Thinking of...
From what we've been told by Positron, your 5770 should have little trouble with UM.
I'm not sure you are getting that much more performance increase for the price with this upgrade. Maybe a 5970, but that's an order of magnitude more in cost.
No disagreements with XFX.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I'm not displeased with my 5770 set-up, but I would like to gank UM. Present system specs are sufficient for something in this weight category (ATX Full Tower, 700W PSU, and so on), though I'll likely drop a little more RAM in it as well. I opted for XFX since it's been a positive experience in the past, and they generally undercut Sapph prices by a few bucks. Thoughts? Comments? Saist? X? |
The XFX you linked seems to be ok (didn't check for reviews). It's a XFX custom design which is probably more silent and likely has more cooling power than the reference design (notice the fan).
If it's in your budget, get this one: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814102872. The Sapphire Vapor-X HD 5870 1 GB is probably the best 1 GB HD 5870 on the market.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Regardless, the 5870 will get you Ultra Mode in just about any single-screen setup...kind of like swatting a fly with a Buick. You might consider a 5850 instead for ~$100 less. If you go the 5850 route, the Sapphire Vapor-X model is again your best-quality option.
What monitor resolution will you be running at? That's going to determine how much card you need for UM.

I won't mince my words. I'd do it because I can.
Well the main differences I see beyond price is the Sapphire looks like a factory OC model. But there's probably no reason the XFX couldn't be OC'd to the same degree. XFX also normally does the double lifetime warranty while Sapphire tops at 2 years. Me, I'd still give the edge to the XFX. I just don't really see anything about the Sapphire that really justifies the premium over the XFX.

That's as may be but I still don't consider it worth the difference. The XFX I have is plenty quiet enough. I think my case fans are louder than it is. But I'm also not obsessive about quiet computers. I kind of like a little fan noise. Lets me know for sure they're working and I'm not about to have a meltdown.

Sapphire 5970. Bought. BAM.
Keep an eye on your system.
The 5970 takes a lot of power (especially if you overclock it).
With you running only a 700w PS, you're OK for now, but if you do any overclocking on either the CPU or GPU, you might run into some power problems as you'll be pushing that PS up to near it's top.

Hello, my name is Soulwind and I have Alt-Itis.
Even if you don't OC it, the HD 5970 can draw 300-350 watts when running GPU torture tests. Normally in games it's only around 200-250 watts. And 99% of that power is from 12 volts so at about 30 amps of 12V power just for the video card.

Mhm...it shouldn't be a problem, I have a little room between my needs and the ceiling; no OC'n and I'm not sporting an enthusiast i7 core.
That said, the PSU will be the next thing to be replaced.
Cade_Lawson, what kind of CPU are you using?
See this post for more information on if a better CPU could improve your Ultra mode experience.

Thanks for the link, Tex.
I'm running an Intel i5-750.
Update: Recieved my Sapphire 5970 today (UPS just leaves it at the door? the hell?) and it snapped right into place...okay...i lie. Full ATX case and it took a /little/ coaxing to skirt P1 connection, but it fit.
I was also extremely pleased to find that Sapphire included, with the card, several different power connection adapters ( the molex-to-8pin made me go "Noice!").
Just updating test client now.
See y'all pretty-side. ^_^
Just for kicks, I checked the compatibility chart for Crossfire here, and it's as I thought...the 5770 won't work with the 5970.
Not like that would be more overkill or anything...
