I'm not really a big fan of Forum or Journal RP. I find it runs too slowly for my liking, and the more people involved, the more confusion there is. Plus due to it running slower than in-game RP (Where it can often be considered that time runs at its normal progression for each day), you can end up getting a backlog of things and getting hung up on forum RP, plus things that happen in the forum RP could affect your character in game, but due to time lag... well, it gets hella complicated and tricksy.
I use MSN and AIM for RPing with some people (Usually if they're at work or something, or it's a scene that doesn't need to take place in game (Like at a home or a cinema or a resturant or the like).) And also IRC, where I also do a lot of out of game RP, including weddings, (2 so far, and when you're playing 12 or so NPC's... gets complicated to do in game), dinners and tonight a group of intrepid characters are off to Kings Row's alternative nightclub The Pits of Hell to listen to Number Nine/Nene sing. Utilizing screenshots of characters and a floorplan of the club that I've drawn up helps with that too.
I digress though. As I frequently do.
Anyway, while a forum RP isn't something that'd personally interest me, if people are interested and a way to get round some of the playstyle difficulties are put in place, cool, have fun and enjoy.
(Forgot to add, aye, I have characters who go to PCU, Isaac Anderson is studying Buisness Studies, and Juan Ross is just finishing up with Sociology and Psychology.) -

Thank you Z, said it for me, yes Echo has her sadistic side, but also has her good side (Which seems to be surfacing alot more nowadays). But i hate it when Villian players are pigeon holed into the "I'M EVIL MWHAHA KILL EVERYTHING DIE DIE DIE." when some 'Villian' chars arent even like that.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, I hate it when people seem to 'know' that your character is a villain, even if they aren't, simply because the player sees that you're a CoV AT or something. And then will insist on calling you a villain. Because you're from the Rogue Isles.
And to quote a different poster:

The deeds you do to progress in the rogue isles are quite evilly.

I don't do many missions IC, hero or villain side. My heroes might not be the kind to do that kind of mission, or it's not in their interests to, or it might be problematic OOC wise ("Oh, I took down Dr. Vahz." "Hey, I took him down last week." Why bother with fudging that, I just ignore my characters facing him. Same for TF's really.) -
[ QUOTE ]
It seems to me people mostly rp in PD because there are more people there, as a result of the fact both heroes and villains can hang out there. It is fine in small bursts but my characters are heroes! They don't like villains and don't want to hear them standing about talking about their sinister history or activities much. So far I have found GG a difficult area to get involved in too. When I pass it is often empty or there are a couple of people involved in some dramatic conversation about personal issues. Talking about hero stuff and great victories would be easier to break into and you do get ignored if chars are having a personal conversation or being all angsty.
Not that I am saying what people should talk about just excusing my not being more forthright and involved in the rp community so far and to perhaps give a newbies view of the situation.

RE: PD and villains. Not all villains are like that. Heck, not all people from the Rogue Isles -are- villains.
As for GG, it is difficult to get involved in, it may just be a case of luck, right place/right time or character personality that lets you get involved. -

Madame Midknight heads to the door and smiles. "Sweetheart, trust me, okay? I'm a gamesmaster."
Dark Stone: That has to be your favourite line. 'Trust me, I'm a woman', 'Trust me, I'm a Matron Mother', 'Trust me, I have a hat'

What goes on in the Darcmobile?
[ QUOTE ]
"Darcmobile it is, with a delicious popcorny smell too after I took Nene to the cinema and we had our popcorn on the way home." Jane grins, heading to unlock her car.
"You were eating while driving? thats dangerous you know, you could have been killed." Jared chuckles and leans on the roof with his elbow.
Madame Midknight grinned. "Pff, I wouldn't be so reckless with my unlife and my car, babe. Oh, and Nene too. I drove, Nene finger-fed me popcorn."
Dark Stone: Kinky.

Cauter goes to reach into his pocket. "Sure, let me just get my wallet." he says, before bringing his fist forwards and up in an uppercut aimed at the man's chin.

Woooeee, bit of a rough topic.
Okay, time for me to bite the bullet, too, I guess.
As a number of you will no doubt know (assuming anyone reads any of my posts), my main was a character I designed for a PnP RPG many, many moons ago (I think 8-9 years), but who I never played.
I've been playing tabletop RP games for 20 years, and like to think that I can do a good job, though I am aware that I have some flaws - probably caused by the fact that I've been almost exclusively GMing for 15 of those years, and I forget what it's like to be a player.
Since coming to CoH, I've found myself making mistakes. Not too surprising, really, as this is my first attempt to RP online, and it is a completely different experience to playing face-to-face. I often think that people will consider the choices I make and the character I play to be some sort of 'wish-fulfilment fantasy', and in part it is, because that's a part of what RPing is about, but it certainly isn't my focus. I want, very specifically, to create a realistic character, and to explore him. I like to think that I'm succeeding. I've always tried to avoid god-modding, and it comes automatically to me, really, because as a GM I know how much a player hates it when their character is arbitrarily and uncontrolably affected by something I've chosen to do.
Does this make me a Veteran? No Idea. I've been RPing at GG pretty much every day since May/June 2006, so in terms of duration, yeah, I guess I am. Do I think this makes me a good RPer? HELL NO! I'm a slave to my own emotions, and quite frequently RL interferes with how I'm feeling, so the attitude of my toons reflects this. I try not to let it happen, but I'll be the first to admit that it does. I also tend to get seriously wrapped up in my characters' lives, and how I perceive my characters to be feeling can actually affect how I feel, too. In other words, it's quite rare for one of my toons to be angry without me being angry at the keyboard.
I hate that.
The only saving grace I have, as far as I can tell, is that it doesn't happen very often.
So, in short, I'm an experienced RPer, but not an experienced MMORPer, and I don't think I'm a GOOD RPer. I'm an okay RPer at best.

And yeah, I sometimes use the bits in between the maps for house locations.

Ah yes, i know. And i agree totally, changing a characters backstory is a no no. I would say once the chars been 'fleshed out' the backstory should be set in stone. But thats my opinion, was just asking about Echos situation.
[/ QUOTE ]
>.> I've done a few retcons in my time, but those were changes for the better, to make things more concrete, make sense more, or evolve backstory to something better.
I'd give examples, but I have to head to work now! -
I think Zurra means like someone I knew, who had his character change with no reason or warning depending on what TV show he had watched the previous day or earlier, would kill and ressurect his character without a moments notice, and personality swang wildly for no reason either.
-
Aye, everyone's had characters or things happen like that to their characters. I know I've messed up a bit, and still can at times. I'm not infallible, I'm mostly human, just like the rest of you.
And of course, everyone has different styles, and then you get groups of people with similar styles, and so on and so forth. I have some trouble getting along with some styles at times, (Don't worry, not anyone in this thread. ) but I do try to deal with that.
*End rambling.* -
I'd say it depends, really... it's quite subjective. Take me, only a few IRC RP things done before Feb/March 2005, when I joined 'The Society of the Phoenix' RP supergroup, and started attending GG too.
2 and a quater years later, and I'm still about, apart from some breaks. I'd say that qualifies as a veteren CoH EU RP'er. Yet only some of that knowledge can apply to WoW, which I also play. So then you get the split between being (Well, hopefully) a good roleplayer, but being a new RP'er to the setting. -
I'll read recaps, but then again I'm a voracious reader. I've read the back of boxes of cornflakes, ketchup bottles, the Burger King Managers Manual, the Burger King instructions for their flame grills, tills and broilers (Note, I don't and never have worked at Burger King, but my brother did. :P) and the 1985 and 1986 Dairy Diary several times.
I don't generally recap anymore because most of my RP is in a small group of people, hence the need to recap is less needed. Plus seeing as I mostly RP on MSN/IRC now... and have been on a general writing slump. Trying to write more though. -
Great work, _Max_ Not just because I'm Magenta! You did a great job of converting it!

I, for example, consider it good manners to open the door for a lady (or anybody else who passes the same door I am about to pass or have just passed) and I am quite irritated if this is answered by a rude remark by a woman who sees this as sexist behaviour.

Funny story there that I read about, a man on the Underground gave his seat up for a heavily pregnant woman, who in response looked scornfully at him and said "You're only giving me that seat as I'm a woman."
To which he replied: "If you were a pregnant man I'd have offered the seat to you."
A win of epic proportions.
I won't get into the debate on gender, nature vs nurture and socialization, seeing as I'm having enough of that in my exams at the moment. -
And over-camp.
Just cause a guy likes a guy doesn't mean they have to be limp-wristed, mincing, effeminate, over-butch, or any various combination. Or wearing pink. In fact, I know more straight guys that wear pink than [censored]. -

but i expect you could always say Crimson has an NPC partner for a while? although obviously it ain't the same
[/ QUOTE ]
The sad thing is that if I want to either give him a stable homse life, or introduce some "relationship tension" to his story, then I may have to do just that!
Sometimes I watch with an air of jealousy those characters who have got other player characters as boy/girlfriends, as the relationship can play out as more real.
If I have to resort to inventing an "other half" then it just feels kinda..well..contrived.
[/ QUOTE ]
I find NPC partners can be useful. Of course, in some cases it isn't, like when you're playing three people out of four in a relationship. >.o
Of course, there's the less random elements from having another person play the other half, but there's also the fact that you then don't have to synchronize so much about what's been happening in the relationship. If I had to do that with all my characters, I'd never have time to play the game! -

Of course, this isn't cause they are lesbian, but cause they are 20+ yr old guys sitting at home RPing dykes so that they get a kick out of it... (sorry, i know that is not true for everyone).

Indeed! (21 year old girl playing a 37 year old married lesbian mother of three as one of her main characters for the past 2 years :P )
Hmm, to look at it...
Zortel - Zorielle Rolando, married to Tessa Lenson (Another alt of mine), 3 children (2 of which are biologically her own, one adopted)
Cauter - 26 year old guy, dating Lyn-Legend, so straight
Storm Sapphire - 28 year old FtM transgender PPD Officer dating a Warshade catgirl. Straight.
Jane Darc - Mid-twenty something zombie girl dating a man who looks in his 40's (Dark Stone) Straight, and not necrophilic. Honestly.
Zortel III - Jessica Kade, Nanomite created woman married to an alien girl with cat ears and a tail. Her children are her beloved pet kitten and bunny. Lesbian.
Number Nine - Gynoid who's currently kinda single, mostly straight.
Jan Boa - Snake girl, straight.
Alraune - Pansexual
Isaac Anderson - Bisexual polyamorist deviant. (Now there's a mouthful.)
Juan Ross, Sophie Reylands - As above, minus the deviant part. :P
Fusebox - Lesbian
Cindersnap - He's not even sure yet, being 15, so damned if I know!
Fist of Faust - Homosexual, but it never came up in conversation.
Ashley Yves - Bigendred and bisexual.
I could dig into my rabble of other alts, but those are the main ones. A fairly mixed bag as it were! -
Poor Ultimune. :<
Aye, I can see a lot of characters being mentally messed up. -
Moving on from that (), if I played CoH more and brought some of my other characters out, there'd be a few more about!
-
I've got a few guys who dig guys, a few guys who dig guys and girls, some lesbians, some bisexuals, some transsexuals and Isaac.
The guy runs a freaking BDSM themed club! He sung Shania Twain's 'Man, I Feel Like a Woman' on stage! He's turned up to Galaxy Girl topless, he's turned up in a skirt, he's turned up dressed as Hikari-Hime (That's Shining Princess in Japanese.) He's great.
And yes, giving out some Kelvin love here. <3 -
Of course, if it's anything like the first war, a supergroup base is the last place you want to be, seeing as they'll be taking them out post-haste in the opening salvo of plasma weapons.
-
Indeed, I may have to return from WoW for this...
Four years ago, Zorielle 'Zortel' Rolando left her wife in the ZorTel Industries lab to protect her neighbourhood. She lost her wife to the war, she sustained heavy injuries, was rendered infertile and had life go a fair bit bad for her. Living on Rolando Island, and being the head of the Unity Vigil, what will she do? Will she stay on the island, or will she come back to lead her fellows into battle? What will the members of the Unity Vigil do?
And will the Rikti come to Rolando Island? Lord knows they have reason to. -
Hello, prospective Kheldian host!
1
That really depends on how you want to play it. With some, they've become one being, some refering to themselves as 'we', the others as 'I'. Some of them exist as dual personalities, able to work together or take over when needed, and some are still as they were when human, just with Kheldian powers.
2 I've always played it as a bit of a mixed reaction to Peacebringers, and a bit more towards negatively towards Warshades.
3 I'll have a think on this one. -
Aaah, didn't notice that. I've always played it that Superman is a comic book character, just like here. :P
