City of heroes article

Saw a link to this on Slashdot...

Professor's hero becomes most hated char

I know that this is primarily based upon the US experience, but is it really that scary over there? Would this happen over here? (If there was anyone in the PvP zones... I think he'd get pretty bored pretty fast, they're not the most highly populated)

Does anyone on this side of the pond think that we'd figure out what he was doing pretty quickly? How long would he last against some of our stalkers? Would he get the level of abuse from the EU players that he got from the US players?

I think we'd probably excommunicate him. But I find it REALLY hard to believe that the Villains on the US side found it so hard to take him down.

What do you guys think? Is the article representative of ALL COX players, or more representative of the US players. Personally I think he should do a seperate study on the EU servers.

I dunno... Having experienced the behaviour of some of the PvPers on the EU servers from time to time, I'm inclined to think he'd have gotten a similar response here too. Mind you, seeing as most of them seem to have gone now, I doubt he'd find anyone to PvP with.

Of course, to be sure, and to fully validate his paper, he really SHOULD run a study on the EU servers as well. Only then can he get a full picture.

It would be pretty interesting if he got different results on our servers though, don't you think?

I'm not big on PvP, but it seems to me he was TPing foes to the drones. I would see that as a cop out, fight fair and square. And yeah, he seemed to talk up his character a lot. I can't imagine he was that hard to beat.

It respresent everyone.

Just because US has a way way way higher population then our servers, it is more common to happen. But we did have our 'we all hate you' people in the game, out of respect i wont mention his name.

This article is the extreme, nothing special. He tells it in a way he is indeed 'US bad boy number one', but within 150k people you are just a 'name', nothing more.

On games such as WoW, this is a daily scenario on every single server of blizzard, and that are really alot of em.

If you behave outside of the 'online rules and respect' box, you will become hated and unwanted, some people easily triggered to offend you with RL stuff. It clearly showed he went on the edge of 'fair play', so it suits him well being such hated.

His methods were poor and lame, those who do not give respect on a fight, will never recieve any respect.

Guy was deliberately griefing in PvP zones, teleporting people out of their fights into his Bots etc (and posting about it on the fora), and he's surprised that he got flamed? If I was Loyola University I'd probably want to start reviewing my research grant process.

Also: the plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

Given that the question posed by his paper is essentially "Is Water Wet?", he could have gotten the proof he set out to find (brilliant science, by the by) pretty much anywhere on the internet either gaming or on fora.

I'm just preparing my own PhD thesis: "Playerkilling in Counterstrike: Does It Annoy People?", which will sit nicely alongside my MA paper "Ursine Arboreal Defecation Habits: A Study."

I agree that he should run a study on the EU servers. There are a lot of cultural differences that would probably become apparent. I think the EU servers are far more diverse in both Culture and Language from the US servers. I suspect/hope that we'd be more tolerant. Hope, being the operative word.

While I haven't read the paper, the article is biased towards PvP. An extremely competitive part of the game, and really not representative of the majority of the players. I would hope that the analysis included the use of alts and an examination of the normal playerbase, and also of the cooperative zones.

It might actually be an interesting read.

It certainly does appear, as Diggis says, that he was using TP Foe to drop villains down in front of Drones. The stupid point he's making is that this sort of action is "as the developers designed it" and is therefore an appropriate course of action. He seems genuinely surprised that he should become so reviled after breaking social conventions and defending his actions with the excuse that he's not breaking any laws.

Shouldn't an academic whose specialty is social gaming be a tad less dumb? Maybe he's never seen a movie where a villain escapes prison because the judge has thrown the case out of court "on a technicality" and has never given thought about the public's horrified reaction to that kind of injustice.

Apart from his academic thesis, intellectual integrity, and even his common sense all being seemingly borked, how on God's Green Earth do you get funding to sit around and play CoH every day? I want that job. Just not the lobotomy that apparently goes with it.

Oh, I remember a certain someone with 4 or more accounts in RV, buffing his character. Slaying mostly new PVPers, hunting them down until they left the zone to never ever pvp again, but when attacked by a mob of fellow smurfers he used a hotkey to get teleported back to base to be buffed again, out, slay someone, tp back to base, repeat endlessly.

The article itself is hillarious btw. He actually think tp'ing people into the drones is a valid tactic, that he's a good pvp'er and noone could "stay alive long enough to beat him". Urhm... And from that he draws even more hillarious conclusions. Must be the nutty professor!

Both cases pretty much shows individuals that can't read social contexts and norms. If you spit in someones face, expect a harsh response. If you touch my girlfriend in an inappropriate way, expect severe, long-term pain.

Yeah... Water is...wet!

Actually, would 'porting people into the drones even count as PvP? You wouldn't get credit towards any ratings or the badges or anything - hardly a legitimate PvP tactic if it doesn't actually gain you anything...

I think you'd even get a harsh warning if people petition you. My point is, doing as "the other one" we all know did, is also pretty much not socially acceptable behaviour. It's going out of your way to make people hate you, then getting surprised when people do hate you.

If you kick someone in the royal crown jewels, don't expect them to love you. The prof. COMPLETELY misunderstood the concept of PVP figthing and the zone. Obviously he didn't go for shivans in BB, try to take turrets in RV etc either.

We're talking at cross-purposes to some extent, here. I'm saying he knew damn well what he was doing, and did it to elicit the reaction he got, to get to the conclusion for his paper that he wanted (which is why I called it 'bad science'.) The comments on the article, especially the ones from US-based PvPers, make that pretty clear —*he's misrepresented his behaviour in the feature.

I love to read up on some of them threads as I could only assume it is slightly bias on his ability. I can't imagine him being a good pvp'er and if he is that hated you would have a lot of people come into the zone just to get him (which shouldn't be hard). TP him and stalkers fire off there Assassinate Strikes.

I would imagine he would get a lot of abuse too this side of the pond. No idea how extreme it would be but I know I would take great pleasure in taking him down.

Camping, It's a legitimate strategy.

whether he didn't go for pillboxes or whatever in the PvP zone, or it's classed as griefing, if you can use Teleporter Enemy on other players then it's okay.

what i found stupid was that they didn't just get loads of stalkers and 1 person with TP foe, all hide on the roof of a building and then just assassin strike him to death.

That or just snipe him with 10 people!

After reading all the comments(and the article) I gotta say, some people don't get it why people are upset. Besides the fact that I feel insulted by some people who are telling us that we should get a life because we play a game.

I find it odd that this man is surprised by the reactions of people who he grieved. Teleporting foes into drones has nothing to do with PVPing, or hell, playing the game. That's just trying to make sure other players get angry at you.

If he had actually played the game he might have come to another conclusion. (Or not, I avoid PvP zones like the plague, mostly because I just suck at it )

He acted that way to get the response he wanted to write the article he wanted to write.

Either that or he's a complete idiot that dosent realise that acting like a [censored] gets you treated like one.

The whole thing was a waste of time the way he conducted it because its not representative of how a normal person would find an online comunity.

Or just fight away from the enemy base. Doesn't say a lot about the IQ of the people he was fighting tbh.

According to someone on the LJ CoH community, he's being a little economical with the truth. He did get killed, at lot, and he left Champion after the PVPers got together and continually targetted his character.

The comments to the article indicate that he was TPing people who weren't fighting him at all —*they were engaging in standard PvP against other players, only to find themselves TP-droned by this guy (to no benefit to him whatsoever), which is griefing in my book.

I'm fairly sure that a community person (or maybe even a developer) posted and said that using the drones in that manner is not what they are intended for, and is a petitionable offense. Was a long time ago though, probably back in Bridger's days.

For instance, Twixt was able to win the zone (capture all six pillboxes for the heroes) literally hundreds of times during his year-long period of breaching play on three different servers. Twixt’s opponents, during this same period, may have won the zone, in total, less than twenty times. Twixt was normally able to defeat, on average, ten to twenty villains a night, while villains seldom killed him more than once or twice during the same period of play -- and, more often, didn’t kill him at all.

bahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

This guy seems to think that the biased youngling "look at how awesome I am" exagguration (or at least very biased approximation) consititutes a scientific statement. Seems to me like a guy saying "don't hate the playa hate the game" only using scientific terminology and writing style. Seems more of an ego trip than research to me...

"Win the zone", tbh.

EDIT: The part I am interested about is him breaking up the 'fite clubs' of warburg and suchlike. It would have been interested to see the conclusions he would draw from the response he would get fighting in a min maxed 3/4/5 man team to break up these 'events'. It's just a shame most likely lacked the skill and/or friends to pull it off and had to go with the far more easy to draw a hypothesis from. I'd also have been more inclined to believe his supposed 'mad skilz' if he'd actually documented numbers rather than just guessing. We all know what 'just guessin' means in a PvP context.... lol sociology I guess...
