I'll go with this in nearly every circumstance. The times where a team needs "x" are pretty few.
That said any group of competent players on a team with adequate damage and mitigation is just great. -
I'll have to rethink nearly every single one of my characters but for my tankers, particularly my Invuln and Shield it'll allow me to add that third APP power that the build's too tight for.
I could see Leadership becoming much more common... I know that melee characters don't get as much out of it as defenders but in a group they stack up into pure awesomeness.
I'm not really sure on Aid Self for my Shield tanker... there's just not very many times when I need a heal and when I do popping a green takes care of things nicely. I may pop one or two greens every other mission on average; I'm not sure that's worth a pair of power pics. I'll need to think on this. -
I tend to try for some originality in many of my names; like many others I'll use thesaurus.com to see if something suggests itself. For example, I recently rolled up a new Ice/Electric tanker. Hmm, plug ice into the thesaurus and among other choices I get Floe. A check of electric nets Dynamic. Aha, Dynamic Floe is born.
Another option I frequently use is to look at history; I needed a name for an Archery blaster. Well, the Roman Empire had a formation of archers called Sagitarii. Ding!
Puns are a frequent choice as well like my Stone/EM tanker named BlarneyStone. Or my BS/Shield scrapper named Sword of Damocleve, a play on the legend of the sword of Damoclese.
How about something more descriptive? A peacebringer's inherent ability is to bring more of whatever a team is lacking... if you have tanks then the PB gets more damage, if you have blasters then the PB gets more resistance. It kind of balances the scales of the team. Hmm, ScaleBalancer!
I was rolling up a broadsword/regen scrapper based on the various barbarian characters like Conan, Kull and so forth. Hmm, how about Gortak? It kind of sounds like an ancient barbarian warrior's name. Random letters can make an exotic sounding name with a little massaging. Bare chest with warpaint, rough leather pants and boots and the furry skullcap with horns on it. Add a mid length beard and the look is complete.
If you're completely stuck for a name then step back a second and consider what the character's all about. Does anything suggest itself? That's where my Stone/Fire tanker Granite Flame came from. It's also where my surfer dude Rad/Rad defender Bogus Wave got his name.
A clumsy mishap at the hero registrar ended up with a brand new Spine/Regen scrapper putting a spine burst through the terminal... he had to tell the clerk that he couldn't type in his name because the terminal was offline now. Bingo, his newly registered name was Offline. -
Quote:As you heard you can't exactly do what you want, but I believe you CAN have one key turn both on with two presses... you press it once and sprint activates and a second time and NR activates.I would like to have ninja run and sprint come on at the same time. I am assuming some kind of macro but I have no idea how to do it. Can anyone give me a hand?
This should work, I'll admit I haven't tested it.
/bind r "powexec_toggle_on sprint$$powexec_toggle_on ninja run"
Substitute whatever key you like for "r". I use a similar macro to toggle between combat jumping and super jump or between hover and fly. Press the key once and ninja run activates, press it again and sprint activates. You can have another key to turn both powers off by using something like this:
/bind n "powexec_toggle_off sprint$$powexec_toggle_off ninja run"
Hitting the "n" key will turn off both sprint and ninja run. Again, substitute whatever key you like for "n". -
Quote:Are you sure that you had anti ailiasing cranked to 32x and Ansitropic all the way to 16 before? I just tried ramping my machine up to that and I got a near slideshow in a lot of areas. I typically run 4x AA and 2x Ansitropic and most of the time get 50-60fps. With 32x and 16x I dropped all the way into single digits in busy areas.Yeah, I know I can turn the graphics way down and get better performance. What gets me is that it was running fine with all those levels at maximum just a few days ago. I've not changed anything of my configuration.
My GPU is a little slower than yours but not all that much, it's a GTX 275 overclock. -
Very strange; and no this isn't anything I've seen in game.
Make sure to /bug it, and it wouldn't hurt to PM the video link to Castle.
I saw that you had the combat numbers up, was your defense dropping when the icon vanished or was it just a graphical error? -
Same issue here; also on Guardian.
Deleted an old unplayed lowbie (over 500 days offline and level 3, I figured he could go) and rolled up a new character. Played the new character to level 5 and then swapped characters for an ITF.
On the character select screen I see the deleted character's name still in the slot; clicking on the character gets nothing.
I haven't checked if the new character's name is available again... obviously I'm not too concerned about a lost level 5 character with maybe 10k influence to his name. -
One suggestion I'd have would be this:
Quote:And this:Anti-aliasing: 32x
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x
Quote:Bloom: 1.000 (turned on)
That's what jumps at me anyway. -
Quote:Well, the vast majority of the playerbase could care less about PvP; the powers work differently and the playstyle is very different. From what I've heard a tank in PvP is simply an easy kill no matter what the primary.Thank you everyone again for amazing and detailed answers! So much help here! Part two of the question is. What about when it comes to PVP? Am I simply doomed vs psy? Or should I reference the above and build accordingly?
Unless you're on Freedom I doubt you'll find much if any PvP action. -
Have to agree with this; Psi is very rare in the game and nearly all of the psi that exists is fairly low damage. 99% of the time you'll be considerably better off protecting from S/L/E/N damage, the remaining 1% is what Dull Pain and your inspiration tray are for.
-
Quote:I'd suggest you read my guide to the first 20 levels for a good solid foundation to build on. From there it depends on what you want to do, although if you're just starting in the game I'd not worry about my more advanced soft cap guide just yet; you have enough to learn without heaping too much on you at the start.Hello,
I have an invuln tank and am wondering what side powers would be good to take? I am pretty much trying to be build the ultimate superman take damage and survive tank. I got the jumping side set and use the first jump for it's defense already. I also have health and stamina. I am wondering would it be useless to take the fighting one with bob and weave? I mean could I already soft cap without those? Or what would anyone else recommend?
Oh also I wouldn't mind being able to do some decent damage as well.
If it helps I also have Dark Melee as my other power set. Dark Melee/Invuln.
Thank you all again for all of your advise and thoughts!
An Invuln tanker is perfectly capable of handling nearly anything in the game without an IO set build... it just gets easier to do with one. Due to the complexity of IO builds though I rather strongly suggest you stick with DO and SO enhancements for now until you have your feet under you and aren't still learning the ropes.
Oh, one minor thing, as a tanker you're Invuln/Dark; a Dark/Invuln would be a scrapper or brute. (Primary/Secondary is standard terminology)
<edit>
Oh, on the Psi issue my advise is to ignore it; Psi damage is extremely rare and in all but maybe a half dozen missions I can think of, all in the 40's, what Psi exists is pretty minor damage. Dull Pain and the occasional inspiration should do you for 99% of all the Psi you encounter.
Another point is that you really can't get a meaningful amount of Psi resistance anyway so I don't see the point in going to extreme lengths looking for it. -
Quote:In today's game if you're playing and selling your drops at the market money for DO's is absolutely a dead letter... you should fairly easily be able to buy DO's at 12 and 17 and have several million on hand by the time you hit 22. A full set of SO's at level 22 will, in round numbers, cost a million.A friend of mine says that slotting any enhancements and building IOs is useless until 22. In fact, he says that doing so will actually disadvantage you, because you are wasting money. He sells every enhancement he gets, and all of the salvage that doesn't go into IOs for damage, accuracy, recharge, endurance reduction.
Personally, I like having my powers do more before I've played for days.
Is it really that bad? Is he just power-gaming, or is there some sense in what he says?
I always outfit with DO's at 12 because it does make a big difference in your performance. Now I can agree with IO's in the low levels; excepting for some special ones like Stealth, knockback and so forth those are generally best waiting a bit for... I start IO sets at 27 on most characters.
My normal progression is:
1-11 - whatever TO enhancement drops and is useful gets slotted.
12-21 - I slot DO's in all slots, buying a set at 12 and another at 17.
22-30 - SO's get slotted at this point.
27-35 - I start working on my final IO build; by 35 I generally have replaced all SO's with set IO's and a few common IO's in things like Fitness.
35-50 - I keep updating my IO build as I gain slots and powers and generally slot mostly level 30-37 IO's.
I manage all this out of the character's own resources by marketing drops and playing the game. I usually have over 30 million cash on hand after buying IO's by level 35, by level 50 that's usually 150 million or more, even with spending for IO's while leveling. -
Quote:This is HUGE. Quite a few of the salvage drops you've been selling to the vendor for 250 inf are worth 20-60,000 each on the market. Luck Charm & Alchemical Silver are two of the winners here.Ahh I didn't realize the market was so important, I was just vendoring everything, thanks for letting me know.
Quite a few of the rare salvage drops at really low levels aren't worth a lot, but virtually every rare salvage drop in your current level and above is worth a minimum of 100,000 on the market and many are worth 1-3 million.
For the most part uncommon salvage isn't that valuable with about half of it worth vendor price or less and the other half worth up to 10,000. There's a few exceptions and all salvage is subject to an impatient wealthy character shelling out big money to get it NOW.
For recipes most of the temp powers you get are vendor trash, and common recipes (Invention: Accuracy and the like) are nearly always worth more to a vendor... I just sell that straight to the vendor. Set recipes (under the "Invention" tab in your recipes) are all over the place, some of them like Steadfast Resistance 3% def/Res are worth 15 million or more while many others are worth vendor price. Until you get a feel for what's worth money I suggest checking the price for every invention recipe you have drop.
If you want a guaranteed way to make inf here's a suggestion:
Go to the market and place LOW bids (100 inf) on level 50 rare set recipes that are low value... things like Sniper sets (excluding Sting of the Manticore), hold sets (excluding Lockdown), immobilize and slow sets are usually in this category. The next day pick up the recipes that filled and take them to a vendor for 10k each. I used to use this method to get seed money on new alts... it's very easy to get a million in just a couple days of this spending maybe 5 minutes a day. Just check the last 5 market prices to find things that are worthless and bid on stacks of 10 of them, then come back tomorrow and collect what filled and cancel what didn't. -
Quote:This happens to me, but to be honest I figured it was due to a dirty keyboard.
Mainly because, in the past, whenever I take my keyboards apart and clean them, the issue goes away.Quote:Those of you having this problem: you might want to go into Windows' Control Panel and check the settings in "Accessibility Options". (In Windows XP, it's "in Start/Settings/Control Panel", I'm not sure about Vista or Windows 7.)
Then, make sure "StickeyKeys" is UNchecked!Quote:OK I swapped out my PS/2 keyboard with one that has a dedicated USB connection, and none of the issues that I had with the PS/2 keyboard are present.
So it looks like Windows 7 really doesn't like PS/2 keyboards.
I haven't tried it with a PS/2-to-USB cable yet, but I know that straight-thru USB works for me.
Replacing the keyboard fixing the issue makes perfect sense; dirt and gunk will build up and eventually you have a problem. You can either go to the trouble of cleaning out the KB or you can buy a new one (Newegg has a nice selection of good ones in plain brown boxes for $10-$20). I usually replace my KB annually... they're cheap enough to not be worth the trouble of taking apart to clean. If a simple zap of the air can doesn't fix the problem it's time for a new KB.
I tend to look at KB & Mouse as consumable items; I rarely get more than a year - year & a half out of them. With mice at least by the time they start to wear out there's usually something new and shiny out that I want to replace them with. -
Quote:I've seen this 3 times so far in Praetoria, always with loyalist/resistance mixed teams. MM pets set to anything but passive will immediately attack teammates, AOE's will affect teammates as will debuffs.I ran into this as well, and it was on the exact same mission. Pocket D and ouroboros were not the issue, since none of us used it to get to the mission.
On my team at least, we were split along loyalist/resistance lines (as in resistance members could attack loyalists, but not other resistance members).
Apparently this was reported repeatedly in closed beta and open beta although I didn't run across the problem until it went live. Make sure to /bug it every time it happens and hopefully sometime it'll get fixed.
I've heard that this bug gets interesting in Warburg, all pets will attack their owner -
Quote:Actually if you work a bit it's possible via frankenslotting to ED cap accuracy, damage, endred and recharge in an attack; sometimes in 5 slots. Usually it's even possible to do at a discount since aside from the "good" sets (those with desirable set bonuses) many IO sets are extremely inexpensive. In fact quite a few of them are vendor trash prices... you could actually make inf by buying them on the market and selling them to a vendor.True, I haven't gotten into seriously using IO sets on any of my characters and since I don't mind playing at lower levels I'm not all that excited about losing all of the set bonuses I'm buying. Even Frankenslotting will get limited by ED but at least it'll likely be limiting other aspects than just damage with the same number of slots.
I've seen lots of instances where an undesirable melee or ranged IO recipe is available on the market for 100 inf or less... when I get things like that as drops I typically toss them up for 1 inf. If they haven't sold by the time I need that market slot for something else I pull them of and take them to the vendor for the 1,000-10,000 that vendors pay.
There's a lot more potential in IO's than simply getting the bonuses. Frequently I buy a bunch of cheapie IO's and frankenslot young characters then as they mature I'll start working toward a set bonus build. If the cheapie IO's only cost me about what an SO does then I don't worry about simply deleting them later on in the build. -
Quote:I for one am thrilled to gain 3 extra power pics. Extra slots would be welcomed but they're hardly necessary. Anyone who's leveled a tri-form Keld knows all about slot crunch. So does this mean the fitness pool will be entirely gone? Or will there still be a Fitness pool to choose from in addition to the new inherent?
The reason I am asking, is because if they move the pool in its entirety, then I will still have to fully slot them both. If I needed them 4-6 slotted before, then I will still need them 4-6 slotted. So I gain 3 new powers but no extra slots. Sure I could add the leadership pool, but look how much endurance that pool would cost. Some of my toons could take recall friend, but out of that pool I wouldn't need anything else. And so on.
Which leads me to this question. Why can't or wouldn't they lower the start of the 3 slot lvls. Move it from lvl 33 to say lvl 23. That would add 5 new slots and really allow us to benefit from the new inherents.
Just a thought.
I'd MUCH rather deal with finding slots for 3 extra powers than simply not have those powers to worry about. I'm already considering how this changes my builds; particularly my REALLY tight ones like my tanks & scrappers. I foresee a lot of characters picking up Assault/Tactics from Leadership... they actually work decently well with the base slot and the team benefits of everyone stacking those powers is very high.
From Castle's explanation when you respec your character you instantly gain the fitness powers as inherents (slottable) at level 1-2 (he wasn't certain of the level) and you no longer have the option of choosing the fitness pool powers. -

Quote:It's possible to build in enough +end and +recovery to push a BS/SD at full tilt indefinitely while running a BUNCH of toggles; mine runs 8 all together and the blue doesn't move after 5 minutes of full bore go go go.That's because not everyone is suppose to be a continuously running machine of death and mayhem. I can see regen scrappers with both QR and Stamina, both maxed out to ED, with end reduction in their attacks and toggles coming close but still once in a while I still need to pause for a moment before plunging into the next large hazard spawn while soloing.
I can actually see another 30% recovery there for the taking in my build if I wanted to go for it... since end isn't an issue I haven't bothered.
You're right about on SO or common IO enhancements though Father; it does get tough building for end sustainability without IO sets or at least lots of frankenslotting. -
Some that stick out in my mind.
Tanks 4D Mammaries, a tanker with an amazing set of... lungs.
Yes Master, a controller (I think) dressed in the diaphanous dancing silks... a very accurate take on the Barbara Eden character in I Dream of Jeanie. I was laughing too hard at seeing this one to check a bio or build before she jumped on the train. Am I dating myself by recognizing the source?
A while back there was a Blaster on Guardian named Debt Magnet... haven't seen him in awhile.
My buddy Local Man has a whole raft of rather unique character names... Sultan Battery, Beau N Arrow, the aforementioned Shield Happens and dozens more.
I ran across a Fire/Fire tanker on Guardian back in issue 4 with gray hair, dressed in a suit with round glasses and a cigar. The name? George Burns. I thought it was really clever and the look was perfect. -
Quote:Don't take my build as a gospel, it arose in part thanks to leveling the character in a dedicated team with several other shield scrappers; that's why Grant Cover is so early for example. We all picked it up ASAP to be soft capped at level 28. If I wasn't running with several other Shield toons the whole way to 50 I'd undoubtedly have moved Grant Cover later in the build.Just woke up. Sorry for not responding last night. Thank you thank you for your responses. I'm going to respec and give it a shot. I'm going to definitely imitate "call me awesome's" build. I'll try anything because I'm frustrated at this point. I really thought that my end problems will be over at lvl 40. I hope that when I get that last body mastery power, things will improve. That build looks great. I hope its not too expensive
It is soft capped (using Parry to make up the Melee def) and with my slotting it has hard capped debuff resistance about 50% of the time (when Active Defense is double stacked) and around 75% debuff resistance the rest of the time. -
Quote:Shield:hey guys, im hearin some good thinks about sd tankers and might as well be ss for secondary.
Im lookin for a good build, like when to get the powers and when to slot them, ty in advance
Deflection at 1, True Grit, Active Defense, Against All Odds and Battle Agility kind of in that order. I personally tend to put Battle Agility (Range/AOE def toggle) at 22 after Stamina so you don't have THREE toggles to run early although an argument can be made to swap it with AAO. You'll want everything but possibly Grant Cover and MAYBE One with the Shield.
Super Strength:
Jab, Haymaker, Taunt, KO Blow, Rage and Footstomp are the staples. Hand Clap is the dog of the set (AOE high mag knockBACK) and Hurl is a lengthy animation.
It's very easy to soft cap a shield tanker; in fact you can get within 3% on just SO's with Weave and Maneuvers. Realistically plan on finding about 5% in Melee/Range/AOE IO bonuses. -
-
Fire/SD makes a great Scrapper; I have one I'm working on as a project when I have time. Fire melee offers the most single target DPS, extremely high AOE DPS and because it's secondary effect is DOT it deals that damage for less endurance.
My Fire/SD is only in the low 30's but endurance hasn't been a problem since level 22 and durability is coming along nicely. Heck, I've a BS/SD at 50 that runs 8 toggles full time with infinite endurance sustainability... the Gift of the Ancients set is quite underrated IMO. -
Quote:This cannot be stressed enough; one endred in Headsplitter is worth more than 3 in ALL of your toggles combined.
My BS/Shield has near-infinite sustainability of endurance and runs Deflection, Combat Jumping, Against All Odds, Battle Agility, Grant Cover, Tough, Weave and Sprint at all times. I did it without massive expense too and still managed to soft cap to all positions.
I did it two ways... first all my attacks have at LEAST 40% endred as a byproduct of set IO slotting. Hack, Parry & Disembowel have ~55% endred with full sets of Mako's Bite.
Second, all my shields are slotted with 4 Gift of the Ancients IO's... all the defense ones. That gives me 2% recovery and 1.8 additional points of end per set. Since I have 4 sets slotted that gives me 7.2 more points of endurance and 8% recovery.
A BS/Shield isn't really CHEAP to fully outfit but it doesn't need to be a money pit. I estimate my build is probably worth about $200 million in today's market excluding the Hami-O's that I had in base storage and aren't critical anyway.
While I fully realize that I've made a few compromises in this here's my current build:
