Well I have an idea, and thats a start.
Rad/anything should be able to put the hurt on many AVs, although Archery doesn't have any debuffs to help you with killing/surviving the AV like several of the other sets (Sonic's -res makes it top ranked last I heard). You should do pretty good, but it might be on the slow side.

Well honestly, Archery jumped out at me for the shear damage the powers say they do (I say this without any in-depth research)(So don't troll.). But everyone seems to be blasters these days, so I thought I'd switch it up.
Archery's damage is fairly good wrt Single Target, but Archery really shines in it's massive AoE damage (largely thanks to Rain of Arrows). If you really don't care which secondary you go with, the consensus seems to be that /Sonic will get you the best AV soloist.

Sonic will also get you the best GM soloist if you want to try for that.

Don't forget Procs, say slotting holds/immobs/stuns/etc in your T1/T2 Archery powers, which recharge very quickly.

As Kitsune said, Rad/Anything should do well against AVs.
So the question is, Does a Rad/Arc Defender have the right to be called an AV eater?

/Arch is more of an AoE powerhouse, but it's ST damage is decent. However, it is out shined by other sets (such as /sonic) in the ST department.
I can't say how a Rad/Arch would do against an AV, but with enough IOs, I'm sure it can do fairly well. Now, the question to ask yourself is this: Is it more important to you to have an /Arch toon, or are you willing to play another combo that is, for the most part, a better AV soloist with less investment.
Personally, I would go Rad/Sonic if you want a bad-*** AV soloer. I've been playing one for a while now, and it has slowly become my main.

So I was fiddling around in the character creation, and decided to make another defender. I hadn't tried archery yet, and radiation seemed appealing.
So thus I began my creation of the Rad/Arc Defender, and as I worked on the costume,I realized I really want to make an arch-villain eater. A character that will make an AV look like nothing more than a Boss.
