I would go Stone/FA, myself. Now, I've never played either of those combos in particular, but I have a Stone/, Dark/, and /FA, so I can kind of see what the combos will be like.
Generally, FA is seen as a squishier set, so the damage mitigation of Stone/ should help toughen you up.
Conversely, Dark/, although arguably more powerful, has much less utility. Also, while it shines in the ST department, it is lacking in AoE power (which FA helps with.) Thus, in my mind, they would not pair as well together.
If someone who has played these combos wants to weigh in, that may be helpful. But I'm pretty sure that Stone/ would be the better choice (IMO, YMMV).

Quote:Well, not to be a downer, but you're really cutting out the strongest farming secondaries (namely WP, Fire, and SD). Personally, I would say to say stick with your SS/Fire. If you invest enough inf in it, it will easily beat an SS/Elec (IMO, YMMV). If it aint a broken combo for farming, why re-roll?So i want a new brute for farming. I currently have an SS/fire brute and it sucks ***. I dont want WP, invul, fire, or shield. Any suggestions?
Thnaks in advance
Just my 2 inf.
If your heart is set on another brute, though, go SS/Elec.

Quote:I completely agree. While I'm sure that you can farm quite effectively with your purpled out build, the OP was looking for something in the price range below 500 mil, and that build would not be very effective with a low budget (eg. the lack of Knockout Blow, the strongest ST attack). Just to clarify for Firey: generally, you don't use an attack as a set mule if it is or can be necessary in your rotation. You have got literally 0 damage enhancement in your best ST attack. Even with Rage, Fury and FE, not slotting KO Blow as an attacks is bad.
Recharge is king, but there's not much point to having high recharge if your powers are all poorly slotted for it.
You are right about the defense, though. Building for defense is useless if you farm Nemesis, better going for +rech/+rec/+hp.
Third-ed on skipping the attempt to hit the softcap, though. You'll find it fairly useless in missions against Nems. Recharge all the way for a farming SS/Fire, while picking up any +HP bonuses that you can along the way.
Edit for a constructive comment:
Your build sacrifices too much damage for defense, IMO.
Not slotting Dark Oblit for damage is a mistake. Another AoE power can do nothing but good.
In general, the build isn't awful, but it can definitely be improved upon. Don't keep focusing on defense, stick to recharge. That will help a lot with the build's viability.

Quote:As Kitsune said, Rad/Anything should do well against AVs.So the question is, Does a Rad/Arc Defender have the right to be called an AV eater?
/Arch is more of an AoE powerhouse, but it's ST damage is decent. However, it is out shined by other sets (such as /sonic) in the ST department.
I can't say how a Rad/Arch would do against an AV, but with enough IOs, I'm sure it can do fairly well. Now, the question to ask yourself is this: Is it more important to you to have an /Arch toon, or are you willing to play another combo that is, for the most part, a better AV soloist with less investment.
Personally, I would go Rad/Sonic if you want a bad-*** AV soloer. I've been playing one for a while now, and it has slowly become my main.

Well. That's an..... Interesting build.
You did manage to hit the softcap, but you went about it in a very unorthodox way.
What are you going for in this build (besides the softcap)? You are throwing money at it with LotG +Rech's and HOs, but you didn't really get anywhere. While the build isn't wrong, I would definitely change it. You're spending WAY too much inf, while getting nothing in return. Get rid of the HOs, to start.
If you are going for massive Rech, which the LotGs seem to imply, you would need to pick up hasten.
And why the Gift of the Ancients? Hmm, I would just use the build that I posted, but if your heart is set on something with these powers, I understand.

Hey Jak,
For the most part, the build is generally the same between Scrappers and Brutes: Aim for the softcap to Melee, Ranged, and AoE while maintaining as much recharge as possible.
Personally, I try to grab Aid self as well, as I find that the RNG can be annoying at times.
I'm not sure what your budget is, so I'm just going to throw together a mid-ranged build. Let me know if you want it more/less expensive.
Here's a sample build:

Another route is to grab more Melee defense elsewhere and slot the Achilles Heel Proc in Slash for added DPS.
It's entirely up to you.

Hey Psylenz. Here's a version of my build. It's fairly cheap because, in all honesty, Bots/Dark functions just fine without a heap of shiny IOs.
I'm assuming that you're interested in AV/GM soloing. If I'm wrong, let me know.
Feel free to leave out the expensive IOs (Theft of Essence/Numi/Soulbound procs) as well as any costly sets, I was able to solo almost any AV before I got them. I had virtually no end issues before IOs, so no need to worry about that, either.
I'm sitting at the softcap to s/l (with the 12% buff from my Prot. bots), although it is unnecessary considering all of the -to hit going on.
**Just some extra information to help with understanding what is needed defense-wise when to-hit debuffs are involved, feel free to skip it.
Lvl 50 AVs have 85% to-hit debuff resistance, lvl 52s have 86%
So:
A Lvl 50 AV - DN + Fluffy should give a 7.05% to-hit debuff
A Lvl 52 AV - DN + Fluffy should give a 6.58% to-hit debuff**

Quote:Hmm, I wouldn't be so quick to disregard HoB. As of now, it pales in comparison to RoA, but I'm fairly certain that there will be changes in the near future.Good points.
I was discounting the nuke since most nukes are PBAoE. I'd be jumping for joy if it wasn't, but I'm used to be the basic nuke tactics, and how they're an exception to the normal play of the character (RoA excepted).
For now, though, it is still a crashless nuke on a 2 minute timer dealing fairly good damage (not compared to RoA, but still). -
Just for testing purposes, I intentionally tested what I thought would be the most awkward pairings with DP/.
Surprisingly, I ended up loving my TA/DP Defender. Redraw was no problem at all and being able to light Oil Slick with incendiary rounds is great.
My DP/Fire was.....interesting. I personally have never liked /fire on blasters, but it was nice to have a powerset that allows you to take only 2-3 powers so you can focus on the main attraction, DP. It wasn't very survivable, but did do some pretty good damage with Build Up + Blazing Aura + DP/ AoEs + FSC.
As everyone else has said, the "FoTM" seemed to be either DP/Energy or DP/MM. I played those as well, and they were very fun and stable.

Hmm, I don't think so. It does have a lot of AoEs, though. I can see it becoming a major contender in the AoE department, especially when adding in incendiary rounds.
The animations are like nothing I've seen before, being extremely flashy (although I do enjoy them!). I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the set. It won me over, that's for sure.

Quote:Just a quick heads up. You are, effectively, at the softcap with only 40% Ranged defense. Even in the most extreme circumstances (other than defense debuffs), you will be just fine. I built my Rad/Sonic for AV soloing ability, and he is quite survivable with only 40% Ranged def.At 40% Def, you're getting hit roughly twice as often as you would be at 45% Def, so it's your call whether that extra 5% is worth it or not.
If you don't believe me, here are the numbers!
lvl 50 AVs have 85% to-hit debuff resistance, lvl 52s have 86%
lvl 50 AV - RI reduced to 7.125% to-hit debuff
lvl 52 AV - RI reduced to 6.65% to-hit debuff
At 40% defense you should be over the softcap when facing AVs, so there should be no problems with "Average" game content.

50 Elec/Stone: Back in the old days of Nemmy Farms and kins being begged to run, this guy was great. The ride wasn't particularly fun, though. I ended up deleting him a while back to make room for my next brute project.
33 Elec/SD: Fun toon but, because I started to make one on blueside, I scrapped this and re-rolled as a.......
50 SS/SD: Great toon, great ride. /SD is amazing and (at least for me) leveling one is a breeze! My 2nd favorite brute and in the top 5 of my favorite 50s. Needed a LOT of inf to get running, though. A SS/WP is much better on a budget.
50 Fire/Fire: Pretty fun, a fairly strong toon. I haven't ever had the inf nor the desire to invest heavily in him, so he isn't all that he could be. The ride to 50 was decent. I personally don't like /fire that much, but that's just me! YMMV. -
Quote:Yup, pretty much this. I love my SS/WP to pieces, as it was my first-ever ride to 50 redside. I enjoyed every moment of it, even with just SOs it was a beast.SS/WP is a great combo, and I know many people that call it their 'main'.
SS/SD really shines when you throw a lot of inf at it. You're looking at a tremendous amount of damage output and being soft-capped - nigh unkillable. However, even a low-end shield build is going to cost about 400 million inf to be as survivable as a SS/WP with just SOs, simply because you're looking at around 33% defense before IO's kick in. If you're willing to invest, there is no brute combination that can outperform the AoE output of a SS/SD brute.
Some drawbacks on the SS/SD:
1) 3 click powers: Active Defense, Rage, Hasten
2) Very endurance heavy
3) Expensive to kit out.
4) Squishy prior to IO's (reliant upon carrying lucks
I really can't tell you which brute to make your main, because I think what influences most players is which one they find most enjoyable. You might find that the best brute combo is your favorite - you might not.
I guess the only way you'll find out is if you roll one of each.
It really depends on the amount of inf you're wiling to throw at this build. A fully IO'd
Billion+ inf SS/SD will out perform a SS/WP any day. However, as Tonality said, a SS/WP can shine with just simple SOs.
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to encourage you to give up on your SS/WP. I was just playing devil's advocate and giving you another view of the situation to help you make an informed decision. Since I really didn't know what you were after with this build, it was hard for me to say if you *really* wanted an SS/WP, that's all. My SS/WP was my main redsider for years, so that combo will always hold a special place in my heart!
In the end, play a combo that is fun for you. It sounds like you're really enjoying this brute, so don't give up on him based on my opinions! Just because something is FoTM or 'teh ubarzz' doesn't mean that it's the combo for you. Stick with the SS/WP, it should be an awesome main. If you do ever have the urge to roll another shield-er (and have a small fortune burning a hole in your pocket) , SS/SD would make a great main as well.

Hey all.
After finishing off my last MM project, my thugs/traps, a month ago, I've been having the urge to come back to redside and roll up another MM. Now, I don't like to play the same power sets twice in an AT until I've exhausted the rest of them, so I know that I'd rather not roll another Bots/, Thugs/, Dark/, or Traps/. Mercs have never really appealed to me, but I'm willing to try them if there is a particularly good combo.
I was thinking about a necro/therm or /pain, but I've wanted to lvl up a ninja/ MM since I deleted my 25 Nin/FF a few years back. What do you all think? Is there a particular combo of Nin/ or Necro/ that does especially well? I want to have a *fairly* smooth ride up (mostly solo) without sacrificing too much end-game potential, it at all possible.
Thanks in advance!

Quote:Eh, yes and no. It would really depend on the enemies faced (especially when comparing typed vs positional defense.) I've found that, on average, my semi-softcap'd /WP brute has approximately the same survivability as my /SDs. That is, however, when facing "average" game content (Read: farming). In other situations where high burst damage would cripple my /WP before it could heal back up, /SD would be the winner.Folks,
Again, than you greatly for your help with this. Based on what I see, I'm thinking 35ish% to the main types is pretty good and the regen will cover up that last bit. My guess is that with a build similar to Fin's that it would be approximately as survivable as a softcapped shield. Does that seem reasonable?
Now, that is *not* to say that Fin's build doesn't have a high amount of survivability. In fact, it would be able to handle almost anything thrown at it. I'm just simply saying that if you're planning on making this your main SF'er or AV soloer, you may be a *tad* disappointed in terms of survivability.
But overall, yes, it's an extremely strong build with a nice balance of damage and survivability. -
Quote:Ah, that would make more sense. I was under the impression that he was aiming solely for Energy/Neg/Fire/Cold. That was the main reason why I pointed out that I have no idea how well this would function given that s/l is the primary typed defense in-game, with F/C being very rare.Hmm, I thought you wanted S/L as well as E/NE/F/C, based on all those ToDs. As Alpha said, they don't help at all with E/NE/F/C--and they are a very expensive way to get S/L, considering that there are many better ways out there.
This is why I shouldn't post before having my morning coffee! -
If you're going for strictly defense without any AoE, it looks like a pretty solid build.
I wouldn't, however, skip Lightning Field. You can manage to retain your high defense, greatly lower your end consumption, and gain more damage all by switching Leadership for Hasten/LF and 6 slotting it with Multistrike. That's just me, YMMV.
~Alpha -
In terms of power choices, the build isn't too bad.
I can, however, say that if you are going for F/C/N/E defense, there is absolutely no reason to slot all of those ToDs. They are fairly expensive and are really only useful when going after Melee defense (they really aren't that helpful for s/l either). I personally wouldn't go for this but, if I did, I would use Mako instead. You could also 3 slot Pounding Slugfest and Pulverizing Fisticuffs in jab (which is a largely useless attack, imo) for an added 3% E/N defense. Also, switch the Imp. in tough to Aegis for even more F/C def. A Defense IO in place of the LoTG and a BoTZ switched for the Winter's Gift in CJ will push you to the F/C softcap. Finally, if you can afford it, the full numi set in Fast Healing gives you 44% E/N defense.

Although, it's never required, when building a toon for any kind of survivability purposes, I almost always take Tough/Weave. It makes it incredibly easy to softcap (as stated above) with the ability to stick a Steadfast Protection +3% in Tough and slot up weave for an added 7ish defense to all areas. Unless your build is extremely tight, I would definitely recommend it taking them.
-
Overall, the build is really isn't bad, but there are some things that could be improved upon.
1) The first thing that popped out at me is Taunt. IMHO, there's really no reason to take it, especially as a farmer.
2) I personally dislike Elec. Fences, especially when mixed with footstomp, as it removes all of the damage mitigation that SS/ provides. But that's just me, YMMV
3) Also, you were sporting a hefty end usage (over 1 end/sec) with only minor recovery in comparison.
4) Although this isn't really a problem, this build does look fairly expensive, especially for someone new to redside. I have no idea how you are going to come up with the inf for all of those LoTGs and uniques. But I guess you have some way of getting them....... I won't judge you, don't worry.

Yup, pretty much what KM said. Way back when I used an elec/stone as my main farmer, but almost exclusively with a kin. I just wasn't happy with the damage and speed of farming compared to that of my ss/wp. I did enjoy it, but would advise against it as a main farmer. Also, it does cost a good amount of inf to become usable, aiming for damage and recharge. You'd be better off investing in a SS/SD, Elec/SD, or SS/Fire. A good, cheap farmer that I still use to this day is a SS/WP. If you need a cheap build for that, I'd be more than happy to post mine.
If you do have your heart set on a elec/stone, then just follow what KM said.
