  1. Hello

I've been through the firewall settings, checked that the EU client hasn't suddenly decided to start from a totally different location, and even searched the boards with a fine toothed comb (Lighthouse's thread on Connection et al appears to have broken links in it and when i try to navigate the support section of the NCSoft website, I get a lot about lag during gameplay, but nothing about that old chestnut: The Connecting.... #6 (and upwards) problem.

I shall post the system info:

I'm not brilliant at finding actual broadband connection data so any help there would be appreciated. Like I said, Lighthouse's links (including the Network tool) appear to be broken and finding them within the NCSoft site is proving nigh on impossible.

And yes, I've even tried restarting the PC and seeing if that works
  2. "Tut tut!"

Doctor Wilhelmina Edna Coyote stared at the poster slapped across a wall opposite her apartment building in Cap Au Diable.

"Sloppy writing. Still, you can't expect a poster writer to be as intelligent as a scientist... such as my self."

She adjusted her lab goggles, smoothing down strands of frizzy grey hair which had escaped from the tight bun she wore on her head. The mature scientist fished a compact and lipstick out of her tatty black leather handbag, and proceeded to apply. Where the waxy lipstick met flesh, there was a brief sizzling followed by the faint smell of lavender and chloraform.

"Oh poot! Looks like I'm going to have to have another tune up. I can't very well be kissing delegates and burning their flesh!"

She gave a short, sharp cough and turned her attention from freshening up to making a date in her calendar. This involved putting the compact away and retrieving a bulky device which looked similar to a cellphone from the early '80s.

"Dr Coyote calling The Workshop! Please confirm my appointments for..." she checked the poster again, "the 26th of June, at 6pm."

There followed a series of bleeps and the sound of metal grating on metal.

    "You have no appointments, USERNAME."

She sighed and was about to confirm the date when the robotic voice chirped,

    "You NEVER have any appointments."

"Yes, thank you CHIPS! Remind me to reprogramme your sarcasm protocols when I return. And confirm the appointment."

Whirrs and clicks followed. After several minutes, Doctor Coyote sighed.

    "Please!"

"Appointment confirmed. Where is this appointment taking place?"

    Without thinking, Doctor Coyote replied.

    "Cap Au Daible."

"Cap Au Daible does not exist, is hidden, or is not online at the moment."

Doctor Coyote grunted. "Just put down the University! And that reminds me - I must update your custom dictionary. Doctor Coyote out."

The woman replaced the bulky handset and fished out another object: it was a large picture in a frame, signed in an illegible script. She gently kissed it, causing the plastic cover to bubble, and placed it back in her handbag.

"Soon, my love. Soon you'll know who I am."

And with that, Doctor Coyote strolled dreamily to the ferry.
  3. Mission Transporter and any kind of Jet Pack, temp powers such as Revolver, Shivans (etc), and temp powers granted from SFs are disabled.

Master of... for the Shadow Shards (Dr Quaterfield specifically) should be given 100 reward merits too, and some free aspirin in the mail

I personally think the regular Freedom Phalanx TFs, and indeed the extra ones (Hess/Katie/Kahn), are a bit too easy to Master. Also the new Posi grants you a Jet Pack... which would be instantly disabled.

And on the flip side, SFs seem to be rife with faceplanting (especialy Silver Mantis *shakes fist*)

I'm all for additional challenges added to TFs and SFs, but perhaps for new content that is deemed worthy of it. Of course, if the rest of the FP TFs are rewritten... I can dream can't I?
  4. Arctic_Princess

    Death Emotes.

William Shatner Death: along similar lines to Eiko-Chan's suggestion, I'd like to see a Shatner death emote. Clutching the chest, arms out in supplication, a fading monologue...

But seriously, that would be awesome!

I haven't paid much attention to it since i17, but do our characters have the random KO sound effects, the same as NPCs?

And a big YES to ragdoll deaths.
  5. With regards to Detention Field/Sonic Cage (and then Black Hole/Dimension Shift) - Do the former powers count as phased? If so, then does a Player Character using Phase Shift or similar get to attack them?

It's something I've always wondered about but was afraid to ask.

If Detention/Sonic became phase powers then that might open up an interesting reason to take Phase Shift. By casting Detention Field, the Def/MM/Con has access to a specialised Hold.

Of course if it doesn't currently work like that then would changing the effect of Detention Field to a phase power be breaking the cottage rule?
  6. There is a way to sate frustration at NPC civilians... the MA!

Sure, there's no game reward for filling a map with powerless minions dressed as civs but it should go some way to alleviating the annoying little ... people.

But as far as making them defeatable inside Mayhems, I doubt this will happen. The closest we get is leading a hostage to their doom. And I see the swarms of civs as a distraction. Yes alt-tab can be frustrating but, for me at least, it creates a sense that you really are causing mayhem as a villain.
  7. I'm on Skype. There's more than enough 'real' voice acting on there

Also, there's no way of censoring people as it's not a written format but something which a moderator would need to listen to. Give a person a microphone and, 9 times out of 10, they WILL swear.

Also voice actors (professionals) have the benefit of recording studios with proper mics, mixing tables, and a professionally trained sound engineer and editor. There's a lot of work goes into it. More than I've just typed even

Giving a fanboi/girl a mic and expecting them to make a professional sounding recording is a tall order. I'm sure there are some players out there with access to wondrous technology and who may even be professional actors, but it's up to them to pitch their talent to Paragon Studios.

User Generated (i.e. Public Created) voice stuff is okay for things like modding, which may have a limited audience. But for an MMO that is striving to appear professional and slick, in order to compete, it would likely be a PR disaster.

EDIT: Forgot to say Welcome to The Forums!
  8. I was running through Mercedes Sheldon's arcs t'other day and 'The Magic Man' is a nice way of unlocking the Orobouros Portal.

Similarly redside, Marshall Brass seems to be the best (and only?) way of unlocking OB.

So I just have a simple suggestion that two arcs are written to give players another choice of unlocking the OB portal.

Now I know that the 'Ubelmann The Unknown' arc heroside also unlocks OB, but it's quite a long arc and the contact doesn't suddenly pop up in your contacts window when you hit level 20 and also unlock the Midnighter Club. In fact it's quite possible to bypass the contacts altogether, what with Striga, Faultline and Croatoa offering more attractive ways of gaining levels in the 20s-30s (i.e. not having to travel from Indy, to Perez, to The Hollows, to Atlas, to Steel, to Indy.... etc etc). Let alone TFs, cape missions, and safeguards.

I am also aware that Marshall Brass does not auto unlock so I would suggest the following:

Heroes get a new arc that involved time travel
Villains get a new arc that involves time travel - and the contact unlocks at level 20

That's not quite correct. You'll get the chance to choose Family as the AE categorises them, but they'll mainly be Mooks (especially at low levels).

You can, however, always create a custom group of Mooks and rename them.

Or, seeing as The Family are pretty easy enemies anyway, use the lv 20 ones and have them scale down to 5-20.

OP: Family could be a group that gets involved in this sort of thing. They're mainly drugs traffickers with a penchant for explosives and old-fashioned shootouts, but I see little reason to bar them from running what is, effectively, a slave trade.
  10. In a galaxy very close to this one.. um.. in fact it is this one...

Mr Junkyard, proprietor of Mr Junkyard's Happytime Scrapyard, has uncovered a map to buried treasure.

Now he's not the sort of person to risk his neck traipsing around searching for treasure, especially as the rumours of the location pinpointed on the map allude to terrible ghosts, ghouls, spirits, and... er... landmines.

Will you uncover the secret of the buried treasure? Will the Galaxy Police Department foil your graverobbing exploits? Will you ever get dog spit out of your clothes?!

All these questions, and more, will be answered when you take the plunge and join the hunt for Buried Treasure!

To be honest, that describes a lot of men - regardless of sexuality. And some lesbians I know too.

The problem with 'acting normally' is another 'back-handed compliment' thing for me. Who gets to define normal anyway?
  12. Of course, it'd need to be renamed the Baroness coat. And the Witch Wing items would need to be ported over for Male and Huge - Warlock Lace?

Several of the newer jackets can do the job of the Baron Coat, for female models. Admittedly they don't have the occult option but they still look smart.

As it stands I think that the Baron Coat (and other options, including the snazzy, pointy shoes) work well for male and huge figures because they were seemingly designed to work for them. The female model is renowned for its ability to muck up the look of a chest piece due to, well, its chest pieces! Hence females got Witch, which accentuates their bosoms and has a lacy/Ann Summers feel. Because we all know that all witches are really sexy sirens, with perfectly coiffed hair...

I too would like to see a few more sensible female options though, instead of some of the more fanboi-ish 'Look at my chest!'/'Look at my behind!' costumes.

/signed on an updated/more options for retro jackets and uniforms. The female half-jacket (sleeveless) would also be awesome for the male/huge model. It has a certain Aladdin feel about it.

Yes, sometimes I'm really that thick.

Although Positron on Redside has a God Mode - I think it's Invulnerability.

It's a total cheat, but imagine a God Mode on a Rad/Rad *drools*

    ***

OP - It's a nice idea but I think there would need to be drawbacks imposed too. Got an armoured costume that gives +5% resist? Well your movement and recharge speeds are slowed by 5% (or similar). And slotting should not, in that case, allow you to compensate for the debuff.

Also levels at which costume slots become available would need to be looked at. And the degree of boost/debuff would have to, imo, be scaled so at lv 20 it was fairly minor, at 30 much better, and at 40 something more interesting. VEATs and those with Hallowe'en Salvage would not get additional slots at 10 or whenever they hand in the salvage, respectively.

I think there are certainly more interesting ways than just armour too:

Necromancer Robes/Gauntlets/Pendant: Boosts your secondary effects but makes you weak against, say, fire, cold and negative energy.

And to make it not feel at all like other MMOs, it'd be nice if it was just one item that defined the 'costume slot'. No bonuses except a chance to slot in the 'costume slot'.

And finally, before I sign off with a 'good suggestion, unlikely to be implemented' - If the bonus had an indirect affect on gameplay then I could see it being popular enough to be worth the time to develop:

Costume Slot is created. Choice between Super/Villain Group or 'Solo'.
Bonus prestige earned whenever wearing the 'official' SG/VG costume. Bonus inf earned whenever wearing your character's 'Flagship' costume. Bonuses are stackable with Day Job powers.

Anyway, good idea, unlikely to be implemented

As I may have said already, or has been said by someone else (it has been nearly a year since I read this thread through), I don't define a person by their sexuality. I do, however, define them by how much they go on about it.
Whilst that's a very right on attitude and covers bases (and I am only singling the quote out because I hope it will back up my next point), I think gay men, lesbians, transgendered people and bisexuals have as much right to go on about it as other people do.

If I were so inclined I could raise the same points in forum posts about straight couples who are getting married. I mean, why do they have to go on about it?

Personally, whilst I am comfortable gaming with total strangers who assume, before I tell them, that I'm straight (as most people on this MMO do (I have no experience of other MMOs)), I'm not afraid of mentioning that my boyfriend is tutting as I play the game, for example. Not everyone who identifies as LGBT has the luxury of that. Therefore if I'm guilty of going on about it on here, then so what?

Most issues carry a degree of '(un)comfortability'. If people want to believe that sexuality is just about sex then perhaps some open discussion of it can disprove that black-and-white view.

For those that find it distasteful, they have the option of looking away. Same as any other subject.
  15. Woot!

    Lady Grey is doable again!

Just a quick Q: So now that the AE 'Fab' map has been changed, will we see the Regular content 'Fab' map be changed to stop pets jumping around and other weird stuff happening?

I will try the mission again and send a bug report if necessary.

To be fair, a LGBT Supergroup/Villaingroup is not particularly different to a SG/VG comprised of, say, older players (i.e. 30+), or an SG/VG with a strict Greek Pantheon only theme.

And if people want to group together for different reasons, then why does there even have to be a discussion of the reasons behind that?

IIRC the OP just wanted to know if there were any LGBT players out there who fancied forming a SG/VG. Would the same questions be asked of people who formed a SG/VG because they all worked late shifts and it was convenient to team together at that time, with people they gradually got to know, and felt comfortable with?

A Heartbreak Breaking Story # 378511 by @ Arctic Princess

A Hero Loses His Powers: At least I think he does, this is another one I ended up quitting out of frustration right at the very end. But Danny, one of the Nuclear 90, was captured by the Council to have experiments performed on him, and I'm guessing that it leaves him powerless at the end, and his teammates all got killed.
Thank you for reviewing, Bubbawheat. The problem of the evil Council Laser is finally in the process of being fixed, along with some errant animations for captives/captors and a warning about the defeat all in the final mission (I facepalmed when I realised I didn't put the thing in there...).

When I published my arc for the contest, something happened to the Minion in Council Laser and so the patrols consisted of Lts and Bosses, being horribly difficult at the time (this was pre-custom exp sliders) and awarding no experience for defeat, on a defeat all...

Then the changes to AE came about and as we're not getting a fix for the hotfix (!) just yet, I finally decided to go in and do the changes necessary. Just awaiting confirmation from Doc Aeon that the changes I've made don't break any rules and it should be back up.
  18. It's also meant to be a trial. Hence the increased difficulty.

It's one of the trials that does not reward 'Run in and smash!' tactics.

There are enough external resources (paragonwiki, for example) to enable teams to plan ahead.

I am therefore against the idea of 'standardising' this trial.
  19. Has no one read the update on this? Black Scorpion and Dr Aeon are working with the other developers on a suitable solution.

It was originally intended to be a short-term fix. Then people found out that it wasn't just allies with powers that affected rewards but, nonsensically, destructible objects and custom 'Person'/all escorts/hostages too.

Shortly before i17 hit live, Dr Aeon made a post to say that the fix needed more work and would probably be going live alongside Going Rogue (possibly issue 18, possibly longer).

    ***

In similar news, I'm still smarting that the 'Lead To' objectives only work for Lead To mission exit and Lead To the location of another NPC (but if the NPC you're leading the escort to moves, the lead to location doesn't change so in effect you are leading the escort to the place where the NPC originally spawned...). SO the 'amazing' Lead To objectives update in i17 was, well, poor.
  20. Good story and nice mission structure, especially the Hollows->Frostfire->Trolls bit.

Also nice to see an SF without a magical component!

Or indeed the involvement of Arachnos. At all.

With the GR dialogue choices being apparent in the i17 content, perhaps the SF could choose to side with either the Trolls or the Outcasts in order to further their goals?

I'm not sure without writing a bunch of stuff myself how the two groups would differ in their involvement if chosen as an ally. I suppose the Outcasts reflect the more Vigilante aspect, because Frostfire used to be a Hero (albeit briefly). The Trolls are nothing more than drug-addled muscle boys BUT they could have a good reason for wanting to close the tunnel between Sirens and Steel, and indeed they are fond of explosives...

And the notion of the tunnel either remaining open or being closed brings me to my first point of criticism:

TFs and SFs are a self-contained story. They don't affect the game World directly (with the exception of the LGTF). So the end of the SF would need to resolve that the tunnel is irreparably closed. Perhaps there could be a swarm of either Trolls or Outcasts at the end of the SF, a zone event with perhaps a badge attached, in Port Oakes and Steel Canyon? The Troll/Outcast riot could depend on who was chosen as an ally.

My second point of criticism is that the Hollows and Steel Canyon aren't joined. Even if this was explained away by the sewer network, why not just pop your head up anywhere you liked and raid the nearest bank?

My third point (not necessarily criticism) will start by stating that I would LOVE to see Midas's Lair! However, as things go its inclusion would mean that the final mission would have to be uber epic: The team has just swarmed through a golden throne room and defeated Midas. That's awesome. So the final mission would have to be equally impressive but in a different way.

So, here's my suggestion for the final mission:

Upon flooring Frost/Family AV (as an AV - why not?) and grabbing the loot, either the Trolls or Outcasts (depending on earlier choice), get mad. They've been planting explosives in this big tunnel and if the team sticks around, they'll be stranded in Steel Canyon.

So, cue cutscene of explosions! Atta or Frostfire drops a match or pushes a plunger.

    *SPOILER WARNING*

Similarly to the end of the new villain arc (from Leonard), there's fire everywhere and the team must race through the tunnel to a safe exit point.

Again, using the map->outdoor zone tech shown in the new Adair arc, the team is deposited back in Port Oakes, or at least must run through a facility/warehouse/whatever to get back to the Rogue Isles.

    *END SPOILER WARNING*

So, some ideas for you there. Rough ideas that may be full of holes, but ideas nonetheless.
  21. Some kind of Snake Charmer power?

Or just call it [Charmer] to avoid confusion with actual Snakes.

Either a Single Target Hold, Sleep, or Confuse? Same kind of cooldown as the Mission TP.

Or just have a snake charming emote.

Of course, you could always have a [Summon Snake] temp power... Just make sure it's a regular Snake Lt. and not an Elder Viper Assassin!

Wrist capes that aren't attached to the shoulders could be fun.

And of course jewellery details (big bangles, anklets, etc)
  22. PPD Precinct

    23:55

The desk clerk was considering how quiet a night it had been when the doors burst open and a man in an obvious state of alarm barrelled into the room.

"Ghosts! Hundreds of them! Out to get me! And the others!"

    "Sir, please calm down."

"But they're out for blood! For vengeance! For what we did!"

The desk clerk was used to this kind of outburst. He retrieved a notepad from his pocket and carefully approached the distressed man.

"It's okay sir. You're safe here. Now start by telling me your name."

The man adjusted his spectacles. The desk sergeant's voice was very soothing.

    "Thomas Cogsworth."

"Well Thomas, what has happened? You mentioned ghosts?"

Thomas adjusted his spectacles again. He held something in his hand which had not gone unnoticed by the police officer. He brushed down his blue tank top, and ran a hand through his hair. Beads of sweat had formed on his high forehead.

"I was wandering the streets. It was dark, and foggy. There were men, I think. They seemed intent on harming anything that came into their path. So I ran away."

The officer scribbled notes and nodded. It sounded to him as if a civilian had strayed into Dark Astoria. Most residents of Paragon knew to stay away from there.

"Do you live in Paragon, Thomas?"

The question appeared to vex Thomas at first. He blinked several times. He continued to roll whatever he was holding in his hand around, as if it were a rosary bead or some item of comfort.

"Sir, are you from around these parts? Because it seems as if you strayed into a neighbourhood that most regular folks know to avoid. Now, I'm not implying anything, but I need to know how you got past the security guards stationed at the entrance to Dark Astoria."

    "I showed them this."

Thomas's voice was distant. He reached inside his left trouser pocket and produced a battered, laminated card. The desk sergeant took it and studied it.

    "Ah so you're a cape?"

    "A what?"

"Sorry, I meant to say Hero."

    Thomas shook his head sadly.

"Used to be. Can't remember. Everything is fuzzy."

"It says here that you were called Techpath. And it lists some of your abilities: Technopathy? What's that?"

But Thomas didn't answer. He had become lost in his own World. The police officer guided the man over to a seat and poured water from a cooler into a plastic cup for him.

"Just you sit there and relax, Thomas. I'll take care of the paperwork. Mind if I keep your ID for now?"

Thomas nodded. The police officer returned to his desk and began consulting his notes, typing them up on the computer terminal. He eyed the man cautiously, looking for signs of madness that might make him jump up and try something. Those ghosts could do strange things to people.

The desk sergeant waited until the man began to close his eyes, signalling sleep. He picked up the phone and dialled a short number. He spoke very softly into the receiver.

"Hey Paulie? I need an ID on a guy called Thomas Cogsworth... Yeah, he's sitting here in the station. Used to be a cape called Techpath. How long can you... Yeah, looks like I might need to put him in a cell overnight. He came in all crazy... Yeah yeah, used my charm on him. Hehe. Okay Paulie... yeah, you too."

The soft click of the receiver stirred Thomas from his dozing. He blinked in the harsh strip-lighting of the PPD station.

"Now Thomas, I'm gonna see about getting you a place to stay tonight. I can't promise that it'll be cosy or even warm but you'll be safe. How does that sound?"

"Uh, yes officer. That sounds... that sounds good."

Thomas clearly wasn't with it. The desk sergeant helped Thomas up, and led him to a door at the back of the entrance lobby.

"Now don't worry, I'm not putting you in here 'cause I think you've done anything."

The sergeant smiled. Thomas seemed to register what was happening. He nodded and attempted a smile of his own. It looked like pain on his worn face.

The officer let Thomas get used to the single crib bed. He had placed the man in the first available cell, away from a couple of drunks who might cause the man distress when they woke up. The police officer said goodnight, closed the door, locked it, and looked through the hatch. Thomas was still clutching something in his hand. He just stood there, looking up at the high, barred window.

The officer closed the spyhole window, muttering a goodnight.

Lines of armoured women stood at attention.

They were being addressed by a figure fluctuating in transparency: Her voice was like a death knell but occasionally a tinge of Italian American crept in.

"Sisters. The Widow Corps has been charged with a special task. My Lord Recluse has discovered something within Paragon City that may aid us in our struggle against the incursions made by Ms. Liberty and her paramilitary thugs."

There was no movement from the lines of women. They looked like an alternative terracotta army. Just waiting for the word to spring to life.

All except one. She was fidgeting. Something was causing her distress. Her sisters did not move; they did not make a compassionate gesture of placing a hand on her shoulder to stop the subtle swaying of her body as she fought with some unseen force.

Ghost Widow was not unaware of the situation.

"Before I continue, would Doctor Moon kindly step forward."

    It was not a request.

The agitated Widow gained a measure of composure and stepped out of her line. She made her way to the platform where her Patron stood.

Ghost Widow cast her hands out and a soft breeze lifted the Widow up to the platform. Angry spirits accompanied her but they were not permitted to devour the soul of the woman.

"Sisters, this woman is the key."

    Doctor Moon was startled.

"She knows about the power that Arachnos seeks. She may not remember it, but she soon will."

A line of red-clad Fortunatas nodded.

Ghost Widow looked at Doctor Moon, the spirits surrounding her settled the Widow gently on the ground beside her. She raised a hand in comfort, placing it on the Doctor's shoulder. Moon resisted the urge to reel from the ice cold touch. She willed herself to remain in control.

"We are heading to Dark Astoria tomorrow. We will be investigating an old base of operations, used by a group of so-called Heroes during the First Rikti War. You are to strip the place of any remaining technology. You will make your return to the Rogue Isles by cargo ship. Talos Island will be your rendezvous point. And you will make sure that no-one knows why you are there."

Ghost Widow looked at Doctor Moon again. A smile played on her pale lips. She returned her gaze to the Widow Corps.

    "You are dismissed."

The assembled women filed out of the chamber. A handful of Fortunatas remained. Ghost Widow removed her steadying hand from Doctor Moon.

"And now sister, we must make to extract what you know from that pretty head of yours."

Ghost Widow signalled to her psychic handmaidens.

    "Prepare the altar!"

    Doctor Moon shivered inside.
  24. Somewhere in Dark Astoria
    May 31, 2010
    Time Unspecified

A man wandered the streets of Dark Astoria, lost in his thoughts but perhaps not lost in knowing where he was. At least subconsciously.

His thick mop of hair was greying, his thin tortoiseshell glasses glimmered in the half light. Mist parted in his wake as he patrolled the streets, searching for something.

He wore a light blue, diamond-patterned tanktop over a crisp cotton shirt. His trousers were a camel-coloured twill. Not that it mattered in the murky, fog-drenched land of Dark Astoria.

He was also clutching something in his right hand. Tightly. As if the act of removing it, letting it drop on the cement paving slabs, would cause a tear in the fabric of reality to open up.

And he was humming. It was a half-remembered tune. He was not a musical man.

The man stopped at a junction. In the distance he thought he could make out the rising of a church spire. It wasn't where he was intending to go.

A woman crossed the street a few metres away. He called out to her, but she didn't turn to look at him. Instead she continued to walk with her shoulders hunched until she disappeared in the mist. He quickened his pace, hoping to talk to her. He wanted answers. But by the time he reached the spot where she had vanished, there was no trace of her.

He scratched his head with his left hand and adjusted his spectacles.

There seemed to be no other people on the streets. If the man had been wearing a watch he could have checked it for the time. At least that might give him a clue of where he was, and what he was looking for.

The wind picked up. Billowing clouds of water vapour hurtled down the street. The man shivered. He wished he had brought a coat. If he was totally honest, he wasn't aware of what had happened before he'd arrived here.

Then the sound of footsteps came to his ears. At first they sounded like high heels, but as they came closer the man registered the slow, almost foot-scraping nature of the sound. Lurching shapes appeared as silhouettes in the mist.

The man's instinct for danger kicked in. He spotted a small alleyway and silently ducked in, away from the main street. The cloud continued to conceal the shapes as they lumbered past. The man seemed to be contemplating what they might be, as if he was unfamiliar with the denizens of the neighbourhood. He scratched his head again and pushed his spectacles up. Then he felt the object in his right hand. He rolled it between his palm and fingers.

And then he took the softly-glowing ring and slipped it on his finger.
  25. Up 'N' Away Burger
    Gemini Park, Galaxy City

Helena flashed her FBSA ID card at the acne'd youth and her colleague Mark followed behind with a toothy grin.

It was still busy at the tail end of the lunchbreak, a few business types in suits were huddled round a table discussing interest rates and stock. Helena recognised a courier who was frequently arriving at Freedom Corps to deliver special packages to MAGI. Of course the guy was wearing civvies today, instead of his usual bright orange robe and kevlar chestplate. She smiled and waved at him as she followed the employee to the storeroom.

"Miss Hammond, a pleasure to see you again."

Helena and Mark were greeted by the round, red face of Up 'N' Away's marketing manager - Herbert Allsworth. Helena had met Herbert on numerous occasions but they had never really developed a strong working relationship. This was due to the fact that Helena thought he was a slimeball, and she found it amusing that he worked for a company whose employees looked like they had been dipped in hot fat.

Mark introduced himself and Helena explained why they were visiting.

"We've had more complaints, from local residents. Now I know that Up 'N' Away seems to get more complaints of this nature than other business in the city..."

    "All unfounded of course."

"At the moment they are. That's why we're here. Although the traces of sodium azide in the Nicoise salad six months ago made for an interesting investigation."

Herbert's already scarlet face blushed a brighter red. Helena secretly hoped this wasn't another case of secondary mutation: The man could have lit the main strip of Steel Canyon all by himself. She continued, paying no attention to the wide grin on Mark's face.

"So we need an up-to-date list of the ingredients stored here. You know the drill, Mr Allsworth."

Herbert nodded and dabbed his forehead with a spotted handkerchief that had been residing in the front pocket of his slighty-too-small suit jacket.

    * * *

Mark and Helena stood outside Up 'N' Away Burger. Helena was now in possession of a thick manilla envelope, crammed full of paperwork pertaining to the delightful ingredients used at the fast food joint.

"So, reckon they've been using black market stuff again to make their beef patties?"

Mark smirked. Although he too was an investigator, he was usually assigned to the higher-profile cases such as businesses who liked to dump toxic waste into the Red River. As a result, he was not in Crey's good books.

"If they have then we can hand the files over to the PPD. And if we're talking eight foot super soldiers, we can let the spandex brigade loose on them."

The GIFT investigators were about to head back to Freedom Corps when Helena's sixth sense kicked in. She spun on her heels and moved to fall back, dropping the envelope. Mark dived to catch her. She was shaking, but apparently alive and unharmed.

    "What was that?!"

    "I... uh... weird."

"Do you need some water? I can go get you some water."

    Helena waved her hand dismissively.

"It felt like someone hit me square in the back of the head with a piece of two-by-four though. I haven't felt like that since..."

Helena trailed off. Her usually healthy, light-brown complexion drained away and she shivered involuntarily.

    "Since what? Hel, what's happening?"

And just as quickly as it came, the incident drained away. Helena's shaking body became firm again and she found herself in the strong arms of a work colleague. A moment passed between them, then Helena remembered the envelope and removed herself from the embrace.

"Would you like to explain what just happened there?"

"Not really. I think I just remembered something. Something that happened six years ago."

"Okay. I remember things all the time but I don't..."

And then Mark remebered what happened six years ago. His eyebrows raised as high as they could go and his mouth formed an 'Oh'.

"Then let's get back to HQ and get you coffee. Uh, I can cover for you this afternoon if you need me to."

    Helena smiled.

"Thanks Mark. I'm okay. Just a little flash, is all. Besides," she tapped the envelope, "we've got some investigating to do."
