I've tried to play other MMOs including CO, and none have ever held my attention like CoH has done.
In this game, we get to write our own stories. Between the incredibly diverse and open game lore and the character creator (complete with a decent space for character bio), we get to be anything we want. We're not just a handful of pre-selected races whose backstory is pre-written for us.
In what other MMO could the avatar of a Skyscraper join forces with a Steampunk inventor, a wood elf, and a garden variety spandex-clad human with superpowers, and the lot of them go on an adventure together?
Here I really bonded with my characters- in game I was unique, whatever I felt like being. Not just random elf/char/human wearing whatever-level gear. I won't get that anywhere else. Being able to transfer stats from one piece of gear to another just won't cut it. -
Between seeing this, and videos of the sleaze-o-riffic MMO NC's pushing to replace CoH, I'm absolutely furious at NCSoft right now.

All I can say is "Beautifully written and well said!"

Steel Canyon here! A nice penthouse apartment in one of those art deco skyscrapers

I just posted it to my facebook as well!

One thing I won't miss- all the freaking -fly that just about everything had in it. Fly got penalized so much it was stupid.

I've added my comment, using the same name as I go by here on the forums.

Before this, I had a friend who was ready to come play with me, as soon as she finished her job training. If the game stays alive, I'll be able to say I got one new player to share my favorite online addiction!
-
I've been playing just like normal- every night I'm off, I can be found in game, leveling up some characters. I've got at least three who I would like to hit 50 with.
-
Yeah, I can see myself using a lot of those new powers..I've been having fun making NYC skyscrapers and running around with them in-game. But some of these new powers..oh dear! Wind control might be fun- make a Dubai skyscraper who's learned to harness the force of sandstorms, for example. Hey, with this Coming Storm business, perhaps Paragon City's been forced to call in reinforcements from across the pond!

Here's AP4 on Virtue last night- I'm the one with the silver skin and white hair, wearing the fur trimmed corset and black robe. That character is my first ever 50, I figured it was appropriate to bring her out for this protest.

If it were just the inf and badges, and stuff, no prob. But if I had to completely restart the vet reward tree, and lose ALL of my unlocked costume pieces- vet pieces including the T9 sets no longer offered, and all of the costume sets I've purchased, that would really suck. Now, if they started off fresh- with ALL the in game costumes we already have as free parts, and other things in the vet system, and completely new things in the market, that would be different.

I remember posting a suggestion in one of the costume threads- I suggested modifying the magic bolero to make a unisex robe, and doing a Chinese Imperial version.
Well, they never did a unisex version, but we all know about the Chinese Imperial costume pack!
I dunno if somebody filed that idea of mine away for future use, or if great minds just think alike. -
Me too..my sub's going to run out soon (it was month to month) and aside from maybe being able to use the code I was saving for a friend, I can't renew..FML

I was there on Virtue as Anlek'Toh. I think I buzzed Samuraiko when we did that bit of filming

Although my forum join date says 2006, reality is a different story. I've been playing since mid-2005.
You see, it all started when I was visiting a friend's house, and he sat us both down in front of his computer to show me this awesome new thing he had found- an online game where you got to make your own superhero and go around fighting crime. He showed me the hellions mugging people on the freaking roofs in Atlas Park, the clockwork scurrying around stealing scraps, the incredibly cool urban landscape. And he showed me the character creator, letting me play with it and showing me how much fun you could have with it. I was hooked right there! I didn't have to play as a pre-set elf or human, or whatever. I didn't have to wear standard level 1 gear, or wear skimpy things if female. I could be anything I wanted, human or non. And I didn't have to be regular human size either, I could go anywhere from 3 to 8 feet, and do all manner of tweeking to my character's head and body, aside from pre-sets. It was one of the coolest things I had ever seen.
And then I got into the tutorial. My friend sat behind me, giving me pointers beyond the tutorial's instructions. So I picked up the game PDQ with his help.
Now, at the time, I didn't have a computer powerful enough to run the game, nor did I have high speed internet at home. So I could only play when visiting my friend. Yes, I know that account sharing like that was technically against the rules, but my friend knew that I wasn't the type to make offensive characters, or go into the game and do or say offensive things that might threaten his account.
Needless to say, I got a computer powerful enough to run COH ASAP, (as soon as I upgraded the video card) and as soon as my family got high speed internet, I created my own account, and the only time it's ever lapsed ever since was when a time card ran out and I had to wait a couple of days to replace it.
I've tried other MMOs, and none have managed to hold my attention like this. WoW's storylines are fun, but it gets frustrating looking like everyone else, with the same sets of gear equipped. I tried CO, but compared to the beautiful work Paragon has done in recent years, its costume parts look amateurish and cartoony. That, and at the time, there was little reason to actually team, and there wasn't the social element that I found in CoH. No central places where people gathered to talk or compare costumes, or do other fun things. Most of the time I felt like I was playing a solo game, other players were just in the background.
I'm also a SWTOR player, and while I enjoy that game, I still love CoH more than anything, and I doubt I'll find anything like it. This game promotes and encourages player creativity and gives us a feel that we're shaping its world like nothing else I have ever played.
Thanks for making such an awesome game, Posi! I know I've disagreed with you sometimes, but that's only human nature. -
I'll be there on Virtue- I may bring Anlek'Toh, my first 50.

I think I've got everybody added on Deviantart

If I could pick a song for the game to end to, I'd take the last one on the score of "300".
"Remember us", it's called.
Here's the awesome track plus speech:

You'll always be Posi to me, no matter what some clown in a suit says!
One thing that's always stuck with me- I remember you and Jack years ago, saying what you had in mind when you created this game- you wanted it to be a good experience for everyone, not just those with hours on end to play, or uber achievement types. You both were parents, so you understood that people didn't always have a lot of time when they logged in. So you wanted to create a game where even if you could only log in for a half hour, you could still do something constructive in that time. You didn't think farming and grinding were fun, and you wanted to give people something else to do, where there was more to the game than hitting the level cap.
That, combined with the amazingly open universe created here, which allows us to be anyone and anything we can imagine has truly won my affections here. I'm not just another elf/human/whatever in the crowd. I don't have to have THE perfect build and skillset, or the right AT to be invited to teams. All the ATs in this game are useful, not just a handful with the rest being fluff or good only for pity-invites. This game is so friendly to just about everyone- there's challenges for the number crunchers, min-maxers, and achievers. There's also lots of fun to be had for the casual players, the soloers, those with lives outside the game.
Here in City of Heroes, I feel much more connected to my characters than I ever have in an MMO. Perhaps because their name, entire backstory, looks, the whole shooting match is my own creation. It's why I've never bonded to an MMO as surely as I have to this one.
I love how you devs have gone out of your way to reach out to the players as often as you have, everything from coffee talks to live appearances. And how you've tried to give us so many things that we players asked for. Here in this community, I feel that my voice matters as a player- it's worth submitting feedback or offering suggestions, that there's a real chance it will be listened to. I don't even bother trying in the other MMOs I've dabbled in.
NcSoft really did you guys a disservice in how they handled this. Not only was it a spit in the face to us players, but it was a real kick in the pants to one of the best and most devoted dev teams they could have asked for. You deserve better!
I'll join the fight to save this game, because I believe that what you and the other devs have created, and let us players have such a hand in shaping is worth fighting for. And if that fails, I'll be on the lookout for the next RPG you want to run for us. -
Likewise. I'm glad I'm not at work right now, it wouldn't be very becoming for a security guard to be seen crying! We're supposed to be tough, dammit!
