Sentinel+ character extractor: Here it is!

Assuming this works for some future derivative of COH....

So many, many ways to cheat. Twink out a toon, load it with all purples, max inf, export. Rinse/repeat.

Any designer foolish enough to let people import their toons are going to destroy their game economy on day one.

Actually, Cyber, I do believe that if the file is tampered with that it will basically become trash and won't re-import at all. At least that is what I have heard concerning it.

My Characters

What he's talking about wouldn't require tampering with the file at all. He's talking about moving valuables around between toons in game right before exporting with Sentinal+.

Personally, I don't think that the economy is going to be a huge concern on any given private server. Everyone can just roll their own SS/Fire if they don't have one already. And the people that run the server would probably be cool with high-yield fire farms in AE.

Personally, I'm not as concerned about items. I have stuff in my base that I doubt I'll bother putting on characters, and ATIO in my e-mail that I doubt I'll do anything with. The hope there would be that on the odd chance that the game is sold, that the data will be sold with it and it might be accessible again.

If not, I really just want to use the tool so I can have some info of my characters. Why, I don't really know, but it seems comforting that some record of their existence will be there. If it's something that can be imported into a character viewer, great. If it can be imported into an emulator, even better. But even if it's just something I can open up in notepad a few years from now when I stumble upon it, that's fine too.

If the characters "live" again, I will be happy enough that I won't care about what items I may have lost.

Suggestions:
Super Packs Done Right
Influence Sink: IO Level Mod/Recrafting
Random Merit Rolls: Scale cost by Toon Level

This and a few other reasons are why I'm not bothering to save my characters.

Be well, people of CoH.

The only reason I'm saving them is for the mementos.

On the off chance the game is somehow saved and the characters aren't, at least I'll be able to look at them and go "oh, right. I need to make that "guy" again.

You're overlooking a couple of very important points.

First, you're right in that any designer that would let people import their characters inventory and all would probably put a serious dent in the game's economy. But this still wouldn't stop a designer from allowing people import just the character without the inventory. It would save you having to recreate the costume, power selection, slotting, etc. Plus, there's no reason a designer wouldn't allow you to start that character at level 50 (or whatever level he/she is) instead of starting over from level 1.

Second, although the possibility of reimportation is one reason that people might use Sentinel+, it's not the only reason. Some people like having a human-readable (well, XML) file that describes their character's attributes, stuff like what badges he/she has, what inventory he/she possessed, etc. People are now in the process of taking hundreds of screenshots and gigabytes of video of their characters. This is one more thing they can keep as a memento.

If you don't want to use it, fine. But please, don't go knocking people who do.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

I'm also archiving both the live and beta versions of the game. Who knows if someone eventually cobble together a character viewer that could use the character info stored by Sentinel+ as well as the game's texture maps and costume meshes from the pigg files.

As are you. Namely the Laws of Loopholes and Jacka$$ Genies.

And I'm not knocking anyone that uses the tool. I've already made GREAT use of it! Thank you for helping to ensure cheating remains a part of any future for this game.
