Do not buy guild wars 2!
I actually almost bought GW2 before I learned of this but the online order system was *****-ed.
Oh well, maybe secret world.
I will point out that ArenaNet is a separate game developing studio, even though they are owned by NCSoft. I will also point out that many of the ArenaNet developers and staff are long-time City of Heroes players, and that they are just as furious about this as we are...because they ARE part of the community here.
It's a personal choice in the end. Are you mad enough at NCSoft to punish a smaller studio that might suffer precisely the same fate as Paragon Studios? That's up to you. But ArenaNet had absolutely no say in this decision whatsoever. It's like blaming Pixar because a Marvel Studios movie sucked. (Yes, both studios are wholly owned and operated by a larger distributor - Disney.)

While the timing looks bad, I'm not convinced that there is any nefarious intent in it. A lot of management teams have ongoing analysis of the operations they run, and some of those operations are battlegrounds. Sometimes unrelated decisions collide. Maybe there are NCSoft factions that love CoX and others that hate it. This game may have been on its death-bed a lot longer than we know, living on borrowed time. Freedom could have been an experiment that just didn't impress the execs enough to keep around and maybe they had a year or 9 months or whatever to make a case for it - and couldn't. Maybe subs and other purchases have just finally dropped too low and are trending lower.
I won't say they didn't do what you're suggesting, but I will say that I doubt it. So far as I know we just don't have enough detail, and are likely to never have it. All we'll ever know is what we're told and what we suppose. But those things don't always intersect at the truth.
I will miss this game a LOT. I loved it. I still do. I still can't believe how sad I am. To paraphrase Louis L'Amour (I think): "There'll never be its like again. Not in our time or any other."
Sith Rose makes a great point, too.

It's unfortunate that's the way it is but that is the way it is. Thing is thought when I say "NCsoft will not get another cent from me" It's not just because they closed City of Heroes (Although that is an obvious reason), it's also because those other titles don't interest me at all.
Why should I buy/support a game that I have no interest in? Because those developers need to be working? If that was America's philosophy then everyone would be working. Truth is a Boycott hurts a lot more than some developers on another title. It hurts everyone there from secretaries to janitors. The people at the top are always the last one affected.
So is that a reason to stop? Maybe. Putting all that aside for a minute, let's say the worst happens. CoH dies, no second chances. NCsoft doesn't care about the community and the boycott happens. Now "Mr. decision maker" is looking at say Aion and thinking it's their turn to die. More lay offs. More unemployment. Maybe their player bases join in the boycott. Now that group has gotten larger and maybe it might be better to find some 50/50 arrangement to appease as many as they can. Maybe even keep a server open for it. Who knows....
No one.
No one has the answers. No one "Knows". I sure as hell don't and I won't pretend I do. What I do know is that it's my right to decide to boycott or not. It's a choice and it's one that I didn't take lightly in a fit of emotion. I simply feel that NCsoft has made bad decisions overall. I feel they need to at least make an attempt to reach out to the players who have been loyal to their company and offer to make amends somehow. (and since I'm subbed til March, thinking refund for 5 months) If they don't, then yes. I will be telling my story to anyone purchasing an NCsoft game and if that is "boycotting" then so be it.

Not planning on buying guild wars 2...looks too lame..
Sorry...but it does....seriously....look at the powers....woopee you get a nifty five second stealth ability that every thing can see through anywise....that gives you an extra...5% damage...and the recharge is like 5 minutes....and you have to be high level to get it.
Travel power wise....you will be running for hours on end getteing no where and wasting time until you end up spending tons of money for nothing.
Also tried to play it on a friend machine....i died way too fast...the level system is totaly messed up....fighting things 10 levels below you and you still have a tough time...is not even remotely fun.
The entire game is a true griond fest...just like dead souls and wow...where you are forced to farm and grind to survive against things...until you complete that quest and find you run into another hard hting that forces you to grind again...until you reach maximum level.
And every mission has not story or writing...it might have a cut scene....but inthe end it becomes a typical...go to some place...kill things there until you get 55 matches....or get 60 claws....so you kill hundreds and spend hours doing this...for a reward that so tediuosly lame its not funny.
Star Wars that one from Bio-ware is exactly the same way.
Also went back to try champions been about a year....what do i find...i find i cant even defeat armadillo anymore....yep he has become stronger then most of my characters that used to be able to beat him down....for a level 15 mission....my level 26 certain has difficulties now....they lowered healing able to be given upped the energy costs and lowered the damage and resiatcne and defenses on players.
Yah neat game...where when you dodge something that does 75 damage it simply says dodge and you take 69 damage instead....what the heck is the point.
Also most powers are broken there....invulnerability supposed to lower damage effects right off by 29 points....on and beyond its resistance...well thats not happening.
I still do occasional star trek and jade dyanasty..those games have way too much i have not done and so much to do its not even funny.
Champions seams like it has alot to do....but i get my self killed from supposedly simple stuff now....so its not much fun anymore....Invulnerable feels like weak sauce....i survive longer in city of heros with any archtype.
Also went and tried NCs other new game....um think its called blood and sword...fantasy game....tried it on a friends machine....it was very grindy and the level system is again borked....as the level 5s where beating my level 30 i was playing fairly well....
Its about on par with AION....though i noticed i cant jump in place and kill my self like in AION....or jump down some stairs and take almost my entire life bar in damage as with AION.
Guess city of heroes spoiled me....if i cant have good stealth and a good level system...and some good travel powers or items...I consider the games subpar.
My suggestion to everyone is....dont buy much of anything right off....check it out...try it out....dont listen to what others tell you...find out for yourself
And ask yourself...are you having fun? or are you simply being forced to do something?
The game should be fun 99% of time...It should never be a chore or work to play it.
And they should never put you to sleep....if you are falling asleep playing you need to ask yourself truly why you are falling asleep...if the game is that boring...it wont ever improve....except in making you fall more alseep later.
Go buy Guild Wars 2.
It is the right thing to do.
i was going to get Guild Wars 2 since some friends were already playing it (and i wanted to create a cute little critter who commands horrifying monsters), but now...
