We have two world records.

I had a chance to flip through a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records 2012: Gamer's Edition at work yesterday and found two listings for City of Heroes/Villains. We were in the top ten list of MMOs based on subscribed users (and practically the only non-fantasy style game on the list) plus we hold the record for the most free content updates ever (and as of publication they had only counted up to I21). Thanks for years of record breaking material; I'm sure going to miss my trips to Paragon City, Praetoria, and the Isles.

I'd love to see that list! Got a reference?

That would actually make six then. I wrote about four others in my CoH article earlier in the week. The Guinness World Records site didn't have the two listed that you found in the book otherwise I would have happily included them as well. City of Heroes has done so much for the industry. It is just a shame others can't see that.

I dont have the exact numbers of the game as of 'cancel date', but there are few out there that had a consirable big playerbase when they shut down. They lost the title 'non-forced cancel of subscribed based', that title seems to be still in hands of Tabula (or maybe original APB, who was sub-based when they closed in 2010 - though got a f2p relaunch by G1).

Apart from that, in the f2p section there are quite a few big titles, like Dragon Sky and localised Rose Online (2 bankrupt, 1 global closure), no idea what their numbers were though but they were considered as games with a rather large playerbase (unlike other f2p games with 10k to 15k players).

I think Positron/Matt Miller knows the numbers and it was his statement that City of Heroes is the biggest MMO ever canceled.

Facts are what they want them to be

We actually got a plaque for the # of game updates. It used to be in the front lobby.

Who gets to keep that? Did it go into the same box as all the computers?

Also, anyone got picks?

I don't know. It wasn't there anymore the last time I was at the studio.

Wow that stuff could have been used as advertising points.

3: Runescape
4: Lineage
5: Lineage II
6: Dofus
7: Eve Online
8: Final Fantasy XI
9: LotR Online
10: CoH/V

Sure we're #10, but we still beat the other super hero games.

Hmmm looks like NCSoft is doing good. 4 games on the top ten, soon to be three with those three in the top 5.

Thanks for posting the link to this article. That was way nifty!

Heh! I shouldn't doubt it, and expect in time (if it isn't already) that the Save CoH player/fan/customer protest is included in Wikipedia, if not Guinness.

Dunno about Wikipedia. They tend to be Nazis when it comes to notability and references. A "Save CoH Movement" page wouldn't last long. You'd be doing well to get it referenced on the main CoH article.

oh yeah, wikipedia. Some of those folks at Titan tried to vandalize the NCSoft page and lost the battle. One had the audacity to put in a protection thing, it was denied. What it really needs to be protected from is from them. The regulars over there got the situation under control and one even called COTitan.com a smear campaign. And apparently they tried to add anti-ncsoft stuff to the City of heroes page too with the same result.

I think they ruined their reputation at wikipedia.

But dont worry, they seem to have other allies in the media andif they are having a big effect, they dont need wikipedia.

Sort of funny, Wikipedia wouldn't event accept my edits during the Going Rogue launch. There was some incorrect URL's, and I wanted to add the YouTube channel, but they kept rejecting them, even though I explained who I was.

Actually, explaining who you were killed it. There's a standard that you can't edit entries about yourself or you're connected with, to supposedly keep people from turning it into an advertising medium. While that usually makes a lot of sense, I've known others who, reading their entry, see an error but can't get it fixed.
