Possums are jerks. Along with raccoons.

Skunks are the one species aside from mosquitoes (though mosquitoes serve a wonderful role as food supply for birds) that I would love for someone to invent a virus to completely wipe the species out. I hate skunks with the burning passion of a thousand stars. I hate skunks more than an Imperial Fist hates an Iron Warrior.

Stop hating on the skunks. They deserve to be here as much as you do.
Also, opossums are cute.

I thought this topic was going to be about some sort of Pogo revival. (Which makes it even more appropriate that the topic eventually turned to the subject of skunks)

For an unholy union of a rat, a weasel, and a ghast, they are about as cute as I would expect them to be.

Throw in that monster in the Legend of Zelda games that stops moving when you look at it and it'll be just about right.

These creatures are not cute. They are prime vectors for rabies. And if you've never had to deal with your dog getting sprayed by a skunk or had to live with the stench of one coming within a mile of your place, you're lucky. That stink takes a LONG time to go away. And if one gets into an out-building? Hope there's nothing in there that you liked...

LMAO! A Ghast, really? I thought those were D&D only.

It's a defensive mechanism. If the dog minded his business he wouldn't get sprayed. If he's smart he won't get sprayed twice.

And as any search on the web will tell you to get rid of it you need something that disolves the oil and then something to clean it out (vinegar or peroxide, mixed with baking soda and your favorite liquid soap will do).

Have you ever actually encountered a real skunk? I'm guessing not.

They may be D&D only. But the possum gives off a ghast-like reek when it plays dead. Also: the nature of its Feign Death ability makes it naturally seem like an undead hybrid.

There was a family of skunks that used to live nearby...they always turned around and headed in the opposite direction when I guess they sensed me. So based off those few encounters, I assume most skunks arent usually trouble makers. During my travels, Ive even heard of people keeping them as pets.

As far as being vectors for rabies, I may be wrong, but I think dogs are the top contenders for that deal.

I thought they used to be, but sometime in the 90s became surpassed by bats, 'coons, and skunks.

It's because of the vaccination program for dogs. It's quite effective in reducing the risk of exposure to humans, as dogs are the carriers most likely to come into contact with humans.

Wild animals, on the other hand, tend to not be vaccinated for the disease, leading to its easy spread. Though iirc there are programs to distribute vaccinated material such that wild animal populations can get access to it, it's kinda hit or miss.

Location, location, location...Im thinking more on a global vs USA level I guess.

Im currently "hanging out" in Afghanistan and even though I havent seen any coons and skunks (buttload of bats circling lights at night), there are plenty of wild dogs around. The military at this FOB has even dedicated posters and some airwave time to "do not pet the dogs when you are outside the wire" because there are some pretty cute puppies in some of the villages.

Its a shame, but with the poor conditions many of the people are subjected to in this country, dogs are probably infected with everything from rabies to Resident Evil's T-Virus.

That's because skunks and raccoons are not native to that region. I wouldn't expect to see a kangaroo hoping around in the middle of the US either.

You'd have better luck finding raccoons (and to some degree skunks because they are legal as pets in the UK) them in European areas.

And yes, economic status of a country does dictate the prevalence of rabies in animals that would otherwise be domesticated. I would avoid pretty much any animal in that part of the world, simply due to the likelyhood of infection with some heretofore unknown pathogen.
