There're already plenty of successful counter-posts to this, but thought I'd add my 2-cents.
Quote:Some have called you on your figures, but, regardless - it still represents paying players who deserved to be treated with respect. The devs tried to come up with a significantly different pvp experience with the hopes of drawing in new players while blatantly ignoring the existing pvpers. The fact is, from the time that PvP was added to the game in May 2005's Issue Number 4: Colosseum, to the so called "PvP Disaster" that was Issue 13 in December 2008, the Player-Versus-Player population never rose above single digit percentages.
I say that's exactly what the original quote said *shouldn't* happen; this thread is bang-on topic.
I'd also say that was Paragon's SOE moment for PvPers. How long will it take for Paragon to admit they shouldn't have allowed this? -

So i was in rv a few days ago doing evil things on mm and along comes a scrapper , scrapper wallops me a little realises im not a complete noob and am in bg mode , by which time i have applyed all my debuffs and about ready to start wailing myself and his heavy gets into fight abd takes my hp down to nothing , so i pop a couple of greens , at which point scrapper starts calling me all sorts noob this noob that and said i am rubbish pvp because i used inspers
imo inspers are in the game for all to use, there fore its fair if you wanna have a go at me im fine with you using inspers when yer hp is low same as i can do same till im dead
my question is am i a player wuth lower pvp skill lvl becuase i used inspers i dont believe so , i would say i was better player for being prepared, oh btw i killed the scrapper once more after aswell using no inspers

Don't listen to a word he says. He's the noob and was just whinging since he didn't get a kill. Best to /ignore him and get on with it. -

in all honestly i think server transfers have ruined the game but i can also see why the devs did it to make more money........
[/ QUOTE ]
That could turn into a catch-22 if it's actually happening that way. Sure, they'll make money short-term with the transfers. But if the PvPers that won't spend money to transfer get too bored/annoyed, they may must cancel their subscriptions. Could cost them more money long term.
What could fix it is if they merge servers or make them all seemless, but that'll certainly annoy those that paid to transfer if it happens too soon. -
Sorry for the newbie-ish question, but is containment in effect if the hold hasn't broken through the target's mag protection? That is, if it takes two applications of hold to actually hold the target, do you get containment after the first or second hold?
Thanks! -
I've a dark/dark cor, though I wouldn't be able to make regular nights. I should be on tonight. Send a shout if you see me.

Really, the more I think about this the less I like it. I can see why this would work for the US, but I honestly don't think it'll do any good here.
I don't see casual PvPers as switching servers for PvP. (I see casual PvPers as those that like to PvE as well, not that they're any less good at PvP than hardcore PvPers, who I see as those who pretty much exclusively PvP. Again, casual vs harcore in the context of this post doesn't have anything to do with skill or ability at PvP, but the ratio of PvE to PvP gameplay.)
Casual PvPers will certainly have made friends that don't PvP who won't move, may be members of supergroups that won't move, already have a name they may not be able to transfer, etc. Why would they switch servers when they're involved with a community that does more than just PvP? They'd lose their identity. I just don't see the promise of a kick-[censored] PvP community as reason enough for the casual PvPer to move servers.
Accepting the assumption that the French and German servers are the least PvP-populated, if their PvPers were happy to choose a server purely based on PvP regardless of language, they would already be playing on Defiant or Union since these servers supposedly have many more PvPers. So I also don't see French and German PvPers as switching over to Union or Defiant if one them were named 'the' EU PvP server.
So that leaves just the English-speaking, hardcore PvPers as possible server-switchers.
For the EU, that's just two servers. For the US, it's 11. I can see why the US would flag one as the PvP server: it would allow hardcore PvPers and SGs to transfer and one server to really develop a kick-[censored] PvP community. Spread across 10 servers, I can see this would make a significant increase on the server chosen for PvP. At the same time, I don't see PvP on the remaining servers as being hurt, because I don't see hardcore PvPers as making up the majority of PvPers; their migration from any one server shouldn't really have a huge negative impact of PvP on their server.
That brings us to the EU severs. Again, we have two likely servers for the choice. One would be flagged PvP, the other would be the one hardcore PvPers will migrate from. Again, I don't see the casual PvPers leaving, just the hardcore ones and their SGs. And again, I don't think they make up a majority of PvPers.
So what will be the impact of flagging one as 'the' PvP server in Europe? Not much, I don't think. Initially, at least. Some (most?) hardcore PvPers will leave the 'other' server. Is that a large number? I don't know. I don't partake in big PvP events; I play too casually, an hour here, two there. But I guess these events are what would be affected the most, postively on the chosen server, negatively on the other. But I do think it'll hurt PvP in the long run on, even more so on the server flagged PvP.
Why? When I first started CoV, I had no interest in PvP. It wasn't until the higher levels that I wanted to try it out. If one server had been designated as PvP when I first joined, I would've avoided it. What percentage of new players are interested in PvP from the get-go? I'd guess (possibly incorrectly) fewer than those that aren't interested in it. So flagging a server as PvP will make it less attractive to those that aren't into PvP in the first place, and I think in the long term that will be worse for PvP than leaving things as is, where PvP is relatively evenly spread.
All that said, I think the best option for increasing PvP populations remains making the PvP zones cross-server, and I think that'd be well worth the dev time to do. (Which would probably not work in the US, 'cause it'd put too many players in one zone! They'd have to put the servers into PvP groups for this.) -
[ QUOTE ]
Who cares if new players wont have pvp.
[/ QUOTE ]
Eh? Um... the new players? And existing players that care about increasing the PvP community? Just because you don't care if it causes confusion/trouble for newcomers doesn't mean no one else cares or that it doesn't affect anyone.
[ QUOTE ]
I doubt there is any action on the french and the german servers anyways?
[/ QUOTE ]
And you base this on, what? Even accepting that there are fewer PvPers on these servers than Union or Defiant (and I have no idea one way or the other about that), that's even more reason not to push them away from their own server. If a server is named 'the' PvP server, not every PvPer will chose to move across. So those that don't will find fewer PvPers to play with/against. And some PvPers do PvE and are often members of supergroups that do more than just PvP, so it makes no sense for them to leave.
And, really, everyone seems to be assuming the PvP server would be one of the English-speaking ones because we 'obviously' have more PvPers. What if that doesn't turn out to be the case? Would you still be happy if, say, Vigilance turned out to be the PvP server?
Now put yourself in the shoes of a French or German PvPer who finds an English server is announced as 'the' PvP server. -
[ QUOTE ]
First of all.Noone will be forced to move since this will be an unofficial server.
[/ QUOTE ]
I didn't understand this would be 'unofficial'. So you're saying there will be no indication when selecting a server that it's 'the' PvP server? How is that any different than it is now, then? I thought we already had an 'unofficial' PvP server, no?
[ QUOTE ]
Second of all this is not something to debate uppon really but to have the PvP community vote on it and this is what is happening on US boards atm.
[/ QUOTE ]
How can you have a proper vote if you don't have a debate about the positives and negatives first? When I first read your post, I thought, sure, good idea. But then I read some posts against and started to think about the repurcussions and realised I didn't like the idea so much after all.
I think having the debate before any official vote is necessary, so people have a better idea of how things would work before blinding voting one way or the other. YMMV, I suppose. But I personally am glad no vote has happened yet. -
[ QUOTE ]
And here is Ex Libris response regarding some concerns raised in that poll about transferring many toons and so on
[ QUOTE ]
The further you push out the decisions while still leveling up toons on less vital pvp servers the less options you may have in the future other than server transfers.
[/ QUOTE ]
[/ QUOTE ]
If there's going to be an official PvP server, why leave PvP zones on the other servers? Why not make them PvE only? I think plenty of PvEers would be happy with this, actually, and I don't see a reason for leaving PvP zones in on non-PvP servers, since having an official PvP server would greatly reduce the number of PvPers on them.
No, I don't think his argument holds water. And I think he's being at the least a little naive when he says having an official PvP server will mean 'not having to rely on the transfer service except in the case of that one or two main toons.' I think PvPers with toons on the non-PvP server will feel pressured into paying to transfer many toons across.
Again, the best long-term move would be for them to make the PvP zones cross-server. I'd much rather wait for that than to find myself left on the 'other' server and being stuck with these choices:
1) Continue PvPing on a server where PvP is dying a quick death
2) Recreating my toon on a new server
3) Paying to transfer my existing toon to the PvP server just so I can continue doing what I've been paying to do
And both option 2 and 3 will mean a name change, as my toon's name is already taken on the other server. I'm sure I'm not the only one this would apply to. -
[ QUOTE ]
I am sorry to say but i am wondering why the US servers are already having a poll about Unofficial PvP servers and we are getting nothing. Our opinion is ditched or what?
[/ QUOTE ]
As I've been pointed out again and again, perhaps because European and American cultures are different*? The US NC is all for it I'm sure because they'll get a ton of money. I'm very glad it hasn't been thrown on us here and that we instead get to debate whether it should happen at all.
I personally think there are too many reasons why it should be left as is--no official PvP server. (see my post above)
*Disclaimer: I'm an American living in the UK for four years now. -
[ QUOTE ]
whoa!
(and I'm not too keen on the whole 1 server for PvP idea. What happens to new players who choose the "wrong" server for instance?)
[/ QUOTE ]
Agreed.
Also, they've always had the ability to announce a PvP server; they certainly didn't need to wait for character transfer to do it. PvP was introduced with CoV almost two years ago, and that's when one should've been announced. Since it wasn't, PvP toons have been created across multiple servers. It would seem to me hypocritical of them to announce a PvP server only now that they can make money off of transferring characters that could've been created on a PvP server had one been available. This wouldn't be a courtesy to PvPers, but a money-making tool to NCPlay.
And what about those that don't want to pay to transfer? They'll be left PvPing on a server with even less PvPers.
Unless NCPlay announced, say, a one month grace period on character transfers. I won't hold my breath on that, though. Otherwise, I have to say 'no' to this.
In any event, I think the long standing suggestion of making the PvP zones cross-server is the best way to solve the low PvP population problem. Sure it requires more dev time, but that way you don't have to commit to a specific server to get decent PvP, people that create their toon without knowing about PvP won't be locked into transferring away from friends should they later decide to go for it, and the German and French speaking crowd don't have to PvE on a mostly English server. -
I've played a d/d corruptor since beta and love it. If you like the powersets and are looking to play a villain, go for it.
-
After a six month hiatus, I decided to reactivate my account to see how things have changed since I was last on (mostly to see if they fixed the endurance issues that came about with/just after i7).
I had mostly stopped PvEing once I hit lvl 47, instead spending most of my time PvPing, usually in SC. I don't often play evenings, and never had a problem finding people in SC afternoons--especially not on a Saturday afternoon.
But since reactivating the account Thursday and spending a few hours playing the past few days, I've found very few people in SC or RV (and too many of the people in RV seem to leave if you actually engage them in PvP, saying "I'm here for the xp").
So where is everyone? Have there been some changes to the game that caused PvPers to leave? Have the PvPers just moved to playing only at night? Or am I just mis-remembering how many people used to be signed on during Friday and Saturday afternoons?
To be fair, I've also noticed fewer people in the PvE zones, as well. So maybe there are just fewer players? -
Another thought... what about Dark Pit?
I know the standard reply is that it sucks, but it could have the effect I'm looking for. I saw a few posts that refer to it as a 'squishy detoggler' in PvP, which would be perfect to stop a blasters, controllers and defenders.
But I tried it on test and it only seems to work on minions. Does it actually have an effect in PvP?
(And I actually found it pretty sweet in PvE. Better than FS since affected mobs don't fight back, and a better AoE since it's not a cone but target based). -
[ QUOTE ]
Same will happen with tar patch, but I doubt any semi-decent player will stay on the TP when phased, and it will not debuff their movement before the intangibility effect drops.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hmm... It may be that I could use it to simply 'disuade' the blappers from coming after me (i.e., phase them, wait a few moments while they waste time trying to hit, then tp out).
But I guess the key is just to avoid contact with blappers whenever possible. If I see one coming, run. Hopefully I'll at least prove a distraction for other villains. -
[ QUOTE ]
And I can't tell you what Black Hole is like because I skipped it as well on my /dark MM, mostly because every guide/forum I read said to skip it
[/ QUOTE ]
Same here. I've read a few posts here and there that say it can be useful, but that it's highly situational. Just wondering if this situation would suite it.
Next lvl I choose a new power, so I'll try it out on test. Not sure how much pvp goes on there, though... -
[ QUOTE ]
Feasible, or should I just run?
[/ QUOTE ]
Or is going for Acro a better bet? I know it helps with holds, but does it help with disorient? -
I've been PvPing again (had taken a break post-I7). Happily, the hated toggle-dropping brawl has been sorted. But now I find myself too regularly being stunned and or held by blappers and tanks as their opening move.
I know the obvious tactic is to stay out of hand-to-hand, but these tend to surprisingly quick builds that seem to be able to run towards me and get off a hit before my opening shot, Fearsome Stare, takes effect, making it a bit difficult.
So I was thinking... Black Hole's a power that most /darks seem to avoid, but maybe it has use in PvP. After learning player A is a blapper (usually after being stunned and two-shot killed), next time our paths meet I phase him, giving me time to apply DN, drop TP and move off a bit, and him to waste a couple of shots.
Feasible, or should I just run? -
[ QUOTE ]
like every1 says insps are there to be used, if ppl restock fair enough, its not exactly fair but when have the zones ever been fair?
[/ QUOTE ]
To to follow up on the restock question...
I find the downtime while end and health regen the perfect time to restock. -
Hey all,
Here's my current build. I tend to use most of my powers regularly, with the exception of HT. I really enjoy the crowd control I get. I mostly pve now that I7 has come out, but really enjoy pvp and will certainly get back into that once I'm lvl 50 (just occasionally in the meantime).
I'm especially interested in comments regarding the slotting; for instance, I read in another post recently that a third recharge reduction isn't nearly as effective as the second?
Thanks,
DM

I'm up for it. Mornings are best for me this weekend. When are you planning?
-
Nope. I'm also dark/dark. I tried it on Training Room and realised it was player-based aoe. Since I do my best to stay out of melee range, it would be situational at best.
-
I've just started PvPing, and have yet to see tenebrous tentacles affect an opponent. I have it two slotted for accuracy and am wondering whether (1) it's bugged; (2) it's working, but the animation is turned off; or (3) players simply have an extra-high resist against it.
Any insight?
