This doesn't make any sense...
City of Heroes is still, after over 8 years, one of the top 5 rated games on MMORPG.com It's got a loyal fan base, an active community and plenty of life left for content. Guess I'm just a little boggled by all this, especially since it seemed things were going so well.

If true, that would make good business sense.
Its either cryptic engine licence or NCSOFT likes all players to goto GW2. I will not take any chances and stay away from both GW2 and CO.
If I ever feel in need of another game... As of yet none can compair.
- The Italian Job: The Godfather Returns #1151
Beginner - Encounter a renewed age for the Mook and the Family when Emile Marcone escapes from the Zig!
- Along Came a... Bug!? #528482
Average - A new race of aliens arrives on Earth. And Vanguard has you investigate them!
- The Court of the Blood Countess: The Rise of the Blood Countess #3805
Advanced - Go back in time and witness the birth of a vampire. Follow her to key moments in her life in order to stop her! A story of intrigue, drama and horror! Blood & Violence... not recommend to solo!
I've played CO and DCUO, both are a drag. Though they may have superior graphics, their costume creators are boring and their content is terrible. I really thought DCUO would be the City of Heroes killer, but after playing it a week to level 30 I realized it involved the same exact endgame content, played day after day to get armor that I didn't really want. Guess the WoW recipe didn't work so well.
Along with having one of the best crafting systems in MMO history (I mean cmon, I spent entire days at work trying to figure out cool new things to do with IOs) it was also very lucrative with the online shop. I just can't see this being a money issue, must be licensing.

The latest rumor is that the engine was only on a 5 year lease from Cryptic, and that Cryptic's new owners, Perfect World, didn't want to renew the license as CoH was a rival product to CO.
|
That does however paint things in another light.
It may be just me trying to find a silver lining...or all the pills I just took to feel numb, but this could actually be the push needed for CoH 2 to happen.
On an engine they own, or at least one that's not owned by their competitors and without worrying that the first game still being around would split the player base.
I mean, if the truth this was all corporate politics and if CoH was still going strong despite its age, was still well-loved, still had a dedicated community and Freedom was a success, they'd be stupid NOT to consider a follow up because no matter what, there's a vacuum for a good super hero MMO now and the IP still has strength.
.
UNless its a Coh2 with a reward program for former players, no Cryptic/pw or NCsoft game will ever see a dime of my money again.
Boycott Ncsoft if they close down Coh.
Or rather, PW wanted to renew it...for an exorbitant fee and with a brutal new contract.

Everyone relevant would know about that date, and there wouldn't be nearly this surprise.
Plus, if you make money from licensing an engine, and you use that license to deliberately screw another company, you can kiss off any licensing money from anyone ever again.

I wasn't intending to have a go at either of those anyway. I'm sick of the Generic Epic Fantasy games of which GW2 is the latest in a long line and CO, which is a pretty old game itself by now, never did appeal to me. CoH I've played off and on since late beta and there has never been another MMO that I felt so thoroughly at home with (and I've played more than a few.)
|
Guess I still have Arkham City that I stopped playing shortly after I resubbed to CoH a couple months ago....

That rumor makes even less sense to me than "well we were talking things over here at corporate and said ya know, I don't think that superhero game is the sort of thing we're gonna do - so let's shut it down and fire everyone without warning."

"I have something to say! It's better to burn out then to fade away!"
Yeah, considering they had another project in the works, just shutting down Paragon like that didn't make any sense. A cessation of CoH, yes. But killing off the entire company doesn't.
|
So the decision to cut the "least developed" one would actually make sense... which unfortunately would leave Paragon Studio's doing nothing...
I'm sick of the Generic Epic Fantasy games of which GW2 is the latest in a long line

Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.
|
I have nothing against GW2 itself, but I'll be damned before I invest money in one of those again. I don't care if it has random world events.
|
Regarding the "random" world events: there as lot fewer than they let on. And let me put it this way; people here got sick of Rikti invasions happening 24/7 on those weekends. Imagine if those invasions could happen anywhere, even inside Wentworths, and they don't care you went AFK in a 'safe' area to bio. And it was all day every day forever.
