The "Holy cow, 8 years!?!" Thread

Eight years. Not only is that a long time to play a game, it's a long time to do just about anything. Quite the accomplishment, CoH dev/support team! In that time, I have:

  • Been promoted at work three times, and changed jobs once.
  • Become an uncle three times.
  • Bought one car and sold another.
  • Moved twice, once to an apartment and the second time buying a condo.
  • Played three other MMOs for at least a month (WoW, Star Trek Online, DCUO)...but always came back to CoH.
  • Bought three different gaming rigs (and CoH looked better on each one).
  • Attended at least four CoH meet and greets at GenCon (maybe more, I kinda lost count).
  • Traveled to 6 different countries outside my home in the US (Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Japan).
What's happened to you in the last eight years (or since you started CoH)?

I came in between Launch and Issue 1. My 1st character, an Emp/Rad defender (always guaranteed a team), partook of the Rularuu invasion around level... 35-ish.

Since launch I've only switched jobs once, but been moved within the 2nd job twice. I'm on my 3rd gaming rig, and rebuilding again this fall/winter. I've played 7 other MMOs but always kept City paid up.

Yeah...time has flown.

Let's see:

  • got off of dial up
  • got my own computer
  • got my own account!
  • went through college
  • got a new job!
  • finished college loans
  • struck out on my own

Heh, I've played this game more than a quarter of my life, edging towards a third of it.

Same job, but a number of title changes/promotions.
Same house.
Same wife.
My daughter was in pre-school when the game launched, and now she's about to graduate elementary.
Not sure how many gaming rigs I've gone through, but let's say four or five.

Maybe the game should be renamed to City of Rasputin.
Truth.

Two other Super Hero MMOs were almost supposed to spell doom, along with one from Marvel that has yet to materialize.

In the time I've played CoH, I...

  • Work for the same company, but changed teams once and managers four times.
  • Bought a new car.
  • Moved twice, once to an apartment and once to a suburban home.
  • Upgraded my gaming rig twice. (I build my own, and making them pretty cutting edge future-proofs them pretty well.)
  • Have seen my internet download speed about go up about a factor of six.
  • Have seen kids who were babies when the game came out with their own accounts and self-designed characters, including playing with Mids.

Wow, it's been a while..

Well, I've :

Seen my local ISPs go from dial-up to DSL and cable
Blown through about 4 PCs and numerous graphic cards
Flew through 3 jobs and 1 car accident
Made some great in-game friends
Stopped forum lurking a few years ago -_-
Realised how invested I am, in an online game
Really been enjoying the game , regardless of it's ups and downs!

Here's to 12,387 more years!

Eight-plus years here, yeah. I can remember reading about this game in the college computer labs.

I have worked five(?) different jobs, culminating in the two I am at now: government work and graduate professor. In the interim, I was laid off when a company I had devoted too much of my life to sold me out--luckily, things got better.

Before, I had never left the United States. Now, I have been to several foreign countries--including "living" in Tokyo for nearly two weeks. I have swam in the Caribbean, hiked rain forests, and ascended Mt. Fuji.

I lived with my parents, then a series of apartments, and then a large home in an amazing neighborhood, overlooking Lake Erie. Which is good, because I now have (almost) four nieces and nephews. And two amazing children of my own, with the most amazing person I could ever imagine. And a definitely not very amazing dog.

I wish that the people who brought me here were still here. More than that, I wish that the people who made me love this game were still here. (Many still are. )

And I'm still here, too.

EDIT: Dammit. And I've been using the same computer all along. Thanks for rubbing it in.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Went through a major surgery that saved my life. I spent a month--3 weeks of which I was in a coma--in the hospital recovering. And the whole time I was missing CoH! I lost track of how many characters I created and played in my mind.

Both of my daughters (now 7 and 2) were born after I started playing this game. My eldest actually has her own account to play with me now.

I remember back in the original forums before the game was ever launched or even Alpha'd. I've been playing since the Open Beta and been around for all the major changes of the game.

So what has happened to me:

5 Jobs
Gotten my son from Elementary School to College
Moved to another city
Cut off my waist-length hair
Took a year off of CoH for financial reasons and have enjoyed coming back as a Premium Player
Traveled out of country on business a half dozen times
Written a Novel (unpublished still)
Published a Song
Enjoyed Life

Amazing to think that this game (in some form) and some of the community have been around for over a decade now.

I got married
Had a son
Donated 12 inches of hair to locks for love, twice!
Moved across country, twice
Bought a car

"the reason there are so many sarcastic pvpers is we already had a better version of pvp taken away from us to appease bad players. Back then we chuckled at how bad players came here and whined. If we knew that was the actual voice devs would listen to instead of informed, educated players we probably would have been bigger dicks back then." -ConFlict

After 8 years, I discovered today that the forums are blocked at work. (I was off yesterday.)

After eight plus years...

* Moved three times (twice across state lines)
* Changed jobs six times
* Started college (again) and earned my BA in Game Design
* Upgraded/replaced my PC four times (working on the fifth)
* Stayed with the same ISP, though it was bought out several times (Excite@Home, AT&T@Home, Comcast)
* Left my longtime girlfriend just before Issue 2 (for unrelated reasons), and been single since
* Became a PAX Enforcer, watched the show grow from 3k attendees total to sellout in less than 24 hours
* Lost two grandparents
* Bought a car (used)
* Made a ton of really great friends
* Played several different MMOs (WAR, TOR, WoW, GW, APB, Global Agenda, EVE), but always returned to CoX
* Run a semi-successful RP coalition which has spawned published work and earned people other than myself money
* Created hundreds of characters that never made it past level 4
* Run only two characters to level 50
* Never had my account lapse for more than 24 hours

It's been a hell of a ride. Looking forward to the tenth anniversary.
