Quote:I never got my Shield scrapper tweaked out to the point of OMGness. But I have gotten my WP scrapper to that point, yeah i got to the point where SoW was pretty much sitting there, unused for days, staring at me saying "Please...please...end my pain. Release me! Release me!"I did that with one of my builds and never used it. I had the same thinking but I never needed it. So I drop it but YMMV.
But then something would happen...something that made me go *click* and saved it all.
Them both having pretty similar tier 9s, I could only imagine it's the same way.
I guess in the end, one could just take the defeat and call it good, and be right back in there and not worry.
Probably just a playstyle thing.

Quote:Well, not everyone has plans to respec at lvl 50, into a completely different build for IOs.Although the majority of the time it does just the opposite... Why should I take all the attacks from my attack set when I only need the three or four most powerful ones to run a gapless attack chain? Why should I take any other powers that are completely superfluous and don't actually serve any purpose?
My main, for example, is built to be an all-rounder. He has good Defense, good Resistance and good DPS. There is a lot of room for buffs of any type (even Defense because he isn't soft-capped) to allow him to make the most out of a team if I do a TF or something. That's all I *think* he needs and he is probably one of my best characters, and I don't think you can call him gimped if I can solo (without insps or temps) three AVs pounding at me simultaneously.
Planning a build using tools like Mid's is a good idea. Tools like this tell you exactly (even if not directly) how much Recharge, Defense and which powers you need to achieve a certain milestone. This is why "too many people" build for Def, Rech and whatever else. They can easily look up the information that is necessary (IO bonuses, powers they can pick, budget constraints) and build accordingly. I have to say, though, that playing 1-50 with a lvl 50 respec/final build is a bad idea.
P.S. Don't bother with the "Mid's is for people who are unimaginative and bad at maths", that's basically saying architects or engineers who use blueprints and calculators are bad at what they do.
Except for my Sword using Scrappers, my lvl 50 builds have kept the powers at the same level I planned to take them as I leveled up.
Changes for the sword users on things like 'are they keeping Parry/DA' or 'am I specing out of the lvl 2 attack, that I took for leveling up purposes'.
With other combos, I havent found this to really be a problem.
Though admittedly, others will do other things with their build I wouldn't do. Like travel power at lvl 49, because they dont plan to slot it, and need a power at lower lvl 47 to be max slotted.
Though with Ninja Run, I've gotten by on just that for a travel power on some toons now
Or in a few cases (due to concept) NR + Hover (this is more likely, but alot of my concepts call for Flight ability...whether its Fly or Hover...Hover just gets the nod for being combat friendly).

Quote:Strangely, when I run into Defenders who say "Offender build" it's something close too...The strategy with being an offender is to maximize damage output and leveraging it with your support abilities. Since live teammates deal damage, your defensive support skills still have a role within this mindset. Technically, any defender with a focus on damage can be called on offender. In common usage, an offender is a defender who has reached the perfect balance between offense and defense, a character that gives all teammates tank level survivability with the fewest possible slots/power choices in order to devote as many possible resources towards damage dealing as possible, the very zenith of existence which all defenders strive for. Most defender powerset combinations are capable of this type of build without making any significant sacrifices. I suggest the following build.
Empaths with powers that effect the Defender (the fact that they effect others means nothing).
Rads with RA & AM (possibly Choking Cloud & EM Pulse as well)...basically wanting a blaster with a self heal (much like the Empath version). This I see the less of.
Sonic/ or FF/ with no team bubbles, and only powers they find useful to themself to aid in their own blasting (this set gives them the mez protection Blaster)
Cold Dom/ with just the Debuffs
I don't recall seeing a Dark/ or TA/ one claiming the "Offender" title. But I'm sure there are, and Traps/ seems like a good one that probably has a few that go that route (not worried about the debuffs, just want to get to the FFG maybe Seeker Drones to add in). -
Quote:That's what I've said as well. That's kind of my point, though- I should clarify. Those nukes affect the targets somehow. I could see HoB causing fear, or more reliable KD than defense to the caster. That's kind of my point in both of the "give it defense" threads... the idea isn't really based on how blast sets or nukes work. Cutting down its recharge or animation I can get behind. Same for more KD or something like that.
Anyway, recently did a Manticore TF with two Dual Pistols Blasters. They did great with HoB, as long as they didn't fire it off first. If they waited for the Scrappers to go in first, it was game over quickly for the mobs, and not the blasters. So using the power well is another big part of this, as I keep trying to point out.
But I think some want it on solo as well. Though, if your solo anyways.
Now if all on blasters...well, that's a team about mass damage at once anyways, is it not?

I'm going to vote Infernal, just because I imagine everyone else to vote for Desdemona, for her bright shiney newness, and being a girl in leather.
-
Actually, the fact that Darkest Night's -tohit AND -damage are in the same toggle is probably a good reason to go Dark Miasma over Rad.
-
Can't go wrong with either.

Quote:I'd take OwtS even on an uber build. That's alot of Resist to stack ontop of Defense.1) Yes to Phalanx Fighting, +3.75% defense solo. Maybe to Grant Cover. It gives you defense debuff resistance even when solo. I probably wouldn't bother unless I was making an uber build.
2) I would probably take One With the Shield UNLESS I was making an uber build, in which case it might get skipped due to lack of room.
3) Travel powers are unnecessary. I'm at 37 on my Fire/Shield, and I'm moving over 60 mph with Hurdle + Ninja Run. -
First thought, how is this an "Offender"? You took all all of the Primary, didn't skip any team powers, and with Rad, I really see the idea of making an "Offender" harder. As you kinda want the debuffs to help yourself out as well as the team.
That said, why not keep Radiant Aura to 5 slots, with Doctored Wounds, saving a slot for somewhere else.
Six slotting in Efficiency Adapter instead of a mix of EA and Performance Shifters, seems like the way to go for AM as well. -
Quote:No. Needed Hover. The character still needs to keep to concept. And while some sets taking all of the Primary or Secondary is a good idea, I wouldn't say this is the case for all sets.Granted the idea of making a DP character, reguardless if its a Corruptor or a Defender Class with Kinetics or Radiant Aura makes me raise a eye-brow and say NO WAY IN HELL!Thats just my personal opinion and shouldnt offend anyone in any way.

I find Rad/ and Kin/ to be lack luster sets for any AT other then the possibilities of a capable Controller. This also is just my opinion.
However appauling I find the use of these sets, theres plenty of ways to fix the NO ROOM issue.
First one is my personal favorite.Use Ninja Run instead of taking a Travel pool.
By level 40 you can easly have Swift, Health, and Stamina on any character build, and be shy only 1 single power between both of your chosen sets for your build.
Iv been curious as to why people have such a issue with lacking powers and having to choose carefully from a staggering amount of power choices due to bad build designs.
The easiest example would be to use the example of 1 of my characters. My SD/Axe Tanker.
It has every single power from top to bottom for its Axe Secondary, and is only missing Grant Cover from his Shield set at level 40.Yes, he has Swift, Health, and Stamina from the Fittness Pool as well.Currently using SOs, he has no Endurance Issues, nore does he have any issues in the Damage/Defense Departments either.
I still have starting at level 41 a Epic Pool choice. This is how I build every character iv got.I litterally dont short change my builds like many people do by taking the Fighting Pool, as well as the Stealth Pool, or even any of the Travel Pools.
Too many people build for Defense, or whatever they feel the character needs, and the majority of the time it gimps it completly.
Iv been capable of taking builds like a Traps/Rad and Tanking for a team when a Tanker couldnt be found or we had a horrible Tanker on the team.I held the Agro and dished good damage because I didnt have to skip anything, but I did skip Web Grenade, because Honsetly...really?Same thing with my Dark/Dark Defender. It could grab the Agro, and hold it like a Tanker.
None of my builds need to take the Fighting Pool, or a Travel or Stealth Pool.
As for DP/Kin being the new Hotness?I havent seen one on Freedom yet.Iv seen alot of DP/EM Blasters, and like 1 DP/Dev, and I dont even recall seeing any Defenders using DP.I rarely play Villians Side, so I cant make a statement for sure on Corruptors.
Long Story short, if you say youv got no room on your build to take a power, then you may be doing something wrong and short changing the ability of your character for a lesser helpful power from the pools. -
Quote:The only TFs where I've seen were missing set defining powers can be detrimental to the team is the late game ones...STF, LRSF, ITF (ok not exactly late game, but lvl 35-50), LGTF can be alot more difficult (But I've never failed this one, so I could be wrong). In a "regular" PUG, I'd say this isn't a problem. Part of the fun in setting up a team is figuring out what does and doesn't work for that particular team composition.
In a "Task Force" though... where (I'm told) team composition can make or break things, then I'd suggest the person had an obligation to inform the team leader that his/her build was different. It's up to the team leader to decide whether this was a deal-breaker. She may have done that, in which case, she's fine.
Part-Troll has already said he wasn't the team leader so he might not have been privy to that information.
The other TFs/SFs are relatively easy enough, it's not really a matter of missing set defining powers. -
Quote:I love Croatoa zone, and thank you for reminding me.The Fir Bolg (People of Bolg) and Tuatha Dé Danann (Peoples of the goddess Danu) are two races in Irish mythology. In surviving text (which date to after Ireland became Christian), they're depicted as mortal kingdoms, but there are hints that in the mythology previous to Christianity's adoption, they were supernatural, including dieties. For example, Bolg is essentially the neolithinc version of Zeus.
Sreng/Streng (a boss in CoH) was a champion of the Fir Bolg. Eochaid mac Eirc (see: Eochai; a Fir Bolg GM) was their king. Bres (a Tuatha boss in CoH) was the king of the Tuatha Dé Danann.
Short answer: Yes, there is non greco-roman mythology in the game.
I just didn't think of them, because when I think of them, I don't think of deities, but rather more of a mystical race.

Quote:That shield is the ONLY reason I made a Shield toon. You're going to make me cry.
<-- has 8 level 50 scrappers, and more on the way.
Oh yeah, I love the costume change emote. And you know what? I was playing around in the AE costume creator and came across the Vanguard shield. I'd never noticed that before, but it's waaay cool! I need to get that for my shield scrapper!

Quote:Hmmm...on a DP/RAD I could fit it in. On my RAD/DP, I can't. :/ The cost of having Tier 2 shields, vs Corrs shields being tier 1.@Psy-Indeed
I guess so Brand...I couldn't do it after I finally saw what it can do but if you don't have room, then I understand :P.
But Corrs still lack a PSY Epic! *Sighs* I just can't win.

I'll have to go with Forbin on this.
Reading the CoH Cannon, it seems they're stick with Greek/Roman mythology for anything deity related.
Now they might have other non Greek/Roman mythology in the game, and I jsut haven't noticed it yet, but I think even Mu/CoT link somehow to it.
I'm also trying to find out if people know Statesman and Recluse are incarnates publicly, or just as background flavor. -
Let's just settle this. They should do a 25% cut on merit cost of IOs!
-
-
Pick an AT with access to one of the following...
KIN or Radiation Emission
...you just got invited to a team! -
Hmmm...hard to say. I find running the ITF to just be all sorts of fun
So that might make it the Cims, but just fighting?
Carnies, because it makes alot of other people cry

Quote:While my main two blasts on my Elec/Thermal are slotted for dmg, Short Circuit is slotted for end drain (Eff. Adapt. IO set)...Seeing as how I can usually drain off a spawns end, before they're all dead, and Short Circuits damage is so low...that yes, slotting for secondary effects can be useful.Erm, you did. At least, to the extend of suggesting to slot for the secondary effect rather than damage, which is basically the same thing in my book (excepting a few special powers such as short circuit).
I highly doubt that draining a few extra points of end from a single target with lightning bolt, or debuffing defense another redundant 15% with some rad blasts, would make up for consistently doing half the damage you ought to be doing. Remember, death is the ultimate debuff. I doubt you'd actually mitigate any more damage in most cases by slotting for secondary effect than you'd simply prevent by defeating foes faster.
That said, I really only find that the case for Elec Blast, for the others, like Ice, Rad (you can slot for Sonic's -Res), Energy, it's a waste to slot for their secondary effects. -
Quote:Do you plan to use IOs? Do you really need Mr Fluffy?I'm trying to make a dark/DP soloist offender, and I need some advice. I know, I know... dark/DP is not the best offender material, but it's a concept character.
First problem - hold resistance... basically, should I take Acrobatics, or should I just carry a bunch of "break free" insps with me? Or is there another way of getting this resistance I should look at (IO's?).
Next problem... damage. Dark doesn't have any damage-dealing powers. In regards to DP, there aren't any real hard-hitters there, either. Pistols is your typical minor damage attack, Dual Wield is okay, Empty Clips does crummy damage in a cone. Switch Ammo is not an attack, and Bullet Rain is ok, but its end cost is too high. You don't get into High damage until level 28, with Executioner's Shot.
Here are some ideas I have for improving my damage... does anyone have any thoughts on these tactics, or other ideas?
1. Hasten... allows me to fire off my two mediocre attacks more frequently, giving me close to a continuous attack chain. This also has the side effect of more quickly recharging other powers that are key to my build, like Tar Patch and Howling Twilight.
2. Speaking of Tar Patch... it has a 30% RES debuff, which is essentially a damage buff for me, as long as I can keep the bad guys in the patch.
3. Incendiary ammo - this ammo type is supposed to add some extra DoT, and it removes the sometimes problematic knockback effect of my pistol shots (which can knock mobs out of the Patch). I just don't know how much extra damage we're talking about here... does anyone know?
4. Punch, Kick, or Jump Kick (not AS because I won't be a flyer) - I could trade Empty Clips for one of these power pool melee attacks. That would give me some extra single-target damage, which is what I really need for knocking down a couple bad guys before Fearsome Stare or Howling Twilight wears off. Punch or Kick would also open up Tough for me, which I can use to mule in some Steadfast Protection IO's for the +3% def and KB prot.
5. Temp powers - I have Sands of Mu, and I'm wondering if temp powers like "revolver" or "gabriel's hammer" will help me out to any significant degree? Unfortunately, none of these can be enhanced with Accuracy, so they miss a bunch.
6. Assault - this enhances damage, but only by about +20%. Darkest Night gives me enough endurance trouble as it is... I'm not sure if +20% damage warrants another end-hogging toggle.
Any thoughts on these few strategies? Any other ideas?
Thanks! -
Quote:This. Apartments are more for those with an inkling of RPing their toon. And reading the boards, and playing the game, you know that's not what they're intending to do.While I love the idea of apartments, I don't think it would do a damn thing for market inflation or the Inf problems. Most of the people who farm and spend tons on IOs because they can, wouldn't stop for a second to make apartments for themselves.
In the end, making it a large INF sink would just bum out the people who are already feeling stretched (the ones that don't farm and don't play the market).
Hint for Future posts: It doesn't pay to suggest a big system addition to "solve" another problem. Propose the thing you want, explain why you want it, but don't try to make it the cure to cancer.

Quote:I'm talking about the in game cannon wise.Pfft. Who's sneaking into Grandville? When I go there I beat the crap out of every Arachnos agent that gets in my way, and Recluse is forted up with his strongest minions because only an idiot would give up that advantage. So if I don't go into his HQ looking for him he's wise not to come out looking for me.
Especially since I can tank him

If you follow in game cannon, no matter how powerfulyou are, it takes alot of work for a hero to get into GV (the fort part, not the wasteland around it).
And tanking him was hard? My WP/EM tanked him without support, and my ILL/RAD tanked him (you have to love perma PA!
) and that was while he was all buffed up by towers.
