Can you post a build like what you are talking about? May not be for me, I am very character concept driven. Still I would like to see what a Top notch defense build that scratches at ED cap on its attacks and has significant recharge looks like.

P.S., b4 we go off into tangents. This particular character is a PVE badger. The build is a "boutique" build that is just pushing the limits for the heck of it.

Now, the Strategy is what I am really asking about here. (I play chess a lot, and strategy is very fun for me) So, the merits of just building for damage/recharge are fascinating. Can you actually use offense as a defense? I have only been blasting a while, but it seems you might be able to.

My blasters do way more damage than my scrappers, but I can solo missions way faster on my scraps because they fit my playstyle better. That is really what matters, playing the characters that you like in a way that is fun to you.
You missed the stealth part I referred to in the OP. I run the full Concealment pool, including the panic button Phase shift, and I have +stealth I/O in flight. Not redundant since it gives partial stealth at full flight speed, and still allows attacking where invisibility does not.

I fly straight to the glowies and/or bosses in missions. You may be faster at killing your way all the way thru a mission, if you seriously want to solo farm the entire thing. That ain't my bag. I really just want to figure out the minimum I have to do, and hit that bad boy with a giant radiation mallet. For a boss fight at the end, a sup'd up EB posing as an AV? Take a bunch of purps to softcap, some reds, a yellow for good measure, have a breakfree on hand just in case. Uncloak and say Hi! If it is starting to looks bad? Hit the nuke, pop a sm blue, phase shift, and go recharge/rethink. Good chance you left the EB with no support at least, next round should go better.

then go back to AE or w/e, restock, head to next mish. That is solo, of course.

In groups, I let the leaders lead. then I make everything in the mobs feel that little tickle that says radiation is melting the meat from their bones. Good times.

P.S. Well written Obitus. You make good sense. As you said, no wrong way. It is a strategy that I am espousing, and a build that matches the strategy. I have 2 (working) strategies, one solo and one for groups. I have worst case scenarios for both, where I might lose some effectiveness, but am still working towards the goal. But the worst case is definitely not usual, it is rare. In general, I simply, beautifully, Blast! I stand (or hover) and deal a tremendous amount of pain. I do question your statement that chasing Def does not take away from damage dealing. I am new to blasting, but from what I have read on the boards a high Def blaster build eats tons of build resources. Maybe I'm wrong, but it makes senses. After building one as a tank with a headstart it makes sense. I would like to see a softcap Def blaster and see how it compares for damage to this guy. I know with my softcap tank it took a lot of build power to get where I was going, and the build lost major damage, recharge, etc.

Adeon: I couldnt get anyone to comment on my build, but the global +damage bonuses in it are really just the ones that happened to be the lowest hanging fruit. I chose to build purple heavy. Damage at (or very near) ED, then for recharge (again, the easiest only), and using the remainder of the build for Procs and such. It is an odd thing, but if nothing else it puts damage downrange.

To me this type of building characterizes the quote from Paragon Wiki "His best defense is a great offense!" Of course, my secondary mitigation is really more the years I spent on Brutes, and knowing when to start looking for panic buttons/exits/etc. My primary mitigation is of course do not get hit. the Orange Bot is a predator, always looking for the next easy meal. Built for burst damage. Planning those bursts is the fun part for me. I choose to build this way because of all the time I spent on Brutes/Tanks. I really do not want to chase that playstyle in the least, but want to see how far I can push the Blaster archetype in the direction it was going already.
  3. Look, I like the game. Mostly do to the communitty, character generation, etc. i like your continuous updates to the game. However, this is like the giant lag spikes in ITF valley. They will never be fixed. IMO.

I crash on entering trials about 1 out of every 10 times. There are giant lag problems with any league over 16 in the BAF. The warehouse room in the Lambda has giant lag/slideshow/lockup problems with it. I can barely help get one crate there in 5 minutes, some cannot go there without full system crash.

Every one of these issues has been brought up to the Devs. Like the lag in the ITF valley, I fully expect this to never be fixed.

Need another example? Ritki mothership raids.
  4. I have just completed the trials (yep, 4 tier 4s, and tier 3'd my alpha, starting from nothing) Took about a week, so not unhappy.

My build is a Rad/Nrg, purp'd out. There is a post a couple weeks ago in this forum if you want. The build is pure damage, with musculature Alpha (soon to be 4 as well), Ion, Reactive, etc. Pure PVE btw.

pretty happy running the Orange Bot, especially after 3 years on Brutes, last 4 months on one single tank. Nice to do raw damage.

Tactically it's pretty straightforward isn't it. Hang back and unleash hell. Strategically, when solo I look at the Boss, or small group, or large group, and decide if I can take them in mostly one chain of attack animations before they get me. If not I use stealth, pulling, inspirations, panic button phase shift to change the rules on them until I win. When with a group of heroes/villains/praetorians/rogues/vigilantes/pets... (did I leave anyone out?) it gets even easier. I just wait until some smuck, doesn't matter who/what, could be a tank, a happy scrapper, another blaster, even a pet, to grab any agro, Then I unleash hell. Seriously not missing defense powers, defense bonuses, or armor. My one nod to game mechanics is 12 pts of KB protection. Stand and deliver is what I say. (or hover and deliver lol)

Any comments that could improve my strategy is appreciated. I am very new to blasting. The general point of the post of course is why spend all the effort/money/limited enhancer bonuses to get any defense when just getting more damage bonuses and smarter killing strategy seems to work like a charm?
  5. I love to complain about the market. Some may recall the great discussion of lastsummer. i still havent been back to that section of the forums lol. However, the OP sounds a tad bit whiney here. I posted above that i spent 100,000 per for 300 Luck Charms a couple days ago. Absolute truth. i think towards the end I was paying 75000 per Boresight. Yes, this drives the price up. Yes, this drives the available salvage down. I laughingly imagined people raiding their own bases for Boresights if they noticed what was happening. But the money flowed thru the game. What really hurt was the almost 1000 I/Os I burned over 3 days getting that badge. I think I sold about 20.

    Kinetic melee

I do not scrap, or do so very rarely. But when I saw this set come out it seemed like it was custom made for Scrappers. How does it actually play? Is the concentrated strike recharging the Buff better? or is critical damage on that missed? or does it depend on if you are running a high recharge build?
  7. No, this is only partially complete. They had Ion, and thats about it of the new stuff.

    Tier 3 to Tier 4

so, in game i thought i read that you have to create a tier 4 from from two tier 3s, specifically it always seems to mention the ones closest to the center (i thought), but in the Wiki i see any pair of tier 3s. Any clarification?
  9. Sitting here with a blank spreadsheet. really want it filled with all the components i need to get to my tier 4 goals. the better to be sorted and prioritized. Any on-line resources with this data, or do I have to go into the game and record what i need, then transcribe?
  10. Let me say this first. I really hate the rewards system in the new trials. I think someone mentioned above they are not running the trials since they feel it is in open beta. Having said that....

The Devs need to be thanked and congratulated. With a rock solid top of 50 for inventions, all of us addicted to character modification are breathing a huge sigh of relief. What would it mean if carefully designed optimized characters went to 2nd string status overnight? Instead, the Devs allow us (with a buttload of work and a kick if you complain about it) to enhance those 50s even further. Better yet, it ain't transferable, marketable, tradeable, or even e-mailable. (although I think they should consider allowing transfers between your own toons)

If you meet a 50 with 5 tier 4s, (or later a 50 with 9 tier 4s) you can guarantee its not an AE baby. Although the player may still suck, the plain truth is they have run that toon thru the stuff for awhile.

So, in short. I hate the Devs current reward system. I love the Devs idea for alllowing character +great stuff at 50. It makes sense they did not rewrite all their worlds end of game storylines. They expanded the game sideways thru Ouroboros logic. Yeah for them.

Now, give me more, and make my rewards transferrable back unto myself for when I black hole a toon. When I take what was one of my top 3 toons and decide to transfer for another character, they are left shatterred. 10 respecs or so to strip all the enhancers. There is nothing left. Pls allow me to get some of the shards/threads/powers off them as well. If nothing else a shard/thread/component self e-mail feature would at least encourage running more characters. After all, if I run a 50 but never plan to Incarnate them much, any special rewards I get can go to my new concept character. this will forestall toon burnout, and encourage diversity.
  11. Uh, this has not been working for years, right? or have I been losing large chunks of time?
  12. Yesterday I was finishing my field crafter badge. The fastest way to do that for me was tocreate level 10 Accuracy enhancers. I made like 300, with a luck charm and a boresight for each. So, if you logged on yesterday, and found the price high on those.....

To everyone selling luck charms and boresights yesterday, thank you, and you are welcome.

It burns me every time I miss with Power Burst or Golden Dragonfly. Because I know that was a significant chunk of damage missed plus the attack time I just wasted.
I have run about 6 trials since i started this post. I had fallen into the habit of BU ST attack chain, Aim, ST attack chain, wait for build up again, usually just one chain down, maybe two. But it is really hard to read my damage effects in the mob. Maybe i should pop the Aim, BU, ST chain to ensure that big damage ST chain actually connects.

I personally can't, I think it's the low shader that causes this? I have to play with that practically off or I get the 5fps on EVERY map due to my old PC, so I'm stuck with no workaround until the devs address it. I think somewhere up the thread someone posted that a private dev conversation confirmed they were at least aware of the issue.
Wait, I play on lowest settings. there is no way I can run Ultra. Are you telling me if i dial up to what, max?, non Ultra settings these maps will run right? and PS, that stinks.

    Dear Devs

I have horrible Lag in the Destroy crates (get suppression grenades) section of the Lambda specifically. I have heard rumors it is due to the way they coded the shelves. I have no idea. I do know that if I try to help with the crates I go into slideshow or worse. I think it has something to do with the warehouse rooms. I got so frustrated with rewards on my main that i started a new Blaster, and soloed quite a few story arcs in praetoria (so I could get the 5 times one alignment badge, then the switch badge). Same issue whenever I hit a warehouse. Was so bad at one point that I had to set up, see my boss target, pop 5 reds, and start sniping. No other way to kill my target, If i tried to move the comp slideshowed so bad it would not refresh but once every 20 seconds. My system is old, but i know it and dont try for much. i have 2gig ram, and run on absolute nothing settings for graphics. Still, freeze frame. Why on earth did the Devs do that?

    Build up and Aim

It sounds like it is probably worth it in ST combat as long as I hit Cosmic Burst right afterward then (Close, extreme), and I will definitely try to pop it before launching a AoE blitz against tough mobs. Thanks.

    Build up and Aim

Okay, i have built my Rad/Energy Blaster for Damage, damage, recharge, damage. somewhere down about 15 posts is the build if you are interested.

I am pretty new to dedicated Blasting, and here is my question. My build is pretty high recharge, and all attacks just tipping over ED cap damage. My ST attack chain has no wait, even without hitting Hasten. Just spam the 3 attacks. Pretty much the same with my AoEs, although i have to jump around to realign the cone. That means I actually need to interrupt my damage cycle to build up or aim. Does the bonus from these boosts overcome the animation time away from my attacks, especially when wailing on things like Marauder? It feels like I am doing less damage when I take time to hit the boosts constantly, but I bet the damage curve goes up when I do. Anybody got the low down on the build up?
  18. I have just started blasting in earnest. Having great fun, when my face is not firmly planted at a low horizontal level.

I am wondering if there is a good way to research which mobs are susceptible to what primary/secondary effects. After all, knowing which mobs are susceptible to Fire, Energy, etc. would be a great boon. Who has KB immunity? Who gets extra KB? (Clockwork, at least the original ones, etc.)

Give this to the devs, there is no shortage of variation in the enemies you will see across the cities. It would be quite informative to discover how Blasters, a very odd class whose main defense is, well, blasting, actually effects what they are blasting.

I could try to set up a spreadsheet regarding this, group by group, etc. But reinventing the wheel is counterproductive is something decent already exists.
  19. I have ben leveling a lowbie for last week and a half. To avoid the trials lol. Now the thing is 50. Soooo, trials....

Did they fix the problem where the Alpha slot shuts off in the trials when you die, and you gotta hit "Walk" to reboot it?
  20. Keep SoW, crashless 2 min buff. Kept me on my feet during many a ITF. No Taunt? I used to never take taunt on my Brutes for years. A lot has changed. Free Health/Stamina. AND they made it harder to get that rage bar clocked. Without a high Rage Bar you are a fragile Tank. Taunt is wonderful Hasten? I wouldnt take it on this build. Then again, when I ran my SS/Will I had 5 purp sets and LOTGs falling off him like jewels. The main reason for rech IMO on this build is Footstomp, of course. You have so danged many redundant melee attacks there is no reason to RECH the build, and your secondary is either passives or toggles. But that FS needs to be up as often as possible, so know that as your building for RECH that its all about that one power and think how deep you need to dig that hole before you start.
  21. It is hard to go wrong with a Willpower Brute. I had a SS/Will as my main for almost a year. Another option is Dark/Will. This gives you a heal, big ST numbers, and the buff is 30 seconds with no crash. I think you mentioned haste, which brings the buff up even more often. AND, since running haste, the PBAoE endurance bar filling power is nice as well.
  22. Thanks Rylas, and everyone. Yeah. I have tried Blasters many times over the years. (Who can resist that damage lol?) But, indeed, I played them like a melee toon. And my Brutes always ended up being better suited to me. Then a funny thing happened, I started playing high level Brutes almost exclusively, and I started doing more Patron/Epic attacks....and I started trying to play my Brutes like Blasters. So, back to my old blaster projects. I guess I should be thankful they brought Rad over to Blasters. My robots are just not the Fire attack types. I really wish Energy was team friendly, I really love the animations. But at least with Rad I get an extra AoE.

I think I have gotten all the ideas I can out of this. I have scrutinized the tables, that chance for Knockdown is the only Proc that might help mitigate the KB, and it looks like sometimes it will actually add KB.

So, that leaves me free to throw an Achilles Heel or a Force Feedback Proc in it instead.
  23. Yeah, I really hate KB. I mean, I love everything about Energy Blasters, every animation, the concept, I could go on. Hate KB. When I solo Energy Blasters I love my knockback, it just freaking works. But this is a Blaster I am building to be my main for the next however many months. I plan on doing a lot of TFs. I have both Hover and Fly, and CJ (mostly to mule a LOTG). I really wanted to take Force Mastery for concept and extra survival. But I have been thinking about another Patron/Epic pool with more AoE (and KB mitigation). Unfortunately that only solves the problem for high level TFs.

My other option seems to be to figure out which mobs are subject to KB, so I am a wiser player, and use the hover above tactic where I can, KB into corners/walls where poss, and know when I can let fly cause KB resistant mobs.

But it would be a danged dream to be able to throw a proc or something into it that will just stop it.
