Ok... NOW I'm sad.

Threadjack - are there any threads lurking, possibly on the beta forums, that explain the mechanics of Absorb? I got curious about them last night due to experience in a Hamidon raid, in which I had a very large absorb buff that seem to provide me no benefit against Hamidon yellow mito damage - I lost half my HP bar and my absorb bar did not move.

That made me realize I know pretty much zip about this mechanic, as I did not get involved in the betas where it has featured, and I decided I'd like to know how it works while I still have the chance.

When I dug into it, I found that most of that bulk is static initializers from STL containers, and the umpteen different versions of them that got instantiated from all the possible classes that could be stored in them. Boost is templates.

Memory is plentiful until you use it all up. Also, don't forget that while CPUs are very fast, memory bus bandwidth has not scaled upward as quickly and is lagging behind. So you have a ton of memory, and a ton of CPU resources, but a relatively small bottleneck to load data from that memory. In practice, performance is limited by the CPU's L1 cache, and to a lesser extent, the L2 cache.

That's why these days my default optimization level is -Os. In my admittedly somewhat limited testing, being able to fit more code (and as a result, data) into the cache significantly outstrips the benefit of things like loop unrolling in the average case.
That would be something new, but I take that as something to test. But if we take the scope of a whole server application, no data or code is going to take seat for long in the cache anyway.

Using "resources are plentiful" as an excuse to be inefficient is the reason that the Windows 2008 server admin tools are so painfully slow. I peeked at one with a debugger once and cringed at the sheer bulk of the many dozens of .NET assemblies it was loading, just to view the event log...
That's not the same. dotNET assemblies are like java versions, each are different, and what they did was like linking to every version of the library each time they boot up the program, even if they needed only to print things. It's like including stdio.h and use printf just to output constant strings. Anybody can do that in any language, and it's not the same as saying "well, do I use 2k of data instead of 256bytes and have easier to read enumerations (like 1,2,3, 11,12,13, 21,22,23...) instead of no-gap but hard to read enumeration values (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,...) ?" As Arcanaville said, code efficiency is the enemy of the programmer efficiency. You can perfectly live with it but generally it does work against you.

Oh no. Leaks. Gasp.

Good thing the other ones didn't leak, or you'd be even sadder, and I don't think I could handle that.

FPAGN.

Tempted to say yes just to jerk your chain, but no, that was never in the works. It was too resource intensive to pull off.

There were powers and AT stuff in the pipeline that were so cool, they would almost have made me recover from the emoness of the fire imps nerf, however.

Either that or Citadel is.

Hm, or maybe he's Twiki. I would probably run screaming if he broke out "bidi-bidi-bidi", though.

So other than all these bellow this message... what else? I am now finding it hard to believe you had time to even think further beyond that? I think a combo of the ranged attacks in Beast Mastery plus some melee attacks from Savage Melee would had make my dream dominator power come true:

Bestial Assault!

I'm sure that's why you remember that episode:

Actually ... I completely did not remember the episode ... until you pasted that. So I suspect you're on to something there. Seriously, I now vaguely remember the plot and everything, and I did not at all before.

I did have a serious boy crush on Erin Gray, though, so, yeah.

It was basically Gil Gerard and Erin Grey: eyecandy in the 25th century, but that doesn't mean they didn't try to throw in a whole bunch of memorable 80s crazy:

I don't even know how you can unsee that last one. I think the writers of CO should have written Buck Rogers in the 25th Century Online instead: the sensibilities are almost perfectly spot on.

Since we are on that, I wanted to ask some gurus of the 80s, but possibly either early 90s or even back to the 60s. The robot picture reminded me.

I remember a film where a robot, sent against the protagonists, was destroyed and got reconstructed, he ressembled Robby the Robot, the bubble arms and round glass head, but wasn't quite like it. There was a dark and red corridor at the beginning also. Then, an asteroid came down on the base, then all I remember was seeing something that ressembled Moonbase alpha from Space 1999, from which the heroes (a family or something like that) took off in a saucer+Enterprise tail ship, then they found another planet they explored in the saucer only part of their ship.

That's all I can remember of the film, I thought I labeled the VHS "Space 2000" but I can't quite really remember, but for reasons unknown, I took the VHS apart to see how it was functionning. I was 8 or so at the time, so it's quite old and doesn't make any sense.

Could you help me put a title on that ? Thank you !

Completely guessing since I haven't seen it, but based on the description of a family... Lost in Space?

It was the first thing that ran through my head at any rate.

Does not ring me a bell but it for some reason got me thinking about The Black Hole

Have not seen that movie in ages... just remember it used to scare the hell out of me as a kid... would wake up in fear that the entire planet would be swallowed by a black hole...

Its a silly movie really, but it has the coolest laser gun sound effects of all time in my opinion. A silly thing to remember, but yeah.

I loved it for the lasers. >.>

The robots didn't have glass heads, though, and there wasn't any planetary exploration, so I ruled it out before I thought about Lost in Space.

I think I was 6 last time I saw it. Revealilng my age, that was 29 years ago. Dont remember the movie but still remember the black hole phobia. :/

Well I do also remember Maximilian and the floaty robots, but what kid would not remember that? I forgot about the glass faced robots until I searched that up now.

Sounds a little like "The Shape of Things to Come" the bad one with Jack Palance not "Things to Come" by Cameron Menzies, that's arguably one of the greatest movies of all time.

Barry Morse and the moon scenes might have made you think of space 1999
