  1. You're still applying DPS wrong. That is the problem.

DPS is an average. It is the average damage done over time, and then reduced by the time to give you the average damage done each second. AS SUCH, you cannot say that your set would do more damage than a straight DPS set, because there is no DPS set. What you're talking about is burst damage. You're saying that your set would do more damage than a burst damage set. Not against a DPS set, but a burst damage set.

Your set would also be able to be compressed to DPS, since it's nothing more than an averaging of damage over time.

That is what people are saying. Not that your numbers are off, or that they don't get you, but that you are misapplying a term, and then drawing comparisons from that to how your set would work. It wouldn't work that way, because you're not using the term correctly.

And again, DoT powers do about 7% more damage over their timeframe than burst damage powers. Having a DoT over 3 seconds, with 3 tics of 75% of the burst-damage power's damage, would lead to 225% of the burst-damager's damage. That is VASTLY overpowered and underpowered at the same time (please, don't read that as balanced), because you'd be taking more damage in that time, too.

Fire Blast is one of the heaviest DoT blast sets that we have. And it's still mostly front-loaded. Try a fire blaster, and only use rain of fire. See how that goes for you.
  2. 1) Absolutely not. There's just no way to go through all of the potential problems with that idea in a post. From the tax issues, to the market skewing, to the ramifications of flooding the game with "rare" items, etc. I'd rather they did not sell in-game items that are currently part of the economy.

    2) Sounds way too powerful for an inspiration. These things would have to be very rare. Even then, it's not just the 'most impacted in PvP' that would get the advantage of these things. Everyone would, including those not as much impacted by the changes to PvP. As such, it would just add more imbalances to the PvP world, not less.

    3) I really have no opinion on this one.

I don't think there's ever been anything in-game that has increased cone angle. At one point, there was an enhancement for general range, and one for cone range, but that was it. They just merged the two together into one general Range enhancement.

I'm not sure if you can mess with cone angle or not, but it would be nice to see if we could get it.

Edit: the only problem I can see is what kind of value would you put on it? Right now, we can have cones of 15 degrees, and some are 180 degrees. Anything that makes the 15 degree cone much better would make the 180 degree cone almost into a PBAoE. Anything that kept the 180 degree cone pretty limited wouldn't even be noticeable on the 15 degree cone.

He was not being rude. He was merely pointing out that you should probably put more thought into your ideas before presenting them. AS is, you presented about half of an idea: a DoT set. Great. Now flesh it out. Give it nine powers. Or figure out how it's going to work. Do SOMETHING to it, rather than just throwing it out there like you just came up with it.

I will extend the courtesy that you did not have, and explain why you are wrong.

If the mob is weak and destructable with one shot, odds are the DOT will kill it in the same round or beginning of next. If the mob is a LT odds are the blaster will need two to three shots to kill it. A DOT Blaster will take 2 shots to kill it, but the LT will die after the third round, which the blaster is now using to commence to work off the next LT.
Except, there really aren't any "rounds" here. There are, but they take a fraction of a second. If you hit a weak minion with upfront damage, you might kill it in one shot. That's potential damage mitigation. If it takes 3 seconds to kill it with a different attack, it WILL get attacks off in that time. As such, a full DoT set will have less average mitigation, even if it does more damage, than any other Blaster set, unless it has other tricks to it.

The Lieut will get off even more attacks in the same timeframe.

[quote]In the case of bosses, the Blaster may take 5 to 6 rounds to polish him off, since now we talking so many rounds, it is quite possible that the DOT Blaster would defeat the Boss in just as many rounds.[quote]

Except that you haven't factored in healing, yet. Basically, the longer it takes you to kill the enemy, the more HP he will regain. A character that is purely DoT will have to apply more damage to counteract that healing. The harder the enemy, the more damage the DoT Blaster will need to do over the front-loaded Blaster. So, it is very likely that the DoT Blaster will take longer than the Front-loaded Blaster to kill the same enemy.

    Quote:
In the case of EBs, and AVs; I believe the DOT Blaster is better off, for normally the Blaster is going to spend in excess of 12 hits to bring the EB down, and many more for an AV. With these many rounds, the DOTs have plenty of time to accumulate, see their damage cycle completed, and have the next cycle do its thing. Bottom line, the DOT will kill EBs and AVs much faster than a normal Blaster.
No, it won't. Unless the DoT is MUCH more damaging than a front-loaded character (and this messes with Recharge times as well, based off of the power formulas), the EBs and AVs will regenerate a decent amount of health during the DoT. Even stacking many DoTs on the AV won't completely counteract the healing that they have, since thye have more HPs than even a boss. And in that time, your set has no other mitigation to help the Blaster survive the incoming damage brought about by that AV/EB.

    Quote:
A way to look at my proposal of the DOT Blaster is like this: A normal Blaster will have a higher Damage per Second, but a DOT Blaster will have a higher Damage per stock of time.
This makes no sense. DPS is a term for the average damage done over time by a character. As such, it IS Damage per stock of time.

    Quote:
What needs to be agreed to, is how much weaker is the DOT per second, and how many seconds of effect it has. For instance say a normal blast has 1 unit of damage, a DOT could be 0.75 units of damage for 3 rounds. With this in mind, lets see the effect of stacking over 5 seconds:

Blaster gets 5 attacks and thus get 5 units of damage over 5 seconds
DOT Blaster gets 5 attacks as well, but the damage is as follows:
    Attack Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5 total
    #1 0.75 0.75 0.75 - - 2.25
    #2 - 0.75 0.75 0.75 - 2.25
    #3 - - 0.75 0.75 0.75 2.25
    #4 - - - 0.75 0.75 1.50
    #5 - - - - 0.75 0.75

    Grand Total: 9 units

It would seem to me, there is nothing gymp with a DOT Blaster to me.
Well yeah, if you make up numbers, of course it won't seem to be gimped. But let's take a look at how current DoT attacks compare to other attacks right now.

    For a Defender:

Gloom: scale damage 1.76 over 3.6 seconds

Lightning Bolt, Ice Blast, Power Blast: scale damage 1.64

Thus, the DoT aspect of Gloom seems to give it a 7% increase in damage over other set's comparable attacks.

As such, your set would likely be about 7% more damaging over time. Is that enough to counter something like an AV's regen? Probably depends on the AV. But is IS a factor that will need to be looked at, especially since there is no other mitigation in the set as you proposed.

It's horrible for DPS, and DPA (I think). Basically, it is the highest-damaging attack in the set, barely beating out Frozen Touch. However, the Lethal component to it makes it a bit worse than FT, since it's a more resisted damage type. Also, the longer animation, and longer recharge time, and worse secondary effect, make it not that useful. Pretty much every other single-target attack in the Ice Melee line is better than GIS over time.
  6. How do these vehicles impact strafing? Can you strafe on a motorcycle, for instance?

How about activating powers? Would they work in/on the vehicles? How about even just toggle powers? Would they stay on?

    Circle of Thorns

Also, where are you now? If the mission is in Cap Au Diable, but you are in Port Oakes (or any zone not Cap Au Diable), then it won't show up on your map. Make sure you are in the correct zone for your mission.
  8. EA doesn't take Accuracy enhancements, and is auto-hit.

Vanden - slot it for both Defense and EndMod. By Frankenslotting from both Defense and EndMod sets, you can easily get ED-capped Defense, Recharge, and EndMod values on it.

Support have probably all gone home which was why I wondered if a kind player might spare me 2 reactivate slots for past accounts - just think if we do sub up that'll mean more game time free for them
The support staff has NOT gone home. We have GMs and customer support 24/7. How quickly they will get to you, however, is another matter entirely.

    Finally Hit 50

    1) It will unlock automatically. Just go and create a new character, and the option should be available.

    2) Your 50 stays around, exactly as he is. You can still do all of the content in the game, including any arcs that you may have missed, through the Ouroborus system. You can do any of the TFs that you haven't done, or any number of things to keep improving him, if you want to.

    3) Your second build basically allows you to have two distinct builds on the same character. It's basically like a respec that allows you to keep your current build as well. You start the build over at level 1, then level it up like you were doing a respec. You will need to slot him by purchasing or making new enhancements, though. What it could let you do is have a build for PvP, and one for PvE. Or one for Teaming, and one for Solo. Things like that.

This came out about two years ago, when Castle and I think Ghost Widow (mostly Ghost Widow, since she was new at the time) went diving through the data, and they found that the Threat mechanism worked completely different than what was thought at the time.

At the time, it was thought that Taunt was a binary mechanism for the most part, where you needed twice the Taunt of another Tanker to pull aggro off of him. While this functioned in a great majority of cases, there were closet cases where it didn't seem to work right.

Many Tanker forumites (and some from other forums, too), took part in testing this when Castle brought it to my attention. I think I bugged Castle a lot with my questions on the subject at the time. It was found to work out pretty much as that formula describes. Tankers are so great at holding aggro due to two factors: 1) They have the highest AT mod, and more importantly, 2) They usually have much higher TauntDurationRemaining than other ATs at most points, giving them 1000s more Threat at a given time.

This knowledge isn't as common as it was when it first came out, and in normal gameplay, it doesn't matter. So I'm not surprised that you haven't heard of it. But it is how it works.

    This is wrong.

    Threat = Damage * DebuffMod * AI Mod * RangeMod * AT Mod * (1000 * TauntDurationRemaining)

    That is straight from Castle.

If you deal twice the damage to the enemy, you have twice the Threat rating.
  13. If you have the Watchman Accolade, but do NOT have access to the sword at the tailor, contact support. They should be able to fix it for you. It might have just given you the message, but not correctly set that flag on your character.

Well, the Rikti swords come from getting the Watchman Accolade, meaning that would would have needed to have gotten in on a Rikti raid to have gotten it accidentally.

Are you sure it wasn't some other sword that you unlocked?

  16. Those SHOULD be the two top powers in the Electric Melee line. If Lightning Rod isn't listed as your Tier 9 power, something is very, very wrong.
  17. We really can't tell you the answer to any of those questions right now.

Right after release was the highest point, I think, or maybe right after CoV came out. But with the recent issues, we haven't seen the numbers to be able to tell you exactly, or if the high number has changed.

And only the Devs know what the current number of subscriptions are, although they usually release those in their quarterly reports.
  18. Okay, stupid question first, to get it out of the way: your character is a Broadsword/something scrapper?

It'll tell you that you've unlocked things sometimes even if you don't have the required powerset, so just want to check.

Other than that, it should just open up at any Tailor once you've met the requirements. Remember that the weapons tend to be towards the bottom of the list at the tailor, so you might need to scroll down a bit to see it.

Ice Patch is a great power for a Tanker. Adds a great amount of survivability to a Tanker. Sure, the cast time is kinda long, but it's still a good power. I'd probably go so far to say that if you're not going to take Ice Patch, you probably are better off going with another secondary. At that point, other sets have just as much control or more, and better damage.

Just because the "job" of a Tanker is to take damage, doesn't mean that they can't dish it out.

Especially because doing more damage helps build Threat. It's also good for helping with those pesky -ToHit debuffs.
  21. Well, if I were to drop two powers from the secondary on an Ice/Ice, it would probably be the two sword powers. They are two of the weaker attacks, actually, in terms of performance, and since you're stuck with Frozen Fists, they'd be the two I'd go with.

That said, since you didn't mention the Primary, Permafrost can be dropped if you need it to be, as well. While it's a great IO holder, and the slow resistance can be nice at times, it doesn't do too much for you on its own, and can be dropped if you want one of the swords (and if you do take one of the swords, the normal Ice Sword tends to be the better choice over time).
  22. This forum is mainly filled with faitly nice people. Certainly far better of an average than most internet forums.

However, on any given day, there are going to be some people that just woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Are they going to take it out on people that probably don't deserve it? Probably. And they will sometimes apologize for doing just that. Heck, even I have a bad day every now and then. I usually try to keep things civil regardless, but there are just some times when the angry Aett comes out.

There are also people, who are called trolls, who go and outright pick a fight just because the internet anonymity gives them cover from actual trouble. These people are often times combative right from the get go, and those threads quickly become a flamefest (usually directed at said troll). While we all know that we shouldn't feed the troll, sometimes it's just way too fun.

There are also some people that, while their OP is civil, take any disagreement of their idea as a personal insult. They can't separate out that people don't like their idea, but are fine with the poster (well, up until they take it personally, and usually attack back). These people do need to learn that not everyone is going to think that their ideas are the greatest ever, and that civil disagreements can occur.

Yes, we should all try to keep it civil. However, we're all just human, and sometimes we let our emotions get the best of us. The only thing that we can do is try our best, and try to apologize when we can't.
  23. Yeah, I was gonna say, I don't think it's started yet.
  24. And don't allow villains to do it at all, since the Devs hate villains. And Tankers. No Tanker should be able to do this respec. No way no how.

But yeah, aside from the fact that Lemur Lad is an unmitigated jackass, I think this is a good idea.
