However, my example regarding the study in the library fits within the realm of TWIXTs study (regarding, specifically, the misinterpretation prior to the explanation/debriefing). There was no waiver prior to the administering of the experiment (which is why the one lady ran out of the library...she didn't know she was a part of a study and came to different, more frightening, conclusion). In this way the misrepresentation is the failure to mention that an experiment is taking place, most people assume they are not participating in experiments during everyday life.

The other quote to which I was responding is germane here. If there was no reasonable expectation of harm (and harm gets defined VERY broadly by IRBs), then this would be approvable research. If there was predictable harm, it becomes more difficult to approve.

I think that what Myers proposed (and he had to propose something; even if he proposed it as exempt research, it had to go through a separate board who had to review it and make sure it qualified as exempt status, based on what's been posted to these forums) would have predictably led to a stress response on the part of those he targeted. I've been at other universities where studies evoking stress responses received heightened scrutiny (I saw one bounced because the person used 42-degree water instead of 45-degree water to create physiological stress...).

What about consent from NCsoft? While I don't think there's anything in the EULA expressly forbidding the use of the game servers for research purposes, I would think that if you're using their service and publishing a paper after your findings that there's a reasonable expectation to inform the owners of the servers.

Admittedly, it's possible that he had gotten the go-ahead, since I haven't seen anything about it one way or the other.

Also, how does this paper relate to the member created content portion of the EULA?

    CoH Locking up

I've been having a problem with CoH locking up. The screen flashes once, then the program simply stops responding and I have to return to the desktop and close it from the taskbar. Until I15, this would only happen maybe once a week, but since then it's gotten to a point where it's making the game almost unplayable, since I can get maybe one mission completed and I have to restart the game. Every now and again I'll get a lucky break and it won't do it at all, but there doesn't seem to be any pattern to this.

That said, I have yet to notice the problem if Steam isn't running, but because the problem does happen randomly, this could be a fluke. For what it's worth, CoH is also the only program that this happens to.

I get that a lot, actually. I blame it on my training as a draftsman. I handwrite in all caps, and generally prefer it to standard upper and lower case when reading a font that is supposed to look handwritten. Besides, it's comicky.

DOESN'T MEAN I LIKE IT ALL THE TIME, THOUGH.

    My UI

I hadn't realized until just now how crowded it is, though admittedly it's a bit different for each character. I think I need to get my hands on a widescreen monitor, though.
  5. /Traps can hit the ranged cap without breaking a sweat, and bring a lot of other typed and positional defences along for the ride. My Sonic/Traps is capped to Melee, Energy, and Negative, and 30+ to everything other than Psi, with 50% resist to smashing and lethal for good measure. And I'm on the low end of the spectrum.

Play around with /traps a bit, and see what you can make for yourself. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.
  6. How do the Carnies "work"? Are they all slaved to Vanessa Devore's/Giovanna Scaldi's personality like drones or psychic puppets, individuals with a mind link to Vanessa, or something else entirely?

On the same vein, what exactly is Vanessa/Giovanni doing with the "souls" she powers herself with? Does she draw her energy from inducting a new member and siphoning some of their "essence", or by ripping it out whole and consuming it? Is that what the blue flash is when the carnies fall? Also, is it just my imagination, or is the spectral figure within the flash a skeleton with boobs? Inquiring minds want to know.

I just got back to CoH today after a short vacation, and noticed this. I appreciate them wanting to improve the sound effects, but I think they need to go back and beef them up a bit. A 200 pound guy superjumping into the ocean from 30 storeys up should not sound like somebody dropping a carrot in a pot of soup.

Hardly gamebreaking, I realize, but it just doesn't seem right to me.
  8. I like CoV's music much more than CoH, but by and large I leave it off to keep background noise to a minimum while talking on TS or Skype, or while watching a movie or something. Generally, it's sort of an annoying distraction, particularly while going through the city and hearing only tiny snippets because you're following a neighborhood boundary or something.

My favourite in game is probably from the Double Down neighborhood in St. Martial.

Also, if you've bought the Personal Soundtrack Shirt from ThinkGeek, the "Super Hero Rescue" track that comes loaded with the sound pack is the Atlas Park theme, though with slightly different instrumentation.

Yeah, I would just LOOOOOVE to play the game then. (whups forgot to emote sarcasm... my bad) If you've been ingame this long and cant wrap your head around the time ingame... meh; lost cause.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is why I don't like posting my ideas. I love CoH/V, my ideas don't reflect things I want changed because I don't like them, I just want to help contribute positive ideas to the game I've loved for 5 years. I ask for discussion ideas or something constructive. I can understand if something isn't possible, I play the game, not design it, but I get responses that only seek to disprove and deem my ideas bad/unnecessary. Every other MMO has rain, and none of them obliterate your computer, I just wish for some more positive responses, instead of variations of "Can't be done, bad idea, what are you thinking?!" *sigh*

    [/ QUOTE ]

The problem is that after 5 years, many of these suggestions have been discussed, re-discussed, had discussions on the first discussion, re-re-discussed... People see the same suggestions pop up that have already been vetoed by the devs. Some people seem to expect newcomers to have an instinctive knowledge of what's been already talked to death about.

That said, it's always a good idea, before posting a new suggestion, to use the search tool to see what's been said before on the subject in order try and avoid repeating a discussion that's already been had.

With specific bearing on the weather effects, it has been brought up in the past. I don't remember specifically which dev did say it, but basically if they were to go through the effort of coding in a new system to bring about weather, they would want it to have something to it that makes it more than just eye candy. The problem is, they also don't want to make something that either buffs or penalizes people to the point where they feel they need to be fighting in a certain weather pattern to get their full potential. So far, they haven't found a way to reconcile the two.

As for life time day-night scale, I have to agree that I would rather not have to wait until RL evening to be able to run my King's Row CoT hunts or what have you. It feels to me like this is a change for the sake of a change, and it's probably something that the devs don't want to risk annoying half of the player base for something that's neither highly demanded, nor a significant gameplay improvement.

I, and most of the people I know, just turn the filter off.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That's fine for chat and such, but when you're making an MA arc you've got no choice but to follow the guidelines. This means you can't, for example, talk about a "snatch and grab" operation. Honestly, it would be nice if arcs with potentially offensive language like that would simply be flagged as "potentially containing offensive content", then have an option to allow or disallow these in the searches.

It's irritating to be prevented from telling the stories I want the way I want to tell them, just because a homograph of the word might have at one point been offensive. Honestly, I probably never would have known "nip" was a slur against the Japanese had it not been brought up here. I've similarly learned of "spook" for a person of african descent through the word filter. Seriously, this thing seems to be serving a counter-purpose anyway.

Poison Trap isn't really worth proccing anymore IMO. Going from memory here but I think there were reports that frankenslotting hold IOs with accuracy improves the accuracy on the initial hold component, which is about the only part that's worthwhile anymore, control-wise.

I think that's about it. If I missed anything hopefully someone will fill in the blanks and/or correct me.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I would disagree about procs not being worthwhile in /traps, since you can get 3 or so chances for the procs to fire, but I would say that they're not the be-all-and-end-all that they may have been once. The Lockdown: Chance for +mag hold in particular, I find quite nice. Since you can slot for accuracy, recharge, and hold duration, and still have the ability to put one or two procs in it, I don't think it needs to be an either/or situation either.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is the fact that there's already one power in the game that does add a new damage type to attacks: Enchantment of Serafina. Instant psi damage, perfect for taking on the honoree in his "Unstoppable" phase.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I just checked the information for Enchantment of Seraphina both on City of Data and in-game, and it doesn't add a damage type. It simply increases the damage of psychic attacks without increasing the damage of any other type of attack (+% strength to psionic damage for 1 m 0s on target). So, unless both City of Data and the in-game information are wrong (I've never used it so I don't know), you're reading too much into the description and not enough into the game effects (which actually matter).

    [/ QUOTE ]

I just tested it and it seems you're right. I suppose it was a bit much to expect the power description to actually describe what the power does.
  14. Basically, anything that's within the apartment at the time of thirst. Usually, that means water, diet coke, or milk. Lately there's been an increasing appearance of Kool-Aid, because I'm just too squeamish to inject sugar directly into my veins.
  15. One thing I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is the fact that there's already one power in the game that does add a new damage type to attacks: Enchantment of Serafina. Instant psi damage, perfect for taking on the honoree in his "Unstoppable" phase.

If Fleeting_Whisper's suggestion to have the power act like Targeting Drone and Sniper Rifle doesn't work as it should, it might be worth seeing if the code for the Enchantment could be used. Given the fact that as it stands, it's probably a straight +damage to all powers, I think it would be necessary to add these into a "Trick Ammo" set- probably a blaster secondary, trading damage from the secondary to make for stronger primary attacks.
  16. To this "lowest common denominator" garbage, I say take a few design courses. The first thing you'll be taught is that accessibility is key. If the intent of the design doesn't come across within the first 3 seconds, then you need to work at clarifying your design. Given the number of people here who seem to be agreeing that there should be some indication of which door is which, I would say that it's not the lowest common denominator, but rather the average common denominator who find this to be a problem.

I play this game to be a superhero/villain, not to play "Let's Make a Deal". Call me dense, but I've never spent enough time in Cimerora to figure out the pattern of the doors. Hell, even if each door was marked with a different symbol- Star, Moon and Sun, for instance- at least it would be a reference point to differentiate the doors. They managed it in Pocket D, why is it like trying to get blood from a stone to get a little user-friendliness here?
  17. Rather than limiting the recipes to increments of 5, what I would rather do is have the option to bid on a range of levels for one recipe. There's plenty of times where I want a recipe "X", but don't really care if it was level 40, 50, or anything in between.

So instead of having to choose "Well 44s are going cheapest at the moment", or placing several bids in a hope that one fills, and the rest don't, I could put in a bid for a level 40-50 recipe X, walk away, and if anything in that range comes up for bid at my price point I get it just as surely as if I had bid there.
  18. Do I really have to choose between rewards and story? I enjoy the chance to tell my tales, but I also like to know that someone's reading them.

To that end, I would probably stop using the MA if they took out all rewards and left it just "Story for story's sake". If the people who are looking for a good story and some rewards are all avoiding the MA, why write for them? Similarly, if all I was going to get was a big map filled with mobs, and nothing more than "Go kill" as the storyline, I would probably stop using it in that case, too.

At the end of the day, I can't help but feel that they're fairly close to the balance point right now. I would like to see more teams running AE missions than farms, but that's as much on the players either to stop farming or start more story teams as it is on the devs. Probably moreso, since there's only so far the devs can go without ruining the whole deal.

  22. Yeah, I like magpies. It's always fun when you find one who's learned to mimic noises that just shouldn't come from a bird. When I was younger, we had a park nearby where a pair of magpies were nesting. One would come by our yard fairly often, and it had the strangest repertoire of sounds. It barked like a dog, it laughed like a kid, and it also whirred like a garage door. Strange.
  23. So, it's a nice day out, and I decide to open the windows and patio door in my apartment so it doesn't get overwhelmingly hot. Plus, since my computer is directly adjacent to the door, I get a nice cool breeze and I can look outside. So, I'm on playing CoH, trying to get my Dark/Stone brute to 22 when I notice that every time I hit Smite, there's a noise coming from outside.

I turn to look, and there on my balcony railing, I'm being watched by a magpie. The bird is looking in, watching me play CoH, and mimicking the sounds that my dark melee attacks are making (apparently, the council rifles aren't as interesting.) I tried to grab my video camera to get video of it, but the movement startled the bird away.

So, if one day, you're outside and suddenly you hear Dark Melee sound effects... Yeah, that's my bad.

    Sonic/Traps

I have a level 50 Sonic/Traps who is also my main villain. I find him to be an awful lot of fun, and despite the PGT nerf, he's an absolute monster while soloing. EBs are generally no trouble at all, and I'm currently working out a way to solo AVs. (So far, using MA, I've taken Bobcat to the point where she hits unstoppable, which then stalls me long enough that she's able to kill me. I'm not sure if I should try a different AV, or just keep plugging away.)

One thing I find is that Siren's Song is less useful in practice than I had expected it to be in making the character. Between Acid Mortar and Caltrops, your own attacks will end up waking up your enemies. If you decide not to use them, then your trip mine does less damage than it could. However, for a while I was getting some use out of it by using it to set up Time Bomb. I found, though, that I was generally progressing slower by relying on Time Bomb than I was with -res debuffs +Trip Mines

My opening sequence is typically Amplify>Seekers>Acid Mortar>PGT>PPP Soul Drain>Trip Mine>Howl. Despite the nerf, I still find a huge amount of utility from PGT, and even more so since I've gotten my hands on a Lockdown: Chance for +2 Mag Hold. Between choking, coughing enemies and high defence, incoming fire is not much of a concern while dropping a Trip Mine.

Alternately, there's always the option to drop a minefield against really hard targets. I have a friend who gets a kick out of it every time I leave an EB clinging desperately to life from a stack of 13 mines going off in their face.

For PPPs, Black Scorpion offers a solid choice. You're spitting distance from the softcap to Smashing and Lethal damage when combined with FFG, and softcapped S/L defence will protect you from an awful lot of melee attacks. I went for a positional defence build, and avoided Scorpion Shield in favour of a resistance shield as an IO mule. I have about 35% to melee and AoE and 47% to Ranged, as well as about 30% to all typed defences. One advantage to this is that there are a lot of sets for defence that this combination can take advantage of which others can't/don't. As a result, you can rack up positional defences fairly cheaply.

I've also found the combo to be fairly good on endurance. Stamina is optional (Yes, I know, stamina is always optional. It's more optional on a Sonic/Traps), particularly if you build a bit of +recovery in through IOs and slot some endrdx.

In all, you could definitely do a lot worse than Sonic/Traps. It's fun to play, and enough of a rarity that you're unlikely to see another in the course of your path from 1-50. There's a learning curve involved to be sure, but if you can get past it, you'll find yourself playing a fun, strong, unique character which will give you plenty of stories to tell your friends about.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'd say that 99 times out of 100, at least in North America, the phrase "bully for you" is used sarcastically such as to mean "whoop-dee-freakin'-doo". Just like "good for you". I see nothing wrong with your usage, unless you meant something completely different.
