Eventually they are roleplaying, or maybe were the entire time, the naughty school girl getting seduced by the teacher. The teacher is female and so is the student. The teacher is telling the student if you get an A you get a special reward nudge nudge.

It is true that recluse bears the responsibility for allowing him to be like this, all in the name of breaking the will of the helpless, but he seems to formulate his own plans quite well.
The way I look at it is there's basically 3 components to a person's evil: their intent/motives, the severity of the suffering/harm they inflict, and how widespread the suffering/harm is.

Obviously which of those a person places most significance on will dramatically affect who they consider the most evil overall.

For me intent is the least of those - I more or less define evil as what someone is willing to do to achieve their goals. The indifference Nemesis displays as he wipes out an entire world - that the inhabitants are of no consequence to him at all - is a different type of evil than Phipps' sadism, but it's no less terrible in my view.

One reason a lot of evil generals can to a flip to at least being respected even after killing lots of heroic characters is that they at least showed some class, they fought near equals and did so in open combat. phips orchestrates the poisoning of small kids he is a different, abominable kind of evil. its the same visceral reaction many have have to seeing some hurt a small dog or child, full on moral repulsion. I can sort of respect recluse, even if he does do the idiotic evil darwinist thing, he "picks on people his own size" but Phipps is a stain of humanity (as is midnight master). In fact, id go so far as to say that like agg said, phipps wants to be a monster. recluse has a goal, being the strongest and surrounding himself with the strongest, he does evil in persuit of a goal, but evil is not his goal, if he thought about things differently, he probably could do good as well, phipps is cruel to the core, it is his goal.
Most of the bad things Nemesis has done probably have included in there somewhere stuff on a similar level to the bad things Phipps has done (or incited). e.g. the poisoning of small kids - given Nemesis' weaponry tends to involve fire, explosives, and poison gas, it's pretty likely his enterprises have included the poisoning of children somewhere along the way - he may not have specifically decided that he'd like to poison some children today, but he's gone ahead with mass murder knowing that children would be poisoned as part of it. And those children will have suffered just as much as the kid(s) Phipps poisoned.

The main question here is whether the scale and indifference of Nemesis' evil trumps the sadistic delight Phipps takes in his own.

(Personally I rate Nemesis as the most evil, as the suffering of the victims is pretty similar in either case, but he's got *way* more victims and not just due to success rates, his plans necessitate it - the reasons why he's inflicting that suffering do nothing to reduce it. I think Phipps is *nastier*, but his overall evil is dwarfed by Nemesis)

  7. For me the priorities are/were (more or less in order):

Solar Flare - as others say, game changer
Tornado - goes from a power I only break out when things have already gone south to one I can use as often as it's available (endurance permitting)
Explosive Blast - don't have to put as much effort into positioning etc anymore (never actually had complaints on my Energy Blast characters, but that's largely because of aforementioned extra effort in that area)
Blaster Dark Blast Torrent - as above
MM power pool Bonfire - I'm actually thinking of keeping it as KB on my blaster as he already has lots of AoE so I'd maybes miss the get-away-from-me aspect (especially now it's not *totally* OP), but for my MM I'd prefer to keep them in the patch for the damage.

Those are the main ones for me. If I can be bothered continuing to farm the trial, or spend the non-trivial amounts of inf, I'll maybe add some to stuff like M30, Shockwave, etc, but those are nice-to-have rather than must-have for me. And adding it to Crane Kick would make me a sad (kung fu) panda - I love the KB on that one, just for the visual.

If anything, performance is a far bigger concern as, historically, the Mac client has performed like crap and got a lot worse when Going Rogue hit, regardless of whatever I set my graphics settings to. I've literally had 7 FPS with minimum graphic settings, even though my computer meets or exceeds recommended specs. You can give me a ten year subscription and everything the store ever releases to me for free and I won't touch this game if it continues to run like crap for no good reason.

Since it runs native rather than being emulated, I'm hoping the Windows client performs far better and I'm installing it right now to give this another go. Thank you install disks for saving me from having to download 3 gigabytes plus patches.

So, in other words, you didn't read my post and assumed I wanted the VIP experience without paying for it?
In fairness, only one sentence of your original post dealt with Mac client performance issues. The majority of it dealt with the discouragement of a former subscribed player trying to enjoy the game (or at least determine if enjoyment can still be had) while under the restrictions placed on a free account - i.e. not having access to the VIP paid features. And the majority of *that* dealt specifically with IOs and trying to play previously IO'd characters using SOs.

It's not entirely unreasonable for people to come away from that thinking you're another returning player wanting their old subscriber experience for free, even in the presence of disclaimers stating you're not interested in that argument.

  11. I have characters filling the default slots on Victory, Virtue, Freedom and Exalted. I've bought (or VIP-rewarded) and filled extra slots on each of them except for Exalted.

I'd move my Victory and Exalted characters over to Virtue and/or Freedom if doing so didn't lose me my character names, though in the case of Victory it would be with some regret as I've been there since beta. Both of those servers are pretty close to dead at the times I play (I gather Victory picks up a bit about 2 hours after I go to bed) and I dislike soloing, so that'd be my incentive, but not at the cost of having to pick new names for characters I've had for years.

If you belong to a SG you can get in game buffs from the empowerment station that last an hour.
Amplifiers do not allow your character to do something "super awesome omg I am now 50."

These are less "pay to win" than the xp boosters.
Like a lot of internet slang, "pay to win" is not necessarily used to the strictest definition of the phrase. Its common meaning is "pay to be more powerful" or "pay to win more easily", but those just don't sound quite as snappy.

Not sure if your terribly serious reply is because you thought my post was serious, but in case it is: mine definitely wasn't.
  15. It's like the devs get off on being withholding.
  16. I rarely solo - when I do I tend to get bored after two or three missions. If I can't find/form a team fairly quickly I'll usually just log off and play something else rather than start soloing.

I'm actually not a very social person though - I almost never go out, and arguably have no friends - so I'm not sure it's the social element per se that I'm after in teaming.

I think it's more the interplay of multiple (player controlled) characters, the extra variability and unpredictability that brings, the usually faster pace (though I'm not a fan of the speed run), and all the synergies that can develop, both through powerset interaction and different tactics people bring.

It's also kinda why, while I'm only really interested in teaming when I play CoH, I'm not so keen on the trials. Adding more people starts out making things more interesting and complex when teams are smaller, but after a certain number it just turns into a big generic mush. Adding one more person to a team of four can change the dynamic in interesting ways and potentially let the team handle significantly stronger challenges (or indeed, hindering their progress if the new addition doesn't work out so well). Adding one more person to a league of twenty, eh, it's not even noticeable, however good/bad a player they are (unless they've gone to the extreme of deciding to troll the league by deliberately triggering trial fail conditions).

And Supernatural is an example of that I think. I gather season 5 was the originally planned stopping point for the show, and while I more or less enjoyed season 6 (haven't seen 7 yet, stupid UK tv) there's definitely a part of me that thinks they should maybe have called it a day after 5, ended on a high note so to speak.

(but Supernatural is definitely worth checking out, it's a lot of fun)
  18. *obligatory rant lamenting the cancellation of Firefly*
  19. So I just saw the in-game motd telling us about the summit and directing us to the third party website to take the survey... and then reminding us not to visit third party websites.

In any case, I ignored the advice and took the survey

To be honest, I was taking it that for the purposes of this thread that everyone quitting is an acceptable outcome. It's why I bothered to log in and post my own - I'd not advocate for them normally because I know the only way(s) to make them happen likely would result in lots of people quitting, but in this thread that's not an issue.

Fwiw, I couldn't help but give it at least a passing thought once you asked, though with the disclaimer that this is indeed just passing thought, and I'd not actually expect the devs to go ahead with it:

    1) Obvious answer, which is the really draconian hate, burning hate option: the new merged super-server has a higher character cap of, say, 50 characters. You get to pick which characters you transfer to the super-server, and the rest are just lost.

    2) Slightly less draconian solution, but probably as much hate, burning hate (for slightly different reasons): the new super-server does not have a cap on the number of character slots you can have (or it's high enough to accommodate max slots on every current server combined) but only, say 50 slots are enabled to start with (or some lower value modified by slots purchased/earned under the old servers). All your characters carry over, but you have to pick which 50 are initially enabled - to enable the others you'd need to buy character slots much like vip-switched-to-premium players do now (moneys for teh game!).

    3) Kinda oddball convoluted solution: cap of 50 characters, but the excess characters aren't deleted, they're held in a kinda holding pattern. You can use what are currently server transfers to swap an active enabled character with an inactive disabled character (VIPs still getting their free "transfer" each month).

As I say, wouldn't seriously expect any of that to happen , and I'd certainly not bother to argue for any of it in a serious discussion thread on the subject, but since we're doing this things that'd get you hated thread, there's my barely thought out answer (if anyone bothers to shoot those down I won't take the time to defend them)

Oh, I haven't given it that level of thought - I'd need to be in a position to be making it happen before I put in that kind of effort
  23. Most of the stuff that I wanted - but numerous people were strongly opposed to - have already come to pass (side switching and market merge being the main ones). The only things left that I can think of that fall into this category are:

    1) Non-unique character names. I'm not sure I'd do it exactly the way Champions does, but definitely something along those lines.

    2) Contingent on 1) happening: merge all the servers into one.

I'll go get myself fitted for that noose now.
  24. Personally I think they should wait 3-6 months after they stop being available as a Tier 9 VIP reward then just sell them straight on the market, like a normal costume set. No special events, or games of chance, or other hoops to jump through; just make it a normal purchase. Based on the duration it's been reward program exclusive so far that would mean the T9VIP gets to use the set for about a year before the peasantry, which seems like plenty of privilege to me.

(I say this as a Tier 9 VIP)
  25. I can't think of any small changes that would make me quit the game outright.

However, I'd probably drop my subscription and stop buying anything from the store if they introduced IO sets (or similar) that were exclusive to the store and couldn't also be earned through in-game activity. Or if stuff like powersets were made exclusive to super packs. Basically things that contribute to character builds and the means we obtain them.
