~ Hey do you have kids? Want them returned alive? ha ha! I am a villain after all!
~ What do you guys think of changing the term 'Arrested' to 'MURDERED!', like in cold blood.
~ Two words. Game Reset.
~ I'm just here for the Day Job accolade.
~ No job is worth compromising my lofty ideals. Unless there's free stuff.
~ I bring sweeping changes. I am the harbinger of DOOM! -
What has two thumbs and causes team wipes?
< < THIS GUY! -
I seem to remember there being some less tedious way of doing this besides pen and paper. My current badge situation is all bshnebin... I have tons and tons of them and no practical way of tracking which I have and which I want.
Any help is greatly appreciated. -

Hasten:
If you don't know you need it, then you don't need it.
If you need it, you don't have it.
If you have it, you no longer need it.
That's about it. -

If they change Nukes, I quit. There's a Nuke for everyone's tastes right now. Changing them would be the old fixing what's not broken, and going for a bland, every single one is same thing...
I don't want anyone touching my nuke... unless I'm afk, then feel free to wander by and pop it off for me. That's okay. I like that. -
Quote:I always ask first thing now, if they aren't clear when they advertise. I can't see WHY they start and then bark orders, knowing if people quit, they have to restart. Then, yes, everyone feels obligated to finish. That is frustrting for me too. If I am looking for and am invited to a TF, I assume, unless otherwise stated, that it is not a speed run. I get frustrated when we ge to the first missions and the team leader says, everyone wait here while "X player" ghosts to the objective. I feel that I've commited myself to the team, so I can't bring myself to quit, even though I know I am in for exactly what I tried to avoid by not accepting invites to advertised speed TFs.
I even ask before joining now. If I don't want a speed run, I send a tell, like, "I'd like to join, but I need shards and don't want to do a speed run," or "I'd like to join, but I've never done the task force and want to see the whol thing."
9 times out of ten, they don't even reply... which means... they are the 'too busy to respond types", and I'm better off waiting.
I've been around a while, so I kinda know who's who on my server and there are some I KNOW to avoid, but I STILL find myself stuck doing a TF with a "BOSS" every now and then. I'll finish and then log to take a shower. Makes me feel dirty. -
I won't be fighting your battles for you anymore. I am sick and tired of cleaning up messes you are capable of fixing yourself. You always run into the same problems over and over again. I really just want the best for you and ask that you seek help. Not help from us, the superpowered beings, but from a trained psychotherapist.
I've recently found out that I am not alone in this. You have been asking multiple people to repeat the same tasks you asked me to do for you, over and over again. You seem to be obsessed with the number 8, always asking for 8. Well, we've all gotten together and decided it's time for you to work this whole 'alien' thing out on your own. We will no longer be party to this.
We've been enabling you, and for that, we are sorry. Now, however, we are making a difficult decision which we feel offers you a chance to get better. We will not be looking into anything for you, attacking anything, defending anything, or rescuing anyone for you anymore. If you wish to continue 'saving' people, you'll be on your own.
Please understand that we love you, but you have a problem. It's your problem and until you ask for help (again, not from a superteam), you will always want more and more teams to form. You need to accept the opportunity in front of you and fix these problems yourself.
As of today, I will no longer be joining your Task Force. I wish you the best, and my thoughts are with you. I hope you get well soon.

This is why I run the WST once. Once. It's funnerest that way.
Sure, if a bud asks for help I'll run it a second time. But what silly advantage do I gain by running it 10 times? Oh! I know! I get to run out of things to do quicker!!! Yes!
So many people are in a rush to get to the Pinnacle of power right now... to do... what? Farm more. Run the ITF six hundred more times.
Pehhhhhh. I'd rather systematically take my 50s through the Alpha Bamalpha stuff week by week and have something, anything to look forward to.
Faster is NOT better people. Faster means you are in game less. In game less means more real life. More real life? Yuck.
Okay, I speed run junk when I don't have the time, but when I do have the time, I watch what happens and take it all in.
Task Forces are a team sport. Team sports are funny. Some play for love of the game, some play to be the best, some play for a paycheck (rewards). I play to laugh at myself and other people. Why would I shorten that?
Alpha Strike has given me way more groups than I've ever had, doing way more things. I'm sold. -
Speed TFs don't make me sad. Neither do kill-all TFs. Bad players, I nickname them the TF Law Enforcement Agency, who think that starting a Task Force gives them the final say in how it should be run.
Sure, they start it and have the power to kick players out. Fine. I get that. But when they spam the channels looking for anyone and inviting anyone just to fill the roster without saying it's a 'speed run' or a 'kill all' and wait until the first mish is up, all the while seeing the chatter about how the other players want to run, before declaring "DO THIS!"
And that's not quite enough for them either. If anyone goes off script, they freak out. Even if it fits the strategy. Even if it doesn't hurt the time or the shard count. "WE MUST DO EVERYTHING PERFECT NAO!"
Now, I ask before joining. Once joined, I provide ideas and suggestions. If someone has an equally good suggestion, I'm fine with that. And I will butt my nose in when people bicker about silly details. As long as it gets done and people get what they want out of it, why get all huffy?
Luckily, my SG likes to stroll through content so I have a group when I want to do everything in a Task Force. If I need speed, I can find that too in those powergroups.
There are worse things than speed runs.... failed runs. -
The bottom line is...
It can be done either way and done easily. I was on one where the pylons went down first and it was a cakewalk. -
Guy three boxing a bunch of dual blades scrappers, all with related names, backstory and warcries, pretending to be three different real life people, and they all die while assaulting the computer in the ITF when things got heavy...
To me, "Dammit. That Bonfire killed us."
"Yeah, you killed us."
I wish i'd saved all the cross talk he invented between his 3 characters... It was priceless. They even had a 'vote to kick traget' keybind. So cute. -
This has been a great discussion and I have learned a lot. Enough to convince me to to some very unscientific eyeball testing. With some very very unbalanaced builds. Ice/nrg blaster.
1. The +def focused build with the uncommon spiritual alpha is a beast.
2. The super recharge with some def and rare musculature alpha is a specialist.
I have to give a nod to the +def build for most circumstances.
But, I have more success faster with the +recharge build.
So, it's more about me than about the build. If I played the +def more often, got the rare spiritual etc, I could probably do more with the +def build than with the +recharge.
As stated, these builds are not just plus one or the other, they really do end up with a mix even without trying.
Luckily for me, I have inf lying around to do this and now have two builds to play with that work equally well.
For a brand new 50 blaster tho, yeah. +def is the fastest and cheaper of the two.
I will still run my specialist +recharge and go into overdamage mode most times because I like the edge of the blade. BUT, yeah... it's expensive, tricky and less efficient when things go wrong.
Good discussion. -
Quote:Filled with assumptions.Mmm...
I will make a stand and simply say I oppose Sister and lowbie TFs being part of WST.
I understand that, maybe, just maybe, WST is not only about Incarnate; and in fact it may be only a temporary measure to acquire notices of the well until I20 kicks in.
But as of now, Notices of the Well is a key ingredient for level 50s progessing through out the incanate system, and they can only be acquired via the WST.
Now we can play coy all we want, but lets face some obvious observables:
1. Level 50s progressing in the incarnate system: Needs Notices of the Wells.
2. Level 50s progressing in the incarnate system: Needs lots of shards, and I mean lots!
Why would a level 50 intent in doing the new incarnate material, have any interest in doing lowbie material?
Again we can play coy in this and come up with some lame excuses, but frankly, there is no good reason to do this from an incarnate progression perspective. Today with my 36 level 50 alts, I have no use for low level material, I need shards, shards, shards, and more shards.
As Wendy said, if we take a level 50 incarnate minded player and force him into Sister, what you think that player is gonna do?
"Duh, lets kill all mobs, because some whinny lowbie wants exp"
No, they are going to device and practice the most expedient way to complete a very boring TF to get the only thing of value from it: Notice of the well.
I have expressed my concern in other threads about mixing 50s with lowbies in TFs, and the week of Sis its going to get very very ugly.
The problem is that 2 very different set of goal minded people are going to collide head to head, I predict lasting enmities between players is going to occur from this.
What are the 2 main set of goal minded people?
The first, the obvious, lowbies using the TF to get exp and level. To these folk, nothing but a kill all mobs would be acceptable, plain an simple.
The second, and just as obvious, are level 50s hunting for Notices. To this folk, doing anything beyond what minimally is needed would be unacceptable.
Now I do point the finger at the developers for being "irresponsible" enough to set a clear situation "Sister TF" where these two frames of mind are guaranteed to collide.
Sheesh, and I thought this game was about having fun...
Stormy
Ps: Fortunately by the time Sister comes around I would have accumulated sufficient notices, to not need to bother with Sister at all! After all I need to gain lots of shards from 50s content. Frankly, Sister is plainly a 100% waste of time. Incidentally, does Sister drop any decent recipes? Certainly no chance for purples...
When I run Sister Psyche next week, I'll have no issue doing a kill most or kill all for the lower level characters.
I can run an ITF for shards later.
I can run a few RWZ missions for grai and decon for shards.
Everything you wrote is based on hoe YOU play the game and what YOU want. Me? I'll get the Notice in time, anyways. Might as well get a lively group going while I'm at it? And... then what? Nothing for a week? No, I'll be running TFs for merits etc, some of which are low level.
Not everyone feels the need to run things in the most efficient way. Some of us enjoy the interaction. Some of us have friends in game with low level characters who need the exp and we'd gladly help. Some of us ARE low level characters.
You want shards and a notice? Here's how. Get a solid group for Sister Psyche, get it done quick, then hop over to Cim and use the same group on an ITF. I am willing to bet that in 3 hours, both will be done, you'll have 5 shards and a nictus fragment for more shards if you like.
At worst, it's a 1 and a half our detour from your regular schedule to get something you want/need. If it's that much of a hassle, turn in your mouse and keyboard and take up woodworking or something. -
Quote:Honestly, my casual attitude towards defense is half joking. But I am a super fan of recharge and will stack it endlessly. So basically your secondary build is exactly the kind of build I was advocating. The only true difference in your approach, then, is that you feel comfortable doubling your investment for a balls-to-the-wall offensive build too -- and not even a balls-to-the-wall offensive build that doesn't have a good deal of DEF (20% is more than incidental on a Blaster).
I don't know what power sets you're using; if you've mentioned them earlier in the thread then I apologize for not remembering, but mine was a generalization, and not a controversial one either. Your apparent, initial premise -- that going for mondo recharge is equally rewarding as going for DEF -- is an on-its-face falsehood for most players and most builds, but only because there is literally no build that can't have some measure of both, and from a purely numerical standpoint, the available IO +DEF bonuses are more beneficial, point-for-point, than the available +recharge bonuses beyond a certain, relatively easy-to-achieve, level.
That is even more true on a squishy AT with no mez protection. The ability to avoid anything that could, even for a split second, delay the delivery of more offense is not to be under-rated or under-sold.
How much faster, exactly? If you're including the Musculature boost for the recharge build, then you can't ignore the Spiritual boost for the DEF build.
That much is true.
It's proportional mitigation. Factoring in the inherent miss rate is a misleading way to evaluate DEF. 30% DEF is 60% avoidance. 15% DEF is 30% avoidance.
It's half as many hits, whether we're talking about mezzes, debuffs, or just generic damage powers. That's a significant difference.
And this is where the conversation gets really interesting, for me, anyway. At what point does the extra DEF actually improve your practical damage output because you're spending less time on proactive defensive measures like single-target holds and the lovely but still rather time-consuming (3+ second activation) Bonfire?
Honestly, I think we're all talking around in circles here about the DEF versus Recharge issue. All I take from your post is that you love your Blaster more than other people might love any one particular build, which is great.
You are correct. I love my blaster and my recharge build more than most people love chicken. And it performs. So, when I see posts (not yours) saying building for recharge is 'foolish', I provide the other side of the coin.
How much faster? Hmmm. Sometimes all it takes is one extra second to die, so every second is precious.
As for spending time throwing holds and bonfire and not doing damage... that's usually set up time. Stealth up, set up, bang bang. I rarely need it in an emergency. When I do, it's certainly quicker than hibernate, or phase shifting.
Ten +1 mobs get into melee with you, you're going down. I stay out of melee until the junk is clear, then it's a quick hold/hold on the boss (which, drops some of their unique resists etc allowing MORE DAMAGE) and we're done.
So, I get what everyone is saying about defense. What I don't get is why my style is considered less effective. -
Quote:Okay. You're wrong in the general case. This isn't a shades-of-gray issue unless you engage in the wild flight of fancy that pits +recharge against DEF as if they were mutually exclusive.
You can have 60-80% in global recharge on top of soft-capped DEF to one position or two types (generally ranged or Smash/Lethal, sometimes both if you're very very crafty). That's before we talk about Hasten. If your content with some reasonably high DEF number below the softcap, then your recharge can go a good deal higher.
Without making fruit-loop build sacrifices, you're not going to get much more than about 100% in global recharge (before Hasten) on a build that concentrates on +recharge exclusively. Leaving aside for a moment that high-end +recharge sets tend to be very expensive on the market, this sort of build pays a high-premium opportunity cost for a very small practical benefit with respect to offense. And anything above 100% (which is the mark for perma-Hasten with three recharge IOs slotted) is even less valuable.
Your point about Task Forces is frankly mystifying. Yes, you're more likely to have your DEF buffed in a TF, but you could also have your recharge buffed. And though it's certainly true that you shouldn't have to soak aggro in TFs, it's nice not to faceplant instantly when things go wrong too.
Blasters are already specialized enough. They need every scant bit of general improvement you can give them to perform at the highest level. If dual builds are your preference, then that's fine, but most people don't want to bother with multiple IOed builds. In any case, you border on contradicting yourself when you talk about having a cheap build for DEF, because if it's truly cheap then it has balls for +recharge -- which means that you have two builds that are less effective than one build that mixes both together.
1. By the time I'm finished, my recharge intensive build will have about 15 to 20% defense and around 110% global recharge before hasten.
2. My defense build will have soft capped range def, and about 70% global recharge before hasten.
Now, with Alpha slots, I could bump that recharge up on the defense build and have a nice, steady, survivable high def high recharge build.
Or, I could have less def, higher recharge and alpha slot damage on the recharge build.
Both would have my optimal attack chain up, with a little hiccup in the def build.
But, my recharge build will also have...
1. AoEs up faster with much higer damage for the Alpha.
2. AIM and BU up much faster.
3. Nuke up much faster.
4. Access to purple insp.
Seeing as how there is no recharge insp, and I have cowloads of med and large purple insps, and I consider defense highly situational, I will elect for more damage, faster AoEs, nuke up more often...
15% positional def versus 30% = 1.5 in ten average hits avoided v 3 in ten avoided, with no guarantees.
So, I'll rely on things like bonfire, 3 holds, self rez, hover, stealth and speed, positioning etc.
I make about 10 mil an hour fighting 50 plus, not even considering IOset drops, and rare salvage. That's just selling the trash. I only die when I get silly. I can handle x 8 spawns with bosses.
When I feel like soloing an EB I'll use my defense build but for every day stuff, give me my recharge build. It's entirely an endgame build based on teaming, but I solo it about 2 hours a night, usually making about 20 mil in that time and with a few rares here and there if I'm lucky, I can pull 100 mil a night just from solo.
Teaming? Well, with the excessive amount of melee types in any group, I don't get aggro. When things go wrong, I pull back or pop a few purples. That is rare.
You play different. Great. Applause. But I do very well with how I play. I'm on Pinnacle with the same name as here. Look me up. -
2 to three weeks with no posts = deadthread.
Not my definition. -

Quote:Mostly because it works. There's more to staying alive than your Def%. Lotsa tools in the blaster kit to stay alive. I run about 15% def across the board and am still dropping in more and more sets for recharge. I'm not a recharge monster yet, but the tradeoff for a few ticks of def versus faster faster faster....Damage per second goes to zero when you die.
Most blasters get a ton of damage out of their secondary abilities, which means spending a decent amount of time in melee. Being in melee without having solid defense means you're likely to die.
OP's question isn't about cheap builds; it's not a decision between having a softcapped build with no recharge and a high recharge build with zero defense. And as OP discovered, moving from "high recharge blaster" to "recharge monster" doesn't deliver a ton of benefit. So why would you want to?
Basically, why woulnd't you have ONE BUILD slotted for monster recharge when slotting another build for def is so cheap?
Look. It's a state of mind thing. You prefer defense. In certain circumstances, defense will out perform recharge. In other circumstances (like task forces) recharge will out perform.
I'm not sating you're wrong. You're not. But I sure as hell ain't wrong either. I've done both and know which does what. The OP's question has no answer. -
Quote:Why?I'm closing in on softcapped s/l/e and perma-hasten on my DP/MM. I doubt if I can get hasten to true perma, but being six or eight seconds off isn't a big deal really.
If it's a choice between rech and def, though, I think you're foolish to go for +rech as anything other than archery (and maybe AR.) Most blasters are going to spend significant time either in melee or with things shooting at you, and as OP notes, you can add a lot of defense at the cost of a small amount of functional recharge time.
Death is a speedbump. And I rarely fall down. I'm only in melee when I choose.
Maybe it's not your playstyle, but it's not 'foolish'. Especially when teaming. Especially when you can use your second build for a cheap defense setup to use if needed. Especially when my role is damage.
I don't think building for defense is foolish. I know how it performs. I've done that. For me, I kill faster, make more inf, and have way less downtime with my recharge build. -
So I slotted six kinetic crash. The why:
1. 3 points of KB protection let's me drop Karma from hover and slot a defense IO.
2. Moar recharge!
3. Bonfire is my circle of happiness when the mobs get thick.
4. I can now drop bonfire again before the first one runs out if I need to reposition.
5. KB and corners.
Every attack is still 5 slotted. build up is 5 slotted. Aim 3 slots. So...
I tested. It's super fun. Now, I have something to do between nukes when solo. -
DM/Regen, slotted for recharge and defense, is the lawnmower of ST melee damage. It, uh, does tend to fall down when you get tagged and forget the alpha strike. But regen is hardly the problem with your character.
Bust out Mids, post your build in the scrapper section, and someone can fix it. -
I am a giant wheel of damage.
I am self sufficient.
Support makes me better.
ANY support.
I don't have a favorite. I really don't. I'm like one of those natives from an uncontacted tribe in the Amazon. It all looks like magic to me and is equally inpressive. I don't know what or how they do it. I don't pay attention. It's not my job. I start under the assumption that no one is helping me and so ANY extra I get is super awesome.
