Helping a new player

Okay I finally convinced my wife to try CoH. It took Free to play, and us getting a second box, but it happened.

Sooo.. She has chosen an Nrg/Nrg blaster. Sigh. that part is just not negotiable, she has her reasons/storylines, and they are good ones. Game mechanics or not.

I have been a long time Brute player, and have made a few pretty solid tank runs. Recently I have been Blasting and Scrapping. I was hoping to be able to duo with her on a Scrapper, but I am getting kind of worried as the hour of character creation approaches.

I thought I should ask the experts. Do I need to run a Tank to manage agro for one Blaster? Even a KB crazy Nrg Nrg? We will be running at +0/x1. We will be running the new storyline content (I am not that familiar with it) We will be hitting all safeguards. I will try to convince her to do the level appropriate Task Forces. She has no interest in PUGs, but I have some MoHunter friends that I think will be glad to help. After 30 (when exp slows and the new content dwindles) we will probably run the old story arcs.

So, do I really need a Tank for this? ((If I do Dark/Invul would fit the team concept well, but I am flexible - Dark/Fire (er Dark Melee/Fire armor, why are you guys backwards lol) Tank might actually do enough damage and still Be Tanky on these settings?)) or can i get away with a Brute or Scrap?

You don't *need* a tank for anything per se, though if she's going to be blasting you probably want something melee focused that can take a bit more punishment, so a Scrapper, Brute or Tank would be fine; arguably some MM would also work.

KB isn't a problem as long as she doesn't keep attacking your targets and punting them away, so I'd advise you to pick something that you actually want to play rather than what you think you're going to need, otherwise you won't enjoy it.

You must have many alts, find out how she likes to play with them. Maybe she prefers to be upfront, fully buffed, rather than sat back shooting fish in a barrel.

He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.

I'm not worried about survivability. I have a trove of I/os, and have run Dark Melee/Invulnerable Brutes. i am sure a Dark Melee/Invulnerable Scrap, built right/run right, can take everything that is gonna happen pretty well. I am more interested in that uber powerful taunt that Tanks have. scrap challenge is a nasty insult to one person. Brute Taunt is horrid insult to a group of peeps. Tanker Taunt is insulting an entire prison gangs mothers and then crapping in their meal trays. They tend to forget the Blaster and wanna talk to you. That's more directly my question. How does the taunt mechanics vary? I rarely used it for my Brutes, and i never take it on my Scraps. And CoH titan red Tomax is still down.

Yes, lotsa alts. Mostly Brutes, some Tanks, Some Scraps, some Blasts, a few Doms. No buffers. lol.

Blue, if you're going to run a two man team with your wife but still want to put out some damage then my suggestion would be to go with a Fire/Dark Melee build. It will allow you to hold aggro, do considerable damage, heal yourself, and control endurance issues fairly well. Build it to use IO sets granting defense bonuses and it becomes quite dudrable.

In addition, Dark Melee offers quite a bit of control over dangerous mobs and some of the best single-target attacks available to tankers. If your wife is going the blaster route, she can safely destroy targets that you have aggroed.

Dark Melee also pairs well with Invulnerability and Willpower.

I think for a duo on 0/x1 a Brute should be fine to manage aggro. If you are experienced, you should be able to solo the size spawns a duo will generate, and remember a nrg/nrg blaster will have some mitigation as well. Whether they like it or not.

Really, if you want her to learn the game well, you don't want every single fight to consist of you run in, everything shoots at you for the whole fight, and she just blasts stuff in complete safety. She should get the occasional blaster thrill of having a bad guy come gunning for HER, and its drop them or faceplant. You might even want to deliberately allow this once in awhile, not fire off a Taunt, to avoid fights becoming spectator sports for her.

Good point Scientist. The cities design is pretty complex, and she might not learn that at all if I over-tanked. If I duo'd with her until 50 using a solid tank/herd then blast style she would never get to know her own agro control. I even keep a window up for NPC chat, so ambushes wouldnt even get her.

Nah, you just need to give her some assistance in staying alive, particularly when starting out, so she doesn't get frustrated. One good option would be....

Well, if buffers are out, all you really need is to be tougher than her. So I would not suggest a second blaster. I think a tank would be overkill for a duo for general playing at regular settings. If you decided to duo AV's, that's different.

Even all blasters can work. I play with my brother and his wife on Justice and we have an all-blaster team. We can take out any spawn faster than they can take us out. Then every one of us whips out Aid Other and/or Aid Self and we're ready for the next fight.
