Whats the deal with all the attitude in PvP?

I'll say this right now, i'm not a fan of PvP. I don't deal well with getting beaten by others so i stay clear of it cos i'm not very good at it and don't really stand a chance without a team to back me up.

Last night, myself and 4 friends were trying to get a badge for killing longbow (for us heros, you can only kill them while confused), so first off we went to Sirens and got a friend with his villain to confuse us while we pounded longbow. wasn't really working cos there were just way too many people (heros and villains) in the area, so we left to Bloody Bay. Started off there, found a nice spot just south of the hero base and started off with confuse/kill longbow. all was going well til the broadcasts started from the villains. All along the lines of "where are you heroes? Come on, i wanna own you". We stayed quiet, just minding our own business carrying on. Til they found us. we had a fight, we handed their [censored] to them on a plate (without a single one of us going down, or even going below yellow health bar 1 AS), and settled back down to things. We knew it was a PvP area so we knew we'd get into a few fights. We figured they'd leave us along after we owned them. they didn't. they tried again, and we owned them again (again, taking no losses). Then the attitude starts up. "you're all cowards, come out and fight blah blah blah". I hate people mouthing off, so start back at them, more or less telling them to leave us alone cos we're not here for PvP, but if you attack us we'll kill you again. we're better than you, so just go find yourselves a differnt target" kinda thing. Needless to say, they carried on picking on us. 3rd fight was a real beauty. still just the 4 of us (1 blaster, 2 scrappers, and me, and emp defender). Outnumbered about 3 or 4 to 1, including several stalkers running around, and an MM with his pets, we eneded up having a huge fight. this lasted for ages, a good 20 minutes plus, just cos one would die, go to hospital and then come back to join the fray. not one of us died once. Not even me, the squishiest of the team. eventually, we were joined by a few other hero friends, including a tanker and a warshade, and we totally annihilated the villains. I have to say i enjoyed it, cos the villains continued to mouth off at us, even though we kept killing them. We didn't start the fight, we finished it. and to round things off we decided to go to the villain base, once all the villains had thrown their last insults and run away, all with at least (i reckon) 5 or 6 deaths from that third battle alone, and at least 1 in the 4 other fights we had.

Why do so many of the PvP-ers have to have such an attitude? The reason why i stopped playing Counter-Strike was cos i got so fed up with the elitist attitudes of several players. I stay away from PvP areas unless i'm badge-hunting (which i do a lot these days), but i get [censored] off with people mouthing off at me and calling me a coward for not fighting them. I choose not to take part in PvP, for the most part, precisely for this reason. Like in Warbug soloing about half 4 yesterday, when i was looking for the exploration badges. I'm quite a friendly player, for the most part, and like to have a chat, so when someone says "is anyone here?", i'll normally say "hello. ". When i did so yesterday, this brute kept saying "come and fight me", not taking no for an answer. so once again i say whats the deal with all the attitude?

People dont like to loose,or be made to look stupid.

If you owned this guy you probably hurt his pride thats why he came with the attitude,no one likes to loose its just that most people are mature enough to deal with it.

Although saying that the people that I fight against in the PvP zones are one of the reasons I keep coming back and I have made alot of friends from CoV that I wouldn't have nececeraly met if they were just playing CoH PvE.

I think PvP zones are one of the best things that have happend to this game, but it also brings out the crappyness in some people, you take the rough with the smooth and wait for the 50 PvP zone to come about because 99.9% of the 50's i've met are really cool people and wouldn't do this sort of thing

Nothing you've described sounds particularly bad. You were trash talked at and some villains took you on while you were wanting to PvE in a PvP zone. Them's the breaks I'm afraid.
People generally don't leave you alone because you beat them once, they come back looking for revenge - that's kind of how it works. Calling you a coward is simply an attempt to drag you into a fight.
I do it in SC all the time to those players who insist on "base-hugging", something I personally sneer at
I don't think it's an "attitude" that is in any way surprising, people primarily go to PvPs to... PvP.

Yeah, an attempt to drag us into a fight we didn't want to be part of. As i said, we knew it was a PvP zone, and we knew that we'd probably get into a few fights, but i kinda hoped that after we told them we're not interested in fighting them, and after we beat them several times, they would have left us alone. instead they still insisted on taunting us etc. Yes, people got to PvP for PvP....so what about the badge-hunters who have no choice but to go to PvP areas for badges? I tolerate PvP, i didn't even complain when i got killed in SC trying to get a badge right on the edge of the villain base. I know that in a PvP zone i'm likely to get attacked and killed. I'm not complaining about that. I'm asking why people insist on taunting and mouthing off and saying things like "Hah! I just owned you" all the time. Its a deliberate attempt at getting someone riled. It would be like me taking part in a kata competition and taunting my opponent after i beat them. We can do without that kind of attitude in CoH/CoV.

I don't have a problem with being involved in fights in PvP zones even when i don't want to fight. Like i said, when i'm in a PvP zone i can't (and won't) complain about being killed when i've conciously made the choice to go to the PvP zone in the 1st place....

edited to remove a (rightly pointed out) bad analogy.

That's almost ENTIRELY different from what you claimed in your first post; where you said you beat the villains time and again without losses and they coming back for more. As for your analogies, they're generally false as no one suffers in a PvP zone. Losing costs you nothing, it certainly doesn't leave you bleeding in the gutter, so what if someone gleefully announces they beat you? Again, not a drama. A lot of it I've noticed is just harmless banter and not indicative of darker motives.
Sometimes it is though, sometimes people don't see the funny side and start hurling personal insults that are reacted to and things take a turn for the mean - usually resulting in someone leaving the zone in a huff claiming something about the number of n00bs on being too much for them.
But that as far as I can tell is the exception.

As for the badge hunters who have no choice but to come into a PvP zone, of course they have a choice, they could choose not to get that badge. If they want the badge then they have to accept the hazards of the zone which in a PvP zone means other players. That's simply the nature of the beast.

sorry if thats how you read it, it wasn't meant to be. I thought i said pretty much the same thing in my first post, sorry. Yes, we beat them time and time again, but i was meaning for you to focus on the insults they were hurling at us, rather than what actually happened. sorry if i got the emphasis wrong in what i wrote.

the 1st analogy isn't so comparable, no, but the second about the kata competition is (kata involves no fighting or physical contact between two people (unless doing bunkai)). its the same principle as say a game of tennis or something, then slagging off the other person when you beat them, or constantly taunting them through the match.

you say only sometimes the "banter" is personal insults? seems like everytime i'm in a PvP zone there's always insults being thrown from one side to the other etc etc. maybe i've just had bad luck with times i've been in there, but so often i hear all the "you *enter hero/villain AT here* suck, i just owned you", or "you're a coward, come back and fight me" (normally from stalkers who always spend more time running away in PvP matches where i've seen them, or lying dead on the floor). I'm meaning to just ask what the point of it all is? it seems to me like its always a deliberate attempt to annoy people....

badge hunters who want badges have no choice but to go into PvP zones if they want all the badges. as i said, i acknowledge the risks and don't complain about being killed in a PvP zone by a villain. it happens. what you shouldn't have to put up with in a pvp zone is the insults, which is what i've been trying to focus on in this thread (but obviously not very well. )

Think your missing Willows point Innigo. He says that he is well aware of the risks and don't mind a fight 'cos that's to be expected in the PvP zones...he just don't like and accept the insults, personal attacks etc in these zones and I frankly agree with him. I like PvP and are in the zones quite often but on many an occasion I've left the zones being in a bad mood 'cos of ganking and such. I would love the tone would be more civil (which it is often is aswell).

btw...Willow..I would've owned u!!

In the end, people are stupid. Thats all it boils down to im afraid. I too stopped playing Counterstrike (and BF2), thanks to the attitude of people in competetive gaming. Its no fun, if every time you go there, for a full month, there is this kind of stuff swimming around.

Only solution? Lawkeepers. GM's who frequent PVP zones, and squish those things as they arrive. Though, it'd be hard to find people who are such masochists..

I hate when people start to throw insults in pvp zones. I've been provoked on numerous occasions but i don't think i've ever resorted to insults. Sure, sometimes i get really annoyed but either i ignore them and leave them be or i just vent off talking to my friends in tells

I can understand why they kept coming back. They probably wanted to prove they could beat you (even if they couldn't ).

But I agree about the attitude, there's no need for it and it ruins PvP for everyone.

Agree completely, just like to add. PvP zones are sometimes the best way to find out what kind of person you're playing with. Someone might be calm and nice in PvE but can turn into a brat once things doesn't go their way in a pvp situation. It can be an eye opener

I never thought of it like that..

Thankfully, only one person was a bit of a jerk in PVP, that I had previously teamed with, but once he got out of hand, insulting a villain we took down in local chat (the unconscious body), a quick cuff to the back of the head sorted him out.

If the only thing that truly bothers you is the way some villains behave in chat, i suggest turning off villain chat in the game options. There's no need for you to have villain broadcast chat on, unless you go to the PVP zones just to do villain broadcast chat. In fact I think it might help you to turn of villain chat completely and stay in touch with your villain helpers, completely through the global chat network.

I've read posts like this before and a lot of people seem much happier after they've turned off villain chat.

I dont really consider this an option as you are restricting in game communication from your friends on the other side of the game both in the PVP and PVE zones (yeah they can use global chat but people often dont see the "player not seeing enemy" message as they just use the click not the @ function, it also still prevents interaction with your friends on the opposing side). Besides there are jerks spouting crap and profanity on both sides.

This is why people like yourself really need to PvP. I am not PvPing to make Villains upset or angry in any way, i fight because there are kids that enjoys making heroes angry. The only way you gonna get respect is if you fight back, and its the only way these scumbags will ever learn to behave.

This is an MMORPG and PvP is a must for content to flourish. And in every game you need to learn to deal with these kind of people. The people that curse on you in PvP zones are the same ones who makes fun of you if you miss a shot in Counter-Strike. Deal with it ! Fight back ! Are you outnumbered ? Give them the best challenge they ever had before dying.

Dont give these players the satisfaction of ruining the game for you. If you are on my server i will protect you myself

In pvp and pve I have exactly the same attitude with regards to things I say.

This is a "comic book" game and you have to expect your villains and heroes to have some form of banter or trash talking, and as long as it does not resort to expletives I dont care.

But in the above cases it is all good natured, if anyone starts getting angry then they should take a break, the game is not going anywhere.

Sure there are idiots who dont seem to be able to draw a line between fun banter and insults.

Just as there are people who get really angry when they get defeated in pvp..strange people.

As an aside, I am one of the serial victims in sirens (not in BB I rule BB!) and I will keep on attacking a superior target till they make that criticle mistake.

Though I may die 100 times for every one of my kills, that one victory is pure nectar.

((obviously this only counts with regards to Spurr my blaster. My scrapper kicked behind till I deleated him ))

The thing that killed any hope of pvp for me wasn't the fighting other players, it was the farming by groups of players.

I went in early on looking for a group to pvp with as I thought it would be quite fun to team up and take on some villains. All my requests for a team got me was a constant attack by groups taking me out without warning, then spammed abuse and some quite unpleasant comments when I pointed out how unfair it is for 8 players attacking one without even warning me they were there. It was made even worse by the fact that they camped outside the hospital and got me every time i poked my head out. I know there is a 30 second window of safety, but as soon as it wore off I was faceplanted again with masses of insults about how [censored] I was.

Before I get the flames about how I was in a pvp zone and should expect to be attacked, yes I know. That was the point of me being there. If it was a lone player I wouldn't have minded but being farmed by a full team was really annoying. The only result of my requests for a team was to advertise that there was an easy chicken ready for plucking.

To be honest, I don't think I would have minded if they had only done it the once and sent laughing messages to me along the lines of "welcome to sirens call, hope you enjoy your stay". I have a sense of humour and can take the bad with the good. It's the abuse I was getting that killed it for me. That, and the fact that I had to log and play a different character until I could be sure they had gone and I could get to the exit without fear.

And such people tend to gravitate to games where they can exploit others and show their 'superiority'. Adding PvP zones to CoX opened the gates, so now they are coming to here as well. Well, most everything is a two-sided sword. I don't mind that much. If only they could even speak english.

I just wish they would stop designing the game in a fashion that effectively encourages this. (ie. widening the gap between good PvPers and beginners, and introducing horrible risks to losing which will just cause bitterness. (I refer to upcoming IoPs the way I perceive them))

my 2inf worth:

I find most people in PVP good fun. I never used to venture into these areas, cause I did not think I would enjoy them.. I was wrong.

A little sledging is part of the banter imho and I give as much as I get (fun not nasty). If they insult you, you have probably beat them. Remember sticks & stones....

I thunk Badges won in PvP areas, should feel sweeter due to the "risk" involved in getting them.

On a final point, I have found many chars happy to engage in whatever style of PvP suits me, either ambush or 1 on 1 duals with others standing and watching, complementing and laughing as appropriate and not ambushing the dualists. I have also found enemies willing to assist me in offering feedback on my powers and style. There are a few idiots about, but hey! walk down any street and observe.

One of the Great things in CoH/Cov is the ability to PVE or PvP when I want to. Long may it last

Next time u there send me a tell at my global handle and i ll change your mind about PvP zones .

Sadly the majority of villains out there appear in the zones and use /whoall to see who is there. If they see specific names they turn around and run cause they recognise regulars. If not they just make teams and start spamming the "I r teh pvp god".Not that it doesnt happen to heroes side too.
