Understatement of the century. That and IIRC the company behind it is currently getting it's rear end sued off by one of the copyright groups. So it's days are probably numbered anyhow.
  2. No specific advice on models but I'm not sure you can get a UM-capable laptop for that price. The chart you can see here gives a comparative ranking to pretty much all current video cards available. For UM, you want something at the very top end of the mobile chips. Whether you can get that at your budget I'm not certain but I doubt it. In any case *AVOID* Intel graphics chips like the plague. Whatever you do buy, make certain it has an ATI or Nvidia chip in it for graphics. Intel graphics are a joke and will definitely not give you good performance in CoH. And they absolutely won't do UM at all.

I'm not very techy, and I don't know about registries or what HijackThis is, but here's the situation:

The game works just fine on my 4-year old desktop, even though it's pretty junky by this point.

However, I just got a brand-new Alienware laptop as part of my school program and CoH was the first and only game I've installed on it. I was looking forward to running in Ultra Mode for sure!

The updater goes just fine and the patches get made... but once I hit Next the game never progresses past the blue Loading bar.

I don't know the exact specs of the laptop offhand, but I'm running Windows 7.

Any ideas out there? Sorry I can't provide more in-depth technical info, but if you tell me where to look I'll post what I can.

    Thanks!
Run CoHHelper and post up the results for us. That will help us know what you have. But my first suggestion would be trying an update of your video drivers. It's entirely possible the ones the system came with are out of date and thus may be your issue.
  4. That's not water. There are no water effects for bases. However some enterprising sort figured out that Slow Fields create a shimmer effect similar to water and thus with proper positioning and planning, one can create something akin to the illusion of it.
  5. Objective Feedback: If you're 'lucky' enough to get hit with a recharge bug, the buff can be stacked via the walk bug.
  6. Hooray for simple solutions! Now go stomp villains! (Or heroes if you prefer.)
  7. I believe you're going to need to set CoH and all it's shortcuts to run as Administrator. You can do this by opening the properties of the item and checking that option on the compatibility tab. Alternatively, you can download the intaller from the CoH site and install via the web. That will get you a fully patched version and it should set all permissions and whatnot as required for it to run.
  8. Well they did recently announce some changes to the connection ports used. That might be part of it. Make sure any software firewalls you have on your system aren't blocking you as well as any hardware firewalls such as on your router are open as well for this. Opening a ticket with Support would also be a decent idea.
  9. Video drivers are the most likely culprit. You can run CoHHelper and paste the results here. That will give us some useful info as well.
  10. I can't recall hearing of any issues with those drivers but I'm on ATI so I can't offer any first-hand experience in the matter.
  11. Well with I17, UM and the upcoming GR, the game has gotten a bit of a facelift and a fair amount of the graphics code has been updated along with it. Intel graphics have never been terribly good and haven't gotten better with age. The Devs have made efforts to make the game work on Intel hardware but I guess there are limits to what they can do to make the new code run on such old hardware. You can try contacting Support or (I believe) The Television and see what they can do and suggest.
  12. Torrynt, kindly run CoHHelper and paste the results here. It will give us some more info to work with. Also, a bit more info concerning when this issue appeared might prove useful along with any other info you think might be of value.
  13. What counts most for UM is the video card. While CPU and memory are certainly important for overall performance, the GPU you get is key. If the GPU can't handle UM, it doesn't really matter what the rest of the system looks like, you won't get UM. But provided it was paired with a good GPU, the other specs you mention should be solid.

If it is still in warranty, point their techs to this thread, they can read it even though they can't post. They'll see why it appears to be Hardware related just from seeing things that should have an effect NOT have an effect or not be accessible (Ultra Mode settings in Safe Mode for example).

Sorry, but that's the way it looks to me.
Regrettably, I can't think of any reason to disagree. Given everything that's been tried, it should be fixed by now.

Check your warranty to be sure. Otherwise, sorry dude.

Any suggestions for a new card?
Given that you were infected and the CoH helper is still acting odd, you might consider a reinstall of the OS. Drastic I know but sometimes even the best cleaners don't or can't undo all the damage viruses do. It's possible you still have some errors or other OS damage that only a clean install will fix. Whether it will fix CoH is a whole other question.

For a card suggestion, I personally am using a 5850 made by XFX and I'm loving it. Be sure whatever you do decide to get will fit in your case and that you have sufficient power for it. The newer cards are power-hungrier than the old ones as well as longer so power and space are important considerations.
  15. Yeah, port forwarding is completely unneeded here. A NAT firewall should have no issue handling this for you. Port forwarding is more for connections from the outside that need to be routed to a specific machine behind the firewall. These connections are usually externally initiated, meaning you didn't ask for them to happen. This would include things like having a web server running behind your firewall. The connections are initiated by the outside users who want to see your web page. The firewall in this case forwards the traffic to the web server for resolution as opposed to say, your desktop or laptop. When you connect to CoH, you initiate the traffic and connections and the router is smart enough to follow along and see that all traffic related to that connection is routed correctly. If your wife joins in the fun, the router is again smart enough to recognize what traffic is for you and what is for her.
  16. Jade Warrior, this entry:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

makes me think you may have an infection. I'd suggest running a scan of your system with something like Malwarebytes and see what it finds. Whether that is the cause of your issue is unknown but if you are infected, it can't hurt to get cleaned.
  17. I hate stumpers too T_J. Whatever it is, it's pretty funky.
  18. The main things I could suggest, other than wait for the devs to fix the leak, would be to try turning off any non-essential services and background programs. That will free up a bit more in the way of resources. And if it doesn't exactly fix the issue, perhaps it will at least extend the playtime between crashes a bit. And it doesn't hurt to contact the Devs, Support and/or file bug reports when possble to help them trace the issue down.

I'll offer on other suggestion though I am hesitant to do so. I saw another player post here about having leak issues and using a program called Memokit to aleviate the issue. Supposedly, the program was able to contain or control the memory leakage and prevent the inevitable crashing. I have no personal experience with it and can give no more reccomendation than it supposedly fixed someone else. There's a recent forum thread on it if you'd like to find it. But YMMV and it isn't free that I'm aware of so it may or may not be of use and interest to you.
  19. Hm, ok so Crossfire does have some limits I see. Mainly that the cards have to be of the same basic series like say 5800. But provided the first two digits match, any combo is supposedly possible. Interesting to know. Although with no Crossfire support in game as yet, it's also perfectly useless for CoH.

Chaos reigned at the Mighty Mart today when a set of infant sextuplets were left momentarily unsupervised and consumed an entire case of Big Jack's Miracle Grow Baby Formula. It took the combined efforts of many city heroes to subdue and change the overgrown infants. A special nod goes out to Captain Pacifier for his exceptional heroism today.

ATI Crossfire definitely allows the two GPUs to be different models, but Crossfire is not available at all for CoH... yet.
I was under the impression both SLI and Crossfire required the GPUs to be identical. But I've never tried to run either one so...
  22. CoH PhysX is the old Aegia PhysX which is NOT the current Nvidia PhysX. So the ONLY way to have a PhysX card help you would be to have one of the old Aegia cards. Nvidia cards don't support the old PhysX so they do you no good in CoH as such. If you were playing a game that used the Nvidia PhysX, then that second card would get utilised. In CoH, it won't.
  23. Possible frame buffer issue. Basically, the video card's memory isn't flushing out properly so 'old' frames showing things you did previously are hanging around in video memory and I'd guess when the system requests a screenshot, that old data is getting passed instead of the current frame being displayed on your screen. A more usual symptom I've heard is old frames getting displayed briefly when exiting the game. Not really much you can do other than perhaps update video drivers and/or lower game settings. I thiink it is usually an indicator that you're taxing the card and it's thus having issues with clearing it's buffers in a timely manner.
  24. Ya, good point indeed. If UM is the goal, then a PSU upgrade is probably going to be required to have the juice to run an upper-end card. I suppose case space should be mentioned as well. Not sure of the space that case has for a card but the top-end cards run 10"-12" long or so. So be sure whatever you get will fit. 5770s which will do UM fine on a budget I hear are around 9"-10" IIRC.
