Windows 8

Hey all

I know this isn't exactly on topic for the game, except I will be playing the game under it, albeit briefly

So, anyone got it? Installed it? Tried it extensively?

Any thoughts? Is it good to use? Annoying to use? A pain in the but-tocks?

I'm interested as I've seen a lot of good comments, as well as some bad ones, so I want to get the opinion of people I trust.

The main reason I'm tempted? I'm on Vista, the upgrade price from Microsoft website for me is about £25, which is a bargain for the latest OS!

Anyone upgraded this way? Was it easy to do? How does it work for doing a clean install? I read I can burn it to disc, can I reinstall from that in the future? Also, is it a 64 bit version that installs considering my Vista is the 32 bit.

Any help, gratefully received! Failing thatm, links to good sites that might have this info?

Laters all!

The underlying OS isn't bad or anything. But I absolutely CANNOT stand the new start screen/metro interface.

If you're running a touch interface, yeah, it's probably not so bad.

But if you're doing gaming/desktop productivity, it's clown shoes.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

What, you don't want to "fling" your mouse to open the task-bar?

Every other MS OS I avoid like the plague.

DOS, good.
95, crap.
98SE, good.
Millennium, crap.
XP, good.
Vista, crap.
7, good.

I think we can gather the worth of 8.

Be well, people of CoH.

I don't know, I don't hold out much hope for the Windows after 8 either.

Vista is "okay", but yeah I prefer XP.

If large corporations accept Windows 8, then it will be a hit for Microsoft. The notion of a standard UI across all platforms, from XBox 360 to phones to tablets to laptop/desktop is sort of Star Trek Next Gen like. If the general public learns to adopt it, then it'll be a big hit. But since it comes now as default on every new PC/Laptop (yes you can downgrade to 7 for free), the general public may be forced to accept it as the new way of doing things.

I have read many reviews and comparisons on trusted and authoritative sites. What I have gathered is that you will see significant performance gains upgrading from Vista to Windows 8. I won't be upgrading from Windows 7 due to the minimal performance gain and loss of interface I am happy with. There is also a slight and almost unnoticeable performance loss with windows 8 on a few aspects I prefer not to lose. So from Vista to Win8 yes. From Win7 to Win 8, for me an emphatic no.

You'll have to decide if the pros of Windows 8 outweigh the cons for you. Opinions will differ.

Personally, I think the person who made the call to remove the start button should be fired. Users will hack their own start button and remove that abomination of an interface as much as possible since Windows 8 performace is actually good enough to install it.

Now in the business world....I would expect most will ignore Windows 8 like Vista.

I like it. I always hated the start bar and my desktop is constantly cluttered with shortcuts, this way you have a dedicated page for program selection and can leave the classic desktop for organising files and stuff. I also like the new task manager and msconfig.

Thankfully, my current system is running Win7, I have no plans to upgrade to 8, the whole "touchscreen" based interface turns me off.

We are talking about a new MS OS right? I won't even -start- to think about upgrading to it until WIN8 SP1 is released. *shrugs*

I just barely upgraded to Windows 7 and I love it!

From what I've seen and read about Windows 8, I intend to give it a pass.

I understand that if you move your mouse to the extreme bottom left corner the start button reappears

personally I don't care for the interface on the latest versions of Microsoft's products

Windows 8 boxes
Visual studio 2012 grey edition
Office 2010 ribbon

They seem to be going out of their way to find the least intuitive downgrades possible.

I've been supporting it in a work environment for a few days now - came on a laptop bought for a new manager - and it's ok. It took a minute to get used to, but I felt comfortable training the new employee how to use it immediately - and she picked it up easily too

"Press the windows key and then go to any program you want."
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"Oh."

Only trouble I've had so far is I made the terrible mistake of leaving automatic updates running on a MS product that hasn't been out for two years: The first autoupdate bricked the HP laptop. Booted to safe mode, removed the failing update, and fixed that little oversight.

Not running it at home, though, so can't say how well it's playing with programs that aren't the traditional business applications used in an office.

As for upgrading to Win 8, I'm waiting until A) I have some spare cash, not that Win 8 requires much, and B) after Nov 30, just to ensure that if something DOES get borked by the upgrade, I'll be able to keep playing CoH.

A should come shortly after B anyway. I'm on target to start a new job on Dec 3. Got the highest score of any current candidate on the entry exam and just have a final interview to get through this coming Tuesday. *fist pump*
