To address your example, there aren't *quite* 35 Superman titles per month, but not too many years ago they each featured a different person with the Superman name. It happened right after "The Death of Superman." It sold like crazy.

Amazingly, not one customer reported being confused. True story.
Uh...yeah. I remember the Death of Superman run, I had a large percentage of those issues.

They were all people claiming to be the "real" Superman, hence the names. And they all had their runs in the 4 Superman titles that already existed. And all were connected in the same storyline.

In the "more than one person wearing the mantle" thing, it almost NEVER happens simultaneously. And there's usually a convoluted and confusing storyline that makes very little sense when it DOES happen.

Bucky took over for Captain America after his death, he was NOT Captain America at the same time. Most of the time when someone takes over a heroic (or villainous) identity, it is because the original is no longer active, be it by retirement, death, dimensional displacement, whatever.

Going back to the Superman thing. All the "Superman" characters that were claiming to be the real one had similar abilities and powers.

Putting it in CoH terms, Superman is an Invulnerability/Super Strength tank with the Energy, Speed, Fitness, Leaping, and Flight pools. (yes, I realize he is MUCH more powerful than that, but that's the closest approximation to him in CoH)

Okay, now you have: A fire/fire blaster, an ice/ice blaster, a BS/WP scrapper, an Earth/Fire dominator, a nin/nin stalker....ALL named Superman. The previous example was 4 characters with the same basic identity, all of which were part of the same story. This is 5 characters that have NOTHING to do with each other....yet all have the same name.

Any time you see the same name on more than one comic title, it is either A) the exact same character in a different book (Spider-Man's many monthly titles springs to mind) or B) characters with a strong connection to each other through an interweaving storyline (the Superman example)

You never see two characters with the exact same name that are nothing alike and have nothing to do with each other.

    Solo Specialists: Stalker.

The first category does well alone, and also contributes to a team. The second category is so specialized in its niche that it suffers somewhat when alone, but excels when on a team. Stalkers do well alone, but their specializations make them at best mediocre and at worst actively detrimental on teams - and this would be difficult to fix without changing the fundamental design of the AT.
There are also outliers in the 3 team specialists and the solo specalists. I have one of each of them (there are more than one)

A Shield/DM tank solos quite effectively, not as fast as a scrapper with the same powersets, but faster than most other tanks.

My Rad/Sonic can solo AVs. I'll just leave that one at that

My Sonic/Devices is actually MORE effective solo, because I have tools to use that most teams don't have the patience for. On a team I am effectively a Sonic/Nothing blaster because most of the Devices powers require set-up time.

I have a DM/Nin stalker that fills the role of a scrapper on a team quite well. My wife plays a Necro/Poison MM and we duo frequently. Her pets make a joke of minions and LTs, and my stalker 3 shots bosses (I've killed an EB with 6 hits before using inspirations) I solo great, but I have a purpose on a team as well. A brute will do more damage than me, but going in cold (with no fury) a brute will take longer to kill a boss.

Since there are such discrepancies within the ATs, any balancing attempts beyond what is already done will throw things out of whack for the rest of the powersets involved.
  3. If you're an SR anything, or a Shield anything don't set Nemesis on x8. When you kill 4 LTs with an AoE and they all pop Vengeance you might as well armor yourself in tissue paper for all the good your defense does.

Barely relevant to the discussion, just mentioning that it's painful to go from unhittable to dead in a couple seconds.
  4. Okay, what about the fact that CoH is loosely comic-book based?

I look at it as my character is the star of his or her own comic book series. Which I'm guessing was supposed to be the idea.

Imagine if you walked into a comic book store and saw 35 Superman titles, all of them a different character. It would kind of lose any sense of what the name means.

One of my examples, Snowstrike, would be a great name for an ice or snow based comic book character, and it was available when I tried it. There ARE pleasing names available still, you just have to try harder now.

I'd be willing to bet that the name Meltdown was snapped up for a fire or radiation based character on every server in the first week of launch, simply because it's so obvious. The first stone tank ever rolled was probably named Rock.

IMO the best names are the ones that aren't immediately obvious.

I happen to like wordplay names, as my forum handle shows. I had a stone tank named Taken for Granite as well.

To put it bluntly: Allowing anyone that wants to be Ultra Guy to have the name is kind of a cop-out. Champions probably does it because there is only ONE server, instead of the 15 we have here. There is no option to try the name on a different server, because there ISN'T a different server.

Well, the Rikti invasion is a situation where they have a foothold, but can't really gain any ground due to the number of heroes and villains opposing them.

They invaded again and were pushed back, but they invaded in such numbers that we can't get rid of them completely, so you get a status quo.

Periodically, they try it again, and get pushed back again. The existence of Vanguard ensures that they won't be taking over large parts of the city, but there are too many of them for Vanguard to just wipe out (since they are constantly bringing in more troops from their homeworld).

My guess as to why they keep trying the same thing over and over: The Rikti, as a species, aren't very good at original ideas. Any other war they've been involved in, their tactic of overwhelming their enemy with numbers has been successful. They just don't seem to be able to accept that that tactic isn't viable in this situation as well.

As far as them not knocking buildings down, maybe their strategy doesn't call for it, since they seem more interested in getting the city's defenses (us) out of the way before they start attacking the civilian populace.

Or: They are trying to minimize civilian casualties in order to convert them into more troops later, and blowing up buildings will diminish the number of conscripts available.
  6. Okay, an example of something smarter AI would cause:

As it stands now, when you get within a certain range of an enemy they will start talking. That would indicate they are aware of your presence.

Currently, all they do is talk. With smarter AI, they would actively seek you out. Add in the "preferred support character targeting" and you have a situation where a spawn comes around a corner and guns the defender down before anyone can react to it. Once a mob triggers it's attack, the target cannot be changed. A tank can't save a squishy that just got targeted for an alpha strike, because the shots have already been fired before he can interpose himself.

That kind of thing would make a defender (an AT designed to be played on teams) all but impossible to play on a team.

That would be bad. There are a lot of players who prefer to play support characters, something like that would make their gameplay experience a lot less fun.

My Rad/Sonic is technically a support character. I LIKE the fact that I'm self-sufficient and don't have to hide behind other ATs to survive. Preferred targeting and active attacking would change that.

Another thing that would screw over a Rad: Their debuff toggles would become useless except on single targets. Why? Because the smarter AI would mean mobs would move out of range of the debuff rather than staying clumped up.

Mobs with mezzes would target controllers first, because that's exactly what we do to them.

Basically any tactic that we currently employ would be used against us. That would be GREAT for the hardcore strategists amongst the playerbase. It wouldn't be so good for the casual player who just wants to play a game.

And, Claws... Just because it's impossible in the current engine doesn't mean it's impossible. the I16 stuff was said to be impossible not long ago.
They never said it was impossible to do because of engine limitations, they said it was impossible to do because it was a metric crap-ton of work and they didn't have the manpower to do it. Kinda like telling 15 guys to go build a skyscraper, just not gonna happen.

Now they HAVE the manpower, so a lot of the things that were just too much work are now more possible.

When they said it was impossible there were only 15 people working on the entire game, now that number is 60+.

I'm not against the idea, like I said before. Some things probably aren't possible without rewriting a LOT of code, and other things would make life hell for some ATs (the healer taking alphas just for existing, for example)

Any change to enemy AI will have to be looked at, at great length, before it's implemented. There's a fine line between "More challenging" and "Downright impossibly unfair"

Edit: I would have myself, but I'm lazy and didn't want to look for it.
  10. Did you have to bring up a server merge? Really, did ya HAVE to?

NO on server merges. Some of us LIKE playing on a low population server.

Myself, I physically CAN'T play on a busy server, I play on a laptop and the amount of lag generated by the population on Freedom and Virtue locks my system up.

If all servers were that populated people with lower end systems (like me) wouldn't be able to play at all.

Oh, and just to forestall the inevitable argument: I CAN'T buy a new computer, because spending $700 or more on a new system just to play a video game isn't feasible for my budget.
  11. +1x2 w/o bosses should be a close approximation of Unyielding.

If you want Invincible, go +2 or +3 x1 w/bosses and AVs
  12. Ah, jeez, another "I can't think of an original enough name, so make them ALL available" thread?

OP, there are plenty of good original names available.

On Pinnacle, within the last few days I've gotten: Amplified, Snowstrike, Realityburn, Shock Effect. That's just on ONE server. All of them were my first choice. The only one that surprised me was Amplified.

Besides, can you imagine the confusion of all the poor NPCs if there was no name uniqueness?

NPC: "This is too tough for us, call Ultra Guy!"
NPC2: "Okay.....There's Ultra Guy who is a tank in blue, Ultra Guy who is a blaster in red, Ultra Guy who changes his costume every couple days, and Ultra Guy who is AFK in Atlas all day, which one do you want?"

Is this saying that anyone who is mezzed stops getting all buffs from all sources except for mez protection for the duration of the mez? Are clicky powers like the FF shields suppressed when mezzed?

Let's say I'm in the defender's dispersion bubble and I get hit with a sleep, but the defender's fine. Am I still getting the defense bonus? If not, how does me getting hit with sleep remove the benefit of someone else's toggle?

Something about this just doesn't seem right...
If you are inside Dispersion Bubble and YOU get mezzed, you will still have the benefit of the defense from the bubble, because the defender is NOT mezzed.

In the reverse situation, if you are inside the bubble and the DEFENDER gets mezzed, you will lose the defense bonus, because Dispersion bubble will be suppressed.

Toggle suppression only applies to your OWN toggles.

Rise to the Challenge de-toggles when mezzed because it has an effect on things other than youself. Any toggle that affects enemies follows the same rules (Death Shroud, Blazing Aura, World of Confusion, Against All Odds, etc.), for some reason Warshade's Orbiting Death is an exception, though I'm not sure why, since it is a damage aura.

So, if a Willpower character is mezzed, RttC will drop, but Indomitable Will, Mind Over Body, and Heightened Senses will remain active. Mind Over Body and Heightened Senses will not be doing anything, but the mez protection and resistance from Indomitble Will will still work (that is to prevent chain mezzes from happening)

If I recall correctly, it is a feature of the PvP changes that was carried over to the PvE game. In PvP if a mez hits it WILL affect you, so they added suppression so characters with a lot of toggles aren't spending all their time turning them back on. The fact that they carried it over to PvE was just a QoL addition.

I give ya'll 2 Thumbs Down in the area of AE!
Custom mobs are a LOT harder than regular (dev-created) mobs. When you make a custom mob set on standard, they have 2 powers from their primary, and 2 powers from their secondary.

A dev-created mob usually has 2 powers...total, a melee attack and a ranged attack. The fact that custom mobs have more than one attack to cycle through makes a HUGE difference. Instead of waiting until their ONE melee attack recharges to use it again, a custom mob can actually have an attack chain just like we can. That means there's a lot more damage coming in, due to less time between attacks.

Any custom mob will be a great deal more difficult than a standard mob, it's just how they work.

It's the spherical cow of attack perfection, one that assumes nothing but single targets, and no delays between attacks for debuffs or teammates knocking critters away or moving or anything.

And if Thunder Strike has the radius* of Spine Burst then I am wrong about dropping it. I'd only tried it out some time (years even) ago on a non-Brute character, but if my memory serves (and it may not), it was a melee cone-type attack--not a sphere--the splash damage was less than the main attack, and it knocked back rather than down.

*Mids says 10' vs 15', which means half the area if both are circular.
Electric Manipulation Thunder Strike is a ST with splash damage, Electric Melee's version is a true AoE, everything hit by it takes full damage. So you were both correct and incorrect.
  17. It's a wordplay pun, Cause and Effect. It was the first character that really hooked me on scrappers and CoH in general. He was also my first 50.

Since the forums here are my first real internet existence, Claws and Effect (or sometimes just Claws) has become one of my go to screen names.

I'm not going to share the other one, just because I don't want someone else taking it
  18. My BS/DA only has one, and he's a little better off than most, since he's softcapped to ranged and melee so far, meaning KB powers rarely hit him. When his build is finished he will have 2 Blessing -KB IOs and he should be fine. Fake Nems can't KB you if they can't HIT you, so that helps quite a bit.

Diabolique was a PAIN, everything she has does more than Mag 4 KB, so I kinda felt like a pinball. other than those 2 I haven't had much problem.
  19. You 7 go that way....I'll go this way....see ya soon.

I've said this before and it worked out just fine.

The team was a tank, 2 defenders, a controller, 3 blasters, and me. If that team had needed a scrapper with them to survive....they would suck. It just made more sense to go kill things in another room while the rest of the team was turning the one they were in into a slaughterhouse.

That's what scrappers excel at (paralleled by brutes) they can handle most anything thrown at them with aplomb.

I've had Empaths tell me "When you die I'm not coming to get you."
My response was "When YOU die...I'll come back and give you a wakie."

As far as your /Regen goes. The problem you were probably having with MI bosses is the Spectral Terror they throw out. DA won't have a problem with that, IT laughs at fear powers. The massive to-hit debuff the Ring Mistresses hit you with might be an issue, but that's an issue for just about everyone.

Yup. They left it alone for a long time, then people discovered you could use it in PvP to get around travel suppression and they put the power rooting back in.

Used to be the spinning animation pre-empted all power animations, now when it's running, you stop spinning, activate your power, and resume spinning.

It doesn't look quite right, but it was the only way to avoid the PvP zones looking like Oklahoma in June.
  22. I'm actually in favor of something like this....on the condition that it doesn't pre-empt other concerns (more content, powers, gameplay in general)

I PvP very seldomly, and this is a feature I would never, or very seldom use. So, it has no impact on me whatsoever.

So, why am I in favor of it?

Simple, the people that are whining that "Server X is dead and there's no one to fight" could finally shut the hell up about it. THAT I would like.
  23. Whoever -repped me for "Claiming to know what the devs want..."

I'd just like to point out that I'm not claiming to know anything. It's simple logic.

If the devs wanted us to transfer things between characters easily, we would already be able to. I'm not going to make a claim that such a feature is easy or hard to do, but it probably IS possible. Since it's been 5+ years and we STILL can't...it is not an illogical conclusion that they don't want us to.

I don't see how deducing that they don't want us to do something by the fact that we still can't is claiming to know anything.

They may change their minds and give us this ability, I don't know that. My conclusion is only regarding the current state, I cannot predict whether or not they will ever have a change of heart on the matter.

For the record, I don't CARE who it was that -repped me. I'm not holding a grudge, and there will be no vendetta, because the rep is really pretty irrelevant. I just wanted to clear up a misapprehension of what I meant.

It's a game balance issue. The max speed for any travel power is in the 90-some MPH range. That's because the game engine can't produce terrain fast enough to stay ahead of you if you were going any faster. If you could run 400 MPH, you would run right off the map into empty space.

Flight is the slowest travel power because it is the safest. No other travel power will let you traverse a zone much higher than your level in complete safety. SS, Super Jump, and Teleport are all faster in a straight line, but have disadvantages that come with it.

Super Speed gives no vertical motion, you're extremely fast...as long as you stay on flat ground.

Super Jump is also very fast, but you run the risk of landing in the middle of a spawn and getting killed, because you travel farther in one jump than your perception will allow you to see. Not being able to see exactly what is at your landing spot is a big disadvantage if you're level 20 and in Peregrine Island

Teleport is almost as safe as flying, but it has a very high endurance cost. Teleport is the only travel power that can run you out of endurance just crossing a zone. To make up for that it is faster than any other travel power in a straight line (also annoying to use)

Flight has NONE of those disadvantages, you can fly in a straight line above any and all obstacles, you can fly high enough to never draw unwanted agro, and you can fly all day long without ever running out of endurance.

THAT is why Fly is so slow.

Base rent is the representation of any real world costs it would require to keep your base operational. If you're on the city power grid, it's an electric bill. If you supply your own power via generators...you need to supply fuel of some kind for them, right?

Since you're so busy fighting crime, you're not really going to RP that your character takes time out of their day to repair a broken toilet in the base, are you? You pay a plumber to do that.

"Prestige" is all of those real world costs rolled into one. It is rolled into one because the devs felt a minigame of The Sims (or something similar) to do base upkeep was a dumb idea.

On villainside you could steal most of that stuff. In THAT case, the prestige spent would be bribes to keep anyone who might care looking the other way. I can't imagine Arachnos would be too keen on you setting up shop somewhere they can't monitor your activities, a well placed bribe to an Arbiter would take care of that problem.
