Puzzled
Someone asking for a tank thinks they need more aggro control and redirected damage mitigation. They may actually be correct given team composition and player experience, or they may just be incorrect due to their own inexperience. That shouldn't be judged too harshly.

My City Was Gone
I figured it would only be right to update the status of this question of mine. When the toon in question hit 49..I didn't really see any point in choosing any of the other powers available to me, so I went ahead and chose Absorb Pain. I was in the midst of my pursuit of portal jockey and didn't have much time, so I didn't even stop in my base to grab an IO to stick in there. I was solo, so I didn't even use it...but eventually, I got my PJ and then brought my tank up on my other account and set my tank up amongst some +4 mobs.
Well, I have to admit - this caster debuff of AP is really minimal; a LOT more minimal than I remember it being. My character from issue 4 days was level 12 or 16 when I got it ...and back then, when I used it, I went from full to maybe 1/3..yet now, it barely seems to tickle. In fact, I had to use it about 5 times before i even noticed my health going less than half.
With this in mind, although I can see why anyone would skip it, I can also see the other side of the coin - as to why some folks would take it lieu of heal other or in addition to it.
So, I learned something. I didn't particularly enjoy the lesson, but I did at least get something out of it.

Meh. None of my characters are Emo enough to care about "sharing" your pain when they heal you.
So quit crying you gorram babies. It's only a sucking chest wound. I've cut myself worse shaving. Here's a band-aid to cover the hole. Now get back in there and fight.
What? You want to go to the hospital just because your leg was blown off by a landmine? What the hell were you doing on the ground Mr. Look at me I'm Flying? Serves ya right ya stupid Blaster. You act like losing a leg affects your powers. You ain't an MA scrapper flyboy. Now get back in the air and give your teammates some Death From Above support.
*shrug*
I think I took absorb pain on an emp... hmmm.... well, before ED.
Being unable to heal myself as - I think it was Clamor - took a few swipes at me, well - I haven't taken it since. And nobody's missed it.

However, the debuff that we're all talking about makes you completely unable to heal for twenty seconds, which is half a lifetime in this game. Since I play all of my characters in melee (my main, Agge, uses Total Focus as often as it comes up - and slotted with nucleus/peroxisome/peroxisome/rech IO/rech IO, it comes up pretty damn often), twenty seconds of not being able to heal is basically a deathwish in melee.

Re:
I can understand a melee toon wanting/expecting certain buffs.
What my buffing friend would say to this:
If they need my buffs to survive, there must be something wrong with their build, and they have no business playing melee.
I have no problems buffing mates, but the expectation that their survival and success relies on certain buffs indicates a very rigid playstyle and not adaptive to the situation. It is as if this player expects someone else to take care of their shortcomings.
However, I only partly agree with my friend since I think each AT has a role to play. I have encountered a kin who didnt take sb. The team did ok even without it. I think it's up to each player to play their at knowing its limits. Any extra buffing is icing on the cake.

Also, there are a number of enemies that can devastate a number of builds (dark ring mistresses, sappers, etc).

I currently have Absorb Pain on my emp/arch defender but when Sorcery goes live I'll be replacing Absorb Pain with Spirit Ward. I'd rather shield someone from damage than just heal them and take damage myself. It also gives me a tool to be more proactive in my damage mitigation.
I can't for the life of me think of a reason to skip Fortitude though. Sure many people have softcapped defenses but it gives + tohit (which will be popular with the upcoming snipe changes) and +damage as well. And who doesn't want "MOAR DAMAGE!"?
