They released only a limited amount in an attempt to control and balance population, so you don't have what you usually have in an MMO release, which is several very crowded servers, and a bunch of ghost-town servers that get worse and worse as the initial rush wears off. Since WvWvW is actually a very important part of their game design, keeping the server populations roughly even is actually a very important QOL point for the game.

They're shutting down sales because they're having infrastructure problems and want the game to be stable for the people who ALREADY paid for the game before they let it ramp up any further. And it will, because it's a great game.
"before they let it ramp up any further. And it will, because it's a great game"

I'm sure the GW2 developers wanted to initially screw over it's player base by releasing only a limited amount of servers so they'd have to turn off their market and have people wait in line for hours to log in and then sometimes randomly get kicked off? They're also pulled 20 hour work days for giggles on launch too right?

Mike O'Brien: "We’ve stress-tested every system in the game, but no stress test will get you to the point our servers are at right now with launch"

    also this.

"To be clear, box and digital sales are still available via our retail partners. We are tracking our concurrency closely while expanding our infrastructure. We'll re-enable first-party digital sales as soon as we feel that we can do so safely," - ArenaNet.

So I guess if ARENANET THEMSELVES are saying they need to expand infrastructure, it's still not true right?

    -Q4 FY2005 - GW had 16% (~about $13 Mill) of NC's revenue and US revenue was 27%, CoH had 18% of NC's revenue
-Q4 FY2006 - GW had 22% or NC's revenue (~$16 Mill), and CoH had 6% of Revenue and overall US revenue was 20%.
-YoY between '05 and '06 GW1 had a 27% increase in revenue and CoH had a 27% decrease in revenue.
-Q4 FY2007 - GW has 11% of NC's revenue (~$8 Mill) and CoH had 6% with overall US revenue being 17%.
-YoY '06-'07 GW had a 20% decline and CoH had a 6% decline.

NC figures they can get a 3 year squeeze at the least from GW2 like they GW1, and they figure the same thing will happen to CoH as it did when GW1 comes out. They also figure if GW1 has the same increase in sales/usage as the original did they'll need more infrastructure....line ARENANET THEMSELVES just said.

I would wager something like this: http://mmofallout.com/2011/05/17/cry...eing-sold-off/

First you privately shop around to see what you can get for CoH, then you discontinue but let the development team finish any short term work they were doing while publicly announcing your intention to sell off the division.

You'd get continued sales chiefly because the player base would also attempt to make the game look as profitable as it can if they wanted to keep playing it (look at all the people on these forums willing to put up at least $10 to save CoH right now after the fact) and it would ensure a smooth transition because whoever bought it would have instant admiration and loyalty of almost an entire player base which would give you leeway to make any discomforting changes you need to make.

No matter how bad this is, it's not like NCsoft forged a letter to screw Mat Miller out of stock options like they did to Garriot.
  3. You should probably go back to your day job, advising Mr. Buffet apparently.
  4. Why don't you dig through the FY 06, FY 07 and FY 08 earning reports there and see how much staying power GW1 has? They'll still have server issues next year if they go down to 200,000 concurrent users on average (which they're marking around 400,000 right now)

NCsoft has reported that over 1,000,000 copies of GW2 has been bought, so I doubt they'll be in the red like you say either. Even a conservative estimate of 40 million in revenue will put it above Aion in terms of lion's share if Aion doesn't have a damn well good showing Q3.
  5. In the end, anyone that played Tabula Rasa knows this is standard procedure for NCsoft regarding US Games. They forged a letter in Richard Garriot's name (while he was in space quarantine!) to allude that he was leaving just so that NCsoft could fire him and force him to sell his stock at a low point costing him millions.....then they shut that game down.

Also, for those who want ammunition for the "They shuttered CoH for their servers" argument:

  6. The Rogue Magazine/Hero Dawn Fashion Show was a huge success! We just want to thank everyone that was part of it for your participation, I don't think Port Oakes has seen that many people in quite awhile!

    Special Thanks to:

Zwillinger, Beastyle and Dark Watcher -- You guys always liven up the party and show why Paragon Studios is at the forefront of community relations!

Pinkrise/@Antoinette -- Your style, impeccable; your flare, amazing! May the Rogue Magazine stay on the cutting edge of super style!

DJ Shecky and the Cape Radio Staff -- Another flawless performance from you guys! Keep showing us why we're not super until we put on the cape!

Be sure to come to the Steel Canyon University next Monday for the Hero Dawn School Spirit costume contest! With the Fall 2011 semester coming, come out and show us what makes you excited for our storied institutions of learning! Come as your favorite school mascot, or make a dazzling outfit with your school colors! Perhaps dress up as your favorite or worst teacher? Maybe bring your annoying school uniform? In any case come out and celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of a promising academic year with Hero Dawn!

As usual the event will begin at 10pm EST with Trivia!
  7. The Fashion Show is the Rogue's baby, so if you'd like to be in that you'll have to go to their website and apply.

The concurrent Hero Dawn CC is open to all Genders!
  8. Good afternoon sports fans, it's that time again! Fall is right around the corner, and the NFL will indeed play, that means one thing: FANTASY LEAGUE! Now there may be some private leagues out there with you Virtue-ites, but Hero Dawn is here to go big! So I'm here today to announce our event.

THE HERO DAWN VIRTUE GRIDIRON GAUNTLET 2011!

You're probably thinking why would I want to join this fantasy league (or what the heck is fantasy football is anyways). I'll give you a few reasons. Actually I'll give you a billion reasons. Aside from being crowned Virtue's Fantasy Football king as of now I'm throwing down a purse of 1 Billion influence, winner take all. That's 1,000,000,000. Now this will be the STARTING purse for a 10 player league. If we get more participation, say 16 or even 20 teams, I'll increase the purse. If that's not enough to get your attention, after each week's games, the MVP (player with biggest score) will be awarded 150 Million influence at Hero Dawn's Monday Costume Contests. So if you're good, you can walk away with some serious influence to throw around (if you come with a good costume you might walk away with more)!

Now unlike other Hero Dawn events, I will be participating in this. If I happen to take the title I will split the purse 3 ways and give it to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. So if your looking for some extra fun this fall join us whether you need an extra league or if you're looking to sharpen your skills in a friendly league come sign up!

How do you sign up exactly? I have plenty of ways:

You can reach me in game, @Shwan.
You can PM me here on the forums.
You can go to the Hero Dawn website (http://www.herodawn.com) and find me there.
You can reach me at CptShwan@live.com.

Just send me a note indicating your interest and I will give you the rest of the information. Right now due to the rapid free agency changes the NFL is going through I am aiming at the draft to be around 13th and 14th (perhaps pushed back to around the 19th and 20th). I will be hosting a draft party in the Hero Dawn base complete with mini-events with some sizable influence awards. We are filling up spots quickly so don't hesitate. Once we hit 10 players we'll see about expansions.

Are you ready for some (fantasy) football?!
  9. Makes me want to go into a Blind Tin Mage.

I have a lot of other weapon-based characters (with pistols, swords or bows) that are in the same boat.

If the pyronic animation showed my character doing the "throw a grenade" emote, then the explosion, I think I'd be perfectly happy taking it though.

So, I guess I'm hoping they will add some alternate animations someday.

Ion Judgement: Nanites embedded into your gloves connect with a Weaponized Ion Based Satellite. When Activated the Satellite shoots the Ion charge and you "reflect" the charge to the target for devastating effect.

Barrier Destiny: A magnetic charge generating device embedded into your armor emits a field of magnetic energy capable of slowing and sometimes outright stopping incoming fire.

IDF Lore: Holographic Techonlogy enables you to summon an IDF Clone capable of enflicting Energy Damage to your Enemies. They take the form of IDF soldiers as it creates confusion and breaks the moral of Marcus Cole's legion.

Reactive Interface: Upgraded Ammunition that is networked to provide real time data on target weak spots, Ammunition is also coated in superheated jelly that increases bullet speed and when comes in contact with metal or shreds through soft targets, will ignite to cause extra damage.

My Main Character is AR/Dev and that's how I explain his powers. Wasn't too difficult. Just look for the power that use the Tech Based thread salvage.

Well unless it's the Team Leader that's AFK, if someone is still in the mission and the Team leader gets out, usually when he calls in the contact it'll boot the last person out of the previous mission and assign the new one.

    Time Bomb

I've always found it humorous this day in age that it takes twice as long for myself to cast my silly gun drone as it does for someone else to cast their patron arachnobot or mu mystic.....and theirs don't blow up after 120s either I believe.

Maybe a tank or two like when they had the portal to the Rikti Crash Site tucked in that corner?
  14. Now I hate to be presumptuous about the storyline Paragon Studios is making, but it seems like this whole flare up with Praetoria will dull into a cold war.

Maybe we can get a little bit more canonical with the way we get to praetoria?

I propose later down the road remodeling building 11 of Portal Square inside and out, give it a better Maximum Security Feel than a fence and guard shack.

This way you have a nice setting for new Tip/Morality missions (Rularuu outbreaks and whatnot) and we have a less hassled way into Praetoria when more content starts opening up.

Keep the Shadow Shard portal on the left though, and make the portal on the right to Praetoria.
  15. CptShwan

    Caltrops?

    I don't mind having it

If you have the perception, it's free rep if you find that one dumb stalker that AFKs in the middle of RV. Or if your on a team you can drop it on the tank or brute who's in the middle of a brawl to keep his back covered.

other than that though, not much else you can do with it.
  16. Why in picture 2 of the same album it CLEARLY shows that not only do you not have any device powers, that infact you appear to be an AR/EM?

why do you have to lie to make friends?

There are many people that use sonic/em blasters and their 3 attacks are 1s, 1.67 and 2.67 secs so an AR using a 1s and 1.67s attack spam while jumping around will not be rooted any longer than anyone else. And I will tell you that if there was a blaster in a zone and I was on an opposing team and saw that that blaster has 1300ish hp vice cap hp then he will definately be the target everytime he is out. If said blaster was at the hp cap and depending on his evasion skills he would maybe not be targeted as often but 250-300hp below cap, that is definately a farm target.
Activation time and Animation Cycles are two separate issues. After every attack there's a lull in Assault Rifle, where the character will lower the weapon, and before every attack the character raises the weapon to a firing position. So 1.67 is really 2.2 seconds, and so an and so forth. Buckshot is the only attack where the animation is firing from the hip, so it's a quick attack. So while all Sonic or Energy sets just have to hold out their hand and they keep their hands raises when shooting all sorts of stuff, their attacks are actually 1s, 1.67 and 2.67.

and given the choice between fighting a Psy/Em blaster at 1000 hp or AR/Dev at 1400 HP, almost everyone is going to take the AR/Dev because it's alot less hassle.

Now you have everyone's favorite friend to deal with as an AR/Dev, Redraw. Spamming Aid Self/Surveillance/Smoke Grenade is tremendously detrimental to your ability to sling damage at an an enemy. Executing any of those powers will mean you stop doing damage for 5-7 seconds. You don't need to perma Surveillance, you just need to enhance the hell out of the ability of it, because you only really have one shot at casting it, the beginning of the fight.

Have you looked at the craptastic damage that buckshot does, it is not worth it even with the .9 sec cast time.
Have you seen the craptastic damage the whole set does? Slotting Positron's blast gives you the energy proc that's decent enough, but I'll concede the bonuses for the Purples are very helpful.

We don't have someone flying high above. It is just one of the people on the team and if it is an arena match we talk about the targets right before it starts and if it is a zone then just go in see who is in there, check builds/hp etc, call a target and either target dies or it phases or hibernates or evades. rinse and repeat then call initial target while the no phase timer is active unless they are the type that only comes out of the base when hiber/phase is up. And I really hope you don't think you can target through someone in a PvP zone because you just can't do that. Also I never said that it would be a good 1v1 or 2v2 toon, the OP asked for a better build than the one he has and I will say that the one provided is better, if you want to gimp his build by lowering his hp and adding a poor damaging power then it is his perogative; but I can see that your style of PvP is much much different than what I do so there is no use in arguing the points because we just will never see it eye to eye.
Well I saw nothing wrong with this debate, we kept it civil and I learned quite a few things from your posts. I offered a counter point for the OP as someone who's PvP'ed (yes Virtue PvP I know but still) an AR/Dev since i4 and all the things I've encountered. Sneaky Speedie made his choices so we can conclude.

Moving on, I like that build Dahjee, it's very similar to mine. it's really nice when you grab the the Hover/Fly macro, since with that 47% ranged increase means your webnade will hit them before they can even activate their's for retaliation.

Command and control...blah, then I see you play on virtue.......NO RPvPing goin on here.

Next. Vengeance is not there to be used(although if a teammate dies go ahead and hit it) but it is there for a Lotg Proc, some +hp bonus from the Gaussians and a Karma KB io.

Sleep Grenade is there for the cheap sleep purple set and its associated bonuses. Same for Cryo Ray. (Like I said I would go with Force Mastery but someone really wants to use surveillance)

Full Auto is again really there for the set bonuses. Burst and slug are the 2 powers that you will want to just repeatedly spam hence the double proc's in slug.(looking at the build I posted, I see that I put in the wrong GJ's in Slug. Use the quad and the proc.) Also you can get a running snipe off once you get a little practice at doing it, it really isn't that hard but sniping is not really a power that you are gonna spam anyway.

Slotting for much more +dam bonuses will gimp this more than it already is so I would not mess with that at all.

Lotg Proc, Lotg Def, Lotg Def/Rech, Lotg Def/End/Rech, Karma Kb

Being rooted to the ground for long periods of time while you are one of the easiest and most sought after targets around is horrible and no one will convince me otherwise. If he isn't going to take Hibernate or Phase then the best bet for not being hit is flying, whereas only Spiders, other /Devs or /Traps, and whoever buys the temp webnades can bring him down. Hover also minimizes the effects of knockback from opponents. You can slot the LOTG and Karma into Hover, I wouldn't even bother for the 1.88% health bonus. ~250-300hp isn't much when you only have 7% resistance to things.

The reason someone "really" wants to use surveillance is because trying to spam burst and slug in anything past Siren's Call is ridiculous. By the time you hit RV if anyone DOESN'T have decent lethal resistance then they probably have ridiculous ranged defense. Surveillance gives the Assault Rifle a chance with it's resistance debuff. Also, you can spam burst and slug and throw in a snipe in there here and there, but if you don't slot for more damage then your still doing minimal damage. Recharge can only go to a certain point to where the animation times of the Rifle is what's hindering you, which is why you need a balance of Damage and Recharge.

Slotting Positron's blast in Buckshot would give a similar but smaller bonus as the fort hypnosis in sleep gas, and you have an actual attack because who the hell would bring sleep to a PvP zone? Dominators/Controllers don't even do that babytown frolicks stuff.

I don't know how you elite PvP'ers do things but in my experience when doing large scale PvP, deciding who to kill in what order helps out tremendously. So having someone usually airborne, calling out and being targeted off of/through to concentrate firepower helps tremendously. That's the definition of Command and Control, and that's what AR/Dev is good for because your not going to do well 1 on 1, or 2 on 2.
  19. I'd switch to fly.

SS/Leap isn't going to do much for you when you have to plant yourself to ridiculously long animation times especially since your two big powers are Snipe and 5 seconds of Camera Spin. At least with fly/hover you can webnade any opposition, and if you slot for a little distance you can hit them but they can't hit you. Also fly is more suitable since your build (like my AR/Dev) is suited for Command and Control so with fly you'll have an easier time calling out targets and hamstringing them for your teammates.

Vengeance won't do you good when you're usually the first one targeted for death (AR/Dev rates probably 2 points below a Defender), so I'd cut it.

I'd substitute Sleep Grenade for Buckshot. Buckshot has the quickest animation time of all your attacks so it's either a good lead off attack to get your weapon drawn or in case you need that last few points of damage in a hurry before your opponent takes off.

Finally I'd reslot for more damage and less accuracy, usually at around 60% you'll have enough to hit things that are reasonable to hit (80% still won't help you with slotted stalkers or Widows who really don't want to be hit.)

    PvP Booster Pack

Well I'd wager that you'd need more PvP'ers than those in Pocket D (Virtue is rocking Pocket D 2 recently) in order to get your Booster.
  23. Maybe that's the plan, drive away the current entitled PvP community away so they can truly start from scratch?
  24. It's doable, I have a AR/Dev that goes into PvP.....it's nothing amazing and a pain in the *** most of the time BUT.

    1. Be a Team Oriented build....don't kid yourself, your a Defender that has the misfortune of being called a Blaster. Get the Leadership Pool (at least assault and tactics), Smoke Grenade, Surveillance and Cryo (from Munitions Mastery) at Higher Levels, maybe first aid pool as well. Given the choice between helping the team and doing damage, help the team.

    2. Load up on Perception, be the pointman to let your team at least know you saw a stalker for a split second (even with the IO + Targetting Drone + Tactics they'll have more stealth). Caltrops come in handy as well, if you catch a stalker AFK'ing (which is often) just fly towards him, mentally note the spot where he showed up for a second, then caltrop the spot and lay into him. Easy Rep.

    3. FLY, FLY, FLY! Your screwed already as it is with AR's painfully long animation and plants, so using SS/SJ is suicide. With Fly you can be Command and Control in the sky calling out targets and picking them off with superior range, plus because AR has no laser effects or anything of the sort, enemies won't be able to trace the damage to you unless they look up to see you. The only downfall is that travel supression only really affects you, and if your putting the heat on anything out there (99.9% of PvP'ers have SS/SJ) they'll easily be able to out run you back to their base. Also, keep Hover handy for when the 'L33T' PvP'ers start throwing tactical sharks at you. Hover will keep you in the air against pretty much everything that isn't a web grenade. Since the ability to buy and make jetpacks watch out too, because for some funny reason a guy with SS/SJ bouncing with his jetpack can outfly you......someone with actual fly. Fortunately for you, you have webnades, just put them on the ground where they belong.

    4. Try to IO your build towards +Recharge and +Damage. Your Damage type is shrugged off by almost every PvP build out there, so your only chance is to use Defiance to your advantage. Secondary is +HP and +Ranged Damage Defense, if your being the eye in the sky you don't have to worry about melee.

    5. Put your big boy pants on. You're going to be dying, alot.
  25. Assault (and Tactics) has always been a staple in my build, and it works out well as long as you have it slotted so the end drain doesn't suck you.

Every little bit helps, so the Surveillence + Defiance + Assault + Power Drone pet lets me keep the hurt going and in some cases one shot snipe +1s again. On teams your giving a substantial damage output bonus (If you have 3 AR/Devs together all running Assault/Tactics you make a pretty formidable fireteam.)

    Quote:
Besides the prevailing opinion that /Devices doesn't have Build Up is erroneous. It just has a Build Up with a smaller initial damage bonus (but a potentially much higher one mid combat), a 4 second cast time and a 20 second recharge. It was also called Trip Mine for some reason.
Must be nice to be able to stop in the middle of a fight for 5 seconds uninterrupted to lay down a mine, or wait 5 seconds every mob to lay one down.
