Heads up: NCsoft's pushing Pando Media Booster
Guess how much liability Pando or NCSoft have if they release a buggy update of City of Heroes / NCSoft Launcher that uploads all your banking information to the wild?
Guess how much liability Mozilla Foundation/Corporation has if they release a buggy update of Mozilla Firefox that uploads all your banking information to the wild? Guess how much liability Adobe has if they release a buggy update of Flash Player that uploads all your banking information to the wild? Guess how much liability Oracle has if they release a buggy update the Java Virtual Machine that uploads all your banking information to the wild? Got a point beyond FUD? |
This is absolutely true that at the current time, Pando doesn't do anything bad.
However, guess how much liability Pando or NCSoft have if they release a buggy update of PMB that uploads all your banking information to the wild? |
Pando appears to have less potential for accidental upload as torrent clients do. Torrent clients are designed to be able to initiate seeding, but Pando is explicitly designed not to do that, because the file node generation process is handled centrally. Most torrent clients have to be able to respond to my request to seed a file and allow it to be uploaded, but Pando doesn't seem to have that capability, so it can't be accidentally triggered either.
That's not to say that Pando is perfectly safe, but then again the City of Heroes game client is not 100% safe either.

Makes me glad I never considered playing another game.
Since this pando (I thought it was a thread about Pandas at first) thing is only active while downloading a new patch or a fresh install - and I'm guessing faster - other than my initial distrust and loathing of anything new, I don't see it as that big of a deal.
But - I am not at all typical, nor am I savvy about all the evils of the internet.
That bit about Adobe that Arcanaville mentioned - I'd not heard that. Good thing I don't keep banking records on my computer.
Personally, I think they (CoH) should leave well enough alone. The Launcher seems to work just fine. It's not broken, why fix it?

None of those applications are designed to share the contents of your filesystem.

(technically, the last one was because of Apple's JVM... but the same vulnerability existed in Oracle's before it... and there's countless other remote code injection attacks against all three)

Thanks for this thread. It's been quite a while since I tried Aion, and its F2P isn't bad. Looks like they've seriously fixed leveling speed, too.
Had absolutely no issue with Pando attempting to run any time other than when I was actively downloading the game. Absolutely no traffic at any other time, with default settings.

I think being billed for the game should include a direct download from the company. I also think that the company shouldn't use my bandwidth cap to pay for services that they should be providing itself as a part of my subscription money. In effect by using a mandatory P2P service, they would be double billing me.

I can't answer for Heal_n_Touch, but from a personal standpoint:

If the company tells you up front that they're using a third-party service for downloading/patching, they've done what's required. Whether you pay for the game from then on is up to you.
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

Got a point beyond FUD?
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
