for me, I don't know if I'll change them, but I will definately check out all the different animations for my level 50 MA scrapper. Don't know if I'll change them, as I like the kicks, but I'll definately check them out.

    [/ QUOTE ]

every character i have with hasten and superspeed is going to get hasten and superspeed dimmed to near invisibility. love the powers, hate the graphics.
  13. [ QUOTE ]
You know I really never had much faith in MA. User created content in an MMO was never something that I thought would work.

The limits of not being able to import any resources and having to confine yourself to everything that's in the game already pretty much killed a lot of my enthusiasm.

Still...misgivings aside, I decided that before I condemn it, I'd give it a solid try. So I made an arc. A pretty decent arc(IMO) that's story driven and solo friendly(pretty much).

Got it working and found the perfect end map to use. I was moderately proud of it. Then patch after patch kept breaking my arc.

The first and harshest blow was the removal of the Paragon Protector Clone lab map. So then after getting a tell that my arc wasn't working I had to chose a stupid generic map that didn't have the room at the end with the clone lab which I had thought was pretty cool.

After the last patch I again get a tell that my arc is invalid. I'm pretty confused because I can't for the life of me think why it would be invalid. Turns out they have now pulled the power generators that you get in some Council maps and in the Marshall Brass/Aeon arc(the ones powering the WSPDR building. They can no longer be used as destructible objects.

It's bad enough that we can't import external resources to flesh out our arcs...why are they continually killing the stuff that we had access to? What's next? It's frustrating as hell that I've spent a good amount of time trying to make at least one decent story in MA and it get's more and more gutted with each passing patch. I give up!

    [/ QUOTE ]

one map, one enemy group. that's all MA should be. that way no one will ever be able to exploit/break it. then everyone can have an equal and balanced gaming experience.

    Does AE need XP?

i think we should take it out back and beat it to death with a muddy garden hose.........

what i dislike about ma is that it is the "grind", only magnified. i don't think changing the reward itself is the answer.

i mean, what are the current options for mission completions? kidnaps/rescues, find the box/item/glowie, defeat so-n-so and a couple of defend this or thats and destroy this or thats (i know i'm probally missing something). if i'm not mistaken, those are the only things to do to gain rewards.

what if there were games of chance, card games, puzzles, riddles and contests that involved anything other than kill, kill, kill?? like the ski chalet, only all the time. there could be physical contests and actual gambling in pocket d and st. martial.

i mean, what if you had to fight all the way through a mission. and once you get to the end you find a boss that has a bomb strapped to himself. he says somethin like " give me one good reason why i shouldn't flip this switch and take all of you with me", and then you have to give him a reason. maybe a multiple choice answer, or a series of answers. or maybe you're just a turd and want to kill everyone so you let him do it. hell, i dunno.

maybe there could be a seperate componate to the game like reputation. a reputation that you did not have any direct controll over. like the old star wars games where depending on what you did through out your career you moved further into the light or slipped down into the darkside. and it affected how the game responded/reacted to your toon. really, the possibilities are endless.

MA isn't a bad idea, it has just been poorly executed up to this point (imo anyways).

so how bout it devs? when are we actually gonna be able to place some bets at the monkey fight club? oh, and while i'm shamelessly begging, how about a influence to infamy bank in pocket d? ehh? ehh? you know you want to matt

Most likely, you'll only be able to change the color of powers, not remove the effects. However, if the color tinting blends in the same way as the Auras do, setting the color to Black will make it nearly invisible.

    [ QUOTE ]
5% chance for 5 seconds is just too weak. If it weren't Unique, it might be a different story. But as a Unique, it's a waste of a slot. Unless you want the set bonus which 6-slotting provides, that is the only condition under which you should ever slot this thing.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Really? I guess the hundreds of Claws Scrappers who have recommending slotting it into Follow Up, including myself, are just doing it wrong. Cause a power I spam as an attack that gives me +damage/+tohit randomly giving me more +tohit/+damage is a bad thing.

I also have them slotted into Aim on most of my toons with access to Aim so sometimes it turns into Aim+BU. But again I guess wanting more damage and tohit when I am actually using a power for that specific reason is useless.

Giving someone advice and stating the only exception to the rule is your exception, is bad advice.

You do realize that 5% chance is the base chance Scrapper attacks have to crit right? I was amazed the other day when I was fighting a Roman Boss in the ITF and I had 5 crits in a row on my DM/SR. That was rolling that little 5% chance 5 times in a row. I have had this proc go off in Aim twice in a row and cant count how often I see another 100% damage boost. 5 seconds lets me get off 3 attacks on most every toon I have besides my Energy Melee and even then I would gladly take the added damage of 4 reds for my Energy Transfer or Total Focus any day of the week. It only cost 1 slot and fires off often if you put it into something you use often.

    [/ QUOTE ]

i thought all this was a no-brainer. i try to fit this into any power that has a "fast" recharge, thus increasing your chances of it firing. kinda like the 2 entropic chaos procs i have in a perma dom. that 51 hp adds up man.
  19. so, today, my sg mate rolled 2 lotg7.5s one right after the other. and the other day another sg mate rolled a miracle +recovery and a lotg7.5. not one right after the other but within a short amount of time. so being the bitter person i normally am procede to complain about how i never get luck like that with random rolls. now, i'm not exagerating at all. but for the life of my time in this game, i have only ever recieved 1 lotg7.5 from a random roll. never have i recieved a numina proc or anything of real high relative value from a random roll, other than the previously stated of course. normally what i get is malaises illusions, devestation triples, ghost widow embraces, siphone insights (got 2 today )..... stuff like that.

when i do RSFs, i swear, 9 times out of 10 i get centrioles, or nucleos and microfiliments. almost never do i get the stuff that is in high demand like ribosomes, membranes and peroxsomes.

so my sg mate says to me, "maybe it's your firewall"...........

to which my reply was "no way. that does not happen. tell me you are kiddin, blah blah blah"....

so my questions are: is it true? will my firewall prevent me from recieving certain drops? and, if so, how can one remedy this?

any feedback on this would be so very much apprieciated.

    Subjective Feedback
I would like to see a chance to earn these enhancements upon being defeated by another player (Say about half the chance of getting one if you defeat another player). It would encourage a mentality of "It doesn't matter if you win and lose, as long as you play the game". It would encourage players who are new to the system ("Oh geez I got my butt kicked but I got this great enhacnement that dropped so now I can slot this and do better next time!") and generally encourage people to finish fights to the bitter end instead of the hit and run tactics.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is actually a really good idea. You might even increase participation in PvP with something like this.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I also agree, it's an excellent idea.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's a wonderful idea that could work effectively and also encourage fights, duels and PvP matches to be carried out even if the end is rather nasty.

Plus it'll bring in even more of a crowd.

    [/ QUOTE ]

this is a good idea, but........

it will never happen. and if it does, i want a chance to get some type of drop/reward when i die in a pve instance too. heck, while we're at it, i think we should get a chance at a pvp IO just for zoning into a pvp instance.

Yeah, as I posted in the patch discussion thread, Martial Arts Shuriken is actually it's strongest attack. A shuriken should not be doing more damage than all melee attacks on a melee-centric mob, especially moreso than their tier 9, three second animating, slow-motion kick to the head move ( I forgot the name... ).

Being able to choose which ranged attack would also be nice.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Considering most "adjustments" in this game seem to be done with a barrage of sledgehammers when the fine tuning of a single screwdriver would actually make sense, is anyone surprised by any of this? I mean, seriously, did you think they wouldn't go total overkill on some of this stuff?

    [/ QUOTE ]

yeah, typical heavy hand by the devs. seems funny how quick they are to nerf something, especially considering all the bugs that have been persisting since i12.......
  22. [ QUOTE ]

The general problem is that there are very few tools for a SG leader to actually use to help them lead. This problem is highlighted by this issues focus on supreme leadership.

    [/ QUOTE ]

i completly agree with this. more tools to help leaders flesh out thier rolls is always a plus....... <---subjective
  23. subjective: why even have the mezz effect reduction in any of these sets???????? in 90% of pvp instances mezz/status/hold effects are already supressed to near worthlessness. i like the way you guys are thinking but, there really is no point in adding mezz/status/hold protection in any new pvp-centric IO sets.

    Sync Issues?

    [ QUOTE ]
    Hi Everyone,

We are still seeing a few reports of players becoming out of sync (ghost maps, ‘the door bug’, ‘out of body experience’) with the servers.

Please post here if you are still having problems.

    [/ QUOTE ]

yes, like crazy. every character across 2 accounts. everytime i zone in and out of every map and misison. sometimes it's so bad that i have to type /sync 3-4 times before i can get 10' away from the door/entrance. might i also add that it is terribly, incredibly, awefully and incestantly annoying. did i happen to mention that it's ANNOYING too. and oh, by the way, it's REALLY, REALLY ANNOYING!!! i'm not trying to be a turd here, but i'm kinda annoyed by this bug, just a lil' bit , annoyed...... by this annoying bug.

and it's been getting increasingly worse since the launch of issue "annoying bugs galore" 13. i appreciate all the work and dedication you wonderful and doting developers have given me these 2 glorious years, but COME ON MAN! can we please, please, please, please, please, please, please take just one issue and fix all the current bugs that have been plaguing your dedicated and paying custumers? especially before you introduce another whole system into our world with all the accompanying and wonderfully annoying bugs that it's going to have. please?

    sincerly,
    just another $30.00 a month.
