Memory leak problems, game crashing

Im sure you've heard this one before. After about 3-4 hours into the game, it will freeze for a few seconds, than when I click it automatically shuts down. I know the problem, and When i played last month I remember there being an easy fix, but I can't remember or find it.

Was it something simple like setting the game in windowed mode or something? Or was it a specific driver for my video card that made it play nice with Coh? I remember gettin the game to run smoothly, just dont remember how xD.

Im sorry I can't Dxdiag...currently at work and typing up what I remember.

For basic info, im currently using

Proccesor: Quad proccesor, dun remember the exact numbers but they about 2.5 GHZ or more

Graphics card: Nvidia gtx 9800 with the most up to date driver, 301.42. I havent tried running the game since I dled this new driver, as mine was badly out of date, will see if this alone fixes it

Ram: 3 gigs

Windows Vista 32-bit

I know my comp isnt a juggernaut by todays standards, but I can run Tera etc at full graphics with little to no issue...I jus need help remembering that fix for CoH xD.

Thanks in advance.

I'll leave more detailed speculations to those more qualified, but I do know one cause of memory leaks- the game launcher. Do you have it set to close itself out automatically when the game fires up? If not, you should change its options to do so.

Yes I have that setup, but thanks for the tip ^^.

No one?....because i Dunno i can run Tera etc on the highest setting, but these crashes make the game unplayable?

Maybe Ncsoft should hold off on the issues/power sets and take a month or so to really break down this games code and fix the problem, would allow a lot more people to actually.....ya know, play the game >>.

Speaking for myself, I've never had the game run out of memory. It pretty much sticks to 1.5GB for hours of play. Sorry I can't be of any help.

Also, it's daylight in the US, don't expect a lot of people to see and comment until later in the day.

Lastly follow Hyper's guide here to provide us with more info about your setup and game settings. It's cuts down the need to play 20 questions.

I don't have a solution but I am boggled.

The problem happens 3-4 hours into the game and makes it unplayable?

I can't remember the last time I played for more than a couple hours. The last TF I did I suppose.

I've been having the same issue as well, but only for the past couple months. I now crash a couple times/night. The system will just freeze, then crash. I'll try to get a screenshot of the error window next time, but it looks memory related.
I have WinXP, 32 bit, 4G memory. Prior to a couple months ago, CoH would NEVER crash. I've been using this system since 2009 and have had no issues.
Has something significant occurred in the code over the past couple months?

I'd be happy to post any diags or log entries, but not sure where to get that info.
Any help would be great.

Thanks!

I've accidentally left the game running overnight when I've stepped away from the computer while I was in a mission and forgot I hadn't logged out without any issue. Now, I realize sitting alone in a mission without any real graphics change would definitely not be the same as actively playing but if there were a memory leak, I would think I would have come back to a crashed game after 16 hours+ of running.

I have, however, seen problems that caused CoH to crash after a few hours of play while I had Chrome open in the background. If you don't run any other programs while playing CoH, then this won't apply, of course, but if you do, it could be something other than the game causing issues.

Hmm i do have chrome open when this happens...I can try shutting it off and see what happens.

I set it into windowed mode and upgraded my driver card and have let the game sit in a mish for a few hours while I worked around the house..so far so good

I don't have Chrome running, but might have Firefox running. I'll try not having anything running, and maybe even disabling a bunch of other Windows stuff which shows up in the task manager, and see what it does.

Chrome may be doing it, Just by surfing youtube and stuff on Chrome and having my RAM/memory usage chart on.

Chrome usually sucks up near half a gig o_O

The game crashes on me regularly after a bit of time, each and every time I play it, and it's acted like that for at least several months now.

I kind of measure it in the number of iTrials I can play. That's usually two before the game crashes. Or a single Underground trial (if I'm lucky; sometimes it will crash at some point near the end).

The game always crashes in one of four ways:

1: An "out of memory" error - I'm not really out of memory though. This pop-up error window also says something about the file size of some zipped file. It's in relation to the game's graphical assets. Most curious about this is the game will continue playing in the background while the pop-up error window forces itself to maintain focus. Though there's a lot of missing graphics, which is funny to see! Eventually the game freezes up if I don't dismiss the pop-up to tell it to close the game, and then I have to use the close gadget (which sends me to the standard Windows crash detector thingie).

2: The old Cryptic crash detector pop-up. A legacy from back when Cryptic still owned the game. The pop-up even has their old logo still on it. This is the one where you can type in something in the window to talk about what you were doing just before the game crashed.

3: Windows standard crash detector: You know, that one that says something about "an error has occurred" and something else about the program needing to close? The one where you can send an error report to Mircosoft. I've kind of assumed that MS sends that crash data to Paragon, so I always tell it to make and send the report whenever this window pops up.

4: Crash to desktop: This is the most rare, of the crashings. The game crashes like this maybe once or twice a month (I play this game daily). Note that I actually play in Windowed mode with the window maxed out to fill the screen (I enjoy keeping access to the task bar). So when this happens, the window just disappears and the program terminates. No crash detector pop-ups, no error report requests, do not pass go, do not collect $200! Just, pfft!

Until you follow this, then we won't know if it's from browser ram hogging or something as simple as corrupted graphics drivers.

I have been crashing also but only when playing my Beast Mastery MM or playing on a team that has one.

I think it has something to do with the sounds the Beasts howl along with another power sound effect. I usually can play hours on end with no issues as long as there are no Beasts around.

I have tried the sound setting on Compatible and Performance with no difference, it will still crash eventually.

/unloadgfx does not help like it used to.

Don't know if this would help, but you could try silencing the Beast Mastery sounds. Zombie Man posted a list of BM sounds here.

Welcome. I have had the problem sence, hmm let me think Issue 2. Been over and over and over and......with Tech support for years. Tech support says there is no Mem leak. Ended up dealing with one of the devs and yes there is one, the problem is they cant find it. It doesn't effect enough people for it to be found. And it effects one person and then someone with an identical machines, drivers, everything it doesn't. About a year and a half ago I did finally get rid of it. But it took an all new computer with top of the line video and that to get rid of it. Wish I had better news, sorry and GL.

O also I did find and still do if there are a lot of fire effects going on it makes it way worse.

Agree with this, follow hyperstikes guide. http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=231628

I have CoH running on 5 different PCs + 1 laptop with very different hardware and different drivers and they all run stable. So before jumping up and down blaming the CoH program, please follow hyperstrike's guide.

Pssst, there's a big memory leak sitting on your HDD, it's called Windows. ;-)
