So I Deleted my Rockin Robin character to remake her into a hero instead of praetorian like she was, now the name is no longer available. I figured perhaps someone picked it up(which i find kind of unlikely) but when i search ingame nothing came up.

....What the heck happened?

The same thing happened to Naughty Nadya's "Agent Liberty." Sometimes names just get locked, so delete with caution and/or check the name on another server.

Yeah I had a name and wanted to remake the toon (street justice). I delete him and then can't get the name back. I petition and they say the name is copyright. I note to them an alternate version is and not mine. They agree but say they can't do anything about it because they can't alter the filter. They then tell me to put it on the forums and ask a dev to deal with it. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Well that is just...crap. I suppose it could be copyright by the name of the song Rockin Robin but I mean if that were the case so many names wouldn't be available...

bah. How irritating.

I usually just google names now. If they belong to a comic book character I will not bother. It is annoying that you can still get these names and then get genericed.

I wonder what kind of deal NC made with Marvel et al. Seriously. Marvel did not create the name Apocalypse or many of the other names we can't use. Yet somehow they have been given the sole right to the name. As if. If we make a toon that looks like the namesake with similar powers then, by all means, gen. us; but this agreement has them just laying the smack down on us!

Maybe I should start doing that. I think if you're character doesnt look, act or have the same powers than it shouldn't get generic'd. This is just a little silly. I even tried on Exalted but Rockin Robin isn't available. I can get Rockin' Robin so I might just go with that..

Which is ironic, as the song is actually called "Rockin' Robin" with the apostrophe.

The last two names I googled were very frustrating (see my thread in player help for the long version) The 1st sounded like a copywritten character, even though the inspiration was from physics. When googled it was used to name a race in another game. Finally approved by GM. (Zerg)

The second was in my head for a few days, common english phrase, finally had to make a character. Gogled it this time. Was a character in a skit on Chappele show. I honestly didnt know. On the brightside Chappelle altered the spelling. I like Chappelle, but I have only seen 2 of his shows. To me the humor all seems to be the same, and I would need to take up serious smoking to be able to sit through the 2-3 seasons of that stuff. His black white supremacist was excellent, I must say. Anyways, after I googled it I cringed. (The english term is "Buck Nasty" Chappeles character "Buc Nasty" My character "Buk Nasty") Anyways, since I am running a giant white guy with Red hair who keeps trying to get into Longbow (and failing) and want to be a hero, and Chapelle has a black playa of low morals I think I m on solid ground.

But seriously, I think I am creative. Its just that as soon as you find something short, punchy, memorable, and fitting, google it. With all of human knowledge documented and at your fingertips there is a good chance some guy (like that hack Shakespear, he took my Puck!) has used it before.

I understand CoXs position. Its just that it gets frustrating sometimes. I made up a villain fr a champions game my wife was running (old school, tabletop, dice) I named the characte "Scourge" Not original, but very fitting. He had set out with the goal of becoming a scourge to humanity, greatest riminal of ll time, yadda yada. I made him in the city, ended up calling him "Scourge 23" ran him for 6 months, had billions in his build, with that dumb name.

I should make names in advance, but my problem is once I start working on a concept I drop all that I am doing until the character is made. Conversely, when I decide to make a new character I really want to get the concept done, and sometimes that seems to mean forcing the name too fast. This is only exascerbated by the name filter in CoX and the fact there there is 7 years worth of names already claimed on peoples accounts. (Many of whom will never log into the city again..)

Before everyone gets in a tizzy, is the name 'unavailable' or 'already in use' because there is a difference.

Already in use means someone else grabbed it. Unlikely but not impossible. Unavailable means a name is being blocked by the Devs. It could be that an in game NPC already has the name or that it is blocked for legal reasons.

To the OP, I have seen dozens of characters named after songs or lines from songs. I have a handful of them myself. I do not believe your choice is blocked due to it being from a song title.

If you had the name and just deleted the character and remade and within minutes the name was taken or not available, it seems much more likely that there was a momentary glitch. Have you tried it again?

It's unavailable not in use and yeah, I've been checking it the last few day's. I don't mind though, Rockin' Robin doesnt bother me.

If it's allowing Rockin' Robin, then it might be that the server hadn't let go of your deleted character's name by the time you tried to remake.

That's why agent liberty was locked down.

There needs to be some sort of law that states if a comic book character is dead (actually dead) and hasn't had an issue in 5 years then their name is up for grabs.

I mean, seriously, who the hell has even heard of Agent Liberty in a way other than your forum post?

Agent Liberty is featured in the World of New Krypton series from DC Comics. He has a cameo as George W. Bush's bodyguard during the summit with the New Kryptonian delegates. This is a recent title. (Within the last 3 years.)
