Have played 4 of the 6 troller types so far (illusion, earth, ice and grav) I would rate these if you look at the ability to control like this:
1: Earth (awesome set, so many powers available that you can keep a steady flow of control without many holdups, teamdependant all the way to 50 since you can't kill anything before 32 and after that your still slow)
2: Ice (quite a lot soft control and lots of speed/recharge debuff niceness, very good in PvP )
3: Gravity (decent solo'er with lift and propel for damage, best troller pet there is!)
4: Illusion (lacks controls, probably have one of the best powers in phantom army though, great solo'er)
I have a lowlvl mind and a lowlvl fire troller going to see how theyre like too. Thimk the main reason for people choosing illusion and fire is 'cos of the dmg these types can deal. -

Think your missing Willows point Innigo. He says that he is well aware of the risks and don't mind a fight 'cos that's to be expected in the PvP zones...he just don't like and accept the insults, personal attacks etc in these zones and I frankly agree with him. I like PvP and are in the zones quite often but on many an occasion I've left the zones being in a bad mood 'cos of ganking and such. I would love the tone would be more civil (which it is often is aswell).

Fulcrum definately needs 3 recharges, you want this to be up as soon as possible + I would recommend adding more slots in siphon speed for that "almost like the good ol' permahasten days" (it stacks)
Don't slot fire cages for dmg, 1 or 2 acc maybe and end red and immob duration...test it and see what fits.
As NB said the flashfire + firecages will be your most important move...especially after you get fireball; flashfire + fire cages + fulcrum shift + fire ball = dead mobs
As Flicker_Flame said you won't wanna bother with ID unless you haven't got anything else to take (doubt that ) but of course its a nice power to have in PvP -

I don't think AOE immobs are bad... particularly with Ice Control where you can use your AOE hold (Glacier) and then hit them with the AOE Immobilize. Held + Group double DOT damage is very nice imo
Once you hit the 40s this gets even better if you take one of the AOE attacks available from the epics. You can take down an entire mob singlehandledly very very quickly...

AoE immobs arent very good to begin with and personally prefer the single immob as a pseudo dmg dealer at first and then either take the AoE later on or respec the single out for the AoE.
Good for setting up containment + keep baddies in ur RI/EF clouds
Note that the AoE tends to get you quite the aggro -

For Grav i would probably recommend Rad over Kin for the debuffs and extra control in EM Pulse. Rad is really a set where you (almost!) can't go wrong and it's really good in PvP if you wanna go down that road.
Kin is also a fun set but a late bloomer and your playstyle will be more frantic and fast than with Rad + teams will love you for transfusion, speed boost, transference and fulcrum shift

pfft gravity has brilliant pets and great holds as well as some special control moves! Also illusion is the most wanted set as it keeps agro ok i admit it aint got many holds but it does have flash and blind! On a av blind is fast to recover and rarely misses. And insestructable pets rock i mean if you have no tank they are the next best thing! Dont mean to argue with you but i dont think i would get to 41 with the *weakest set*!

ok, gonna do this one last time...first, I already said that the grav pet is the best pet in the game IMO. Second, the special control moves you talk about is what makes grav fun as I mentioned too. Third, I have at no point said that grav and ill where weak, simply that they haven't got the same control capabilities as mind/earth/ice and to a lesser extent fire.
Furthermore I believe illusion is so popular 'cos it looks good and has exellent solocapabilities where for instance earth is totally teamdependant to lvl 32 (and since the earth pet is pretty poor) and probably to epics.
I'm in the process of trying all the troller primaries and currently have a 50 ill/rad (my first and an exellent place to start if it's your first troller), 50 earth/kin (immense control and power), 43 ice/storm (shaping up to be a real killer in PvP) and a 36 grav/emp (dont play him much simply 'cos my other ones are better! much to do with the secondary of course). I've still to try fire/? and mind/? but that's soon to come.
This is my point of view and I understand if someone would disagree just hope that I've made my point clearer now -

Grav and illusion are weak? Funny as no other AT can create an indestructible army and have great pets at below lvl 30

OK, maybe weak was the wrong word to use. Both are very powerful but still lacks control compared to the other sets I mentioned (control swapped for dmg).

AFAIK grav holds have the same basic duration and mag of all other troller holds so it's depending on slotting.

Mine is rad and as you say compliments grav well, choking cload sucks and seems pointless imo as its acc seems to suck and you cant put any acc enhancements in it so in pvp you ahve no real pbaoe protection.

This is simply not true but choking cloud is not a power all rads should pick. It's exellent for trollers and defenders who wants to get down and dirty...for instance I think it's a must for fire trollers; simply awesome combo. -

I hope you mean you dropped the single immob and not the hold (tho the single immob is very handy against AVs in the 40s)?
The 3 powers I used the most was; single hold, stalagmites + stone cages for an extra aoe hold...worked wonders...so I'd advice to take stalagmites as soon as you can get your hands on it -
yup...what Light said + a few other things.
1: skip the recharge in Phantasm since its perma unless you plan on gettin it killed fairly often
2: Consider puttin more slots in fireshield, usually go for 2 end reds and 3 dmg res myself (the end reds may not be as important since u got transference)
3: Personally i slot transference 3 acc, 1 rech, 2 end mods. You really dont wanna miss with this power + with hasten and siphon speed it will be up whenever needed.
4: 3 fears in spec terror really isnt needed. Go for 1 or 2 acc and 2 fears
5: Try and get siphon speed slotted a bit sooner for that extra rechargegoodness

Recall friend is still quite nice to reposition the sing. I use it all the time to put it in doorways and such.

Currently working on my grav whos lvl 34 atm I'd say that (as stated by others) that you definately would want to take lift. It adds a little to gravs lacking of major control.
You would think that wormhole isn't that great and I wasn't planning on taking it at first but I must admit thats it's great power...especially after you get your sing. Place sing in a corner and worm foes into the corner behind the sing and just sit back and read the paper while the sing gets to work + it's a powerful pulling tool and have the handy disorient.
On a sidenote you can't beat the novelty of grav. Flinging sofas, cars, forklifts etc at baddies and toss em 100ft into the air
