A second attempt at Forum RP

I've had the pleasure of hanging out with the Americans on their forums right and I am currently enjoying roleplaying at the famous Paragon University forum thread. I remember sometime last year Necropolis ran a short-lived attempt at a similar project and I think it crashed because it went too fast, probably due to lack of rules and guidelines in the opening post.

So question is, is forum roleplaying something this community would like to dabble in some more? I'm certain that a lot of your roleplayed characters are likely to be attending a university or teach at a university, maybe even PU itself. So, should we try again to setup our own Paragon University Open RP thread? Perhaps organise it collectively, set the scenery, choose Moderators and agree on some healthy rules.

Thankfully i9 came with interior designs, mission maps and inside access to the existing in-game universities so this should help with imagery. Also worth mentioning is Nuclear Zealot's supergroup based on PU staff and students, how is that going? Is there perhaps a private forum I don't know of where PU is played out?

Lots of questions there so as usual, answers, opinions and comments on a post card. Thank you please.

I love forum RP, only just got into it recently and i do it alot on our boards, its sometimes even more immersive than the game, theres no deadline as such and things go easy. I personally aren't too knowledgeable of the rulings etc seems ive never RP'd my char on a public forum. But ive had alot of fun doing it on EVIL's boards, like i say, sometimes even more fun than the game.

It sounds like a good idea Pious, but if its gonna be that serious isnt there like a character sheet thing? So you cant suddenly say "My char can do that though" i dont know not too knowledgeable of the subject.

We in the Hyperion Watchmen have done some forum RP for awhile now and just recently started to RP via MSN since we felt we needed to go faster to conclude the story. (Last session tonight actually!)
It's working beautifully!

Romanov is the GM/moderator at the moment and we all agreed on some basic rules and to "flesh out" our characters with some quirks/skills/flaws/etc... so that we all knew (especially Rom.) who they really are and what they can do.

PM Romanov or check out the Watchmen forum for details (link in my signature!).

(After my vacation I'll gladly join in on some forum RP!)

You guys should try RPing over IRC. It's WAY better then forum or MSN RPing...

What is IRC?

Just about the oldest way of communicating over the internet; barring Telnet. It stands for Internet Relay Chat and is the original form of chatrooms you get on some websites today. You're pretty much unlimited in how you can express yourself on there.

I run a private IRC server for some friends and I, but there are many many global networks out there...

I've been forum roleplaying with the Militia for over a year now, we started of on this forum and moved to our own private area which is now rich with flavoured forms of RP and RP'ers, but I know a good few amount of people with students at PU and some with professors. So, I think a thread for roleplaying Paragon University would be good for this community. I just don't know if there is enough interest to base it here on these forums.

I'm not really a big fan of Forum or Journal RP. I find it runs too slowly for my liking, and the more people involved, the more confusion there is. Plus due to it running slower than in-game RP (Where it can often be considered that time runs at its normal progression for each day), you can end up getting a backlog of things and getting hung up on forum RP, plus things that happen in the forum RP could affect your character in game, but due to time lag... well, it gets hella complicated and tricksy.

I use MSN and AIM for RPing with some people (Usually if they're at work or something, or it's a scene that doesn't need to take place in game (Like at a home or a cinema or a resturant or the like).) And also IRC, where I also do a lot of out of game RP, including weddings, (2 so far, and when you're playing 12 or so NPC's... gets complicated to do in game), dinners and tonight a group of intrepid characters are off to Kings Row's alternative nightclub The Pits of Hell to listen to Number Nine/Nene sing. Utilizing screenshots of characters and a floorplan of the club that I've drawn up helps with that too.

I digress though. As I frequently do.

Anyway, while a forum RP isn't something that'd personally interest me, if people are interested and a way to get round some of the playstyle difficulties are put in place, cool, have fun and enjoy.

(Forgot to add, aye, I have characters who go to PCU, Isaac Anderson is studying Buisness Studies, and Juan Ross is just finishing up with Sociology and Psychology.)

I've a character that lectures at Steel Canyon, twice a month. Never really done anything with it other then the odd comment.

Might do something with it if this kicks off, but, as said by Big Z... the time lapse will have to be overcome.
I think I'll not mention any lecture on these forums until they are completed as the next set of lectures.

Got to agree on the time scale bit, it does get tricky and ive had it happen a few times on EVIL's boards. Thats te only thing i could say i dislike about it, though i dont do it seriously with character sheets and all the like, i dont think i'd like that simply because, to me, it would become a chore.

What if instead of the thread being used mundanely, people roleplay on it when plots allow or requires them to. Playing out their students or lectures when there is something to share with the community. Its how I use the Thugs Mansion thread. Every day, life goes on as normal, but every so often a day or two stands out and is roleplayed on this here forums. It should be okay that way because you're not tied down to one global timeframe unless you're involved with a certain plot or story which also is moderated by the teller.

For example, in the previous post Professor Hates is lecturing his science students when he receives a message on his pager that his daughter was assaulted and put to hospital. Some people may send a PM to Hates asking to join that plot by playing a student present in that class, but you on the other hand make your own post regarding the big plot you're just wrapping up.

I suppose this is one way to do it, it still means the university will have to be controlled, a list of staff, a map and an archive of events/plots gone and past that affect that world. I'm happy to take on that responsibility if this kicks off. What do you think, good idea? I think its a good idea...

I like this idea. I agree that forum rp can end up dragging (it took us about two months to play out a day recently) but I think PiousÂ’ last post would be a good place to start. Plots could start in the forum, or pass through it, but people would have the freedom to play them out in a way that suits them whether it be IRC, MSN, in game or another forum.
I have two characters with links to the uni (a student and a prof) and think it would be interesting to have a way for them to interact with their peers and become involved in rp with people outside my normal circle.

I dunno, Hatesman might be too tempted to Fire-Bomb the place.

No! Of course not. But someone might. How do you deal with that?

Grieving can be dealt with the way grieving is supposed to be. Ignored and reported.

Either way, I'd be interested watching this one...

Could set it up like a TV show, have seperate Episodes within Semesters/Seasons. 3 Seasons per year with a seperate global storyline that develops and concludes in each. The gap in between being the perfect time to introduce new students and teachers.

I dunno... I've always wanted to mimic TV with RP... *Shrug*

I have a character attending PU - Croatoa campus, namely, and the juggling of studying and saving the world in a regular basis is one of her troubles, so yes, I'd love to join this RP if indeed it goes off.
