Attempting: The Really Hard Way Badge

Hello Triumph,

I have been convinced, after several weeks, to make another attempt at the Really Hard Way badge for the Magisterium Trial. I am looking for Volunteers for this, and any shared information someone cares to give now. The requirements for the badge are as follows:

Defeat Tyrant in the last phase/fight of Magisterium without defeating any of the Lights of the Well.

The lights of the Well can only be defeated by using the temp power: Quills of Jocas. They are one shot by this power, so we must be clear to not use this power in your attack chain.

In order to win this trial, I am seeking several small things from my players. As I am very lenient, do not expect me to enforce all of them, but I do expect you to make an attempt to be ready. (Edit: Remember, if for some reason, you cannot manage the recommend Incarnate Slots, having something is still better than having nothing.)

  1. Be a +3 lvl incarnate
  2. Have a t4 Core branch Lore pet
  3. Have either Assault or Support Hybrid
  4. Have Ultimate Inspirations ready to use. The more the better.
  5. Be prepared to listen and follow procedures outlined before the trial.
  6. Edit: Expect the Tyrant fight to take the whole 20 minutes. Do not get nervous and jump the gun.
Any suggestions here are welcome. The plan of attack will be decided prior to the actual run though. Please share input, guides, suggestions, etc here prior to the trial itself.

If you wish to Volunteer for this trial, now is the time. I plan to attempt this run at 4pm Pacific/7pm Eastern time on Sunday, September 2nd. Remember, space is limited, so it is on a first come, first served basis.

You know I'll be there, of course. I just hope for better corrupter archetype turnout.

Edit:
Here are some tips from the Champion Server.

The first run won't use Ultimates, so we can practice dodging lightning and see where we start hitting the regen wall, then we'll go for the badge on the second try. Time and interest permitting, I could do a third run to try to get either Triple Threat or Ready to Rumble.

If you'd like me to save you a spot, post below or let me know in-game.

Requirements
  • +3 level shift.
  • Hybrid unlocked and slotted.
  • Completed the Magisterium trial.
  • At least 6 Ultimates. There may be some available at the event, but please try to bring your own. You can get them from:
    • Astral Christy in Ouroboros for 2 Astral Merits each.
    • Wentworth's. I haven't checked prices lately but last time I did they were running between 7 and 10 million.

Other considerations
  • If your badge character needs it, by all means, bring them.
  • General Incarnate suggestions:
    • Judgement: Try to avoid Vorpal (he resists smashing).
    • Interface: One with a damage proc. Reactive and Degenerative have nice other effects, but don't overdo them as they can only stack a few times.
    • Lore: High single-target DPS (List at ParagonWiki for comparison) and/or exotic damage. Note that Cimerorans are getting brought into line (i.e., nerfed) in i24, so be careful if you choose to make them.
    • Destiny: Barrier or Rebirth.
    • Hybrid: Assault (Radial) or Support.
    • If you can't change to one of these, anything's better than nothing. Also, don't change from an ability with a level shift to one without.
  • Overall, the main concern is being able to do steady damage to Tyrant. Stacking Barrier and Rebirth destinies should be enough to keep the league alive.
  • The best things to bring are damage, AoE damage and tohit buffs, and defense and resistance debuffs for Tyrant.
  • Corruptors are good, between the buff/debuffs and Scourge.
  • Leadership powers, particularly Assault and Tactics, are useful.
  • For filling the non-Ultimate slots in your tray: reds (although we'll hopefully be pushing the damage cap without them), greens, or team yellows (or red/yellows).
Another piece of advice I found to be extremely useful:

I'm in. I've got tier 4's on my main (elec/SR scrapper) except for Hybrid, which is tier three. I don't think I've managed to get any of the Magi badges yet (Curse you Pendragon for running!), so I'm pumped to try. I'll make sure Ive got several Ultimate Insprirations....

I'm up for it. I don't know if Batraal can make the time or not but I'll let him know about this thread.

Naturally I'm in, however Big Brother airs Sunday nights and I've been addicted to that show with my family for over 10 years sooooo I might not make it lol. If there are several attempts in one night and if I remember to hop on, I'll be there.

I've consulted with Batraal The Bound (@Barbed Fist), my faithful bit of arm candy, and he believes he can make it and asked me to register on his behalf.

I can try to get my Pathfinder group to wrap it up by 7pm, but I cant promise that (I'm not DMing this time...). Bright side: it's at my house, so I can just jump on the computer right away. I still have a bunch of Ults etc from the last time, plus like 1-2 of every incarnate component, just in case I need to make something specific. If anyone wants to offer a suggestion as to how one would slot Radiation Infection and Lingering Radiation for Tyrant, I'm listening. I don't think any of the Hamios that would go into those powers are expensive (anymore...) and in any event I think I have have some that I'm not using.

One procedural question: might it be prudent to tell everyone who isn't a team leader to just delete the Quills of Jocas power from the get-go? Or if not the leaders, just appoint people whose job it is to use the Quills when instructed, such as low DPS Def/Con/Doms or something, and have everyone else just delete the power. Just a thought. In theory, only 6 reliable people actually need the quills, even when doing the trial the normal way.

Enzymes are always a good bet for Radiation Infection, but if it comes down to a choice you're going to want to favor the Defense Debuff component over the ToHit Debuff for this particular fight. Enervating Field is going to be a far more critical power, however, with its Resistance debuff. As for Lingering Radiation, I've been told by reliable sources that Tyrant completely shrugs off regeneration debuffs, so you won't get much out of LR.

Folks, I just wanted to stress this point. Far too often people start a panic at 10-15 minutes that "it isn't going to work". This includes being armchair quarterbacks distracting the leaders. If you are sending them a tell at a critical moment, they might NOT see the point they need to change strategy. Trust me, the trial leaders ARE paying attention. You don't need arguing with them at a critical moment. If you have advice, save it for after the trial finishes.

The way the trial leaders want to run the badge runs will work if people let it work.

The people doing these badge runs want the badge, the people leading these badge runs want to help YOU get the badges, and at this point as a trial leader myself I am so frustrated with the lack of cooperation that I don't want to run them very much.

So for everyone's sanity, please let us help you get the badges. If not, you might see even less Incarnate Trials than we've seen recently.

I will be there with Flamesprite. I've been on a few attempts that would have succeeded if not for some ******* grabbing the lights at the end. In light of the horrible news today, I want that damn badge before they kick us out.

I have just been informed CoH will be gone in a few months. This badge seems kind of pointless now. They all do....

The really hard way was never intended to be earned before the last incarnate slot. The one we'll never have now. Positron felt it wasn't able to be earned except by the best of the best.

I am going to run this. I am going to MAKE this happen. Some day, you'll look back at this damned game and say it's meaningless, but you will know that there were gaming gods here.

The RHW badge runs will happen.

I was considering upping my sub another month, but my time expires at midnight tonight for VIP. They may make all of us VIP eventually closer to the end-of-life date, but I don't see that happening in the next few days without work to close off new subs.

I wish you guys the best of luck.

I'm rather hoping that they just make everyone ftp VIPs. I've been a VIP for so long I'm not even sure which toons would have sets I couldn't access as a freebie. Try showing up and see if you CAN join it.
