I do believe it has always been there, at least from what I've gathered on the forums. I've never actually watched the show.

Yeah, threads on this pop up every couple months.

The comic shop in particular has a lot of stuff.

There's the cardboard Recluse display at the comic shop, and I'm pretty sure Sweatpants guy is usually wearing a CoH t-shirt.

It is a CoH T-shirt.

Funny story which some will remember, there was an internet Seller that made a copy of the shirt and tried to flog it off as a 'Mr Sweatpants' shirt not realising the logo was actually owned by NCsoft.

Some enterprising forum goer noticed this and posted a topic about it, NCsoft legal team pounce and pounced hard on the guy and the website he was selling through, forcing the website to withdraw his ability to sell the T-shirts completely.

There's also a manikin in the comics shop that wears a FREEM! shirt, there's some sort of CoV display on the wall of the comics shop, and occasionally you see a game box on a shelf in the guys' apartment, amongst other things.

Also, IIRC, this past season they even mentioned the game by name, with Leonard saying something like, "We're always the good guys - we play lawful good characters in D&D, heroes in City of Heroes, and in Grand Theft Auto we always pay the hookers."

So is this free placement because TBBT's production team happens to like CoX or is this a planned marketing thing?

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"

I'm guessing the production team likes it because marketing seems to be nonexistent, IMO.

CoH/V boxes (along with Guild Wars) were also fairly prominent in episodes of Chuck. There tended to be at least one shot per episode in the Buy More where they were visible.

Howard also has a few Lineage 2 posters in his room (Obvious in the episode where Penny verbally castrates him)

I almost wonder if the average viewer is actually aware that all that CoX paraphernalia is related to a real-world product, or if they think it was something drummed up for the show. For example, my family would've never known if I hadn't jumped up off the couch screaming "ZOMG, I PLAY THAT GAME!!!!"
