So I was watching Jackass (MTV) and they had the same sound clip the COH Police Drones use? See it

Isn't that the exact same phrase, person saying it, etc that the police drones do? The "Code 5 106 north whatever"

I was trying to find the clip to compare it side by side by I think its the same thing.

Is that a common sound file or something?

Yeah, it's a stock sound file for police radio chatter or some such. It shows up in a lot of places.

As I understand it, this actually happens with a lot of different sound effects, because it's way easier and cheaper for a video game (or movie, or etc) to license a library of stock sounds from a sound studio than to create all their own sounds from scratch.

I've heard the same canned sound on several other tv shows

Ive heard that police radio chatter clip used many times.

The earliest I remember it was on this game called "spiderman cartoon maker" that was released for PC back sometime in the 90's lol. Theres clips of it on youtube.

Coh def didn't use it first

Yeah. That bit of police chatter, like a lot of stock sound effects, has been in use for a long time. This particular one is from Sim City 3000 and is just about everywhere. There are others that have been in use since the 1930s.

I can't believe someone else referenced that, I was going to make this exact same post when I saw this thread this morning. <3 The Spider-Man and X-Men Cartoon Makers.

I've heard sounds from various version of Quake and Doom, Dark Forces, movies, tv shows, etc. in here. The generic background ones as well as the specific character based ones. Just stock stuff.

Still waiting for the two screams of win to show up in a cutscene or something:
The Howie (or Youraagh): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4DX2DBWtTk / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_818rcC0DA (one nfwkids slight dialog bit, you're now warned.)
And
The Wilhelm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf8aB...eature=related

And in both... maybe some slightly NSFkids goriness... maybe.

/Perhaps I missed them...?

I managed to get the cartoon maker running again (mostly) on a virtual Win98 install and watched a bunch of the cartoons I made when I was 13-14 (15 years ago, geez). I gotta be honest...they have not aged well.

A lot of the games noises are from stock industry sound CDs.

The Police chatter has showed up in virtually every single show involving the police in some manner and in several games (the version we hear ingame is a shortened version of it, the original Grand Theft Auto had the full 2 minutes-ish version of it).

This is why you can often hear sounds from other games in movies, the Doom door sound crops up quite frequently for the same reason as do a lot the sounds from Quake.

No the game hasn't aged particularly well but its still pretty funny

I remember this feature where if u had a mic for your PC back then u could record audio to your cartoons...lots of lolz from that

My grandma actually had the game and I cant remember what type of PC she had then. She had a ton of games that came in this like starter package. I remember another game it came with was like toon adventure or some weird point and click adventure game.

Good times lol

I actually meant that the cartoons I made with my friend hadn't aged well. When you cross Dadaist humor with a 13 year-old the result is rarely pretty.

Wow that is funny! So who actually owns these sounds? Are they free to use?

Posted

Yeah they are, they're actually non-copyrighted sounds which is why you hear them everywhere since nobody has to pay a fee to use them.

You buy the CD collections but that's more for convience than anything and those Sound Effect CD collections (the professional ones) are freaking MASSIVE.

Let me put it this way, my college was fortunate enough to have an ex-professional sound designer as a teacher in media studies and he bought in a mere 10th of his collection, about 40 CDs, there were atleast two whole CDs dedicated purely to door relate sounds. They had an ungodly number of sounds of doors opening, closing, slamming etc. at various speed, various materials.
