After I saw this diagnosed quite clearly on the boards some days ago I assumed it was fixed. However, it happened to me last night as soon as I joined an SG. I am hoping the log out/log in thing works. i'm trying to get my wife into the game, so I'm on an old box with lots of problems, why add flickering?
And why I am really posting...When will it be fixed? It's a pretty ugly obvious bug that has been clearly diagnosed. Can we get a fix? -
Okay, some of you saw (or helped, thanks) my thread on helping my wife start out in the cities. She is doing good and starting to have fun with her Nrg/Nrg blaster. I have almost convinced her not to save every citizen on the street lol. Of course, right now agro management is non existent.
I am on a Dark Melee/Invulnerable build. I am already lining up a trove of I/Os to cram down onto it with the goal of making it tankier so I can handle more of the wild situations I suspect will arise.
Would anyone have a softcap DM/Invul build sitting around? I think I have a level 10 Glad proc lined up, and a bunch of other stuff as well, but I do want to be efficient.
Also, I never take Confront on a Scrapper. I rarely take Taunt on a Brute. When I do, it's not to tank but to make sure I get my fair share of Fury generating agro. Should I take it on this character, or should I just concentrate on tactics communication with my wife and killing whatever i can as fast as possible? -
Quote:Okay, it has been pointed out above that some of my math was off. To be picky, my math was fine, my underlying facts were way off on the statements I made lol.Another point for thought is randomness.
I'm not a high end tanker or anything like that, but part of the 'cost' of specializing in defense is that 'on average' that gets tacked on to everything.
With resistance, you know that every attack that lands will do x% less damage, you can rely on that.
With regen/high hp you know you can take X damage per second, or X total damage. You can rely on that.
With defense, even slight deviations of randomness can get ugly fast.
In those 20 attacks, on average you are taking 900 damage. a slight randomness of a second attack hitting you puts you to 1800, a big swing of say 4 hitting you gives a pretty scary 3600.
That resistance fellow tho, well, if he takes a few extra hits, hes probably going to be ok. If every attack hits him, hes still in the ballpark of slight variance of 2 hits on the defense guy.
This makes him a lot more capable of dealing with an angry RNG.
Its also part of what makes layered defense so strong. Eventually, you will get that bad set of rolls. Once in a 100 groups, your softcapped defense eats 5 or 6 hits out of the 20 attack alpha, and if he doesnt have some resistance to back that up, hes eating dirt.
But here is a statement I can make definitively. I have run a Willpower / Strength Tank Softcapped to all damage types. Wow. it was in my over four years in the game the absolutely easiest run i ever had. I could tank anything on it. I even tanked Recluse in the last TF blueside where the softcap does not apply. Call it luck, but I held him solo for about 5 minutes. Literally able to tank anything. Now, i had to taunt constant, cause Willpower has a crap agro aura, but never had a problem wading into the ugliest of fights. For incarnate I went for + Def and +Heals whenever possible. So in the iTrials i was still tanking easy.
I also ran a Invulnerability Brute for the 1st year i was in the cities. When you hit unstoppable resists go up to 90%, yet I faceplanted with Unstoppable up a few times.
Those are my experiences with resistance and defense. Good luck in the cities! -
Quote:thx Adeon. I sent you a test e-mail. Hopefully we will get the trade done soon. I am helping my wife (new to the cities!) and she is leveling a nrg/nrg blaster. The dark/invul scrapper I am duoing with her on is working overtime, and any I/Os I can shove down onto him can only help lol.Yep, I have one I can trade, send me a tell at @adeon hawkwood
When is the last time you heard this in Atlas. "We can't just let them mug her. We have to fight them." Seriously. You know how many hellions are in AP?... By KR and the Atlas Safeguard she was starting to get the swing, but can still pull mobs from anywhere. -
Not sure what you been looking at in the store. i've probably spent too much (don't tell my wife) But I have bought Beam Rifle, Street Justice, Rocketboard, the Halloween Pack, and one extra enhancer tray (20 per character!0 and am very happy with each offering. I also bought little costume pieces for a helmet that really make some of my bots more distinct.

there are links to really well laid out arguments about how/why defense is much better than resistance. I don't link things. But I do know the truth of it. Defense is by far the better of the two to have.
In general, if you have 20 attacks coming at you doing 1,000 each heres how it goes. If you have softcap def (45%) 1 of those attacks will hit (on avg) for 1,000. Then you get to resist with whatever you got, then your health takes the hit. (layered defenses = def/res/health) Same attack with 5% def running (similar to what some sets run) 1 attack misses, 19 hit. 19,000 pts damage. say you got capped resistance 90%, you take 1,900 pts.
Furthermore, the more you look at maxing/capping/chasing bonuses thru I/os, the more obvious it becomes that its easier to chase def than res. And since Def is more effective point for point...
If you armor up with a set like Invul you get good resistance, and then add a lot of def bonuses, and Invul has very good heal capability (along with def debuff res) you get a very hardy tanker/Brute/Scrapper. Compare with taking a defense only set like SR or Ice, where you are largely missing one or two of those layers. -
Okay, i am an altoholic. Even I do not want this. And I am in the process of deleting months worth of ITrial rewards right now as I clean house.
Here is the reason, for me. For a character to be incarnate there has to be something about them very special. If you could strip everything off them, that specialness goes away. I really plan out now whether I iTrial with a character. It generally affects how much I i/o them. (less is more, if I i/o them too much, and want the I/os, I have "to shatter" the character, and delete...
So if I both pour a couple bill into a toon, and grind itrials with them, wow, I love them. It makes me think 4 times before I go to wipe them out. -
Good point Scientist. The cities design is pretty complex, and she might not learn that at all if I over-tanked. If I duo'd with her until 50 using a solid tank/herd then blast style she would never get to know her own agro control. I even keep a window up for NPC chat, so ambushes wouldnt even get her.

Quote:Wow, you've just cured me of ever wanting to "seriously" role play on-line. lol. i'll stick with one-liners in character and trying to personify a hero and/or villain doing super things.I gave up long ago on trying to join serious learning about powers rp groups. Because every last one of them has one type who is there at all times. In fact I suspect the player lives at their keyboard.
"My dad left my mom when I was only five, but not until he set fire to all my friends and kicked my puppy. Then my mom and I lived in a cardboard box. She made me make toast in the morning by cooking moldy bread over a candle. If it burned it she beat me with a piece of pipe. If I didn't burn it then she beat me with a golf club to remind me never to burn it.
The first time I kissed a girl spines shot out of my body and impaled her. She died in my arms. The same thing happened to the next 10 girls I kissed too.
Every time I armor up I feel the pain of every person in Paragon who has ever died screaming in agony. Then I get a drink"
In other words the emoier than thou type. I want to play with somebody who says "Oh wow. Look at this. I just managed to make a bird out of ice." not "Look, I just made a heart of ice. A heart as cold and dead as that of my father Satan, prince of darkness."
here's my 2 inf, which after being discounted may in fact be worth much less than 1 inf:
I been roleplaying a very very long time. Ever since D&D. *note, did not say "A D&D" I love the City of X. I love making characters, costumes, backstories. If someone walks up to me and says something even halfway resembling something an actual hero/villain would say in that situation I will always reply back "in character voice." I like my characters. If you talk to them, they talk back. However, as often happens in the cities, whether it be just LFT broadcasts, brother can you spare 1 mil inf, is your team leader running AE, or a thousand other "in-game" questions that arise, I just answer. Not really in character, because questions like "How do i put this up for auction" is not something my Robot/demon/vampire/martial artist is aware is even going on.
But if you come up to me and start talking "in character" you are guaranteed to get "in character" responses. I will specifically not treat you as crazy. If you try ERP then it may get weird, but I will remain in character. Most of my city of X characters have E as very low on their priority list. But i will remain in character for the whole jaunt.
I wonder how many other individuals in the city this is true of. Sure, some will never "get it", or just do not want to RP. But a lot of us are just standing there, ready to be interacted with in character. Like a super theme park come to life.
I may start specifically start trying to only speak in character for a few weeks, just to see how many go along. Haters will hate, clueless will be....well, clueless. So what? I paid my nickle, and there's always that guy in red tights standing across the street to talk to. -
I'm not worried about survivability. I have a trove of I/os, and have run Dark Melee/Invulnerable Brutes. i am sure a Dark Melee/Invulnerable Scrap, built right/run right, can take everything that is gonna happen pretty well. I am more interested in that uber powerful taunt that Tanks have. scrap challenge is a nasty insult to one person. Brute Taunt is horrid insult to a group of peeps. Tanker Taunt is insulting an entire prison gangs mothers and then crapping in their meal trays. They tend to forget the Blaster and wanna talk to you. That's more directly my question. How does the taunt mechanics vary? I rarely used it for my Brutes, and i never take it on my Scraps. And CoH titan red Tomax is still down.
-
Okay I finally convinced my wife to try CoH. It took Free to play, and us getting a second box, but it happened.
Sooo.. She has chosen an Nrg/Nrg blaster. Sigh. that part is just not negotiable, she has her reasons/storylines, and they are good ones. Game mechanics or not.
I have been a long time Brute player, and have made a few pretty solid tank runs. Recently I have been Blasting and Scrapping. I was hoping to be able to duo with her on a Scrapper, but I am getting kind of worried as the hour of character creation approaches.
I thought I should ask the experts. Do I need to run a Tank to manage agro for one Blaster? Even a KB crazy Nrg Nrg? We will be running at +0/x1. We will be running the new storyline content (I am not that familiar with it) We will be hitting all safeguards. I will try to convince her to do the level appropriate Task Forces. She has no interest in PUGs, but I have some MoHunter friends that I think will be glad to help. After 30 (when exp slows and the new content dwindles) we will probably run the old story arcs.
So, do I really need a Tank for this? ((If I do Dark/Invul would fit the team concept well, but I am flexible - Dark/Fire (er Dark Melee/Fire armor, why are you guys backwards lol) Tank might actually do enough damage and still Be Tanky on these settings?)) or can i get away with a Brute or Scrap? -
The real problem is she chose a Nrg/Nrg blaster. Shes gonna be knocking peeps right offa me left and right. I'm not worried about her ST knocks, but when she cones she is gonna street sweep my herding. At least she'll be in the same room, so we can co-ordinate I guess. I'm starting to think Brute for better agro management, I want her to have fun. But you're right, Tank would be overkill. Kind of funny, but overkill.
-
Your prob right Werner. My first thought was a dark/Invul Scrap. That should hold the agro pretty well? Or should I swing over to a Dark/Invul Brute to ensure I lock it down?
-
I have a Glad Armor +3% def level 50. I need one at level 10. I will trade and have 250mil to sweeten the deal. Pls send me a private msg here, or respond to this thread. Thanks.

Been thinking about it a lot. Seriously considering dark/dark scrap as the escort for my wife (new player)'s Nrg/Nrg blaster in the city. Gonna run some of the new content, all the safeguards, some alignment tips/missions. At later levels 30+ probably run a few story arcs. I might also try to convince her to do the Task Forces as we level, although she is not keen on PUGs. (Anyway, thats my plan)
Anybody see a huge problem with a dark/dark scrap trying to agro manage for a new blaster? I know a Tank or even a Brute would hold agro better, but at least dark has the damage aura. I'll be dropping I/Os into the build asap. At level 7 will drop in 12 pts KB prot and a +3% def. Trying to trade a 50 Glad for a level 10 Glad as well-that would give me +6% def. I'll also throw in that proc for the dark armor heal so that end is better manageable.
Anyone got a link to Dech's build so I know what to shoot for in the holy dark armor realm? -
I am looking for a biuild to cruise with my wife (she is a new player) I've been considering dark/invul. I know Dark and Invul have incredible synergy, as I have run it on a brute. Is there a synergy for Dark and Regen? It seems that you are heavy on click heals from both sets, and the End recovery attack in DM would not be so useful? (Not sure, I have not really run regen) As much as I love DM ( The graphics are cool for 'vamp' type themes, the utilities are incredible, great ST damage, the buff is 30 secs ) in many ways Dark is not a great set as well. I would think there would be a stronger choice to pair with a Regen character. Of course, concept and fun trump all, but I have these questions. (and hopefully my wife will join me in the cities tonight, so I need a character lol)
-
If I saw someone who wasa 50 and lost (especially if they were standing nearme) I would check their badges. If they had 0 veteran badges I would give them 5-20 million, depending on how much I had on me and how much I was in a giving mood at the time. I always give at least 5.
You gotta support the new peeps, however they choose to play. -
I realize this is more appropriate to a college philosophy and/or arts class, but what the heck. I want to hear the voice of the cities. That wild thrum of voices and opinions that shout opinions through the ether and beliefs as if personal truths were weapons to be used as bludgeons. (My attempt at a "Tick" inspired rant, probably too much sarcasm, not enough crazy?) -anyways, a great example of why I brought this up. Originality.
For me, in trying to voice the Tick's character, I will never be able to do it like the original writer. Not without a bunch of pharm-a-help. Yet I am inspired by the big wacky blue guy, and wish I had thought of it and/or had the character in the cities.
Now, much like there are a limited number of plot lines (7 seems to be the#), there are a limited number of iconic arch types. Yet, there are an unlimited number of variations that can be done. And we must all admit that we are touched/repulsed/inspired by so very many things that go into the characters we make up.
I once took a lyric from the band Rush. I used it to name a D&D character many many years ago. I ran him in 3 major campaigns, different story tellers, for over a decade. He became a God of War, and I ran him as such in the cities. Was I unoriginal in coming up with a name. If anyone pinned me down, I would say yes. Yet that is a great character, and I have had many many fun hours voicing his persona. Was what I id with the lyric original? The song has absolutely nothing to do with chaotic fighters in a sword and sorcery setting lol.
So, what is originality, what are examples of stuff you consider original? When you set out to create a name/story/costume/persona do you start with a truly blank slate and build an original character. Or, like i tend to do, do you get a "feel" for what you want, and start pulling from the shelves in your mind all the seasoning and ingredients until you have a creation?
And i guess where I am going with this, is how important is ensuring each piece is truly original/unique/untouched? i am pretty good at whipping into my mind's eye and finding something that is perfect to parody/alter/make my own version of. I am much weaker at staring at a piece of paper and being like "Name = Original, Cool, Unique, Untaken, Perfect" "Costume = Striking, Bold, Original, Neverbeen done before", etc
Is parodying and building your own versions of things enough to make them original? -
hrm. Seems like very few people are actually even interested in this. wow. It regularly affects my playing experience, but I guess it is not the hot button issue I thought lol. Still, i think these are good suggestions for quick fixes that would work quite well. I hope someone saw them and scrawled them in a notebook.
-
Consider Dark Melee / Invulnerability. For both Brutes and Tanks (and Scrappers) it generally gets votes as one of the most survivale right outta the box.
-
So, I got over 4 years in the cities. Here's my 2 inf. I mostly play villains, and by most I mean like 99%. 2 things got me Blueside. 1) Going Rogue. 2) More people.
i would still be redside without both those things happening.
I am constantly trying out new archtypes in the cities, and new powersets, and new concepts. Now sometimes I want to do a lot of content with a character. I have solo'd every single story arc/every contact/every mission, multiple times. (diff toons, of course)
Most of the time when I get a new toon I want to 50 it, see if I like it, then I will iTrial it if I do. These days the fastest way to do that is blueside sewers to about 25, then mix in good mission teams when I can, and ITF. (for me) Now if I cannot find a hot running team after 25 I will go back to the sewers. The theory being its faster Exp then a mediocre team that is stumbling along, and way faster than spending a half hour looking for anything. A hot team 25-49 is always best. Unfortunately, in my experience, most teams have no idea how to shred. They either are completely lost, or the team wants +4/x8 for the "great experience" Then the team cannot handle it, and it goes slower. Sad, cause the same team could grinding +0/x3 and make bank exp in no time (imo)
6 months ago I was looking for/paying for farms. I would pay 10 mil a run without thinking if the farmer was good. The game has changed. What hasnot is that I will always be looking for a fast way to level my new concepts.
PS Since I am mostly a redsider I am still a little lost on Blueside. I have learned PI is accessed from Talos. (why?) and am learning mre allatime. -
The last two names I googled were very frustrating (see my thread in player help for the long version) The 1st sounded like a copywritten character, even though the inspiration was from physics. When googled it was used to name a race in another game. Finally approved by GM. (Zerg)
The second was in my head for a few days, common english phrase, finally had to make a character. Gogled it this time. Was a character in a skit on Chappele show. I honestly didnt know. On the brightside Chappelle altered the spelling. I like Chappelle, but I have only seen 2 of his shows. To me the humor all seems to be the same, and I would need to take up serious smoking to be able to sit through the 2-3 seasons of that stuff. His black white supremacist was excellent, I must say. Anyways, after I googled it I cringed. (The english term is "Buck Nasty" Chappeles character "Buc Nasty" My character "Buk Nasty") Anyways, since I am running a giant white guy with Red hair who keeps trying to get into Longbow (and failing) and want to be a hero, and Chapelle has a black playa of low morals I think I m on solid ground.
But seriously, I think I am creative. Its just that as soon as you find something short, punchy, memorable, and fitting, google it. With all of human knowledge documented and at your fingertips there is a good chance some guy (like that hack Shakespear, he took my Puck!) has used it before.
I understand CoXs position. Its just that it gets frustrating sometimes. I made up a villain fr a champions game my wife was running (old school, tabletop, dice) I named the characte "Scourge" Not original, but very fitting. He had set out with the goal of becoming a scourge to humanity, greatest riminal of ll time, yadda yada. I made him in the city, ended up calling him "Scourge 23" ran him for 6 months, had billions in his build, with that dumb name.
I should make names in advance, but my problem is once I start working on a concept I drop all that I am doing until the character is made. Conversely, when I decide to make a new character I really want to get the concept done, and sometimes that seems to mean forcing the name too fast. This is only exascerbated by the name filter in CoX and the fact there there is 7 years worth of names already claimed on peoples accounts. (Many of whom will never log into the city again..) -
Wow. Great question, if only for historical understanding. Not sure what use te answer will be, other than try to guess what direction any changes/additions to the I/O system will be.
You are gonna need someone who was up on the thought processes of te Dev team as they were working on this module. Did they publish any of tis anywhere? Is there a guide to the design of the system squirreled away? Did they share these thoughts, was it discussed as it went onto Beta/Live?
I always assumed they used odd numbers because of the rule of 5, and they wanted to be able to add others very similar in bonus. In truth they do not seem to add new sets very often (have they added any?) So maybe the design had more to do with "We want the players to be able to get to X value, but only if they perfectly fit these 12 set bonuses. Or, conversely, we do nt want these 8 set bonuses to make it so "sample archtype" can achieve "undesirable bonus level" -
I have been thinking about this problem. It has happened to me a few times in recent weeks (maybe 6) as I have been running a lot of Death from Below trials. Of course, a stuck mob there ends the run. Like with any kill all.
Without some major change ensuring mobs do not get stuck (or it starts to happen much less frequently) I believe there needs to be a way for a player to fix the problem.
I ran a grav/nrg dom for a while. There is not a lot of love in the game for this build. It seems the only time my teams ever gave me an attaboy was when I wormholed a stuck mob and we could continue an ITF, etc.
I was thinking maybe each player (or each VIP...) should get a permanent power, usable once every 1 to 3 days. This would provide a wormhole that would /unstuck the mob. The main possible problem that has been brought up is that it is sometimes impossible to target the mob. I never had that problem with wormhole, but my sample size is small.
Also, I think the power should have a very high mag, so as to affect almost anything. I do not think it should have any affects on AVs or GMs. I have never seen one of these stuck in 4 years steady play. Course I alt a lot and run 50 content maybe 10-20% time. Maybe somebody else sees these things stuck because they play AV content more. One of the problems with having it affect AVs is there is almost 100% possibility that some clever player will figure out a way to farm an AV with the silly thing lol.
To further ensure there is less of a chance for abuse, and that t is used as intended, the power should have a very long activation time like Pock D pass or LR TP.
Another suggestion is that a AoE patch could be layed down that will /unstuck everything in it. The patch would of course need to be large, since the purpose of it would be to get things that could not be targetable because they are stuck way deep in the terrain.
The other possible solution -
Quote:Okay, this may be a tangent. The problem with those types of commands is that it would require you to be able to target said stuck critter. Half the times, you can't because the critter is behind enough of the map wall. During these times, the only thing that might work is to get the critter to shift position using a ground drop patch like Bonfire or Freezing Rain, ie things with knock back or knock down.
So to add to your suggestions, instead of tp, have a ground drop patch do a /unstuck AOE to all targets within range.
we are talking about a solution to the mob in the wall. So, /unstuck the whole map. Everywhere, everything. Usable once every 3 days. (or just all NPCs?) the problem, of course, is that it has potential to be abused more, since its more powerful.
also, it may not fit quickly (require more coding) based on the game mechanics.
