Players on the same server with the same name

I'm on Virtue. As you can imagine, there's a lot of names taken... so you have multiple players with the same name but with an . or - or interchanging l and I

As of late, I've seen twins running around with the same names. Its not the l/I trick or alt codes...

How are they doing this? Is it an exploit?

Not an exploit, the names are diffrent in some way.

Indeed. What you're seeing is hardly new... there was someone... I don't *believe* they were on virtue, but I could be wrong - who multiboxed. Severely. With Illusion controllers. I don't remember what the name was - it was "illusion" something - and they all had the "same" name, but doing just what Neko's saying - switching the Is and Ls and the like. So you'd have Illusion, IlIusion, IIlusion, IIIusion, I1Iusion, I11usion, Il1sion, etc. (I don't recall if they had 1s in there or not - I believe there were some I/L or O/0 substitutions in the second name, too.)

Other set teams/supergroups have done the same thing.

It's just a matter of finding the name(s) you want that work with it.

If you're *really* curious as to what's being substituted, either a /whoall while they're in the zone (with chat logged,) or right clicking and rating the players will tell you what they're doing. Either way, take the log or playernotes.txt file and just capitalize everything. You should then be able to see the 0/1, I/L/|/etc. much more clearly. (You may actually be able to pick up on it without the capitalization, depending on font.)

That wasn't "someone", it was a large number of "someones", Parallel Illusion was a very popular supergroup on Triumph for a while. Some of us have ours still.

It was all about the I/l switch, no 1s involved.

There was an entire SG of people who all used the name Parallel Illusion. With all those I's and L's, that's a lot of possible names.

I do remember hearing of "a" someone who did the same thing, though, as a massive multibox (COH players with multiple accounts? Never! >.>) - and yeah, with illusion. I'm probably blending the two in memory, though.

This. The way the name database is coded, it's literally not possible for 2 characters to have the exact same name with no tricky differences such as the L/i switch.

Sounds like a lot of fun... finally a way to play Simons

I've heard that too from a couple threads/people.

Hard thing to prove and organise a screen shot for.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

I may actually *have* said screen shot. I'd have to look. (A friend and I were both trying to reserve another friend's name, since she was having some issue trying to log on... surprisingly *cough.*)

Note that we'd coordinated after to try and see if it could happen again - couldn't get it to.

Awesome, thanks.

I wondered if the difference in caps mattered - I know it shouldn't but...

It does. SIREN is not the same as Siren, as far as the game is concerned.

Bramphousian, BRAMPHOUSIAN and bramphousian are the same as far as the game is concerned.

Thank you, Champion.

I also just tried this with capitalization variants of some of my more unusual names, and none of them passed.

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.

Ahhh, Parallel Illusion.

Good times.

Incorrect.

You can /t Memphis Bill, MEMPHIS BILL, memphis bill, MeMpHiS BiLl, MEMphIs BiLL, etc. and they'll all go to my character. And if you try using any of those names (even though mine's only capitalized as a proper name - first letter of each word,) you'll get "Name is in use." (Yes, I have different versions of me everywhere.)

Therefore, the game does not consider case.

*heh* i was going to post that the game's naming system is not case sensitive, but you beat me to it. Oh well.

Well, unfortunately, "Siren", the name, is blocked. It's been on the Blocked List for quite some time, if not forever. And it doesn't matter how you capitalize it.

Which is odd... because the Marvel character by that name spells it "Siryn."

But the super alter ego of Image Comics' character Infringement Chaser is Siren. He would chase people who imitated the name or look of established Image supers while going "WaaaaAhAAAAAAhhhaaaaAAAAAHHH!" before serving them with papers suing them on the super's behalf. (The previous sentence was an utter fabrication; i have no idea why the name "Siren" is blocked.)

DC and Malibu comics, apparently. It's not all about Marvel.

Ah. Still, it's a bit of a stretch in my opinion, but i fully realize it's not my opinion that matters.
