Quote:That's as may be but I still don't consider it worth the difference. The XFX I have is plenty quiet enough. I think my case fans are louder than it is. But I'm also not obsessive about quiet computers. I kind of like a little fan noise. Lets me know for sure they're working and I'm not about to have a meltdown.

Sapphire 5970. Bought. BAM. -
Quote:Just so...and (I'm sure X or Saist will correct any error here) the memory of the card itself really is the last line consideration. It's not going to matter that much until every other limitation has come into play. People just like bigger numbers. The 2GB 5870 should be the new Eyefinity version that's designed for a six-screen setup. Unless you seriously plan to try and run CoH on that kind of scale, I'd doubt you will have any need for it. Also, I'm not sure you *could* get CoH to do that. But if you have deep enough pockets to try, let us know how it works out.
Oh...by the way...Imma buy a 5970 >.> -
Quote:Swatting a fly with a buick: It's the only way to be sure. *Thousand yard stare*What monitor resolution will you be running at? That's going to determine how much card you need for UM.
Regardless, the 5870 will get you Ultra Mode in just about any single-screen setup...kind of like swatting a fly with a Buick. You might consider a 5850 instead for ~$100 less. If you go the 5850 route, the Sapphire Vapor-X model is again your best-quality option.
I won't mince my words. I'd do it because I can. -
Quote:5970s were a little difficult to come by, last I checked. Price isn't a terrible object. From what we've been told by Positron, your 5770 should have little trouble with UM.
I'm not sure you are getting that much more performance increase for the price with this upgrade. Maybe a 5970, but that's an order of magnitude more in cost.
No disagreements with XFX. -

I'm not displeased with my 5770 set-up, but I would like to gank UM. Present system specs are sufficient for something in this weight category (ATX Full Tower, 700W PSU, and so on), though I'll likely drop a little more RAM in it as well.
I opted for XFX since it's been a positive experience in the past, and they generally undercut Sapph prices by a few bucks.
Thoughts? Comments? Saist? X? -

Quote:Jeez people love to hate on the ATI. I appreciate that, historically, they've published some poor drivers but...nVidia really isn't in a good position these days.ATI driver issue? Which issue? If you're referring to the graphical errors ATi cards currently experience in CoX, those will disappear with issue 17's release sometime this month; that has been confirmed multiple times by the Devs.
*shrug*
For my reference, what is that? A micro-ATX? -
Quote:The 5870. Hands down. Dual, at this point, won't benefit you a great deal for gaming (may not be long off though).OK, I am not sure what planets aligned... but the spousal unit has tentatively approved a new rig.
I am examining some Alienware setups in my comparison shopping.
Dual 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5670 CrossfireX Enabled
or
Single 1.8GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 295
or
Single 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5870
(also an option for Dual 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5870, but don't think I can go that far) -
Quote:I just built my first 'from scratch rig' and it took -about- an hour and a half. The pithy comment about operating a screwdriver isn't far off the mark. Welcome to 2010.So this Newegg site is where one can buy components and assemble them into a fully-functional computer, yes?
I'm very leery of trying this myself. I've never built my own computer. How difficult is it?
Or, perhaps better yet, is there a good place where I can pick components ala carte like Father Xmas does and have someone assemble them for me and test it out before shipping it? -

Depends on what you're slotting.
If you're slotting generic inventions, for example, then no; you won't see much of a return beyond three (ie, 3xGIO50 Endurance Mod/Health), and zero return after four (Thanks, ED).
If you're slotting sets (setting or franken), then 'possibly'; it's contingent upon the desired bonuses. -
Seconded. This is an excellent place to start. If you want to customize it, let us know. For your budget, you could do a few extra things, but if you want something straight-forward and capable, just buy what's on the list.

Unlock the appropriate Vanguard (not 'Talsorian' any more) costume part via the Vanguard crafting table in the RWZ. VMerits required.

Quote:Dammit...that was totally worth mentioning also. The HD mounting system for the HAF was a very pleasant surprise - I'd recommend it.The CM 690 II has more routing holes for cable management, uses a larger front fan and swapped out the side fan for a larger top one, uses the hard drive mounting system from their HAF series, is bit larger and moved the top connectors to the top front edge.
It's definitely not just a paint job, lots of little QoL changes.
The PCIe clip, for the I/O shield, on the other hand could be better. It doesn't -quite- fit the 5770. -

.... what?
Seriously, though, I saw a great DBZ rip-off toon (years ago). The guy yelled, toggled on a fire shield (he was a fire tank), changed costume to the spiky yellow hair and flew off. It was flawless.

Coolermaster HAF932. More space than most apartments in midtown. Great ventilation. Not over-bearing in its aesthetics.
I just built using this, and once everything was bolted down the case looked up and said "Is it in yet?"
Srsly. Good buy. -
I wouldn't. The 3200 isn't a particularly powerful GPU, and I'd avoid minitowers like the plague. They severely limit your upgrade options.

Quote:Are you using a separate copy of the CoH directories for Test? It's weird, I can delete the entire folder and try to redownload the whole thing, and it just keeps 'fixing city of heroes.exe' or whatever. Argh.
It eventually stops and says 'Downloading File Manifest' again and then goes to fixing the exe all over again. By the way, do I need to get the updated downloader that says US on it?
Also, while it's running, it says Project CoH Test - Version (null) -
Ignore him, Quinch. Worthless post is worthless.
I can't immediately think of anything game-breaking about this idea, and it certainly confers certain conceptual benefits. I'd give this my support unless a very obvious problem presented itself (no, I don't consider fighting 54s as 49 an obvious problem - this is doable anyway).
Perhaps the best way to curtail potential XP gain abuse would be to impose a small penalty on material returns earned under 'self-exemplar' - say, 10%? Just enough to remind you what you're doing. -
Quote:To ensure that you suffer the misery of pre-travel power life to -some- extent. ^_^That's pretty much my point - have the "old" content, whether it's story arcs, task forces or whatnot accessible through Ouroboros.
And nuts to "lower", why not remove it altogether?
To the topic at hand; This is a conversation I've had with many people on -many- different occassions, and I've got to say, I agree with Quinch.
I could understand, for the sake of kindness to the content writers, not resolving some of the major plots to finality, but -some- storyline development would be nice.
The RWZ stories, for instance, are quite well written. I know them backward, forward, and left to right. I'd like the story of that zone to progress.
More content is good (*cough* GR *cough*). A sense of dynamic development in existing content would be even better. -
Quote:The X hath spoken.Glad to hear you get reasonable performance from that laptop. However from my understanding of Ultra Mode, even at the lowest settings, these new graphic effects can floor the frame rate on lower end video cards to the single digits. It makes the frame loss from DoF, the current #1 frame rate killer, seem minor in comparison.

Just so we're totally clear here, the mobility version of the HD3200 would not be equivalent to a stand alone HD3200 found in, say, a desktop. Not by a long shot.

Quote:I'd say no. That card falls measurably short of the publicly listed (albeit subject-to-revision) requirements for UM.Just got the game downloaded and updated, and I can run the max settings of graphic and sound with no flashing, slow refreshing or slow in processor speed. And I have all the graphic options except for one of them, it's a totally different experience.
Not in beta, I'm talkin about live.
