Surely Silver Mantis and Clamor would be better, they seem to have some tastes in common.

While I'm here, I'll put in a vote for Clamor in answer to the original question, too - the safety-pinned fishnets are great, and I like madborgs.

I have to admit, I have always liked The carnie back-decorations, though. And some of the tops. And the boots. Just the colours combinations at times, oh dear...

If you're considering /Fire, have a look at Elec/Fire, too - not for any sensible reasons, it's just one of the more fun AoE toons I've ever played, and it was certainly very flashy. I prefer the level 32 Elec Blast power to the one from Fire Blast, too.

Mind you, I had no mitigation unless you count the pet Empath (a friend I was duoing with) that came with me on all teams. We did have good fun though, especially as the Empath was /Elec, and we found that between us, we could drain things of endurance... occassionally before they fell over burning.

    Any suggestions/advice appreciated
I've played both /Energy and /Elec to 50 as blappers. Both were very fun, and how both play will obviously be very much affected by your primary.

I played the Sonic/Elec first - I did quite a lot of soloing on her (which she was very good at), but also joined teams and generally felt very useful despite being mostly single-target (I didn't take the cone from Sonic). I didn't find her too prone to dying, I could generally take out anything that was attacking me, and did honestly feel I was playing more of a Scrapper role on teams, bouncing around to take out mobs attacking other squishies and so on. She was extremely fun to play, I was a bit shocked when she got to 50 really as it was never really a grind. I wasn't on my home server, so it was almost all solo and PuGs, and she waltzed through it.

Next I made the Ice/Energy. I didn't do this so much because it was an FoTM powerset, I just really like Ice Blast and was wanting to try out /Energy after getting the first blapper to 50. Some people had told me they found it boring, but she was very fun (and very quick!) to level, but it was almost all done as part of a duo with a Rad/Sonic Def. They were brilliant together. Post-50, I found that solo she felt a bit meh, that she couldn't stand up on her own nearly as well as the Sonic/Elec, and that on large teams I just feel a bit useless, especially if running low level TFs. I just end up feeling like I could be contributing more on another toon. However, I suspect this could be changed with a re-build; she's still really oriented towards the duo I levelled her in, and I've no doubt she's still very fun to play in that situation - it's just not one I find myself in much since I got her to 50, as I tend to play my 50s more in TFs.

Obviously these are very much personal experience and opinion rather than the hard numbers, but in the end, you're better off on the set you find more fun, or that fits how you'd like to play better. Best to pick one and try, and if it doesn't fit (or you have so much fun you want to do it all again), try the other! I'd suggest asking about for primary suggestions too if you're not sure, as that certainly makes a huge difference - neither of those were the first /Elec or /Energy I'd tried, they were just the first that I enjoyed and stuck with.

I can greatly recommend Sonic/Elec as a very versatile combination though; I'm tempted to pay to move mine to my home server or level another, as I'd love to have two different builds on her to make use of the different possibilities!

Not that this is a one-way thing, personally I'd make alts on the french server if it was available and play less on Freedom.
I've always suspected that a server-list merge might actually increase the population of the EU servers.

Aside from US and Canadian French and German speakers wanting to try out playing in those languages, I think there might well be a bit of shiny-new-thing effect; people might well try out the two English-speaking servers just because they're new, or to interact with people they now know via the forums. Shift workers might find they're busier at more convenient hours for them. And maybe some of the European players who joined US side either by accident or because they wanted the higher population servers will come back, if we all have access to all servers.

Apologies if anyone's mentioned this as I've not read through the full thread, but I think the best solution would be a server list merge, but then some kind of labelling to give people an idea of what the servers are like - either based on language and geographical area (to help people understand what time zone it's in, and therefore when it's likely to be busy). So something like EU-FR, EU-DE, EU-EN would cover the language of the servers, and also makes it clear the population is likely to be on at European peak times. It could be very discouraging for people otherwise - for instance, a new US player makes a toon on Union at 10PM EST and wonders why there are only 20 people on.

I'd love it to happen, anyway - Union would still be my home, but I'd be glad to see new blood, and I'd probably at least try a second server from the US list - if nothing else, it'd be nice to have somewhere that's populated at different times so when I'm up in the middle of the night there are people around!

Not all teams fighting high level stuff are like that, by any stretch. Bad teams happen in all different situations, and it's not at all wise to put the difficulty right up if you're not sure the team can handle it (for any reason, whether that's related to the toons or player ability), or if the people in the team aren't likely to enjoy fighting that way.

    C) they won't know if this change can be changed until they schedule time for it in their planning for the next issue(s). Changing it more than likely involves an extensive look at the entire Difficulty/Challenge Settings system, otherwise whatever they do is just another stopgap. Since they work weeks and months in advance, they can't say when they'll be able to schedule that. Until they can, there's absolutely zero point in getting uptight or expecting an immediate answer.

Short answer, there's that sense of perspective I was talking about again.
Which is why I said, earlier, I'd like some idea of

    1) Whether this is temporary - I'd be happy with "we're not sure right now" even, if that's the truth of things.
    2) If it is, if it's a high priority.

That doesn't mean I want a timescale, or anything even vaguely precise. I just want an idea of whether the devs even understand that some of us love doing TFs/SFs on high difficulty, and whether it'll ever change back. Again, if the answer is "we really can't say right now, but we understand your concern," I'd be happy just knowing they're aware of the issue.

I don't really care about player supposition on the matter, because let's face it - we're all guessing.

I'm a developer myself, and I'm all too aware that users often get the idea when you say something is temporary, it'll change soon, when by the time you get to it, develop it, and test it, it could be months away. So all I want to know is whether it's on the radar or not.

If you want to talk of perspective, maybe you should take your own advice and try seeing things through other people's eyes. Different things matter different amounts to different people. This one's pretty high up the list for me, and for quite a few people I play with, and I'd like to get some info for my own sake and to pass along to others, if possible. No nerd rage, no anger, just wanting some information and think it's fair enough to be a little sad about this.

If you'd read the end of my post, you'd see that I think that way too. I just don't think an explanation of whether this is temporary or not is very much to ask for.

EDIT: And looking on TEST they've already started to fix the issue.

I can bet in a patch or two difficult TFs/SFs will be fixed back as well.
A couple of us have asked for confirmation, that's all. I don't want to base things on assumption in either direction, I'd just like a clear-cut answer on whether this is temporary or not - and preferably, if it is temporary, whether it's a priority thing to sort out or not.

I was actually having a conversation about this yesterday. I do wish the datamining included difficulty level (maybe it even does already), and that rewards were based on this. Not just because I'd tend to get more as I do ramp the difficulty up, but I'm continually frustrated by people who do just run everything as easily as possible - not because they need to, but because it's a quick way of getting the rewards.

I suspect that if the rewards went up, some of these people would use the higher difficulty levels. And even better, it might get some people who think they can't play those difficulty levels to challenge themselves and realise they can!

On the other hand, it would need to be carefully balanced. I realise some people, or some characters or combinations of characters, do honestly have a tough time with the higher difficulty levels. The difference shouldn't be too great, just great enough to coax some more players over to a more challenging (and potentially very fun!) style of play.

Of course, all this is fairly meaningless if TFs and SFs can't be run on high difficulty anymore, anyway.

I realise this wasn't aimed at me, but I have to say this. Point A there is just pure opinion. Sure, if you're not someone who runs a lot of TFs and SFs on high difficulty, of course it's not that bad. For those of us who do this as a major part of our gameplay, it's a pretty big deal.

To try and give you some context, I took some time off this game (as I do whenever I feel it's wearing a little thin) and waited out I16's arrival. The biggest change for me was the difficulty levels. I can make the game fun again - and now I'm back to being on every night after an issue pretty much gone. This is probably the second most important issue for me, after the one that brought in IOs - as in, these are the two issues I would say, most of all, have kept me playing this game.

I play TFs and SFs more than normal missions normally, so to hear the difficulty levels I've been bouncing around all excitedly about since the first announcements came out won't work on them? Yeah, of course I'm dissappointed. This doesn't make the game just a "bit less fun" for me, it is a pretty major change, and not one I find positive.

Now, if this had been confirmed as temporary, I'd not be concerned - I can completely understand doing a quick & easy fix for a major problem, then following it up with a properly done change. But until it is confirmed, I will be concerned, and I think other people have the right to be as well. You can bet people would be complaining if it'd been the other way, and the fix was to only allow TFs to be done on +3 or +4... and even though I'd love that (Woohoo! I'd never have to put up with a pick-up team insisting on lowest difficulty when I know we could do better again!), I'd understand other people not liking it.

Most likely - and I appreciate it, I wouldn't have known until go-live otherwise as I don't always keep an eye on the Test forum. Knowing has given my coalition a chance to run a high level TF before it becomes impossible.
  14. The worst thing about Scrapyard running is that he spawns, then wanders over to an area near two sets of drones and the Black Market. I've seen him kill himself running into the Black Market more than once - which he either didn't run, or wandered around somewhere else!

Are you just sending random people tells, or people who've said they're recruiting?

I ask because I get quite a lot of (usually new-ish) players who send me random tells asking to join my SG. The SGs I'm in both hero and villain side are pretty much closed-door; it's a bunch of friends, and new people only really get recruited if they're friends of members, or people we've teamed with a lot and get along with, but the SGs aren't massively active because it's just a few of us who mostly play on and off, and all of our alts. I've tried to politely explain that we're not recruiting to people who send me tells, but they surprisingly frequently either get really annoying (begging, won't stop asking, etc.), or even argumentative. As a result, I've just about stopped responding. I doubt this is just happening to me, so it could explain some of the lack of response!

Of course there's always the simpler explanation that people are base editing, or my usual trick - standing by the market, wandering off, and then getting booted off for being AFK.
  16. If this is more than a temporary fix, I'll be very upset - probably the majority of my game time is spent running level 50 SFs at the highest difficulty possible. I realise a lot of people prefer to run them on lowest difficulty so they can speed run them or because they simply find them too difficult, but I find this very dull, and so do most of the people I team with.

If this change stands, I'll be incredibly dissappointed. It's all well and good saying "don't worry, it's temporary," but I've seen no confirmation of that, only player speculation. If there is confirmation, and someone could link to it from this thread, I'm sure it'd be appreciated by those of us who do like running TFs on high difficulty. If there isn't, I don't think confirmation of whether this is temporary or permanent should be too much to ask for.

  18. The sad thing about this study is that it could have been interesting. The guy has a point - but then he's managed to go about the whole thing entirely incorrectly.

PvP zones are exactly what they say on the tin - there are warnings all over saying you have to accept you can be killed. And yet, the zones have always had "fight clubs" and people shouting for 1v1 fights. If you attack those, people throw an absolute fit, even though the people attacking are using the zone for its intended purpose (open PvP), and the people running set fights have been warned they're open to that risk, and could go use the arena.

If this guy had actually bothered to do this properly, he'd have become a good PvPer, perhaps enlisted a couple of friends to help, and then disrupted these kinds of fights with standard PvP.

Instead, he did something that people have been banned for in the past, which I do think nullifies his argument rather a lot. Also, nowhere does the game say the intended purpose of the PvP zones is TPing people into drones. And not only that, but having TPed people, it sounds like he went out of his way to verbally provoke them.

I think one of the earlier posters may be right in the assumption that this guy knew exactly what he was doing and basically has gotten himself a grant to sit and grief people. Either that, or he is very, very clueless. Like I said, it's a shame, because there is actually a point in there. I've always found it absolutely mad how angry some people will get for people PvPing in a PvP zone. Or using insps. Or any number of other acceptable things the guy could have done that were nowhere near as questionable as TPing people into drones.

    [/ QUOTE ]

There are quite a lot of old people still about in general (couldn't tell you as far as PvP as I don't bother anymore), but Filth unfortunately isn't one of them. He usually pops back during any free activation weekends, but doesn't keep a sub going anymore.

Did my last AT combo Rad/Psi defender ever catch on and is it any good now for pvp?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Rad/Psi did have a bit of a day in the sun, but it never seemed to catch on in a huge way. I have one over on Defiant and used to come out of base raids with higher numbers of kills than the Blasters - got a screenshot somewhere with her with the highest kill total for a raid, gave me a good giggle. I've not tried her in PvP since a point when I was doing base raids, which probably should tell you how much of a clue about how she'd handle now.

My general take on PvP now... to my mind, it doesn't honestly feel a whole lot different. The main problem I always had with PvP was that I tend to play villains, and the moment I stepped into RV and killed someone, 10 heroes would show up from some big SG or other and gank, then sit outside of the base. The only times I've gone in post-I13, same thing has happened, except I have a better PC now that doesn't lag out when 10 people attack me so I get to see myself die. I realise if I had the patience I could sit around until things evened out, or if I had the time and will I could get more seriously into PvP and do the same back, but as a fun diversion that doesn't need any planning, it's a bit of a failure for me. The zones were at their best, in my mind, at a point when there weren't a lot of organised PvP SGs, and it was more a case of getting a couple of thrown-together PuGs going in Siren's, and learning to work together. Or when you'd end up with a few solo or duo people against each other in RV.

I should really return to the arena and see if I like that any better now, as I used to avoid it due to all the glitches, but there has been quite a bit of work on it.

Oh, keep diminishing returns in mind as you make any PvP builds, by the way. I believe it applies to set bonuses from IOs, total defense, and all sorts. I wouldn't have the beginning of an idea on how to build a toon for PvP these days, I'm sure someone around here can if you're still wanting to give it a go, though.
  20. I'm with PlusNet (www.plus.net), on their gaming package. This might not be ideal for you if you have other people in the house downloading stuff, as it IS limited - but only during the day.

How we use it here... we've stuck with the basic limit (I think 15 gigs/billing month), because it only applies during the day. Between 00:00 and 07:00 the limits don't apply - so we set any big downloads, torrents, etc. going overnight. We've yet to come anywhere close to using up the download limit despite downloading quite a lot. Also, you can opt to add to that limit as part of the package. I really prefer knowing where I stand and just setting things off at night to dancing around some nebulous "fair usage" limit. BT used to throttle us without warning on a supposedly unlimited package.

They do also do an unlimited package, but I don't think that one specifically prioritises gaming and VoIP traffic. Still, might be worth reading up on.

One of the best things about PlusNet is their tech support, though. They're located in Sheffield, it's not a foreign call centre. They're also not hidously expensive to call. When we moved here, we found someone had actually had the place disconnected entirely from BT. PlusNet were really helpful and did all the administration to get it back up and running quickly. Once that was done, it turned out there was a fault with the line - when we called up, they apologised that their tech line was very busy. We had to wait around 10 minutes, and within another 10 we had a shaky but working connection. Within 2 days (they had to get in touch with BT to send an engineer out), everything was flying.

Like I said, the gaming package might not be ideal for you if you have multiple people downloading large things during the day, but they're worth a look.

And if you don't mind me being really cheeky, if you do go with them, could we send you an email referral code first? They have a pretty decent referrals program - not why I'm recommending them, as I wouldn't be using or recommending them if they were no good, but I'd hate to miss out if I did actually get a chance to recommend someone!
  21. [ QUOTE ]
I think it is quite close to perma and I won't mind a gap of a couple of seconds anyway.

    [/ QUOTE ]

From the phrasing here, just in case you don't know... you need to build Domination up. Perma-Dom works because if you're already in Domination, you can click the power again. If it drops, you'll need to build it back up before you can use it again. So a downtime of a couple of seconds will actually be all the time it takes you do rebuild your Domination bar - which isn't much in a big team, but still, it'll be more than a couple of seconds.

    [ QUOTE ]
Also, the Basilisks are intentionally level 10. I'm expecting that they should be quite cheap at that level.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Level 30s are in much higher supply than level 10s, or any other level. It's generally a lot quicker/easier to get IOs at the level they cap at. You may well have a hard time getting these at a lower level.

The best way to save money but still get them in a decent timeframe would be avoiding using the acc/end/recharge/hold, as the rest are pretty cheap on villain side. Or get the rest at 30 and then place a range of low bids on different levels for that one, perhaps. Alternatively, do rare or gold rolls in the 10-15 pool (after you turn 30), as it's a relatively small pool and you might get it as a drop.

If you're looking for other cheap ways to get more recharge, consider slotting Kinetic Crash in Animate Stone. It gives a decent damage percentage - not as good as a pet set would, but you should do a lot of damage anyway. 6-slotting it gives you another 7.5% boost, and it's a cheap set. You could technically slot it in Earthquake, too, but it might start doing knockback instead of knockdown, which would be a pain.

I'll not comment past that as while I do have an Earth/Fire, she's only level 12 or so, and I've not played either set much on a Dom.
  22. For anyone who doesn't follow the US dev digest, there's a fairly interesting post from GhostFalcon noting that post-Issue, stability and access patches come before gameplay issues, so this kind of thing will get priority.

Of course, that isn't stopping me from checking the PlayNC shop for the new Super Booster several times a day, but good to know.

    Speculation....

    [ QUOTE ]
Best one I heard, courtesy of Xbox Live, was "We saved your @$$es in world war two, from the nazis, yeah, you suck!"
To the Americans, all English drink tea and act snooty, all Germans are nazis, and the French are from Monty Python. Not all of them, there are some very nice people there. But the total is less than the sum of the parts.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You're generalising with that statement just as badly as you're claiming they do.

I lived in America for years - and I got the "we saved you in WWII" comment more times than I can count. And even better, the "we beat you up in the Revloutionary War!" comment. But far more than I got that, I found out that on the whole (at least in the North East, where I lived), Americans are really generous, friendly, open, lovely individuals. That's actually one of the things I miss about the US.

Let's just remember that the internet tends to bring out the worst in people, it's a breeding ground for silly arguments and stupid comments, and it's the most obnoxious individuals who are the loudest. It's ridiculous to take how people of a certain nationality act on a forum as how that nationality is as a whole.

That said, I'm not a fan of nationalism and patriotism, and it's something you find in bucketloads in the US - but insulting them is only likely to cause us to see more of that kind of thing from those so inclined. And it might annoy the ones who aren't especially nationalistic for being tarred with that same brush.

Let's not turn the country vs. country arguments into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    IO Set Bonuses

    [ QUOTE ]
This makes doing a new build very complicated. Depending if I can get hold of (afford) certain sets will determine how many slots I need to use in powers ....

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's not bad once you get used to it. Mids planner is a huge help with IO set builds. And with second builds, you can just make your ideal build (in terms of powers, numbers of slots in each) in your second build, and keep a playable build with SOs or standard IOs in the other build so you still have a playable character while you get all the sets together.

There aren't many IOs that are really that difficult to get ahold of, either. If you have a purple set planned in and know you won't be able to afford it for a long time, you can set an alternate slotting in Mids - say, slotting Decimations in a ranged attack until you can afford Apocalypse. In that way you can plan for both a short-term build and something more long-term for when you have the inf. I'm always surprised by how quickly I get the inf together once I plan something I really like the look of, though.

Sure, it's more complex than doing a standard build, but I don't think it's too difficult to adjust to if you're interested in it.
  25. For what it's worth, I have two accounts and have a toon on one pacted to one on the other. I accidentally let the sub on one account drop and only noticed when I tried to log in to it - when I resubbed and got back into the account, the characters were still subbed.

I don't know if there's a time limit, or it's to do with whether both parties have tried to log in, or whether it's just buggy, but it doesn't always seem to remove the toons from the pact.
