  1. Very apropos for me personally, being that my other MMO is LotRO.
  2. You can unlock those on Beta. I thought my 2 Time characters(a 50 and a 39) were lost forever. Then I discovered Beta server.
  3. Ultima Online
    Dark Age of Camelot
    Everquest
    Asheron's Call
    Anarchy Online
    Everquest II

All of these games are older than CoX(EQII is the same age).
All of these games appear to have less players than CoX.
All of these games are owned by companies that are not NCsoft...
  4. By all accounts, yes. The "no sound" bug that showed up at some point is a big disappointment though.
  5. I knew I Burnt The Toast was probably going to flame me, but I'm genuinely surprised at the vehemence from the rest of you. I suppose your anecdotal evidence of "that one time" that you couldn't find a team on Virtue trumps my knowledge of my home server. And I definitely wasn't exaggerating anything.

Golden Girl is right: Virtue's the only server that still hits 2 dots(and it does so daily). It's a sure bet that you'll find other people to play with there during this last week. Refuse to believe it all you want.

But Merits enticed The Gamers. Gamers are those players who figure out the rules and then push them to the cliffs. No role-playing, no stepping back to savor and make jokes. This task force generates that many merits, we do X, we do Y, and we get it down to 45 minutes.
My first experence with The Lady Grey TF was on a team like this. The whole TF took 22 minutes. I never had a clue what we were even doing, and I generally didn't even make it to the door before the rest of the team was on the final boss for each mission. So traumatic that I black listed the entire team as people I never ever wanted to play with or even see in the game again. There are many kinds of people in this game, and I applaude the Devs for trying to get us to mingle, but some groups clearly do not mix.
I really dislike the speed run mentality of far too many of this game's players. Why are you playing this game when you seem to hate actually playing it? Noone really wants to take forever and a day to complete content, but abandoning half the team to death just because they don't have stealth seems really wrong for an MMO.
  7. For those of you that still don't seem to realize this even now- VIRTUE IS STILL ACTIVE! If you want to actually play with other people, than you need to come here. We run constant TFs, and there's always multiple teams advertising for tips, papers, etc.

There's a reason why Virtue's population eventually exceeded Freedom's. PUGs on Freedumb are a nightmare of immature players that play poorly. By comparison, Virtue is PUG heaven. We tend to be friendly, mature and intelligent. You will have fun here. Transfer today.
  8. What he's talking about wouldn't require tampering with the file at all. He's talking about moving valuables around between toons in game right before exporting with Sentinal+.

Personally, I don't think that the economy is going to be a huge concern on any given private server. Everyone can just roll their own SS/Fire if they don't have one already. And the people that run the server would probably be cool with high-yield fire farms in AE.

WE MUST SAVE THE GAME!!!!! we can save the game..
I'm not at all trying to be snarky with you, but it appears that you missed the entire media campaign we've waged up to this point.

We tried everything. We filled up 33 Atlas Parks on Virtue, with a bunch of overflow onto Freedom and Infinity. Over 20,000 people signed the "Save CoX" petition on Change.org. We flooded the personal email accounts of NCsoft execs with emotional emails and flooded their physical mail with actual capes and masks. We contacted internet celebrities and famous game developers to either buy us out or to help bring awareness to our cause. We tried to get the money together ourselves to buy the freaking game from them.

NCsoft didn't budge, and they won't. We don't fit some executive's vision of an anime grindfest.
  10. In case you didn't know, Beta server is completely unlocked! Everything on the store can be bought for 0 Inf, so you can buy whatever you need. Buy yourself a ton of character slots and powersets and then come here to the forums and use the Character Copy Tool to transfer over as many characters as you want.

Doing this has allowed me to run my Time Manipulation characters again!
  11. That was Arbiter Hawk. He spawned 16 Statesmen in Paragon Dance Party for the 50+ people there to fight. Then we danced our pixelated @sses off.
  12. LotRO is my second favorite MMO, and as of Dec 1st, my main one. It's a great game with tons of polish. I know a lot of people here don't like fantasy settings* or the themepark style MMO, but for what it is, it's one of the best examples of the genre.

A good way to describe it is "WoW for grownups". I've played several MMOs, and CoX and LotRO both have the best communities that I've seen- mature and friendly with a minimum of the rude idiocy that WoW is famous for.

Like CoX, it's a game where oftentimes the journey itself is more fulfilling than the destination. Its writing is hands down the best I've seen in any MMO. Players actually want to read the quest descriptions.

LotRO's expansions always have challenging endgame raid content(comparable to WoW, etc.), but the game also offers much more. Apart from CoX and CO, it's a roleplayer's dream due to the rich lore and attention Turbine gave to a variety of non-combat stuff you can do. You can hang out at the Prancing Pony and listen to other players play actual music in the game's unique music system(it's not uncommon to witness someone pull out a lute and start jamming out to some Led Zeppelin). You'll sometimes find groups of Elven and Hobbit PCs dancing in the Shire. The game features a really good crafting system that lets you grow your own pipweed, brew your own beer(which you can get really drunk on!), and make dyes for clothing(LotRO has a good cosmetic outfit system that does give you some control over your appearance).

It has a far better F2P system than we had, so it's definitely worth checking out.

    * Please don't be ignorant enough to call Tolkien's work "generic fantasy". Virtually everything in the genre except Robert E. Howard, Fritz Lieber and C.S. Lewis(his predecessors and contemporary) is a direct ripoff of his work. It'd be like saying that Batman is a "generic superhero".
  13. Got mine as well. Thanks for your generosity!
  14. I would greatly appreciate a level 50 Numina's Convalescence +Reg/Rec proc recipe. My global is @Blackmoor.

    Thanks in advance!

    Bat Aura?

I think it was available last year on the store with the other Halloween stuff, but I may be remembering wrong.

I do know that you can unlock it by running Dr. Kane's House of Horrors, because I just did. You can queue for it via LFG's "Holiday" tab.
  16. And I'm of a completely different mind on the subject.

They're stealing my beloved game from me, and so I am going to make the most of the time that I have remaining. I've been logging in every single night, playing my butt off. I start or join TFs(and SFs!) almost nightly on Virtue.

I'm spending as much time as possible with my characters. They sprang to life from my imagination, and many of them have a special place in my heart. My toons from fantasy games translate almost perfectly from one fantasy game to the next, but the superhero genre works a bit differently. I tried to remake my main(a Mind/Fire Dom) in CO a few years back as their "Inferno" AT, but it didn't work out at all. And I've had this happen with a few other characters as well(And CO toons usually don't translate to CoX either). Almost all of my characters here will die a final death on November 30th. I will miss them dearly.

Every time I log in, I make a note of taking in the sights and sounds of our beloved cities. Sometimes I'll just hover for a minute, enjoying the sunset in Talos Island or the music in St Martial. I find myself noticing the finer details, like the trains riding on their tracks or the fact that some dev spent his day at work putting paintings on the hospital wall all those years ago. In a little over thirty days, all of that hard work and wonderful ambiance will be forever destroyed by the collective whim of dispassionate shareholders. I'll be dammed if I'm not going to give this painting one last look before it gets unceremoniously thrown on the fire.

There's no reason now to hold back on any of my assets, and that has enabled me to complete the IO builds of three of my characters so far, with another I'll have completely setted out within the next few days. That will leave me with two others characters that I plan to get as close as possible with the money and merits I have remaining. Of course, donations are always welcome.

I cried when I logged in my Defender on Aug 31. I've cried a few times since, and know that I will cry a few times more before the end. But I'm going to keep playing, and you should too. If you have any transfers left, come on over to Virtue where we're still keeping the lights on until the power shuts off. We'll run an Eden Trial...Or a Mortimer Kal.

Anyone up for a Lady Grey?

    Oh, stop it.

Those of us that have actually played on private servers have had some good experiences with them. The hypothetical guy that would go through the effort of getting one up and running isn't going to be content with a sloppy piece of crap. And this fear of ubiquitous hacks is even more farcical.
  18. It's official: We now have proof that NCsoft did not give a f*** about us. And they refuse to sell us to someone that might.

And without market economics in place, IO'ing out your character is going to be tough unless (wait for it) someone jerk-hacks the marketplace code to address this.
You're pretty sure based on what empirical evidence exactly? The same pessimistic doom & gloom you've been spewing for this entire thread?

Personal information? Like the email address you used to sign up? It's a private server. You don't have to give anyone your billing info and credit card number.

When people talk about "hacked servers" they're talking about players using hacks that give them an unfair advantage, like being able to run at lightning speeds(which I did witness once).

They're not talking about a honeypot scenario where the private server exists to install malware, etc. I assume that that has happened at some point, but probably only a handful of times and aimed specifically at really large markets like that of a certain 800 Pound Gorilla. Why would the Russian Mafia bother with the monumental job of setting up a private server that will only have 200 people play on it for a game that they had literally never even heard of before when there are MUCH bigger targets for them to exploit?

Again, a CoX private server would only be run by someone that loves this game and doesn't want to see it end. Period.

  22. This whole "hacked server" thing is really a canard and a non-issue. The vast majority of people that run private servers just want to provide a fun, quality gaming experience, and they ban hackers on the rare occasion when they find them(because they rarely exist). The vast majority of players just want the same quality experience.

Far too much of what I'm reading in this thread are people with wrongful notions of what to expect from private servers; That they're highly illegal hackfests. A CoX private server is likely to be just like playing on Beta with a tight-knit community.
  23. No idea.

It should also be pointed out that the number of people that have gotten in trouble for running private servers is miniscule compared to the number that actually exist. The vast majority don't charge anything, hence why they don't get into any trouble for it. Very few people ever do see any real world negative ramifications from doing it, and its almost always because they profited off it somehow.

Granted, NCsoft may work a little differently, especially considering the C&D letter that the Tabula Rasa private server received. This community is probably going to find out first hand.
